MAKING A VACATION OASIS—AT HOME

FOR NEARLY 26 YEARS, “A DOOR TO NOWHERE” IN THE BACK OF C.J. and Alex Murrays’ home near Horse Pen Creek Road led to an uninviting sharp slope. Its sole inhabitant: a lonely swing set, long abandoned by their now-grown children. Today, the steep grade has been shaped into an expansive, visually stunning retreat. The door to nowhere now leads to a 600-square-foot, multilevel and cantilevered wraparound deck, accommodating multiple seating areas and a pergola for shade. The swing set has been replaced by an inviting patio and fire pit. Some old railroad ties that had served as a retaining wall of sorts are gone, and in their place, a handsome stone wall. “We wanted a little oasis,” C.J. says. “We thought it’d be nice to come out from the living room or kitchen and have somewhere to hang out.” But to call this elaborate, well-designed structure just a “deck” would be an understatement. This is no square platform tacked on the back of a house, but a custom-built addition made to integrate almost seamlessly with the home and made to last. Looking up from below, the angled corners echo the shape of the roofline, and the composite floor decking is also set at a diagonal, enhancing the visual interest. The spacious shape lends itself to entertaining; there’s an easy flow between the levels and seating areas. Wood posts, wood-alternative decking, and black aluminum pickets and rail caps ensure low-maintenance durability while weaving together a harmonious combination of textures and colors. “Typically the projects we do involve design work, to provide people space that they want to use, that they want to have parties on. We don’t take any joy in building a project that someone is not going to use,” says the Murrays’ builder, Greg McNeer, president of Archadeck of the Piedmont Triad. The company, which has had a local presence since 1991, specializes in custom design/build of outdoor additions, including decks, porches, sunrooms and patios. Greg sees a trend among homeowners who need more space but are deterred from moving by climbing mortgage rates. Instead of looking for a bigger house, they are opting to expand. A deck or sun-

room is often the first thing they think of. “Some of the most popular things we build here in the Piedmont Triad are three-season rooms with Eze-Breeze windows,” Greg says. He explains Eze-Breeze is a sliding window system that effortlessly transforms a screened porch into a multi-season room. Some of the firm’s more elaborate designs might include vaulted ceilings and stone fireplaces. They may loop around homes and snake down hillsides, like the Murrays’ project. “We kind of had an idea of the components we wanted, and Greg was able to put it down on paper,” C.J. says. “Greg came out here and walked the property with us, said, ‘OK, let me go back and come up with some potential plans,’” Alex says. “And he put together several different options, came out again, with some flags, started marking things out.” Greg describes what his company does as “artful solutions” to extend living spaces. Unlike some contractors, he doesn’t operate from scribbled 14

notes but instead provides formal proposals and blueprints to ensure everyone is on the same page. He also collaborates with other contractors the homeowners might bring into the project. For the Murrays’ project, for instance, he coordinated with New Garden Landscaping and Nursery, which constructed the patio and fire pit. Underneath a hood of tinted plastic, the machine fires into a sheet of plywood, carving out dozens of little ornaments shaped like Santa’s heads. Ronnie is one of the makers at Forge Greensboro. At the laser cutter, he also crafts wooden earrings, sunglasses, necklaces and combs. “If I can think of it, I can make it in here,” he says. “I come here, and all the tools I need are here. What The Forge has done is given me the opportunity to create.” About 200 people work out of Forge Greensboro, among them, metalsmiths, woodworkers, ceramicists and clothing designers.

Tucked into the back of Lewis Street, the shared maker space offers the use of lathes, mills, 3D printers and sewing machines, along with the Boss Laser Cutter. The 8,000-square-foot facility has attracted a number of people who are looking to get a business off the ground but don’t have the capital for their own space and machinery. “The general idea is that we’re like a gym for people who like to build things,” says executive director Joe Rotondi. “People pay month to month and get 24/7 access to the facility and use it how they will. For some people, that’s just accessing a hobby affordably. For others, it’s about learning new skills. And there are people who are trying to make some income.” A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Forge Greensboro got its start in 2013. Joey Adams was doing some wood and metalwork at the time and began reaching out to others to gauge whether they had any interest in sharing the expense for a workspace. “I was looking for like-minded people who wanted to do some things outside of our garages and work together on some projects,” he says. “We started having twice-a-month meetups in coffee shops. Started out slow. One person showed up at first, and then two people showed up, and then 15 people and then 30 over the course of a few months.” The group set up shop with some donated equipment inside what is now Fainting Goat Spirits on Lewis Street. The building had once been a blacksmith shop (hence the name “Forge”). During Forge Greensboro’s first year, its makers formed 16 businesses and filed nine patents, according to Joel Leonard, who has served as community developer for the organization. Within about two years, it had outgrown the 3,400-square-foot space at the CONTINUED >

Andy renovated the building three years ago and sits on the board of the organization. WHY DO YOU FEEL SOMETHING LIKE FORGE GREENSBORO IS NEEDED? When I was first introduced to it, I had no idea that the Forge would be what it is today for Greensboro. I looked at it more as a hobbyist space, an opportunity for collaboration. There are not many places where you can get heating/air conditioning, a conference room, a good membership base for $54 a month. It’s given a hand up to people who wouldn’t be able to start a business because they didn’t have a location, or the machinery and equipment, or the social capital of the people willing to share their ideas. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY THE CLIMATE IS LIKE FOR UP-AND-COMING ENTREPRENEURS HERE IN GREENSBORO? It just keeps getting better. We have an affordable city. The quality of life is strong, and opportunities are strong for the future. It’s a good environment for young and old entrepreneurs who are looking to reinvent themselves. What lessons have you taken away from some of the people who have set up shop at Forge Greensboro or HQ Greensboro? I have networked with several of them with ideas that I couldn’t take to fruition without somebody else’s expertise. I’m great at ideas, great at funding them, but I can’t execute them without some of the expertise I’ve met at the Forge and HQ.

IN A DIGITIZED, MECHANIZED, “ROBOT-ICIZED” WORLD, JAKE WOSINSKI DISPLAYS A REFRESHINGLY ANALOG APPROACH TO DESIGN. He uses neither computers, nor CAD, nor 3D printers. Instead, he gives his exquisite handiwork that increasingly rare human touch. The owner of Jacob Raymond Custom Jewelry sums up his method as, “using Old World techniques to make heirlooms for today.” Step inside his shop/maker’s space at 121 W. McGee St., and you’ll see what he means. Behind the glittering display cases lies an array

of instruments for carving, melting, molding and polishing precious metals and gems into unique adornments.

“My goal is to make jewelry that doesn’t look mass-produced,” he says. “Everything here is one-of-a-kind.” He shows a few examples: a sterling man’s ring, carved into the shape of a car’s front end. A silver pendant, embellished with a piece of extinct mammoth tusk. Substantial wedding bands, sparkling with elaborate, hand-tooled patterns. Custom engraving is one of Jake’s specialties. When we visited, he was fulfilling an order for a local businessman who wanted his company logo displayed on a ring. Here are a few of the intriguing contraptions this award-winning jeweler employs to ply his craft:
