YOUR HOME, Your Style SANDY EATON OF NEW DAY ORGANIZING EXPLAINS WHY ORGANIZED SPACES MAKE IT EASIER TO LIVE PEACEFULLY AND AUTHENTICALLY
Many people think organization is simply about reducing clutter. How does organization contribute to a home's overall style and aesthetic? People often think style comes from what you buy. I think it starts with what you can actually see. When counters are clear and everything has a place, your favorite pieces finally stand out. The artwork on the wall, family photos, a beautiful lamp, or a collection you've gathered over the years become the focus instead of the clutter around them.

“One thing I always remind clients is this: Your home should tell your story, not store your past.”
How can homeowners display meaningful collections, books, or décor without making a room feel crowded? One of the biggest mistakes people make is feeling like everything has to be on display. Our homes tell our story, but that doesn't mean every souvenir, family heirloom, or favorite book needs to be out all at once. Choose the pieces that make you smile every time you walk into the room. Give them a little space so they can be seen and appreciated.
How can organization help people better define and express their personal style at home? I think one of the biggest things clutter does is make it hard to see what we truly love. Over the years, our homes fill up with "just in case" items, unfinished projects, gifts we feel obligated to keep, and things that no longer fit our lives. Before long, those things start taking up the space that could be filled with the people, memories, and pieces that really bring us joy. When you take the time to edit those things, your personal style starts to show naturally. You find yourself choosing artwork, furniture, colors, and décor that reflect who you are today, not who you were 10 or 20 years ago.
What's one piece of advice you'd give readers who want a home that's as stylish as it is organized? I'd tell them to stop trying to create a perfect home and start creating one that works for them. The most beautiful homes I've walked into aren't always the biggest or the most expensive. They're the ones that feel welcoming, where everything has a purpose, and where the homeowners can actually relax and enjoy being there. When you're deciding what belongs in your home, ask yourself a simple question: Does this add value to my life? If the answer is no, it may be time to let it go. Every item you remove creates a little more space for the things that matter most, whether that's gathering around the dinner table, spending time with family, or simply enjoying a quiet evening at home. At the end of the day, that's what I want for every client. I want them to walk through the front door, take a deep breath, and feel like they're finally home. Because a home that feels peaceful will always be in style. Learn more about New Day Organizing at www. ndorganizing.com.

Vitamin A is essential to protecting the corneas of our eyes. By taking care of your corneas, you can extend the health of your eyesight and reduce vision loss with age. An easy way to remember what to eat for healthy eyes is to look for orange foods. Carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and butternut squash are all high in vitamin A.

Did you know that vitamin A is also imperative for skin health? So while you’re caring for your corneas, you’re also boosting your outer glow. If you want to kick it up a notch, be intentional about eating plenty of foods with omega-3 fatty acids to reduce acne and inflammation and help your skin produce its own collagen. For your healthy fats, go for flax seed, nuts, chia seeds, and fish.

WOVEN WITH INTENTION Fiber artist and fashion designer Megan Lagueruela honors Greensboro's rich textile history through sustainable, handcrafted collections ARTICLE BY KARI SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY BY AUTUMN HOLLIFIELD
Greensboro has a long-standing history with textiles. And while many manufacturers are long gone and factory structures repurposed, there are still some innovators who continue to carry the torch. Megan Lagueruela is one of those individuals. A self-described fiber artist and fashion designer, she grew up in an entrepreneurial family and gained valuable business acumen from her father. After learning how to sew as a young teen in home economics class, Megan “caught the bug” and eventually pursued a fine arts degree with a concentration in fashion and fibers at SCAD. Megan was taught that the logical next step would be to work at a major fashion house, but she wasn’t interested. The fashion world was eye-opening for her, and she saw how much waste and thoughtlessness was involved in the practice. Megan had a realization: “We’ve lost perspective on heritage craft.”

T R E N D SE T T E R | STYL E + BE AU T Y
After stints in Asheville and High Point, and working at her father’s local made-to-order furniture business, she knew there was a different way to do things. She bought a loom and a website domain and invested in fabric. She created her first look book of one-of-akind art wear and officially started her business, Megan-Ilene, full-time in 2019. Today, Megan works from her studio in Greensboro, where every piece is handtreated, cut, and sewn locally. Megan-Ilene releases a new collection of garments each spring and fall. Collections typically consist of about 20 items with a few colorways: there’s almost always a button-down shirt with a unisex cut, soft separates, a few dresses, a jacket, and accessories. Sustainability is central to her work. She exclusively uses natural, biodegradable fibers and follows a rigorous zerowaste approach to design. Megan weaves any salvage off-fall into new textiles, or finds other innovative ways to play with waste and scraps. Megan salvages even the tiniest scraps and threads, pressing them between organza and quilting them into distinctive textiles made entirely from reclaimed materials. “It tells the story of the pieces that I’ve made,” says Megan. “It’s a labor of love . . . archival confetti.” She carries around a sketch book and takes inspiration from the world around her: shapes, colors, architecture. She visits art galleries and museums. She pays close attention to fashion cycles, and keeps an eye to the major fashion houses. Megan has a knack for recognizing trends and transforming them into pieces that she would personally like to have and wear. “If I make something, it has to serve a purpose,” she says. “I’m always looking to answer the question ‘how do I make this practical?’” Megan’s currently working on her spring and summer 2027 collection, where she’s playing with modularity to make items more applicable to different body shapes. “When I work on designs, I find a theme, and that directs the color palette. Then that helps me with fabrics, and the fabrics may also inform CONTINUED >

the design,” she explains. Megan then starts building patterns off her ideas, first sketching them out on paper. After a few renditions, she takes the design to a sample maker. She schedules photoshoots with a local photographer to create her look book for the particular collection. Then begins the rigorous schedule of traveling to attend trade shows. Megan presents her collection to stores and wholesalers from all over the world. She also travels across the U.S. to attend fine craft fairs, trunk shows, and pop-ups. When Megan’s not busy traveling to craft and trade shows, she’s taking commissions for private customers or businesses. She’s had private label jobs with Wrangler and Lee and done commissions for furniture company showrooms. Megan is always planning for another season and thinking about what’s next. She enjoys researching and respecting historical textiles from across the globe. Her mind is always swirling with ideas about how to take fabrics and piece them into inclusive silhouettes, and how to merge historical craft and modern innovation. At the heart of it all is a desire to communicate something deeper than fashion alone. “I like to tell stories with fabric.”
ABOUT MEGAN-ILENE Every garment is a unique exploration of art and design that utilizes natural and upcycled textiles to create functional art-wear. Silhouettes are designed to offer inclusive sizing and each piece is is produced in-house, locally, by entities receiving a fair, livable wage. Finding Your Perfect Palette Felicia Yarboro, image consultant and color analyst, shares how color can transform your life
26
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | STYLE + BE AU T Y
Style is about more than following trends. According to image consultant and color analyst Felicia Yarboro, understanding the colors that naturally complement your skin’s undertones can transform not only your wardrobe, but also the way you present yourself to the world. Color analysis identifies whether a person has warm or cool undertones and determines which palette enhances their natural features. When clothing harmonizes with those undertones, people notice the individual first — not just the outfit. While color analysis has experienced renewed popularity through social media, Felicia believes its lasting appeal lies in helping people communicate confidence, credibility, and approachability before they ever speak. She emphasizes that personal style isn’t about chasing perfection or looking “pretty.” The colors, fit, and overall presentation we choose influence first impressions in both personal and professional settings. Rather than changing who someone is, the right colors simply bring out what’s already there.
If there’s one wardrobe upgrade Felicia recommends this season, it’s prioritizing fit. Even the perfect color can’t reach its full potential if clothing doesn’t complement the wearer’s proportions. Once the fit is right, color has the opportunity to brighten the complexion, create harmony, and help someone look effortlessly polished. The same principles extend beyond clothing. Hair color, makeup, and accessories all benefit from considering undertones, while jewelry and handbags should also reflect the wearer’s scale and features. The goal is a cohesive look that feels natural rather than forced. Above all, Felicia encourages people to stay authentic. Style should never feel like a costume. Whether you’re refreshing your closet or experimenting with new colors, the best wardrobe is one that helps you feel comfortable, confident, and unmistakably yourself. Ready for a consultation? Visit www. feliciayarboro.com or contact Felicia directly at felicia@feliciayarboro.com.

Style: We often associate it with fashion, the colors and clothing we wear, the accessories we choose, the way we decorate inside our homes. But style can extend beyond ourselves and our closets to also include the areas where we relax and entertain outdoors. A thoughtfully designed outdoor living space can make your home feel more personal and distinctly your own, while also being functional. Corey Mitchell, owner of NC Deck & Railing, knows first-hand that style doesn’t stop at the front door.
Corey’s journey into the outdoor living industry began long before launching the company. He spent summers working construction throughout high school and college and later climbed the ranks of a specialized home improvement company, eventually becoming vice president of operations. When he and his wife Paula decided to move from California to North Carolina to raise their children closer to family, they had to completely start over. “We earned our territory one house and one neighborhood at a time,” Corey says. The company specializes in new-build decks, deck repairs, sunrooms, pergolas, patio covers, and railings. Soon they will be expanding their services to include pavers, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, and more. Corey says NC Deck & Rail does things a bit differently from their competitors. They don’t provide estimates. “That’s just guessing,” Corey says. Instead, they provide full proposals in writing to the homeowner. They hold several meetings with their clients, while also meeting internally with a project’s production manager and crews. Everything is done to code, and they stick to the agreed-upon schedules and timelines. At completion, the production manager does a walkthrough to ensure everything is completed to their high standards. Ultimately, it’s always about doing the right thing. “We want happy customers,” Corey says. “We promise them a five-star experience.” For Corey and his team, every project begins with the same approach. They listen to the homeowner’s wants and needs. They’ll salvage an existing structure if they can. Sometimes they’ll talk a homeowner out of more expensive options and instead suggest features that better fit their
lifestyle and budget. Corey calls it “de-featuring, not devaluing” — creating a customized design without sacrificing quality. Even as styles evolve, Corey believes great design should never chase trends alone. “We want it to look like it was always part of the original house,” he says. In just three years, NC Deck & Railing has extended its reach to serve nearly 1,000 households annually throughout the Triad. They’ve earned multiple certifications (TimberTech and TrexPro®) and industry awards, including the Angi Super Service Award, Best of Houzz Service Award, and Google’s Benchmark 2026 Deckbuilder of the Year in Greensboro. After years in the industry, Corey still takes pride in driving through neighborhoods and pointing out projects that he and his team have completed. Each one represents more than a beautifully built deck or porch; it’s a welcoming space where families and friends gather and make lasting memories. DIY Photo To Canvas In A Snap ARTICLE BY ANGI HOCKETT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

about
STEP 1: First things first, grab your supplies. • Photo on photo paper • 1 ½ inch thick wrapped canvas • Mod Podge in Matte finish • Black spray paint in Satin finish • Clear spray paint in Satin finish • 4 inch or 6 inch foam paint roller • Small paint tray Place your photo on the clean, dry canvas to make sure it fits correctly. Trim if necessary. STEP 2: Spray paint the canvas sides and a little of the top with the black spray paint. It is VERY important to let this dry completely. STEP 3: Using your foam roller, roll Mod Podge over the entire top of the canvas. Center your photo on top of the wet Mod Podge. Smooth the photo with your hands starting in the middle and pushing out toward the edges STEP 4: Roll a thin even layer of Mod Podge over your photo. This is a little scary “painting” over your photo, but I promise it will dry clear. Once it is covered with a thin layer start at one side and roll straight rows from side to side, in the same direction, as to avoid roller lines once it dries. If you see small bubbles in the wet Mod Podge, it is too thick. Thin it out by taking an almost dry roller over the photo to lift some of the Mod Podge. Repeat until the bubbles are gone. Let this dry completely. STEP 5: Spray the top and sides of the entire canvas and photo with satin spray paint. Dry…Hang….High Five. Congratulations on your new Photo Canvas! This same technique can be used on 4x4 tiles of your choice to create custom coasters. You will add a bit of Peel and Stick Cork or felt to the back of the tile so the coaster doesn’t scratch. Cheers!

INGREDIENTS • 1 1/2 oz- Cucumber & dragon fruit gin • 3/4oz- Toasted black sesame Velvet Falernum • 1/2oz- Lime juice • Topped with ginger beer • Hawaiian black lava salt & black sesame
GARNISH • Small paint brush • Simple syrup • Hawaiian black lava salt mixed with a pinch of black sesame
INSTRUCTIONS Infused Gin: Infuse 1 whole peeled and cut cucumber in gin for a week. Strain the cucumbers out. Add 1 tablespoon of organic dragonfruit powder and mix very well with a whisk. To make the syrup, toast 1/2 cup of black sesame at 350 for 10 minutes. Take it out and let it cool. In a mortar and pestle, grind the toasted black sesame, but not too fine. Add the sesame into one bottle of John D. Taylor’s Velvet Falernum. Let that set for about 2 to 3 days and use cheese cloth to strain out the fine bits of sesame. Juice one fresh lime and strain to remove the pulp.
Cocktail: Paint a strip of simple syrup down a Collins glass. Take a spoon full of Hawaiian black lava salt mixed with black sesame and layer that down where the painted simple syrup was placed. In a shaker tin combine: 1 1/2oz cucumber dragon fruit gin, 3/4oz toasted black sesame Velvet Falernum, and 1/2oz lime juice and shake that up! Fill the painted glass with ice (I use crushed ice) and strain over the ice. Top with your favorite ginger beer (my choice is Fever Tree ginger beer).
