s we turn the page of this year’s calendar to December, it seems like it was just yesterday we were singing carols, unwrapping gifts and toasting to 2t017. Now—as unbelievable as it may seem—it’s time to do it all over again. The holiday season and the end of the year always bring about a feeling of reflection and a feeling of closure. HENDERSON MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL ACCEPT PITTMAN NEIGHBORHOOD REVITALIZATION PLAN Henderson's mayor and city council recently accepted the Pittman Neighborhood Revitalization Plan, approving recommendations for improvements to one of Henderson’s most mature areas: the Pittman neighborhood. The plan is a result of Invest Health Henderson, a public-private initiative created to improve health outcomes in geographic areas facing the biggest barriers to better health. The city received a $60,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Reinvestment Fund to create the Pittman Neighborhood Revitalization Plan and implement change at the neighborhood level. Henderson was selected to receive the grant from among 170 communities that applied to the National Invest Health, Strategies for Healthier Cities program. The Pittman Neighborhood Revitalization Plan identifies goals and provides strategies for improvements in five principal action areas: food and health, housing, safety, education and workforce, and transportation. Feedback obtained from community engagement results was used to develop recommendations that include: • Addition of a school garden classroom at Edna Hinman Elementary School in partnership with Green Our Planet and The LandWell Company • Partnership with Touro University Nevada, School of Physician Assistant Studies, to bring the Mobile Healthcare Clinic to Pittman and downtown Henderson once a month • Expanding the operation in Henderson of the Veggie Buck Truck, an existing pop-up mobile farmers market, targeting low-income neighborhoods in food deserts • Working with Hinman Elementary School’s Supper Club program to provide meals to students through Three Square Food Bank after school before they go home Settled in 1929 to provide housing to Boulder (Hoover) Dam construction workers, Pittman still maintains its original street layout. It is generally bounded by Galleria Drive on the north, Pabco Road on the east and Boulder Highway running diagonally on the west.
GALLERIA AT SUNSET DONATES TO LAS VEGAS VICTIM'S FUND Galleria at Sunset announced half of all proceeds from ticket sales for the Oktoberfest event will be donated to the Las Vegas Victim’s Fund. According to Galleria's Facebook page, a little more than $2,500 was raised for the fund, which will be used to provide relief and financial support to the victims and families of the Las Vegas mass shooting in early October.

COOKIE JAR HOLIDAY RECIPES TO TRY WITH YOUR FAMILY Holiday recipes provided by Loren Paglia from Loren's Vegas Delights.
CRANBERRY LEMON SCONES With the perfect texture and warm flavor, these scones are perfect for an afternoon snack with a cup of tea on a cold day this holiday season.
Ingredients 2 cups flour 3 ounces unsalted butter 1/3 cup sugar 1 tablespoon baking soda 1 tablespoon lemon zest 1/4 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream 1 cup of dried cranberries 2 egg yolks 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Instructions 1. Mix flour, unsalted butter, sugar, baking powder, lemon zest and salt in a food processor until it forms a crumbly texture. 2. Transfer into a bowl and fold in whipping cream, cranberries, egg yolks and vanilla. Turn dough on a floured surface until it all comes together. 3. Shape dough into an 8-inch diameter circle and cut with a sharp knife into eight even wedges. 4. Brush tops of scone with an egg wash mixture, 1Â egg yolk and 1 tablespoon of cream and bake at 425 degrees for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. 5. Form a lemon glaze with 1/2 cup of powdered sugar and 1/4 cup of lemon juice mix and drizzle over scones when cooled.

You'll need an empty box, plastic wrap, wrapping paper and a holiday gift tag.
Yields 3-4 dozen cookies. A classic holiday treat, these cookies are fun to make and perfect to serve at your holiday party!
Ingredients 3/4 cup sugar 3/4 cups (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened 1 egg
1 Wrap treats in plastic wrap.
1/4 cup molasses 2 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 1/2 teaspoons allspice 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions 1. Cream together sugar and butter until fluffy, then add egg and molasses. 2. Combine flour, baking soda, salt, allspice, cin-

This year, Ethel M Chocolates is celebrating the 24th anniversary of its Holiday Cactus Garden lighting event. Held from November 7 to January 1—and open Thanksgiving, and Christmas Eve but closed Christmas Day—the Cactus Garden is the largest in the southern United States and covers more than 3 acres with more than 1 million holiday lights. The event is free to the public and lit nightly from sundown to 10 p.m. Food and toy donations can be made, and all donations support Three Square and HELP of Southern Nevada. This year, there will also be a skating rink, open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with prices varying from $10 to $20. This event is a great activity for families, friends or dates and will put everybody in the holiday mood.

un by a dedicated team of directors and volunteers, The Shade Tree is an organization committed to making a difference for women, children and elders in the Las Vegas area who are in need. Beginning as the Jubilee Ministries in 1989 and officially becoming The Shade Tree in 1990, its mission is to serve abused and homeless women and children. The Shade Tree is the only 24-hour accessible shelter in Las Vegas and provides comfort and relief to those in crisis who are victims of homelessness, domestic violence or human trafficking. Though the organization was started to serve women and children, in the past few years, they have begun to serve more senior citizens who are victims of elder abuse. Stacey Lockhart became executive director of The Shade Tree in July and has been working hard her first few months to help The Shade Tree grow and make plans for the future. She plans to help The Shade Tree reconnect with the community and continue to build a hopeful and positive atmosphere for those who need it.

The Shade Tree is not only providing shelter and healing for victims, but it’s also helping them prepare and build a healthy life for themselves when they leave. The Shade Tree has a partner on their campus called Noah’s Animal House which provides shelter and care for women’s and children’s pets. “I chose The Shade Tree because I wanted to continue making a difference every day," Stacey says. "Women and children need role models and support from people who care about them indiscriminately." The Shade Tree is always accepting volunteers. Volunteers can teach classes like yoga, computer skills, parenting or financial literacy. They can also participate in activities with the children and help host birthday parties. Stacey stresses there are many things people can do to help
