LIFESTYLE LETTER
January Health and Wellness It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community focused revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our city. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and make a daily decision to act on them. Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, physical fitness and purposeful connections. The importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit is the focus of this issue. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health and love. Here's to a healthy and happy 2022!

STATE-OF-THE-ART DENTAL OFFICE WELCOMES NEW PATIENTS TO TRY EFFICIENT, TECHNOLOGY BASED TREATMENTS
Dr. E.J. Traynor
ARTICLE BY KRISTIN BURNELL PHOTOGRAPHY BY JC MARTIN
“Dr. Traynor’s practice is very aesthetics driven, striving to provide function and aesthetics for patients and the referring doctor.”
Dr. E.J. Traynor attended Washington University in St. Louis for dental school. She went on to complete a one-year hospital residency at Barnes/Jewish Hospital at the Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis. Dr. Traynor also completed her 3 year periodontal surgical residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1999, she moved to Greenwich to open her own private practice. Dr. Traynor started the local Seattle Study Club: The Greenwich Study Club in 2008. She currently serves as the director of the club, which consists of local general dentists and dental specialists interested in furthering their knowledge to provide excellent care to each and every patient that comes into their practice.

She also began a dental hygienist study club with the goal to bring together hygienists and help further their knowledge of periodontal disease and how it can be detected and treated. Dr.Traynor is also a member of several professional organizations: American Academy of Periodontics, Seattle Study Club, American Dental Association, Northeast Society of Periodontists, Connecticut State Dental Association, and the Greenwich Dental Society. We asked Dr. Traynor what is one thing she wants people to know about the advanced services she provides and she said this, “You do not have to lose your teeth due to gum disease or recession. Periodontics is about regenerating the bone that was lost to gum disease and regenerating the gum tissue that was lost to recession.” The state-of-the-art office at Traynor Periodontics & Implants, provides the most advanced treatments. Technology has become a big part of the periodontal workflow to help provide precision in services like implant placement. Technology is embraced at the office with the practice being completely digital. Lasers are used to treat disease as well as a 3D x-ray to evaluate the bone around teeth. Dr. Traynor utilizes Platelet Rich Plasma in procedures to bring stem cells and growth factors into the surgical areas. A real-time computer navigates surgery for implant placement precision. Dr. Traynor’s practice is atheistically driven to provide function for patients. She thoroughly examines and explains treatment plans for new patients that might be anxious if referred by their doctor’s to go to her office. As a Greenwich resident, she welcomes new patients to experience her offerings. As for advice about best dental practices, Dr. Traynor encourages people to get a comprehensive exam especially if you have not seen the dentist since the pandemic. She also recommends investing in an electric toothbrush and using it for 2 minutes twice a day.

The pricing discussion can be a real eye-opener. What you see in your home isn’t always what potential buyers see, or what the market says. MINDFULNESS MUSCLES Incorporate mindfulness this new year with these helpful tips from meditation instructor, Lea Grimaldi ARTICLE BY LEA GRIMALDI
Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment, without judgement. But what exactly does that mean, and how can you incorporate mindfulness into your daily habits? One way to practice mindfulness is through meditation. The program Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was developed by Professor and Scientist Jon Kabat-Zinn to help outpatients living with chronic pain and other conditions. The program’s success led to the creation of a type of psychotherapy developed by a team of therapists to integrate mindfulness with cognitive behavioral therapy, called mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT). Below are five benefits of mindfulness and ways to flex your mindfulness muscles today.
BENEFITS OF MINDFULNESS: 1. Better moods – Through regular mindfulness practice, including meditation, we can improve emotional regulation and reactivity. This helps to decrease social anxiety and depression. As a side benefit, it helps people with chronic pain cope with their discomfort, thus improving mood. 2. Reduces stress levels – Mindfulness breathing techniques alone For example, bringing awareness to our breath help us naturally destress. This is supported by studies showing the effects of MBCT in people with chronic pain, depression, and anxiety disorders. 3. Improves memory – Multiple studies show that the practice of mindfulness meditation can improve working memory. In individuals that participated in an eight-week meditation program, scientists discovered higher cortical thickness levels in the hippocampus, a brain region responsible for learning and memory. 4. Increases focus - Mindfulness increases focus by training your brain to pay attention to what you are experiencing in the moment, which in turn increases your ability to focus. 5. Reduces rumination – Several studies have shown that mindfulness reduces rumination which can lead to anxiety and depression brought on by overthinking. In addition to meditation, you can also practice mindfulness through your daily habits and begin by simply paying more attention as you go about your daily routines. Something as easy as changing the route you drive to work or to the grocery store will help you stay focused instead of going on auto-pilot and checking out mentally as you drive.

The more we pay attention to our surroundings, noticing our five senses—what do we see, taste, touch, smell, and hear— the more we will tune in and strengthen our mindfulness muscle. The idea is that when we are fully present, we cannot think about the past or the future because we are in this moment, fully. Lea Grimaldi is an author, intuitive guide, reiki master, yoga, barre, and meditation instructor with more than 20 years’ experience teaching yoga and barre classes. Her first book, Increase Your Peace from A to Z: Simple Steps to Find Calm Amid Chaos, is a mini-directory for stress relief in which she shares her daily practices to keep anxiety under control. Her mission is to guide people to their highest potential through their self-care practice—encompassing mind, body, and spirit—one breath at a time. BUILDING HEALTHIER HABITS IN 2022 HEAR FROM ONE LOCAL N.A.S.M. CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER ABOUT ESTABLISHING THE BEST THE HABITS ARTICLE BY KRISTIN BURNELL
The new year is a classic kick off to start fresh and build many resolutions that we all hope stick around. How many times do your resolutions fall through each year? It can be challenging to build new habits and switch up routines if you’re looking for a change. That’s why we rounded up the best advice to establishing
START WITH A SMALL HABIT AND MAKE IT SOMETHING YOU ENJOY
habits and making them stay for good. We spoke with Danielle Johnston, National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) certified personal trainer and aspiring kinesiologist, who broke down her top tips to maintaining healthy habits this new year.
IF YOU MISS A DAY, TRY AGAIN
Think 1-3 things maximum and then give yourself at least a month or two to apply the change. If you like to eat and cook, maybe try a new recipe or browse a cookbook in the library or bookstore for inspiration. If you like fashion, maybe try cleaning out a section of your closet (i.e. tops, bottoms, shoes, etc) to make way for 1 new piece. If you like being outdoors, maybe you try adding in just a 5 minute walk down the road.
If you miss a day or make a mistake with whatever resolution you’re working on, take that next opportunity to try again. Danielle uses the goal to eat healthier as an example. Health can be interpreted in many different ways but if you can take the small first step of looking at ingredients, that alone can make a world’s difference in the recipe you use so maybe you don’t even have to alter or substitute it. Or if your goal is to snack less but one day you snack more, don’t wave the flag and sabotage your efforts. Take a minute to breathe through the moment and then move on, enjoying the ebb and flow of health instead of going all in or nothing. Starting small allows you to adjust everyday habits that will, with time, transition to lifestyle changes.
CREATE 3 DIFFERENT T YPES OF RESOLUTIONS
TRACK YOUR PROGRESS AND VISUALIZE YOUR FUTURE
Danielle says to create 1 health resolution, 1 personal resolution, and 1 professional resolution as it is the best format to better yourself in multiple realms instead of just physical health. Too often, we get caught up in this “New Year New Me” mindset and create a list of things you want to change or start doing. But as they get lost in the busy to-do list of life and we forget, we can also feel like a failure and revert to “I’ll try again tomorrow or next year”. But what if you don’t have to start over, just keep going.
Whether you keep a notebook of your habit building, or keep track on your phone, it is important to acknowledge the personal progress made. This will also help you see the future that you want to build as you make more desirable changes in your life. If you want to track how you feel after working out, it will serve as a reflection on the progress made through what has been written down. This will encourage you to continue pushing for your goals!

TRANSFORM YOUR ENERGY AND OPTIMIZE YOUR SLEEP Tips for a Rejuvenated You!
Good sleep is a lifestyle, not just a bedtime routine. We all know that after a poor night’s sleep our energy is sluggish, we eat poorly, lack motivation for exercise and feel brain fog. Interestingly, optimizing your sleep for maximum energy starts with habits you incorporate throughout the day! Most of us need seven to eight hours of sleep for optimal daytime functioning, but at least 50% of Americans struggle with sleep quantity and quality. Sleep influences your brain function, mental clarity, mood, hormonal balance, weight management, detoxification and stress response. Prioritizing quality sleep will lead to more than energized days, but also improve your overall wellness. Low energy can be caused by many factors beyond sleep. If you get quality sleep but still feel exhausted, take a look at chronic stress, exercise, nutrition, draining relationships, hormonal imbalances or a demanding schedule. To upgrade your energy levels, invest in the health of your mitochondria–the powerhouses in our cells that turn food and oxygen into energy. Start with a few ideas below for 21 days and see how rejuvenated you feel!
“Prioritizing quality sleep will lead to more than energized days, but also improve your overall wellness.”

Energy Boosters:
1. Hydrate: Drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily. 2. Control your blood sugar: Eat a balance of protein, fiber and healthy fats throughout the day. Try green protein smoothies with “Truvani” protein powder, eggs with spinach and wild salmon paired with veggies. 3. Ditch inflammatory foods: Prevent mitochondrial damage by skipping sugar, processed foods, artificial colors, chemical food additives, and, if intolerant or sensitive, gluten and dairy. 4. Fill half your plate with veggies per meal: Cruciferous veggies are loaded with glutathione, our master antioxidant, and contain vitamins, minerals and fiber. They are immunity boosting and disease fighting powerhouses. 5. Eat your B vitamins: Grass-fed meats, pasture-raised eggs, wild-caught salmon, leafy greens and spirulina, a plant based superfood with B12, are useful for energy. 6. Amplify your healthy fats: Wild-caught salmon, nuts, avocado, etc. boosts your mood, provides sustained energy and improves mental functioning. Try “Vital Choice” delivery of wild Alaskan salmon to your doorstep and sprouted nuts and seeds from “GoRaw”. 7. Power-up on adaptogens: Herbal ingredients used to cope with stress, anxiety, fatigue and boost energy. Immunity: “Host Defence Daily Mushroom Immune Support”Stress: “Four Sigmatic” Reishi or “Moon Juice” AshwagandhaMental Clarity: “Four Sigmatic” Lion’s ManeEnergy: “MoonJuice” Maca or Cordyceps Mushrooms 8. Self-care energy enhancers: add microbreaks for self-care. Think of self care as any activity or way of thinking that brings you back to your higher self—deep belly breathing, meditation or yoga from “Glo”, “Headspace” or local CT yogi, Abbey Chase, mantra’s, walks in nature, decreasing your scroll-time on social media, add in more laughter and time with friends and family. 9. Get moving: Increase your heart rate to release endorphins and elevate your energy and mood while balancing your stress response. It’s also wonderful for your brain, heart, metabolic health and more. Sleep Optimizers: 1. Pause caffeine after noon. 2. Sweat it out: People who engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise may see a difference in sleep quality that same night. Avoid exercising three hours before bed. 3. Pause eating before bed: Eat no later than a few hours before bed to allow your digestion to relax. Eating sugar and processed foods right before bed can influence your sleep quality. 4. Decrease alcohol: It interferes with your sleep quality. 5. Go to bed and wake up at the same time daily: swings in your sleep schedule or trying to catch up on sleep after a week of late nights can cause changes in metabolism. Commit to falling asleep earlier. 6. Unplug: Turn off your devices and screens 1 hour prior to bed to clear your mind and allow for melatonin production. Blue lights emitted from screens block melatonin, your body’s sleep hormone and critical antioxidant. 7. Make your bedroom a sanctuary: Reduce the clutter, dim the lights, consider an eye mask and calming music or white noise. Keep your bedroom temperature cool at 67 degrees. Try essential oils such as “DoTerra” lavender on your wrists or feet. These also work for kids. 8. Create bedtime relaxation rituals: Move from fight-or-flight into a parasympathetic relaxed state with epsom baths, teas, deep belly breathing using the “Breathing” or “Glo” app, yoga nidra on “Glo”, journing, reading etc. 9. Teas, Adaptogens, CBD and Supplements: Teas: Lavender, chamomile, lemon balm or specific sleep blends from “Gaia Herbs” or the de-stress blend at Arogya in Westport. Adaptogens: “Chill the F Out” by Apothekary with reishi mushroom, ashwagandha, raw cacao. Sleep CBD: Arogya in Westport Sleep Tonic by “Herb Pharm”: with valerian, passionflower and other rapidly absorbed liquid herb extracts. Magnesium: relaxes the nervous system and muscles

The Cold Plunge
Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 42
S ELF CA R E | FITNESS
Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. Mike and Ryan both previously owned their own flotation therapy centers. Early pioneers in that space, they discovered they shared many of the same values, business practices and interests. Therefore, the formulation of a business together became inevitable. With finding himself feeling sick on a consistent basis, Ryan found solace in cold plunging. With an engineering background and having built his own chest freezer, Mike found cold plunging tubs on the market unattainable. Together, they set out to create a more realistic solution for half the price. “Everything else on the market was $10k, and it’s not really achievable for a lot of people,” they say. But as the business began to set in, so did the 2020 pandemic, forcing both to shut down their primary businesses, which turned out to be a blessing. It offered time for Mike to begin designing the product that would look, feel and cost significantly different. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. Everyone from homeowners to commercial businesses are hopping on the train to add these beautiful accessories into their space. Hot or cold environment, home or commercial studio—the tubs were built with design and longevity in mind. “The one thing I’m still bullish on is I know it works,” Ryan says. “Anyone who gets a unit from us, their true testimony is that this would go onto their top three things they would NOT give up for their health and wellness. Right now the cold plunge is “kind of trendy, it’s kind of cool, but it’s effective. Two to three minutes, or even 60 seconds a day—there are very few things out there that give you the return you get from this.” The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Ryan also knows over the next one to two years they are going to learn so much about cold plunging. As more people do it, there will be more anecdotal data and validity to the practice.

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
