LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Women’s Issue We dedicate our May issue to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each and every one of them and the impact they have had on my life and the lives of others. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is confidence and, at the same time, the ability to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out greatness in them, too. Women celebrating and encouraging each other to succeed rather than competing with one another is so beautiful and rewarding. Inspiring and empowering the people in our lives can be something that comes naturally and the impact of intentionally looking for ways to build up those in our community is so powerful. We all want to be seen, and when we share encouragement and consideration to those around us barriers break down. In this month’s issue, we are sharing stories of women who have made their mark in our community in one way or another. From award-winning country music star Miranda Lambert giving back to local artisans right here in Greeley, to prominent Greeley women sharing stories to their younger selves, and local businesswomen sharing how they find balance in their lives as working moms. We also celebrate female entrepreneurs like Teri Segelke, owner of J&T Feeds, who is celebrating 20 years in business this year, to Steph Sipres and Wendy Ramirez, owners of Thyme & Seasons Flower and Gift Market, who are celebrating their first few months. In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to support each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. I also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for their impact on your life. You won’t regret it. Sincerely,

If I Was a Cowboy Miranda Lambert sports Greeley Hat Works in her newest music video, showing girls everywhere that they, too, can be cowboys ARTICLE BY CAITLYN OLSON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

“If I was a cowboy, I’d be the queen” is the famous line from the chorus of Miranda Lambert’s newest song “If I Was a Cowboy.” While the song’s lyrics, vocals, and style are enough to make any country music fan sing along, it’s the local connection to the song that has Greeley residents on the edge of their seat. The music video for the hit song, “If I Was a Cowboy,” which after only two months had nearly two million views on YouTube, features a custom-created hat, made by Greeley Hat Works owner, Trent Johnson.

The opening scene of the video, directed by Trey Fanjoy, presents Lambert rocking a full cowboy getup, untying her horse, and riding into the sunset with the one and only Greeley Hat Works proudly displayed atop her head. While Trent Johnson has been a proud Greeley representative to numerous big celebrity names, the connection with Lambert is particularly notable. Not because of the numerous awards she’s collected over the past two decades, or even her being named

2022’s “Entertainer of the Year” at the 57th annual Academy of Country Music Awards, but because of her heart for giving back to communities and her role as a strong role model for women everywhere. In 2009, Lambert founded the MuttNation Foundation “to ensure that as many dogs as possible would have a safe and happy place to call home.” In 2021 alone, MuttNation donated over $250,000 to animal shelters across the country. Lambert is an advocate for adopting and fostering shelter dogs, and volunteering at local shelters. She consistently encourages her fans to give back in whatever ways they can. Beyond her desire to give back to local shelters and other community organizations, Lambert sets an example for girls by encouraging them to be themselves. Lambert once stated that the female vocalists she’s always admired are Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton, and Loretta Lynn. Though, over the years, Lambert herself has become a role model for young cowgirls everywhere. The country music superstar has long been a supporter for empowering young women through positive body image and says, “It’s ok to be yourself.” Lambert encourages young women to be comfortable in their own skin, no matter their shape or size, telling HuffPost Live, “It’s all about who you are on the inside and what you stand for.” Lambert’s example of body positivity and authenticity make her the perfect icon for Greeley cowgirls to admire. out there. Miranda’s clothing line reflects Lambert’s roots, style, and attitude focusing on comfort, fit and quality. Everything from apparel, accessories, and, of course, cowboy boots are available at Bootbarn stores nationwide. “We always love seeing our community of beautiful boss ladies rocking Idyllwild; that always makes us smile,” Miranda quotes. As you listen to Lambert’s “If I Was a Cowboy,” and watch the beautifully directed and designed music video, look out for a Greeley Hat Works creation. And remember, in the words of Miranda Lambert herself: you too can be a cowboy and a queen. “If I Was a Cowboy” appears on Lambert’s album Palomino, debuted April 29th.

LETTERS FROM PROMINENT GREELEY WOMEN TO THEIR YOUNGER SELVES

Dear Younger Me PHOTOGRAPHY BY LILLIAN LENS PHOTOGRAPHY If you had the chance to send a letter to your younger self what would you say? Would you urge yourself to spend more time enjoying the present moment? Share life lessons that you would have benefitted from back then? Or encourage yourself to keep going knowing that, in the future, things will turn out ok? We challenged four prominent Greeley women to do just that – craft a letter to their younger selves and reflect on their lives and how they became the women they are today. These are their stories, and we challenge you to think: what is yours?

DEAR YOUNGER ME, You won’t realize it for many years, but you are very blessed. Your mother will be your champion your entire life, and your father will instill a determination in you that will be critical to survival and success. The life you imagined will quickly be rerouted, but your tenacity and grit will see you through. You will experience the pain of a destructive relationship, but with great fortitude, you will take your sons to start a new life. From that point on, you’ll begin a journey of self-discovery and reflect on what was lost but what can still be. Your belief that success is being a good mother and wife will change as you enter the workforce. Though you’ll have no clear goals, skills, or college degree, you will find your path. Driven by the love of your children and the inner strength that was instilled in you since childhood, you will set out toward the pursuit of finding the bold, professional, and confident woman inside you. With the help of many amazing mentors, you will begin to see the possibilities and promise that you have never before envisioned. You will raise two incredible young men and find your true love. You will be fierce in your determination to give back to your community and committed to making a difference in the lives of the women around you. You will find peace in knowing that you have accomplished more than you ever thought possible– and along the way, helped others do the same. CONTINUED > MAY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Linda Winter Chief Shopping Officer at Accessories with a Flair!...and Hair

DEAR YOUNGER ME, Little lady, you are lucky to have been born at this time, in this place, and in this family! You will be raised with great support, fun times, and a positive attitude. Your parents will teach you the importance of being a community volunteer. You will never really know what your father did working for the federal government, and your mom will inspire you to be creative and have a love of playing the piano, violin and guitar. Even at a young age, you will know who you are and will always strive to be successful. You will want to always have your own business, so you will never be employed by anyone. You will learn the secret to success is...do whatever it takes. You will have a good marriage, live on a farm, raise two kids, and have five grandkids who you adore! You will be lucky to have known your grandparents, who lived to be 100. Your love of history will be ongoing, and your premonitions will fascinate you. Don’t forget to play your musical instruments more, do more paintings depicting your favorite travels, and write that book you’ve always had in you because that fulfills your creative mind. Keep smiling, be grateful, don’t waste precious time, and have a blast!

O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE

Jeannine Truswell United Way of Weld County President & CEO

DEAR YOUNGER ME, Your good moral compass, strong beliefs, an excellent work ethic, leadership skills, and a faith in God and your fellow man will serve you well. The lessons you learn from disappointment, mistakes, miscommunications and even failure will make you better and who you are today. If anything, trust your heart and instincts more because, in the end, they are more often than not correct. If something doesn’t feel right, consider the facts but do not ignore your instincts. You are more emotionally intelligent than you realize. You worry a bit too much, sometimes taking responsibility for things out of your control. Instead of lying in bed worrying, always get up and write down your thoughts. Losing sleep will negatively impact your ability to problem solve in the morning.

You will have positions that challenge you, enable you to grow professionally, and bring meaning and passion to your life. Your hard work, commitment, and leadership will pay off bringing results in making lives better. Remember, life is shorter than we think. Treasure the moments with your parents, husband, son, family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors. Some will pass; others will grow up, move on, move away and lose touch. Be more mindful of how important they are to you and cherish them even more than you already do. Continue to work hard, but not too hard. Take time to care for yourself. Be kind to yourself and give yourself grace. Spend more time in nature; you know it feeds your soul. CONTINUED > MAY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / G R E E L E Y

Rhonda Solis Vice-President, Latino Coalition of Weld County

DEAR YOUNGER ME, Don’t underestimate your impact. Stand in your truth, and know you are loved! Your younger years will be challenging, but your grandparents continue to be your biggest support – so appreciate your time with them. You will be quiet and reserved throughout your school years which will continue into high school at Greeley West. You will question yourself because you don’t feel like you belong, you don’t join any clubs or sports and you don’t really get active in school activities. Though you are smart and get good grades, you will fight hard to stay in your comfort zone. I know you will feel lost, but be patient little caterpillar. You will have mentors that come into your life that help you feel more confident as a woman, and you learn about people that look like you and their incredible contributions to this nation, and YOU stand on their shoulders. You will have the drive to volunteer in your community, serve on boards and commissions, and even run for office. During your two terms on the Greeley/ Evans school board, you and your community will help pass the first MLO, increase graduation rates and pass a $395 million bond. That bond will rebuild Greeley West High School, and a picture of you with your fellow board members will be displayed in that school for the life of the building. It is 2022 and your legacy is still being written. Keep flying, butterfly.

The Dream: Sisters Steph Sipres and Wendy Ramirez began with a dream and a love for flowers – this combination was enough to make their dream a reality. Sipres worked as a designer at a local flower shop and treasured the time spent amongst the beauty and delicacy of the plants. After over 20 years in the business, Sipres was ready to move on and take the next step in her design career. So with Sipres’ eye for design and Ramirez’s love for plants, the sisters decided to open a shop of their own.

The Process: Before Sipres and Ramirez could open their business, finding the perfect location was their top priority. After searching for several months, Sipres’ husband stumbled upon what would become Thyme & Seasons Flower & Gift Market while looking for a location to store his boat. The space had superb potential with large atrium doors bringing in an abundance of light, high ceilings, and an open floor plan. Sipres and Ramirez, along with the help of their family, worked tirelessly to ultimately construct, remodel, and design the space. By February 2022, it was opening day and the sisters were eager to serve Greeley just in time for Valentine’s Day.

The Outcome: The open layout with neutral colors and lots of light makes the shop look large yet welcoming. The variety of plants and flowers create pops of color that bring life throughout the store. The two hope to share their passion for flowers with others by hosting classes this spring and summer on wreath making or centerpiece creations. “I want to spread beauty,” Sipres said. For now, guests can come to visit the female-owned shop for all their plant, flower, and gift needs. Whether you need an arrangement delivered to a loved one or full-scale wedding floral design, we guarantee that Sipres and Ramirez will greet you with a smile.

Supplies: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Pot or vase Wet foam Tape Floral shears

5. 2-3 types of greenery 6. 3-4 types of flowers 7. Succulents or faux succulents

Step One Pick out a vase or pot of your choice. Chop wet foam into approximately 1x1 pieces, fill the pot to the top, and pour a small amount of water onto the foam. This helps beginners hold their stems in place while creating the arrangement.

Step Two Choose several types of greenery for the piece and strip the stems to avoid bacteria growth. Create a substantial greenery base before adding your flowers.

Step Three Choose a theme for the arrangement, such as bright, moody, or pastel. Select larger flowers, measure and cut the stems to fit the pot. Peel away dead petals as you place the flowers throughout.

Step Four Continue to add your assortment of flowers into the piece and turn to avoid blank spaces. Small flowers can be used to fill any negative space and add pops of color. Lastly, succulents can be placed into the piece to add texture.

Working in Two Worlds Mothers are often referred to as the heartbeat of the home. And let’s face it, all moms are working moms. Those who have careers outside their home experience a different set of joys and challenges. The past two years of the COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted the particular challenges women face with careers outside their homes and their full-time roles as mothers. We sat down with six Greeley women who love their roles as mothers and professionals. All are in various fields of work and different stages of parenting. We heard many similar themes in their stories, from figuring out how to balance motherhood and an outside career; to the importance of taking care of themselves, and what they hope to model to their children and give to the community. Learn how these amazing local women are making a difference in their homes and our community. And to working moms everywhere, we salute you!

LOCAL BUSINESS WOMEN SHARE CHALLENGES AND JOYS OF MOTHERHOOD AND CAREER ARTICLE BY KELLY ZEILLMANN PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHEL FRANCIS CREATIVE

Mary Bengford

Mom of 1 son, Realtor at RE/MAX Alliance and Insurance Agent for Aflac WHAT IS A CHALLENGE YOU HAVE FACED AS A WORKING MOM AND HOW HAVE YOU ADDRESSED IT? Working full-time and having a son in elementary school during the pandemic was a huge challenge. Trying to remote teach and work had its challenges, but patience and grace with my son and encouragement from other moms helped me get through it.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING WITH YOUR SON? I love teaching him to cook and play sports and the importance of a strong faith. I love watching him grow up and get to do things I never got to do as a child.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR JOB? I love being a resource for future home buyers and sellers in my hometown. I truly care about business owners and want them to be successful, so offering Aflac supplemental insurance to their employees is very meaningful to me.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WORKING MOMS? Make time for yourself and schedule time for your family.

Kristi Buescher

Mom of 3 boys, Business Development Representative at 1888 Industrial Services WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING A MOM? I love watching my kids’ personalities develop. I can’t wait to see who and what they become.

WHAT IS A CHALLENGE YOU FACE BEING A MOM AND HAVING A CAREER OUTSIDE YOUR HOME? Setting realistic expectations for myself. Learning that I can’t always give 100% to both motherhood and my career.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE DIFFERENCE YOU ARE MAKING IN YOUR COMMUNITY THROUGH YOUR WORK? I am very involved in our 1888 Gives Back program. We support many local organizations, and my boys are often able to join me at these events, which makes them extra special.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE YOUR CHILDREN LEARN FROM WATCHING YOU HAVE A CAREER? I hope they learn that happiness comes from so many different areas of life, including family, a career, and hobbies.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WOULD TELL OTHER WORKING MOMS? Be kind to yourself. It’s ok not to meet society’s standards. Do your best, and know there are millions of moms rooting for you. CONTINUED > MAY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / G R E E L E Y

Sonja Belfiore

Mom of 2 kids, Partner at Sears Real Estate WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT BEING A MOM? Seeing the world through a lens that I lost as I grew up. Getting to revisit the joy and wonder of our amazing world when seeing it for the first time. Finding excitement in the small things, like a game of chase.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO MODEL TO OTHER WOMEN? I hope other moms and all women look at me and see that we can be individuals and professionals while still being a mom. I love all those hats!

WHAT IS ONE CHALLENGE YOU FACE BEING A MOM AND WORKING OUTSIDE YOUR HOME? WHAT HAVE YOU FOUND THAT HELPS? One big challenge is trying to be the best version of myself in my career and at home. Setting boundaries and time limits have really helped. Also, learning to let go of things that only I see or care about, like having an organized office. Maybe I’ll get to that someday!

Betzy Valdez

Mom to 3 girls, Founder of Empowered Leader, owner of BV Virtual Custom Services WHAT DO YOU SEEK TO ACCOMPLISH THROUGH YOUR WORK? Through Empowered Leader, I want to encourage and empower others in our community to be involved, work together, and be committed to their personal growth. Through my volunteer work as president of Hispanic Women of Weld County (HWWC), I help recognize the accomplishments of Latinas across Weld County. It is rewarding and fulfilling work.

WHAT ARE SOME CREATIVE WAYS YOU HAVE COMBINED YOUR ROLES AT WORK AND AT HOME? Anytime I can, I include my girls in activities or projects I am a part of, whether it’s volunteering with HWWC or doing an Empowered Leader workshop. It allows me to spend time with them while they also get to see different things I’m involved in. They feel proud to see mom in action.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WORKING MOMS? You’re doing an amazing job! Please make sure to make time to take care of you–mentally, physically, and emotionally. We can’t possibly take care of others if we don’t take care of ourselves first.

Nicole Watkins

Mom of 2 daughters, Owner of Aliquam Financial Services and Socius Co-working space, Co-owner of The Original Roma Restaurant WHAT BRINGS YOU JOY AS A MOM? I love watching the girls grow into their own people, develop their own interests, and find their passions in life.

HOW DO YOU CREATE BALANCE BETWEEN YOUR WORK AND YOUR FAMILY? The mom guilt was my hardest challenge to get over, and I’m still working on it. But, I have become better at telling clients and friends that my girls will always come first. Work can usually wait a few hours.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO MODEL TO YOUR CHILDREN AS A WORKING MOM? That they can do anything they want. To pursue their own goals and dreams, knowing that if they are dedicated, they will find a way to achieve the life they want.

WHAT ABOUT THE WORK YOU DO MAKES YOU PROUD? Our staff performs good, quality work that business owners can rely on to make good decisions in their businesses. The true difference we make is through the non-profits we are involved in. We try to give our time and money to help the community.

Emilie Casseday Mom of 2 boys, Owner of Blush Boutique Co

WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO OTHER WORKING MOMS? Give yourself lots of grace. At the end of the day, if you are providing for your children and they know they are loved, you are doing great!

HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK AND HOME RESPONSIBILITIES? I don’t truly believe there will ever be a balance. I have just decided when I’m at work, I am at work, and when I’m at home, 100% of my attention is at home. Also, if you can afford it, hire it out. Use other people’s talents and businesses so you can spend more time with your family.

WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR CHILDREN TO LEARN FROM YOU BEING A BUSINESS OWNER? I want them to see that we are contributing to our community as a small business. I think it is so important to show your kids how to support the community they are part of. I want them to know they can go after their dreams, and they don’t have to sacrifice having a family for that dream. You can have both, but give each the attention it deserves at the moment. PUTTING COMMUNITY FIRST 5 STEPS TO FINANCIAL SUCCESS FROM THE BANK THAT IS INVESTED IN COLORADO'S FUTURE AND EVERY GREELEY FAMILY ARTICLE BY BANK OF COLORADO | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHOTOS BY DIANDRA Bank of Colorado answered the call from a community in need and, as one of the oldest banks in Colorado, is known for its stability, service, and values. Despite being farmers by trade, founding brothers George and Tom Dinsdale opened their first family-owned bank in their small Nebraska town 1938 during the Great Depression. In 1978, the Dinsdales expanded their community banks into Colorado. As a family-owned business for nearly 80 years, honesty, integrity, and clarity still guide their every decision. Though banking has changed a lot over the years, Bank of Colorado is still cut from the same cloth as its founders and fully invested in Colorado’s future and every Colorado family. The bank’s

crafted services reflect the community’s unique needs, with the tools and conveniences to help clients reach their financial goals. Surveys have found that eighty percent of women are in charge of managing their family or household finances. As Greeley’s community bank, Bank of Colorado knows that women face important financial decisions every day and wants to equip all Greeley women with the critical knowledge to make the best financial decisions for themselves, their families, and their futures. There is only one Colorado, there is only one you, and one bank dedicated to both. In accordance with Bank of Colorado’s community values, they’ve laid out five steps to set up all Greeley families for success.

SET YOUR CALENDAR FOR GOOD FINANCIAL HEALTH Check your credit report regularly. Experts recommend that you review your credit report at least once a year. A person who proves financial health is careful about managing their debt so that the information on their credit report yields a strong credit score.

MA STER YOUR MONEY WITH THE 50-30-20 METHOD While there are many tactics you can use to figure out how much you should be spending monthly, one straightforward way to evaluate your spending is the 50-30-20 rule. This method recommends spending 50% of income on needs, 30% on wants, and 20% on savings or debts.

DO A COST-OF-LIVING CLEAN-UP Review your monthly statements and regularly cut those long-forgotten memberships and subscriptions that no longer serve you or your financial goals.

CONSIDER SUSTAINABLE INVESTING SOLUTIONS Sustainable investing combines the traditional investment goal of making money to have an impact on a cause that is aligned with your values. Deciding whether to create a sustainable investment means balancing the likelihood of long-term financial gain with the likelihood that your investment will support a positive impact on the environment, society, or the world.

SAVE WITH THE F.I.R.E LIFEST YLE Look into the F.I.R.E. Lifestyle. F.I.R.E (Financial Independence and Retire Early) is a long-term lifestyle goal that requires immediate modification of your short-term financial behaviors, which can accelerate debt payoff and increase saving. This new level of eagerness and awareness of lifestyle choices can accelerate debt payoff and increase savings. MAY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / G R E E L E Y

A PASSION FOR YOUR PETS Teri Segelke, J&T Feeds Owner

Colorado native Teri Segelke grew up loving all kinds of animals. As an adult, she turned that passion into a thriving Greeley business that helps countless people enjoy their own animals. Segelke decided to open J & T Feeds in 2002 after losing her management job to downsizing. The first years were challenging, and she made many mistakes. Her dad was her biggest cheerleader during those years. “My Dad was my mentor and knew I could be successful.” J & T Feeds carries food for pets of all shapes and sizes, including dogs, cats, rabbits, goats, chickens, and horses. They also take special orders if customers can’t find exactly what they need on the shelves. Segelke and her team are committed to staying up to date on current trends and new products. They all share a passion for continuing education and excellent customer service. Building relationships with customers is a foundational value for the business. Owning a business is never without setbacks, and on Valentine’s Day 2014, Segelke experienced an unimaginable one when a fire caused significant damage to her store. “It was the most traumatic day of my life,” she shared. Her loyal customers immediately sprang into action, setting up a GoFundMe page and dropping by with supplies and money. A few days after the fire, her husband asked if she planned to close the store. The answer was an emphatic no! “My customers depend on me. The dog that scratches all night because he has sensitivity issues. The cat who won’t eat. Helping solve those problems so people can enjoy their pets is what keeps me going.” Segelke sees a silver lining to that traumatic day. “The fire prompted me to move the business to where it is now, and it is a much better location. If I hadn’t moved, I would not be nearly

as successful as I am now.” A few indicators of her success include being named a Colorado Women of Influence in 2015, Outstanding Woman Of Weld County in 2016, Best Pet Food Store in Greeley multiple times, and Best Customer Service in Greeley in 2021. “I believe in what I’m doing. My team cares about your pets. We want to help people get the maximum enjoyment from their pets,” Segelke shared. This spirit makes J & T Feeds a treasured part of our Greeley community.

GET IN THE GAME MATTI SPERRY & JAMIE KNOPH SHARE THEIR TENNIS AND PICKLEBALL ORIGIN STORIES AND TIPS ON HOW TO GET IN THE GAME AT THE GREELEY COUNTRY CLUB 40

G E T AC T IV E | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON

When you think of something so satisfying that you can’t help but smile, what is the first thing that comes to mind? For Matti Sperry, Head Tennis Pro at the Greeley Country Club (GCC), perfection is “a really good forehand.” Over the last year, the GCC has worked tirelessly renovating its state-of-the-art amenities for members to enjoy. From their world-class golf course and indoor golf simulators to their pristine tennis and pickleball courts, GCC members love all that the club has to offer. Sperry says, “The [tennis] facility is beautiful. It’s somewhere you can go to escape the noise and just work on your game.” With five outdoor tennis courts and two pickleball courts, Jamie Knoph, competitive pickleball player, and Matti Sperry are two women who take full advantage of the facilities at the GCC and want to help you get in the game.

WHAT IS YOUR TENNIS ORIGIN STORY? I started playing tennis at 5. I played 10-15 tournaments a year until high school, and I was ranked in the top 10 for most of those years. After high school, I had various opportunities to continue playing in college but turned them all down due to my partially torn rotator cuff. I got a coaching job at the Harvest House, and my boss/mentor pushed me to continue my career. It was one of the first times I had been coached at that level, and it brought back my love for the game. I tried out for the CU women’s team and made it. I went on to have a winning record for two years at CU Boulder in the PAC 12 division.

Matti Sperry, Head Tennis Pro, GCC

MAT TI SPERRY & JAMIE KNOPH

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE GCC? Having grown up in the area, I wanted to help get tennis going in Greeley again. Tennis was huge in the 90s/early 2000s, but it’s kind of fallen by the wayside since. I became Head Tennis Pro at the end of the summer last year. I like that the club has a clean slate for tennis and pickleball. There hasn’t been much movement on these courts in a long time, so seeing the energy come back last fall was awesome. I hope it’ll continue this summer! WHY SHOULD PEOPLE PLAY TENNIS? Tennis is a sport that anyone can play forever. It challenges you physically and mentally on and off the court. It changes with you in all walks of life! WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN GETTING STARTED? Just start! Sign up for a class or a private lesson. There are many great tennis coaches in this area, but if you are a member of the Greeley Country Club, I would love to hit with you and help you reach your goals!

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED PLAYING PICKLEBALL? While playing league tennis in 2011, one of our teammates left our team to play pickleball. “Pickleball? What is that?” I thought. She started telling me how much fun it was and that I should come try it out. The Greeley Rec Center was teaching pickleball in the auxiliary gym to new players, so I went to try it out. I stepped on the court that day and haven’t stopped playing since. It was the most fun sport I have experienced that was so easily learned. I had no idea how much it would change my life. Jamie Knoph, competitive pickleball player

WHAT MAKES PICKLEBALL UNIQUE? Pickleball is unique in that it can be very competitive depending on what level of play is on the court, but it is much more than winning or losing games – it is about sportsmanship, friendships, and laughter. This sport crosses generations. Kids can play with adults. Grandkids can play with their grandparents. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. The equipment is fairly simple; all you need is a paddle, a pair of tennis shoes, and a court. WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN GETTING STARTED? If you’re interested in playing pickleball, reach out to a current player. Pickleball is easily taught – friends can teach friends, or you can turn to a professional instructor for advanced instruction. I love that the GCC now has incorporated pickleball courts. I have brought many friends to play here and what is great is that we can head up to the clubhouse for lunch and refreshments after.

CARING FOR MOM We all love our parents, and as they get older, no one knows how to care for them better than their family. However, it can be hard to know where to start when it’s time to get them the assistance they need beyond what family can provide. The Bridge at Greeley offers the finest in assisted living for seniors looking to enjoy their retirement thoroughly and for families seeking to ensure the safety and health of their loved ones. Caring associates and staff strive to enhance each resident’s well-being with a wide range of services and amenities, all while encouraging residents to live as independently as possible. So when it’s time to care for mom, here are five steps to keep in mind from The Bridge at Greeley:

PLAN AHEAD

ARTICLE BY THE BRIDGE AT GREELEY | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Having a plan will significantly reduce stress for everyone involved. Talk about what mom wants when she needs more assistance than she can get from family, finances, and long-term care insurance. Ensure that all decision-makers are aware of the plan.

44

02

R E CO G N I Z E W H E N TH E TI M E H A S CO M E

Things to watch for: falls, memory issues, social isolation, or decreased physical ability. When mom can no longer prepare nutritious meals, or keep up the household, it may be time to get some assistance.

03

EXPLORE OPTIONS

Assisted living should be considered if mom needs any or all of the following: 24hr oversight, medication administration, socialization, nutritious meals, housekeeping, or transportation to medical appointments. Talk to your local professionals to know which facilities best suit her needs.

FAM ILY CA R E | LOCAL SERVI CE S

04

GET YOUR DUCKS IN A ROW

Getting paperwork in line is never fun, but you will thank yourself later for having things like medical and financial POAs appointed, a living will in place, knowledge of, and copies of all insurance, Medicare, and vaccine cards.

05

IMPLE ME NT YO U R P L A N

Don’t wait until it’s too late to get mom the assistance she needs. If she moves to a community, get her on a waiting list to make the transition smooth. Any Assisted Living community will require Doctor’s Orders, assessment from community care staff, and first month’s rent.
