February Local Love
February 2022 PUBLISHER
Laura Sabia | laura.sabia@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
Kristin Burnell | kristin.burnell@citylifestyle.com
Art comes in many different forms, and it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart—a part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to various expressions of art in different ways, and we tend to appreciate artistic expression that makes us feel something and that resonates with us. I have always admired the vast creativity that artisans of all kinds pour into their craftsmanship. Our February issue is dedicated to sharing about local products, makers and artists in our community. As you read about a few local artisans in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We just have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love and that fill us up. So, while you fill your home with chocolates, flowers and valentines (and perhaps college basketball) this month, remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us. And while you are at it, don’t forget to shop local and support our local makers and artists right here in our community.

Local Love: A Boozy Twist on a Dessert Classic ONE LOCAL WOMAN USED THE PANDEMIC LOCKDOWN TO LAUNCH HER SPECIAL ICE CREAM COMPANY
Alchimista Spiked Ice Cream is a one of a kind business taking a whole new twist on dessert. We spoke with owner, Gabriela Baumatz 1. What was your inspiration behind spiked ice cream? My grandmother use to make ice cream for me when I was little and I loved it. I tried to replicate it over the years to bring a small piece of my grandma back into my home. When COVID hit, I had just opened my business in interior design (I’m an architect) and the work came to a stop because of lockdowns. Nobody wanted anyone in their homes. So I decided to go back to my passion. I tried again to make my grandmother’s ice cream recipe while also improving it. After lots of tests, I found a recipe that was good to me and amazing to everyone else. That was the moment when my dark chocolate ice cream was born. From there, I started experimenting with more flavors and then I started adding alcohol to them. Along the way, I perfected the taste and texture of each one
until I found the perfect pairing between alcohol and ice cream. We now have 14 flavors. 2. What are your plans for the future? My plan is to bring Alchimista Spiked Ice Cream into everyone’s home, into every social and corporate event. 3. What makes your business different/ special/ unique? My ice cream is artisanal. We use only fresh ingredients and premium alcohol. All of our flavors have up to 5 % of alcohol per volume. You can definitely feel the alcohol in every flavor 4. Where can readers find/purchase Alchimista? Choose your flavors online on our website: www.myalchimista.com and get them at our production facility in Mamaroneck (360 C Mount Pleasant Ave, NY). Contact us through our website or directly by email: contact @myalchimista.com so we know when you are coming!

CREATIVE TABLESCAPES AND MORE OFFERED AT BACKCOUNTRY MERCANTILE THE BUSINESS PROVIDES CUSTOMERS A PERSONALIZED EXPERIENCE WITH VARIOUS SERVICES OFFERED
24
O UR TOWN | HOM E + D ESI GN
We spoke with Amanda Gaudelet, owner of Backcountry Mercantile in Greenwich, who told us about the unique services she offers at her business. Backcountry Mercantile melds vintage treasures with new, carefully curated, and sought-after ones. They believe that setting a table that not only looks elegant but one that also tells a story, is what becomes the foundation of a memorable celebration. Amanda Gaudelet has been drawn to heirloom elements, such as glassware, cutlery, teacups, and linens, for as long as she can remember. Her passion for blending these vintage elements with those that are new is where her appreciation for setting a table was born. We asked Gaudelet what types of services she provides and what makes her a stand out business in town.
Can you tell us a little bit about your business and what you do? Our business model focuses on providing our customers with the ability to create their very own, personalized tablescape. The product we offer includes one-of-a-kind, hand-painted ceramic ware, an array of vintage sourced glassware, and curated items from other small, family-run manufacturers. Partnerships include Mosser Glass in Cambridge, Ohio, FIMA in Deruta, Italy, and Pergay Porcelains in Limoges, France. Everything we provide to our consumers is handmade, whether it be hand-pressed glassware or hand-painted ceramic ware. Nothing is mass-produced, which makes our products all the more unique, and limited in design.
Lisa Ehrlich Designs
Can you walk us through your daily tasks as a small business owner? My day consists of performing tasks from content creation, photoshoots of table settings & new collections, marketing on social media (where we obtain a large number of our sales), maintaining web inventory (we also offer a limited supply of our product on Etsy), keeping up with packing product and supply (boxes, ribbon, stickers, the printing of marketing material, bubble wrap, more bubble wrap – haha). Then there is answering web inquiries and sales calls. A good amount of my day is spent fulfilling orders to ship all over the country, we currently only ship domestic. There is the coordination with vendors, the coordinating of receiving the goods, and then when there is any spare time (which there hasn’t been a lot lately) I might work on the blog. What do you want readers to know about your business? We aim to bring joy to celebrations, gatherings, and the everyday tabletop presentation at home. A beautiful tablescape brings a sense of immediate warmth and welcoming while setting the stage for an enjoyable and memorable moment amongst friends and family.

AMANDA GAUDELET
Maria Avila Design
What types of services do you offer? The short answer is that we offer the coordination and design of custom tableware from Italy and France, as well as retail of our curated glass items. CERAMICWARE Our ceramics are handmade in Deruta, Italy, the same as was done during the Italian Renaissance, the maiolica way. They are created using hand-pressed molds, and then each piece is intricately painted by hand. The festive collections we design are produced in limited quantities. Custom orders may be made, upon request, with a lead time of 6-10 weeks. Popular requests are monogramming and logo imprinting. For a full guide to the making of handmade Italian ceramics, please read our story here: https://www.backcountrymercantile.com/fima-deruta PORCELAIN In the new year, we will be expanding upon our offerings, including custom porcelain. The porcelain is produced in Limoges, France, made from hand-pressed molds, while the decoration and design of the pieces are also created by strokes of using various hand tools. Custom pieces such as imprinted logos and colored rims are also painted by hand. The lead time is 8-12 weeks. GLASSWARE Our online shop offers a vast array of vintage glassware, as well as new, 'reproduced’ glassware, made from vintage molds. We have customers who ask us to source specific pieces that they may have seen at a wedding they attended, or in a magazine spread. Some requests are more nostalgic in that we are seeking something a relative once owned, but it can no longer be obtained.

It’s Time to Get Salty!
One thing is for sure. We love wellness at Greenwich Lifestyle and will usually be the first to try any new wellness fad. Butter in coffee? Yup. Amethyst Crystal Water Bottles? You mean water that sparkles while you drink and provides health benefits? Done. Salt caves? We are intrigued. For generations, salt has been a way to revitalize, heal stress and respiratory discomfort and can even improve your skin health. We sat down with owner and Greenwich native, Adrienne O’Donnell Schuck from the Salt Cave of Darien to learn about what her hidden treasure cave of salt has to offer. GL: Can you describe your business to our readers that have never visited? AS: At our enchanting Salt Cave of Darien, you’ll enjoy an oasis of peace, calm and serenity. Whether you want to release stress, address a health challenge, or gather with friends and family, you’ll find our Cave inviting, warm and soothing.

"The benefits of dry salt therapy is clinically proven and it is not a fad. It has been used in Europe for centuries. It is such a positive atmosphere and people have found relief from many different issues." — Adrienne O’Donnell Schuck
GL: What types of services do you provide? AS: The Cave is a wellness destination with a rich line up of therapies to help you destress, detox and improve your overall health. We have many different things that we offer from the popular 45 minute salt session to full cave rentals where your group relaxes together. We offer couples massages and special events. During special events, some top local healers visit the cave bringing additional services to clients, including guided meditations, yoga nidra and yin yoga, sound-bowl meditation, reflexology and acupuncture. The Salt Cave has added a private salt-lined room perfect for our popular salt room Date Night which comes with Prosecco and small bites or individual treatments. Now you can enjoy a private session, massage, reflexology, energy work or tarot card readings all while breathing in the healing salt air, so you receive double the benefits during every treatment. GL: What are the benefits of those services? AS: We provide halotherapy (salt therapy) during all of our services. Halotherapy benefits in many ways: Its anti-inflammatory properties has been known to help with allergies, respiratory issues, stress release, joint pain and skin problems while leaving you with a feeling of deep relaxation. The benefits of dry salt therapy is clinically proven and it is not a fad. It has been used in Europe for

centuries. It is such a positive atmosphere and people have found relief from many different issues. GL: What makes your business unique from any other business? AS: Besides adding Halotherapy to our services like massage and the like, our Cave is very luxurious with its own waterfall. Our salt room is a cocoon of salt. The beautiful pinks, reds and yellow also provide chromotherapy which is when colors are healing to the body. Our staff is ready to make sure you enjoy your time with us. You will be sure to leave rejuvenated. GL: This magazine issue is all about local love, what is something you can comment on about the importance of local businesses? AS: I grew up in Greenwich and now am a Darien resident, so this area means so much to me. I want to make sure to support my neighbors and friends which only helps our towns. Plus there are so many stores offering unique items – perfect for that special purchase or gift! Prepare to get salty by wearing whatever makes you the most comfortable. You won’t be covered in salt when you leave. We recommend a light sweater or blanket as the room can get chilly. The Salt Cave is located at 555 Post Rd, Darien, CT 06820. You can book reservations by emailing info@saltcaveofdarien.com. Remember to tell them Greenwich Lifestyle says hi!

Just over the Connecticut border and 4 time winner of “Best Events Space,” sits The Capitol Theatre, a historical landmark located in Portchester, New York. Notable for being a premier performance venue, the Theatre offers venue rentals at its location as well. If you are looking for something to do before one of the concerts, you can purchase a block of tickets online for the Theatre’s pre-show option, which takes place before the band takes the stage. This is a perfect activity for those looking for something to do before the concert while staying at the same location making for less travel around town. The Daily: Greenwich Avenue’s New Hot Spot
ARTICLE BY KRISTIN BURNE LL

T R E N D SE T T E R | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
The Daily is a modern all day cafe that focuses on unique sandwiches, salads, quick meals and amazing coffee. The owner, Debra Ponzek, recently celebrated their 26th anniversary of town favorite deli, Aux Delices. She tells us that, “It was time to do a similar concept but with an entirely new menu and vibe.” Located right on the Avenue, The Daily is a well designed space that was inspired by the travel that the owners have experienced. We asked Ponzek where this inspiration was drawn from and she said, “There are certain flavor profiles that we just love so we try to introduce where we can in the menu. We cook a lot at home and are always experimenting with various combinations that we think will work well in the stores.” The creation of The Daily’s space compliments their food offerings and makes a perfect location for those who want to grab a bite to eat while shopping or catching the train. As a cafe, they are keeping up with the growing and emerging trends within the food industry. Ponzek told Greenwich Lifestyle that they are seeing a shift toward plant based foods as more people are eating less meat. Probiotic foods and beverages continue to be popular amongst customers as well. Guests can also choose from an array of warm breakfast sandwiches and burritos as well as overnight oats, granola parfaits, muffins and scones. For lunch, The Daily services grab and go sandwiches, flatbreads, and salads. Recently, comfort meals such as chicken pot pie, veggie chili, mac and cheese, and grilled moroccan chicken have all be introduced the menu as well. The Daily also bakes cookies fresh everyday to satisfy any sweet tooth. One goal of The Daily was to keep the brand separate from Aux Delices. However, they have carried over some crowd favorite items from the menu including; their ginger tea, energy bites, and turkey chili. One thing that Ponzek said keeps the two brands separate is that The Daily is a more modern vibe that welcomes new customers to try their versatile offerings. Ponzek credits her loyal, hardworking staff for helping overcome the challenges that come with opening a restaurant during the pandemic. While The Daily is staffed with long time employees, the cafe has faced staffing obstacles on the catering side of the business but they try to accommodate as many clients as possible but can be limited by lack of staff. As for any other challenges, The Daily has been affected by supply issues with their packaging supplies. They have found difficulty in printing their coffee cups and bags as well as getting other supplies needed for the business. Despite obstacles, The Daily has seen heavy foot traffic since its opening, gaining attention from many residents. One of Ponzek’s favorite items on the menu are the Mushreuben sandwich and the salmon and mango salad. The cafe is open 7 days a week, opening at 7:00 A.M. and closing at 5 P.M. Monday through Saturday and from 9:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M.

A TOWN TREASURE, MELI-MELO Since 1994, Meli-Melo has been a local favorite providing a variety of items like sandwiches, soups, salads, sweet and savory crepes, and more. Owners, Marc and Evelyne Penvenne, grew up eating French cuisine and when they moved to Greenwich they decided to open the French cafe as a homage to the cuisine. Meli-Melo is a staple to defining the importance of local love within the community. A true local gem, the restaurant has an art program where local artists can show their work in the space on a rotating basis. The cafe has a vast amount of offerings, with a menu that is always expanding as their business has grown immensely over the past 25 plus years. Meli-Melo is open 7 days a week with a breakfast menu and an all day menu provided. They recently launched Grab & Go items just before the pandemic with many of the menu favorites but also salad dressings, jam, local honey, granola, along with comfort
foods such as: dulce de leche, matcha, bread pudding, brownies. Daily soup offerings and an extensive juice bar menu are also a crowd favorite, and the cafe makes up to a dozen flavors of all-natural ice cream and sorbet. During the pandemic, the restaurant also added wine and beer to its offerings for customers. Versailles patisserie supplies the fresh viennoiserie each morning, and has a sister restaurant up the street called Bistro V. Along with its various offerings, Meli-Melo is also available for catering special events and corporate meetings. Millionair.com is one of Meli-Melo's new catering accounts. They are open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m., as well as Saturday's from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Sunday's 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. You can see their various menus at their website https://www. melimelogreenwich.com, or by stopping in at their storefront at 362 Greenwich Avenue!

creative planning for your future ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Creative Planning believes there’s a richer way to wealth. Their team of CFP professionals, CPAs and attorneys work together to create clear customized plans to maximize your wealth, all in one place. Their award-winning in-house services span a variety of financial disciplines, including comprehensive wealth and investment management, insurance, tax prep, trusts, estate, financial and retirement planning. Founded in Overland Park, they have since branched out across the globe, gaining a national reputation that has earned them numerous prestigious awards, including #1 wealth management firm in America by Barron’s, CNBC and Forbes. President and CEO Peter Mallouk shares his wealth of knowledge with approachable financial advice. “I was born and raised in Kansas City,” says Mallouk. “When we started Creative Planning in 2004, I never thought we would get the instantaneous reception that we did. It took off on day one and never stopped. Being based in Kansas City was quite by accident, but staying has been very
intentional. We have so many wonderful, educated people in the region and we are centrally located, allowing us to serve clients coast to coast. This has worked out well for us given some of our largest client bases are in California, New York, Florida, Texas and Illinois. We now have about 1,000 employees with offices in dozens of states serving tens of thousands of clients across the country. We couldn’t be better situated to serve our clients.” Two issues coming together at once inspired the creation of Mallouk’s business. “My dad was a physician frustrated with his financial advisor who sold him products and didn’t really explain things well, and I was an estate attorney that saw a full view of the advisory world and thought there was a better way to deliver the all around experience. Ultimately, that led to Creative Planning offering investments and planning as well as legal and tax advice in a very approachable, consultative way.” CONTINUED >

Mallouk has written several books, including 5 Mistakes Every Investor Makes and How to Avoid Them, and has cowritten Unshakeable: Your Financial Freedom Playbook and The Path: Accelerating Your Journey to Financial Freedom with Tony Robbins. “People are generally fearful of investment and feel the market is too low or too high at any given time. When there is a correction (a drop of 10% or more), people generally stay on the sidelines or sell their stocks, fearing the market may collapse and stay lower—there have been over 100 corrections, usually about one per year, and they have all ended with a full recovery. Some of these corrections turn into bear markets, a drop of 20% or more, and all have ended with a full recovery. On the other end of the spectrum, many are worried about investing when the market is at an all time high. This is actually completely normal and happens about once every nineteen days—in other words, all the time! We aren’t surprised when a Hershey’s bar, box of cereal or ticket to Disney World costs more, but somehow are shocked when the market hits an all time high. It’s normal, and inflation has a lot to do with it.” For those with a 401(k), Mallouk says to do everything you can to contribute. “Some 401(k) plans have an employer match, meaning for every dollar you put into the 401(k), the company will match—it usually applies to the first 3 %. I t’s a g uaranteed 1 00% r ate o f r eturn, and there is just nothing else you can do that is going to be as good as that. If you have the ability to contribute the max do that as well, but for sure take advantage of the match.” When faced with the choice to either invest or pay off debts first, Ma llouk says to st art with focusing on the interest rate. “All debts aren’t created equal—if you have credit card debt where you are paying 10% or more in interest, then paying off the debt before doing anything else other than a 401(k) match is the way to go. If your only debt is a home mortgage at 2-4% or so, then investing over a long period of time is very likely to yield you a far better outcome than making extra debt payments.” Life insurance and its role with investing has been a hot topic of financial p lanning. W hile Mallouk believes it’s a terrible investment, he believes it’s a necessity.

“We are planning led, meaning we get to know our clients very well prior to giving them advice. All our portfolios are customized to help clients accomplish their goals, rather than being constructed based on age or risk tolerance.”
“The best purpose for life insurance is the reason it was originally created: to provide money to loved ones if you die. Buy a simple, inexpensive life insurance policy which lasts for a term, say 10 or 20 years. Find out what your family needs to live a quality life if you are gone, and insure for that amount. This best fits families that don’t have enough in investments set aside to maintain a lifestyle in the event of the loss of a breadwinner, which is most people under age 60. Life insurance can also make sense when it comes to estate planning for the wealthy. Life insurance as an investment though is a terrible idea and not a good way to invest for future retirement goals.” When planning an estate, it’s crucial to have a healthcare and financial power of attorney and a will or trust. “A healthcare power of attorney names someone to make healthcare decisions for you in the event you can’t make them for yourself. A financial power of attorney names someone to make financial decisions for you if you can’t for yourself. Lastly a will or a trust both name who will handle things for you in the event of your death, and who will oversee and inherit your assets. Trusts tend to make more sense for wealthier individuals as it can bypass the probate court system, which keeps things private, allows for a faster transfer of assets after death, and because it skips the court system, settling the estate is much less expensive.” When looking for a financial advisor, find the right one by asking the right questions. “Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. A minority of financial advisors are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your best interests. There are thousands of advisors CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/ G R E E N W I C H

that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time. From there, look for education, credentials and experience with people like you.” Creative Planning’s approach to private wealth management sets them apart from the rest. “Our clients have been our greatest allies and have really helped us grow our practice. I attribute that to the quality of our people, that we don’t own any investment products so clients know we are never trying to sell them an investment. We are always on their side of the table. I also think our clients really appreciate how far we will go to solve their problems, especially because we have the specialists to handle most issues in-house.” Managing approximately $100 billion in assets, this leading independent firm attributes its success to putting pieces together that people were desperately looking for. “First, people want a fiduciary, a strong team and are looking for experience. Second, we are planning led, meaning we get to know

our clients very well prior to giving them advice. Third, all our portfolios are customized to help clients accomplish their goals, rather than being constructed based on age or risk tolerance. We have seen a lot of investment success with our clients, and that goes a long way. Fourth, we were the industry pioneer and still the industry leader in delivering the family office to clients, giving them advice and implementation across all their key financial needs, from investments to planning and from legal to tax. Finally and most importantly, we have been very successful at attracting and retaining the best in the business. This is a people business and having the best people is key to delivering the best advice.” As for the future, it’s never looked brighter at Creative Planning. “It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history. In many ways, it feels like we are just at the starting line.” For more information, visit CreativePlanning.com.
