LIFESTYLE LETTER
November Thankful
November 2022 PUBLISHER
Laura Sabia | laura.sabia@citylifestyle.com ACCOUNT MANAGER
Kate Yoder | kate.yoder@citylifestyle.com
In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is on spending time with those that you love and encouraging giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our town the vibrant community that it is. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. This holiday season as we prepare to gather with our loved ones, and in the true spirit of thanksgiving, let’s set time aside to consider what truly makes life meaningful and stop to reflect on those blessings. Blessings to you and your family,

Jones Family Farms “BE GOOD TO THE LAND AND THE LAND WILL BE GOOD TO YOU.” PHILIP JAMES JONES, FARM FOUNDER, 1821-1912 Nestled in the White Hills of Shelton, Jones Family Farms is a family-friendly, 400-acre working farm that is sure to impress any visitor with its 19th-century dairy barn and homestead farmhouse in a peaceful, relaxing environment. As the holiday season approaches, Jones Family Farms is a staple for families both near and far attracting visitors from New York to Massachusetts all hoping to find the perfect Christmas tree, make unforgettable memories and enjoy the Jones experience we’ve all come to know and love. The farm is currently under the direction of the seventh generation to join the family – Jamie and Christiana Jones – along with their three children and many other family members from generations prior.

Jones Family Farms is open for tree season from the weekend before Thanksgiving through December 24. Reservations are required on the weekends of tree season for harvest-your-own trees and pre-cut trees via an online system in order to regulate the number of guests at the farm at any given time. Plan your day ahead and take the scenic route north up the Merritt Parkway about 45 minutes to your destination. Upon your arrival, you’ll find the finest selection of premium Christmas trees, including Blue Spruce, Balsam Fir, Douglas Fir, Fraser Fir and Angel White Pine. There are two different areas across 200 acres to harvest-your-own tree – Candy Cane Hill and the Merry Berry Valley Farm – or you can choose to visit the Homestead Farm and Barnyard where a Jones Farmer can help you find the perfect pre-cut tree. The Barnyard Shops, Harvest Kitchen and Jones Winery Tasting Room are a must-see before heading back on the road. Customers can shop hand-made crafts, fresh wreaths, handmade garland, premiere wines and more or simply enjoy a hot cup of mulled cider with a Jones’ famous trail mix cookie. Don’t forget to leave a Letter for Santa! To celebrate 75 years of harvesting trees, Jones Family Farms will commemorate the occasion with a special ornament honoring the milestone. Since the early 1990s, Jones Family Farms has been giving a pewter tree ornament to guests who harvest their own tree at the farm, and this year will be no different. Jean Jones, Jamie’s mother, is also producing a 75th Anniversary Christmas Tree Remembrances and Recipe Book. The first section is a scrapbook of how Philip H. Jones began and developed the farm’s Christmas tree business and the second section features holiday recipes from four generations of the Jones family. A perfect gift for the holidays!
Make the Most of Your Visit •
Before you visit, measure the height of your ceiling and bring a tape measure to the field. Trees tend to look smaller in the field than in your home.
•
Have enough helpers to help carry or pull your tree on a tarp to a bailing station. On weekends, there is a tree shuttle service from specific bailing stations.
•
Wear appropriate footwear. You will encounter an all-natural terrain!
•
Dress in layers. The farm is located on a hill and weather conditions can be cold.
•
The farm provides twine and tree bailing services to wrap the tree tightly for the ride home.
•
Handsaws are offered for guests. No power saws or axes are allowed in the fields.
•
Dogs are allowed in the fields.
•
Cash and credit are accepted.

Sorbaro’s Suc c e s s f u l C o op Cleaning Company, Declucks
Covid-19 brought an abundance of new hobbies to our Greenwich community. Owning chickens has been one of them; however, few realized at the time, is how much work it is to take care of them. Henry Sorbaro, a senior at Brunswick School, decided he was willing to do the work nobody wanted to do: clean chicken coops. He started the company in the fall of 2021 and since then has gained 20 very satisfied customers. His strong work ethic results in incredibly clean coops and very happy customers. Brett Ferraro said, “Declucks chicken services has helped me so much with my chickens and my coop for over 4 months now. Henry, the owner, is extremely polite and truly the nicest to work with. He’s professional, kind, and always comes to work with a smile. "My coop has never looked so good and my chickens have never been happier.” Sorbaro’s hard work has not gone unnoticed as he has been featured in both the Greenwich Times and Serendipity Magazine. Because of the overwhelming amount of community support and satisfaction Sorbaro has made merchandise that has sold quickly. The signature Declucks hat is still available on declucks.com/shop. Since the growth of his business, Sorbaro has expanded his company by adding contractors and he has started servicing towns in both Fairfield and Westchester counties. Declucks recognizes that each coop is different and requires different care, so they set up three different services: the Standard, the Premium, and the Declucks. They range in price in order to accommodate all of their customers. To schedule your first cleaning, please don’t hesitate to check out our website - declucks.com - or contact Henry Sorbaro. Declucks is appreciative of all the support they have received since starting the small business and can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Norwalk Moms Brings Glam Back Into The Streets of Fairfield County ARTICLE BY GENIE MORRIS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALEXANDRA SZEBENYIK

FASH ION F OR WA R D | STYLE + BE AUTY
Get your gowns out girls... After two years of an empty social calendar, Norwalk Moms founder and influencer Genie Morris has found a way to bring glam back into the streets of Fairfield County. She is breaking boundaries with her local community collaboration and doing so in a haute way — recruiting everyday mothers from the area to be featured in vogue-quality fashion shoots which feature high-end gowns and spotlight local businesses. Her community collaborations are highlighting local businesses and entrepreneurs in a unique and glamorous way. “Influencers are all promoting business and products, I wanted to try something different, something special that would get your attention. I love supporting local business and up and coming entrepreneurs but I want to inspire you to dream at the same time. We have all been locked away for what seems like forever and even now things don’t exactly feel like normal. We don’t often get to wear ball gowns and get our photos taken by a Vogue photographer”. I want people to see the photos and think, I could wear that, I could be that model.-Morris said. Partnering with Hungarian photographer Alexandra Szebenyik who has featured her work in Vogue Italy, Genie and Alexandra instantly connected over their love of over-the-top styling and their hard work ethic. Being busy
moms, their planning meetings are sometimes at 9 or 10 pm, going late into the night. But, I am hungry to create, and Alexandra is the same way — it's incredible to feel that I have a true creative partner where no idea is too big," Morris said. Alexandra was living in NYC shooting high fashion editorials and had recently moved to Fairfield County with her husband and 3-year-old daughter. I discovered her on Instagram and thought, "wow, who is this girl? We definitely need to collaborate!" Morris said. The two are responsible for every step of organizing and executing the shoot — from picking the looks, model, styling, editing, and selecting the shooting location. Their last shoot was shot at the Glasshouse in New Canaan and was featured in Westport Lifestyle Magazine. "We want to pick locals that support their community, people we truly believe in. In addition, we find it more interesting to choose women with little to no modeling experience because the transformation is incredible not only with the photos but how they see themselves after the shoot," Said Szebenyik. Their recent model, Carrie Georgette Kerner, had no modeling experience and — in her own words — basically lived in yoga and workout clothes 24/7. "Watching her transform before our eyes was amazing. Of course, we get to

visualize the transformation before it happens, so we know what she will generally look like before we shoot, but seeing Carrie see herself and truly love what she saw through this lens was just so special and rewarding," said Szebenyik. "I love the challenge of working with everyday moms and turning them into editorial models. It is remarkable to watch them change from sweats to gowns and observe how they see themselves after their transformations. Watching their confidence

grow in front of your eyes is so beyond rewarding." Emphasizes Szebenyik. The third installment of their collaboration was shot right here on Greenwich Ave at Saks works. It was recently acquired by Convene, a leading hospitality company whose mission is to elevate how people meet, work, and live. "We loved the architecture and design elements found at Saks Works. Each corner and nook provides a perfect backdrop to create these glamorous, and haute looks," Morris explains.

Beth Funari Sims, National Academy Sports Medicine (NASM) certified personal trainer and founder of online wellness hub, Miss Modern Wellness, shows us that taking care of ourselves doesn't have to be hard and that working out is a privilege, not a burden. With specialties in prenatal and postpartum exercise, fitness nutrition, behavior change, and corrective exercise, Beth's studies in Sports Medicine and Journalism, coupled with her lifelong appreciation for health, led her to where she is today — helping women and men achieve their wellness goals as attainably as possible. While she works a lot with pregnant women and postpartum moms, her client roster also includes people training for triathlons, those looking to shape up for an upcoming event, as well as those wanting to make lifestyle changes that will actually last. "That's what I hang my hat on," Beth tells me. "Helping people feel good in their own skin and feeling confident in their bodies in a way that's achievable and sustainable— not by a fad diet." Currently, Beth works with clients all over the country, helping them with individualized meal plans, fitness routines, and more. If in-person isn't an option, "Zoom gets the job done just fine," she says. Speaking on behalf of the relationship she holds with her clientele (most of whom are lifelong clients at this point), Beth states that if it's "anything health-related, I am their friend and their therapist." We talked about where the wellness world is going, how we can feel good about our bodies every day, and her expert advice on everything from preventing holiday weight gain to choosing the workout that's right for you.
TALKING WELLNESS With so much overwhelm in the health and wellness space today, especially on social media, it can be really difficult to know who to trust when it comes to taking care of our minds and bodies. Whether you're a seasoned wellness fanatic or someone just getting into the swing of things on the health front, Beth has the advice — and the credentials — that make her well worth your time and money, no matter what your current health needs are. To that end, Beth states that "a person should have credentials" when it comes to doling out nutrition and fitness tips, giving the age-old example that "just because it worked for your friend doesn't mean it's going to work for you." One of her fitness tips that can be applicable to anyone is to find the workout that is right for you, meaning one that makes you feel empowered, capable, and strong. "Do the cardio you like, not something you dread," she advises. Whether it's dance cardio, getting on the peloton, or simply walking, cardio is an excellent introduction as you take on your wellness journey." While cardio is definitely beneficial for the body and mind on so many levels (decreasing feelings of stress and anxiety, boosting mood, contributing to healthy body weight and

heart health), Beth emphasizes the importance of not ignoring other muscle groups. "I think everyone should be doing some sort of resistance training, whether it's weights or bands," she states. "That’s what’s going to change your body if you're looking for results — the outcome will be lean, tone muscles." The fitness expert also wants people who are seasoned in the world of wellness to remember that form is everything. "One thing that really enhances everyone’s results is making sure your form is perfect," she says. "That’s something that can make all of the difference."
FITNESS SHOULD BE FUN When asked where she thinks the fitness world is headed, Beth has already noticed a sizable shift leaning toward a hybrid model (going to workout classes and doing at-home workouts). "When there's a mix of modalities, they don’t get bored this way," she says. "People are learning to listen to their bodies more, and are actually acting on it." If it is weight loss you're after, Beth encourages her clients first and foremost to not feel shame around that. There is a lot
50
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S
of heightened sensitivity around body image right now, so adding guilt to that is unnecessary. That said, Beth made it clear that wanting to lose weight is not a bad thing, but sacrificing your quality of life (obsessing over food, for example) is never okay. "It is absolutely okay to change your lifestyle if you want to feel lighter and better, so long as you're doing it in a healthy way," she stated, adding that "while everyone's body is different and completely individualized, at the end of the day, it's caloric intake that accounts for weight loss or gain." Another common topic (or complaint, rather), especially from women, is bloating. Everyone wants to know how to prevent it, how to get rid of it, and how to stop it in its tracks altogether. Wanting to get to the bottom of bloat issues, Beth rattled off sound advice that anyone can adhere to. Whether you're someone who battles constant bloat or you want to have that extra slice of pizza without that food-baby feeling, listen up. "Bloating is very individual," Beth says. "Everything from stress to eating too quickly (which results in gulping air) to consuming packaged foods that have fake added sugars may cause you to bloat. Even cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower
are culprits to bloating, so if love them, eat them slowly and perhaps sparingly." It isn't only what we eat or don't eat, though. Our gut and our brain are interconnected, so feelings of stress and anxiety can cause bloating to occur as well, as can alcohol. "Especially carbonated alcohol," Beth adds. "When you're drinking alcohol, you are essentially dehydrating your body, which is why drinking water is so important." As with anything, she says, "Talk to your doctor about solutions. If you pay close attention to your triggers, you will be amazed at how quickly you can change the outcome."
WELLNESS ADVICE TO BOOT Here, Beth closes out our conversation with insight into what makes for a happy and healthy mind and body, no matter where you are in your wellness journey. Favorite at-home workout anyone can do? "If you just have your body to work with (no equipment), I love tricep pushups and squats. If your knees are healthy, you can do jump squats, mountain climbers, run in place, and variations of planks." Easy dinner ideas for the winter months? "Anything with sweet potatoes is great. Bake them, throw them in your air fryer, or even in the microwave. You can make them Mexican style with avocado and black beans or add them to salads to make them heartier." Tips for preventing holiday weight gain? "When you’re going into the holiday season with more parties and events happening, understand you don’t have to say 'yes' to everything. Make smart choices for the indulgences you really enjoy and don’t be too hard on yourself. If you overdo it, move on. On the fitness side, it doesn’t matter what time of day you work out, so long as you get it done. For example, schedule your workout early in the day if you know you get tired later. Put your yoga mat, weights, and tennis shoes by your bed so it's the first thing you see when you wake up. Do everything you can to set yourself up for success." How can we feel good about our bodies as we close out the year? "Make every effort to go for a quick walk — even if it's cold outside, it does wonders to boost your mood and give you energy. It's also important to note that in the winter, most of us are low on vitamin D, so getting your levels checked by your doctor is a good idea." Final words of advice? "Don’t wait until January 1st to start taking care of yourself. You’ll feel like the mountain is so much steeper if you wait to implement healthy habits. You can start today." You can find Beth on IG @missmodernwellness Her DMs are always open.

Christmas at Darien Sport Shop
Rich in traditions, old and new. Especially around the holidays. ARTICLE BY ANNA BARNE S
54
T R E N D SE T T E R | SHOPPI NG
Years ago, when I first moved to Fairfield County, downtown Darien became one of my most favorite places to explore. I’d drive down Post Road but inevitably would pass on the iconic Darien Sport Shop. I never stopped because, truthfully, I didn’t need any sports equipment. After a recommendation from a friend, I made my way inside and was truly blown away by the incredible fashion, accessories, and of course, sports equipment inside. It's no surprise that the name, Darien Sport Shop, is an ode to exactly how the establishment originated back in 1946. Stephen Zangrillo, known as ‘Mr. Z’ opened the store at just 22 years old after returning from WWII. A studied merchant, Mr. Z grew the business based around a guiding philosophy: treat your customers like they are old friends, and they’ll keep coming back. And they have. When his daughter, Gina joined the business full-time in 1994, the once sport-centric shop began to expand its inventory to men’s and women’s clothing. In fact, they even took a chance on two guys carrying a backpack full of ties in the late 90’s and therefore became one of the first retailers to carry the now, well-known brand Vineyard Vines. Today, Darien Sport Shop carries a myriad of upscale brands and designers. Brands like Ulla Johnson, Peter Millar, Ralph Lauren, Kinross, and more are beautifully displayed within the expansive store. A few years ago, a customer recommended to Gina they carry the brand Faherty. When their buyer liked it, they brought it into the store, and today it’s one of their best-selling lines. Gina’s son, and Mr. Z’s grandson, Greg Reilly, who is now the men’s buyer and heads up marketing, happily admits “We have some really well-connected customers. They know what they’re talking about, so we listen to what they are seeing in their travels and daily life.” Aside from their excellent fashion sense, the store also stocks an array of chic home goods perfect for a birthday, hostess, or housewarming gifts. Truthfully, there aren’t many things that Darien Sport Shop doesn’t carry. You name it, they likely have it. As Greg says, “Where else can you get a cashmere sweater and a trampoline?” DSS is a wonderful mélange of traditions, old and new. Trunk shows pop up throughout the calendar and they’ve started hosting fabulous fashion shows where the community can get together to view the season’s latest and greatest. But true to their roots, they still offer complimentary alterations for the life of their garments and continue to be a generous donor to local charities in our community. Perhaps their most beloved tradition is the yearly Christmas tree lighting which dates back to 1978. That year, in celebration of the season, Mr. Z decided to light his recently planted Christmas tree in the back lot on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. That original tree grew to be over 100 feet tall but was unfortunately lost in a bad

storm back in 2010. A new tree has been growing strong for the last 12 years and carrying on the Darien Sport Shop Christmas tradition. The celebration that day usually kicks off around 4:30 pm with live music, holiday treats, refreshments and caroling as Santa Claus (the real one) rides into town aboard a shiny, red firetruck courtesy of the Noroton Fire Department. After he makes his way through the crowd, he leads a countdown until the tree is inaugurally lit for the season. But as far as holiday festivities go, the shop doesn’t stop there. The entire holiday season is filled with extra cheer at Darien Sport Shop. The team offers complimentary gift wrapping and will even hold your presents to thwart plans of mischievous present seekers. On Saturdays in December, there’s live music and plenty of refreshments to calm any holiday stressors. While Santa normally pops in throughout the season, he was relegated to Facetime the last few years due to the pandemic. But if you ask me, anywhere that keeps Santa on speed dial is a place you want to be.

Your Autumn Dinner Party Is Served Catering experts Chef Kyle and Hannah Williams, owners of Savor & Swirl culinary company, create an outdoor dinner party with chef-driven perennial dishes served in beautiful seasonal settings.
For this alfresco Autumn Dinner Party, Chef Kyle draws on favorite fall recipes updated for a modern palate and paired with wine selections to complement the bountiful feast. Hannah creates an iconic autumn ambiance using artisanal table settings and mixed flannels for each guest to blanket any chill on a brisk evening. Whether for Friendsgiving, Thanksgiving or a new November tradition, it’s time to get outdoors again surrounded in sweater-weather coziness while sharing bites and clinks with family and friends.

Insider Tips for Hosting:
• Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!” • As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.” CONTINUED > NOVEMBER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Wine Pairing
According to Savor & Swirl, wine pairing doesn’t need to be overly complicated for a casual outdoor dinner party. Have a lighter and fuller body style of white and red available with some sparkling thrown in. “Lighter to medium-bodied wines from Rhône Valley, Italy or California would be a good place to start,” they state. “Viognier is one of our favorite wines that goes great with fall-inspired cuisines. Pinot Noir wine goes great with just about any food. Lean towards California or Willamette Valley for a new-world style and go with France for a more earthy, old-world style. A big bold Napa Cab would fall in perfectly for the grilled ribeye steak! Cheers!”
