Since moving to Greeley in 2020, my family and I have learned of unique places and experiences Greeley has to offer- with many things still left to discover. We love to get outside and get involved with our community, which is why as the new editorial coordinator, I am thrilled to share the amazing community of Greeley that I have come to love- starting with this month's Explore Issue. It can be so easy to get stuck in the daily routine of work and responsibilities and leave no time for trying new things. But the truth is - that is really a sad and unfulfilling way to go through life. We try our best as a family, to take advantage of any free time we have to explore. I've realized that "adventure" and “exploration” doesn't even have to be something big and crazy. It can be playing a board game out on the patio, walking a new trail or going out to find a fun cookie place we've never been to before in a different part of town. Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To book that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar. If April showers bring May flowers, make time to play in the rain! Here’s your reminder to - and I say this with warmth in my heart - get lost! ;) Happy April!

St reng then i ng You r Fa m i ly Th roug h Board Game s Lane and Amy Mattox have been hosting board game events nearly every week since 2011. It started as adult-only evenings at their house and expanded into breweries, libraries, and restaurants, and eventually to Greeley’s own board game parlor, Greeley Game Night at Boomer House. As the two carved a path in the board game industry, they wanted to include their three children. “It had always been adults only but we wanted to start getting the kids involved. They were starting to get jealous of our Saturday game nights and we wanted to encourage them to join and maybe even start their own club or extracurricular activity centered around them,” Lane mentioned. Getting kids to sit down and play a game can be a hurdle, but it creates a more intimate family experience. “The bonding that happens through family board game nights is incredible,” Amy replied.

Lane and Amy are pros at helping families launch their own game nights. “Kids are adventurous and open- they want to try something new,” said Amy. “When new families come into Boomer House, I ask them to let me put my hands on their shoulders and steer them in a good direction so they all enjoy the experience.” For a successful game night, she suggests letting the kids pick at least some of the games, always having snacks, and creating a mutual agreement for a “no screen zone.” Greeley Game Night at Boomer House hosts all-age events from 1-5 p.m. on Fridays and Sundays, as well as an adultsonly night from 6-11 p.m. on Saturdays. They have around 400 games to choose from that range from social and lighthearted games to more in-depth and strategic games. One thing is certain- whatever your board game style is, you will find something you love at Boomer House!

Her and her husband Sean, along with their two kids are proud to call this place their home. Sonja loves the small-town mindset that Greeley has. “It’s small enough that there are always people around who know you, but it’s also large enough to be your own person,” Sonja said. They have consistently felt so much support from their community, and are excited to be able to turn around and give it back through their family-owned local businesses. With 4 liquor stores, and 3 Hiroshi restaurants with a fourth one on the way, their businesses are directly benefiting the people that live within the community. “Further fostering the development of Greeley is something that is important to us. We are committed to being the pillar of the community that we once leaned on,” she said. When Sonja was growing up, Greeley didn’t go past 47th Avenue. Her house backed up to 35th Avenue and it was just a field before the Westlake Village Shopping Center was built. “Now, there is so much to do here. There are more stores and choices that we didn’t have when I was growing up. There is also access to trails and safe spaces to get to without having to drive,” she said. Thinking back to her childhood, Sonja reminisced about the freedom she had riding her bike to the pool or to Tropical Sno. “We could go everywhere and be safe and have reign of the town.” Now she is excited to help her kids establish some memories of their own. “It’s really fun to watch both of my kids grow up here with the same support I had,” Sonja remarked. “My daughter, Brynlee loves her town and is already very opinionated about what the best places here are,” she laughed.

While Brynlee and her little brother are growing up in a very different Greeley than Sonja and Sean did, one thing is evident - Greeley is home. “I hadn’t wanted to stay here, but when I moved away, I never found a place that felt the same,” Sonja recalled. “Greeley had all the aspects of a community that we were looking for when deciding where to raise our kids. Maintaining our roots and giving back to our community through our various businesses is important to us, and we are thrilled to be able to do so.” Born and raised in Greeley, my husband and I are proud to be raising our family here. Our kids, Brynlee and Preston, help us feel alive and enjoy the little things. In addition to real estate, our family owns and operates eight independent businesses throughout Greeley and Northern Colorado. Our entrepreneurial spirit drives us to work hard and give back to our community.

Sonja’s work as a realtor is inspired by her parents who still live in the same house she grew up in. All Syntax Precision Spirits products are handmade from scratch—small-batch spirits from grainto-glass—using local, raw ingredients and pure Colorado whitewater. Greeley Country Club was established in 1920 introducing the Bunker to Greeley’s bar scene shortly after. The Bunker was originally founded as a “men’s only” lounge, only to become co-ed in 2018. A single mother of two young children had to leave work to take her feverish toddler from daycare to the doctor. The child had a miserable ear infection, so mom stopped for a prescription. She hurried back to her car through snow and wind, buckled her fussy daughter into her car seat, put her key in the ignition and the car wouldn’t start. She grabbed her phone and just stared at it. She had no family, no one to turn to; her neighbors were all working. With tears running down her face she called her son’s school, she needed to be sure he stayed safe until she arrived. She was distraught and shared her dilemma with the school administrative assistant, who suggested she call 211, which started a process to connect her to assistance. Weld Women2Women (W2W) board members never know the identities of the women that receive a “hands-up” grant. A request appears on their computer for voting from one of the 90+ referring nonprofit agencies, schools or churches who vet the situation as frontline partners of W2W. These referring partners are knowledgeable about resources in Weld County that can resolve challenging issues and navigate women through the process to available funding. W2W is notified if no other agency has available funding or if immediate action is required to avoid escalating the problem. Board members only see details such as, ‘Single employed mother with two dependents; took brief time off work to care for a sick toddler. Then her vehicle quit running. She needs her car repaired to get to work, get son to school and daughter to daycare. She doesn’t have money to pay for repairs, especially after a doctor visit, paying for prescriptions, lost time at work. The request itemizes vehicle repairs and the cost from a trusted repair shop.’ Board members vote, responding

within 24-48 hours. If approved the bill is paid directly to the service provider. Unexpected financial challenges result in falling behind and things start to crumble. If W2W helps and the service cost exceeds the maximum $750; they ask if the service provider will set-up a reasonable payment plan to carry the “balance due” for the woman. Our biggest concern is sustainability. A woman is only eligible one time for a “hand-up” award. The mission of W2W is to assist Weld women in crisis, anonymously and with dignity so she can remain independent and provide security for her family.

HISTORY AND GIVING Ten women gathered around the W2W founder’s dining room table in 2009 and each donated $100. Then each woman recruited 10 of her friends to do the same and established this nonprofit organization and the tagline: The Power of the Purse! Their annual 100 by $100 fundraising campaign continues the final 100 days of each year (9/23 to 12/31). An affordable $180 Turn auto-giving option can be set-up to donate $15 monthly - totaling $180/year. W2W has awarded financial assistance to 2,149 women since Jan. 2009 through Dec. 2022 and invested $1,194,163 during that time back into the local economy while supporting the businesses that provide the necessary services to the women they serve.

WELD COMMUNITY FOUNDATION’S COMMITMENT TO STRENGTHENING AND ENRICHING WELD COUNTY

For the past 25 years, the Weld Community Foundation (WCF) has centered itself around one thing - “Spread the Good.” This adopted tagline stands as the pinnacle behind why this foundation - comprised of nearly 170 donor-sponsored funds netting approximately $54 million in total assets - remains an integral piece of the growth and development of Greeley and beyond. “At WCF, our staff has front row seats to all of the good happening within our communities,” Director of Communications, Tim Coons said. “Whether it is the compassion and care demonstrated by donors, the behind the scenes work of our community non-profits, or witnessing students take scholarships off to college to build their future - we just enjoy watching our community flourish.” While WCF is able to work on a multitude of projects through specific, donor directed funds, one fund stands out for its flexibility and impact on the Greeley community. The fund itself is called “Impact,” which is a flexible fund that allows the Board of Directors to identify needs and provide grants to a variety of causes that help Greeley, and the greater Weld County area, grow stronger and more vibrant in the process.

“With many of the recent projects the Impact Fund has helped sponsor, they all have the same goals: to speak to the love and loyalty people have for where they live, to help endear more people towards their community, and to enrich and expand pride for Weld County,” shared Coons. Recently, WCF’s Impact Fund has contributed to a variety of projects to enrich Greeley, including grants to the University of Northern Colorado to revive Summer Concerts Under the Stars in 2023, commissioning an art project for the new High Plains Library and Innovation Center downtown, and commissioning the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra’s composer-in-residence to write a seven-movement piece capturing the history of Weld County. In addition to the grants given from the Impact Fund, it’s worth noting WCF’s work in scholarships. Made possible by the generosity of donors, scholarship funds held at the Foundation will continue to aid students in 2023. Technology Focused, Relationship Driven A Family’s Investment into a Technology Business Built Like No Other

Our lives are intertwined with technology, and as a result, we have to be smart with how we understand and utilize these devices to manage our lives. On an individual level, this may seem doable, but for those managing a business, the task is immeasurably greater, and comes with an increased amount of risk and needed expertise. Connecting Point is a family-owned company in Northern Colorado that has remained consistent in its commitment to help navigate this ever-changing environment. “We’ve come to realize that what we do every single day is create building blocks,” Andy Warner, Connecting Point’s Chief Financial Officer said. “People and businesses are utilizing technology to thrive in their everyday lives like never before, and our team gets to be a part of helping our clients through that process and share in the satisfaction as we see tangible results.”

Now celebrating its 40th Anniversary in serving the technological needs for businesses throughout Northern Colorado, Connecting Point didn’t always look like the current IT services-driven business that it is today. Connecting Point was originally established in 1982 by Andy and Scott’s father Ted Warner. It started as a retail computer store named Computers West in Sterling, Colorado. In its early years the store was poised to provide personal computers and software programs to an expanding market of local consumers. A few years later, Ted bought into the developing computer-store franchise network called Connecting Point and with increased demand and opportunity, he was involved in franchising several additional stores across Northern Colorado, Southern Wyoming, South Dakota and Northwest Nebraska. however, there was another market change- the computer service industry. With the commoditization of the computer industry, and retail sales being dominated by large corporations, Ted saw another opportunity to stay relevant in the market and, more importantly, develop deeper relationships with his clientele - a decision which set the trajectory for where the business exists today. “For the first 15 years of the business, we were primarily a retail store,” Connecting Point President Scott Warner said. “For these past 25 years, our focus has flowed through the lens of client service- how can we help businesses establish, manage and secure their technology in a way that benefits their organizational mission?” After transitioning away from solely being a product reseller, Connecting Point began working with clients in a varied fashion, but as early managed service offerings came to market, delivering those services in an À la carte fashion was very cutting edge. However, through the early 2000s, the suite of available managed IT services expanded and Ted realized that maximum value and client engagement existed when products, projects and services could be delivered as a package - positioning Connecting Point as a fully outsourced IT department for their clients in the SMB (small to medium sized businesses) space. “My dad’s vision for that phase of engagement started by realizing that every company required professional partnerships,” Scott recalled. “Whether it’s an attorney, a banker, or an accountant, they have someone who takes care of them and provides them with a critical service. He believed that having a technology provider was just as critical a relationship for a business to establish and maintain.”

Originally, Ted’s plans for the evolution of Connecting Point were going to take place without his sons, as both Scott and Andy had intentions to pursue career paths outside of the family business. However, after returning from college at Purdue University, Scott’s desire to find a tech-related sales and marketing job intersected with Ted’s proposition to get his feet wet in the tech-industry by working at Connecting Point which proved to be a lasting decision. On the other hand, Andy thought the constant “change” in the IT realm seemed somewhat unstable and influenced his decision to pursue a career in finance and accounting, becoming a CPA and functioning in varied operational and consultative capacities. But in 2015, Ted shared a potential plan with Andy to transition the family business and transfer ownership to Scott - who had been with Connecting Point for nearly eight years at the time. As the trio worked together on the succession plan, it came to fruition in 2019, when Ted became a “utility” man of sorts and Scott and Andy stepped into their new executive roles. “Truly, the transition was about a five-year process from start to finish,” Andy said. “And even then, our dad stayed around to help with our team and for our clients. Ensuring a smooth and successful transition took a lot of work, coordination and flexibility. But with all of that work in the rear-view mirror, he gets to enjoy retirement while Connecting Point continues in our care.” Today, Connecting Point serves small-tomedium sized businesses across Northern Colorado, Denver, and Southern Wyoming and has solidified itself as one of the premier managed IT and cybersecurity services providers

across the region and the country. Visit Greeley’s role in creating an enhanced quality of life for Greeley residents

Visit Greeley is a Destination Marketing and Management Organization focusing on promoting the community and building its brand as a desirable destination for leisure travel, meetings, conventions, sports, and more. This work creates social and economic opportunities that go far beyond tourism and benefits all local residents! Below are three ways tourism increases a community’s quality of life:

Tourism has tremendous economic value. A booming tourism industry fuels business income and tax revenues that support infrastructure such as roads, parks, hospitals, schools, and community areas. According to the 2021 Travel USA Report for Colorado, “Colorado’s overnight trip expenditures generated a total spending of $17.023 Billion. While Day trips generated $4.05 Billion.”

Tourism helps to preserve and evolve local culture. Local museums and historical sites can see increased attendance which would not be

sustainable by residents alone. Meanwhile, tourists bring their own perspectives and traditions into the communities they visit, creating cultural interchanges that have lasting positive effects.
