As we enter the month of April, we approach a season of new beginnings. Nature reveals its beauty through budding trees and flowers, and the fresh temperate air invites us to spend more time outdoors. As we prepare our gardens and flowerbeds, new life awakens joy in the beauty of our world and the desire to explore it. And for those of us without a green thumb, the local farmer’s markets are gearing up for a busy season of visitors to enjoy fresh produce from local farmers. There is a multitude of diverse spots around town to discover, whether it’s a river to fish, a trail to hike, or live music to enjoy - there is something for everyone. For our April issue, we wanted to share with you how some of our neighbors are getting out to explore all the great things that our town has to offer in the springtime. Delia Haefeli shares how to find peace in the outdoors through the art of fly fishing. Fisher Landscaping gives step-by-step tips on building your own garden box at home. Woodland Home Company masters the art of renovation, and more. We would love to hear from you about your favorite spots in town and your go-to destinations for hiking, fishing, or camping in the springtime, so drop us a line or share it with us on Facebook or Instagram. We hope that the many ways to explore Greeley and surrounding areas featured this month give you something to dream about visiting in the near future. Here is to a happy spring full of adventure, peace, and sunshine.

Let it Fly THE ART OF FLY FISHING UNCOVERED BY DELIA HAEFELI

Whether it be the sound of the river flowing in the stream, or the sites of open fields full of lush green grass or snow-covered mountains, we’ve all experienced the magical, stress lifting powers of nature. Its ability to help us unwind, unplug, and disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the world is why many view nature as the ultimate source of peace. Fly fishing, what some refer to as a type of meditation in itself, is one way that Delia Haefeli absorbs the magic that is the great outdoors.

“Fly fishing is an art. You have to be patient and let the fly rod do the work for you. The back and front end rhythm as the line loads and unloads is an art of patience, not speed.”

Fly fishing is a simple, repeated motion that, at first glance, seems effortless. “I find fly fishing very therapeutic. There is an art to the cast,” Haefeli notes. “You have to learn how to let the rod do the work for you. It’s about patience and letting go.” However, the effortless motion that one might see in a seasoned fly fisher takes years to master. “After 38 years, I’m still learning. I am still taking courses to get better and learn more. There is always something new to learn.” Growing up on a ranch in Kremmling, Colorado, Haefeli remembers spending all of her time outdoors and says, “I have always been close to the outdoors.” It wasn’t until attending college at Gunnison State that she took a fly tying class, picked up her first fly rod, and began learning the art of fly fishing. Over three decades later, fly fishing has become a significant part of Haefeli’s life and her primary way to connect with nature – her ultimate source of peace. Haefeli and her husband, John, now travel all over the U.S. and the world, fishing in new rivers and meeting other fly fishing enthusiasts. Haefeli is passionate about helping others uncover the peace of the outdoors and the art of fly fishing. She says, “You just have to get out there and give it a try.” Two key things stopping many of us from simply “getting out there and giving it a try” are the lack of knowledge regarding supplies and knowing which rivers to fish. To help bridge this gap, Haefeli has provided a list of 10 supplies to bring when fly fishing, all of which you can find at a local sporting goods store, and five different river locations to help all Greeley residents get started.

5 spots for fly fishing in and around Greeley The Poudre River – Northern Colorado Distance: 5-30 minutes, depending on location on the Poudre Benefits: “I really can’t think of many spots on the Poudre where if you pulled over and went down to the river you couldn’t fish!” Haefeli says.

The Big Thompson – Estes Park, Colorado Distance: Approximately 1 hour Benefits: “Nearly every section of the river is productive! You can expect to catch rainbow trout, brook trout, brown trout, or Greenback Cutthroat trout” (Hiking and Fishing).

The Arkansas – Between Leadville and Buena Vista, Colorado Distance: Approximately 3 hours Benefits: “The Upper Arkansas is an easy wade. With the exception of runoff, the upper stretches of the river are relatively small and can be easily crossed” (Cutthroat Anglers).

The Yampa River – Steamboat, Colorado Distance: Approximately 4 hours Benefits: “The Yampa Valley is a premier fly fishing destination offering some of the best private and public access waters in the west” (Mountain Resorts).

Grey Reef – Casper, Wyoming Distance: Approximately 4 hours Benefits: “You can enjoy fly fishing by either wading or floating. There are several access points for wading - the section directly below the dam can get a bit crowded at times, and can be demanding if releases are high” (Wyoming Fishing). Exploration & Innovation

Dr. Joseph Thompson explores technological innovation in dentistry to improve the patient experience ARTICLE BY BY BETHANY WILEY, MPH, RYT PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIARA ROSE PHOTOGRAPHY

26

LOCA L’S CH OICE | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S

Since Dr. Joseph Thompson acquired his dental practice in 2005, much has changed – in his personal life, professional life, and for his dental practice, Thompson Advanced Dentistry. I sat down with Dr. Thompson to discover how he explores change and the unexpected, and how his positive attitude impacts all aspects of his life. TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO COLORADO? I grew up in Nebraska and I’m still a Cornhusker fan, of course! My wife, Kathleen, and I moved to Greeley in 2004 after graduating from the University of Nebraska. A short while later, we started having kids and now we have four daughters – ages 12, 9, 7, and 3. The lifestyle brought us to Colorado! We love skiing and outdoor activities. HOW DO YOU ENCOURAGE YOUR KIDS TO BE ACTIVE? I’ve always been active, but now it’s about the girls – we’re always skiing, and running around to soccer, gymnastics, and basketball. I introduced skiing to my oldest. She competed for five years in Big Mountain, a regional skiing competition. We used to ski about 40 days a year, but now we focus more on local activities. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT GREELEY? Even though Greeley has changed a lot since we moved here, it still feels small enough to run into people when we’re out. It has that community feel that we want our kids to grow up in. WHAT WAS THE TRANSITION LIKE ACQUIRING A DENTAL PRACTICE IN 2005 AND BUILDING A NEW OFFICE? There were challenges. I started practicing at age 25 and patients told me I looked like I was 12. The biggest challenge was gaining people’s trust, but we were able to do that overtime. I had a great staff that helped me with the transition. We built the new office in 2013, which expanded our square footage and allowed for technology changes, upgrades, and equipment.

WHAT MAKES YOUR PRACTICE STAND OUT? We’re not trying to be the biggest office in town; our focus is relationships. We also stand out with what we offer. We do our own implant surgeries and cosmetic work. We shine in the big cases, where many dentists might refer out. We can work with patients to restore and give them their dream smile. HOW DO YOU STAY CURRENT WITH TECHNOLOGY TRENDS AND ADVANCEMENTS IN DENTISTRY? When I first graduated from dental school, I took continuing education nonstop, which was before I had kids. I was taking at least 100 hours a year, so I have a solid core knowledge. Now I can just focus on learning new technology. I like to stay up on the latest trends and how technology affects implant and cosmetic dentistry. If there’s something out there that is going to make us better, I’m all over it! HOW DOES EMBRACING TECHNOLOGY IMPROVE THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE? The biggest thing is having the predictability to know what you’re getting into before surgery. For implants, I do a CT scan, a digital scan, and then we merge those into an implant planning software. We virtually place the implant before we even consider doing the surgery. It’s planning before actually doing the surgery, so it’s the perfect fit. It makes an implant surgery simple, less invasive, and a lot of times, there’s no postoperative pain. Dr. Thompson appreciates having a good team beside him. They are an example of what it’s like to have fun at work and he believes that spills over into the patients, making them feel at home and comfortable. With a focus on family, community, and serving the needs of his patients, Dr. Thompson and his team continually explore innovative technologies to improve patient care.

homegrown hospitality

Tyler Fisher, of Fisher Landscaping, walks through the process of building your own garden box at home in 8 simple steps

ARTICLE BY CAITLYN OLSON

28

H OW TO | HOM E + D ESIGN

Step One Timely Manner What do longer days, warmer weather, greener lawns, chirping birds, and blooming flowers all have in common? Spring has officially arrived! Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or brand new to the game, there is no better time to start your home garden and bring a little homegrown hospitality to your residence! Tyler Fisher, owner of Fisher Landscaping, is here to help us create a thriving home garden box in just eight simple steps.

Sense of Place “Location is a huge part in creating a successful garden area,” Fischer emphasizes. Before following our steps below to create your own garden box at home, scout your yard for the best location for your garden’s optimal growth. “Sun exposure and, if possible, a protected area always create a bit more ease when having a garden.” Most plants thrive with at least eight hours of sunlight. Also, keep in mind our furry friends and mother nature! “Protection from the natural elements like wind and also from small animals like rabbits, squirrels, and even our own pets makes gardening much easier.”

Choose your location. Pick a flat, sunny spot in your yard to build your garden box.

Step Two Decide your size & height. “Consider the amount of time you want to garden and the number of items you want to fit.” For height, “A minimum of 18" in. and a maximum of 3 ft. in height makes it easier on our backs and creates ease when managing your plants.”

Step Three Pick & Assemble your frame. “Timber or wood style boxes do a great job for a short period of time. Retaining wall frames give a much more permanent structure and hold up much better to our Colorado element throughout the seasons.”

Step Four Add soil. Line the floor of your garden box with landscape fabric and “make sure that you have a nice garden mix topsoil that will have the proper nutrients for your plants.”

Step Five Water! “Water is key for any garden to have success.” You can use either drip emitters, micro sprays, or spigots for irrigation.

Step Six Benef its of the trade There are so many reasons why building a garden box is the best way to bring life, produce, and beauty to your yard this spring. “Garden boxes are a great way to create some family fun and a great way to bring food from the garden to table at your own home,” Fischer notes. Not to mention, building and cultivating your own garden box has three tangible benefits: less mess in your yard, a smaller amount of weeds in your garden, and fewer trips to the store for fresh produce!

Set up a drainage system. Around the perimeter and inside the garden, use an aggregate base of 3-6", then a geotextile fabric on the aggregate, followed by the garden mix topsoil. This will allow water to percolate through the soil, so you don’t drown your plant!

Step Seven Choose & Plant your seeds! What you grow in your garden depends on your appetite. Just be sure that the produce you’re planting is in season to ensure a thriving garden and plant your seeds far enough apart for proper room to grow.

Step Eight Watch it grow. Be sure to check that your plants are receiving proper water, sunlight, and nutrients as they grow and weed your garden regularly. CONTINUED > AP R I L 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / G R E E L E Y

1888 INDUSTRIAL SERVICES STRIVES TO LEAVE GREELEY BETTER OFF THAN THEY FOUND IT

32

1888 Gives Back

Community outreach may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the term “industrial services.” However, 1888 Industrial Services strives to leave Greeley a better place than they found it. The company was founded in 2008 right here in Greeley and has quickly become a leading company across the country for construction, transportation, and maintenance services in the industrial sector. “The question is what don’t we do,” said Keith Martin, Senior Vice President of Operations. Over the past decade, 1888 has grown from a staff of six to more than 400. 1888 works to bring people together by creating a team of hardworking individuals who love their community. While the company’s footprint spans nationwide, their headquarters remain right here in Greeley – along with their passion for their community. Giving back is in the bones of who 1888 Industrial Services is as an organization. 1888 Gives Back, a community-focused program created by the company, provides funds and services to local organizations, creates opportunities for staff members to connect with their communities by providing services that “give back” in impactful ways. 1888 believes in creating community growth through active engagement and service. “It’s a big city with a small-town feel,” said Martin. Greeley’s small-town feel allows the company to build positive relationships with those in the community and impact many people through their acts of service.

The company shows its love for the Greeley community by giving back to organizations such as Toys for Tots, the NCMC Burn Center Unit, and the Salvation Army Angel Tree. The outreach program works year-round to give back and create lasting relationships throughout the community. Food often seems to be one thing that brings people together, and 1888 uses this fact as a way to connect with local schools to help raise funds for scholarships, booster clubs, or after-school activities. Last year, 1888 employees spent the day serving at a community-wide BBQ to raise funds for a local school’s football team. The company donated food and drinks for the fundraiser, and all of the money raised went directly back to the team. 1888 also held an event to raise money for Windsor’s after-prom by donating and serving hotdogs and hamburgers to hungry students and parents at the Windsor High School Senior Night Football Game. The company’s service doesn’t end there, 1888 Gives Back also seeks to give back to those who protect and serve our communities. 1888’s cook team served lunch to Severance Police, Windsor Severance Fire Rescue and Severance city workers to show appreciation for their services. So the next time you see 1888 Industrial Services, hopefully, more than just electrical, mechanical, and transportation services come to mind. Instead, 1888 hopes that you’ll think of a dedicated, community-focused organization that strives to make our home a better place to live, work, and play.

Fixer Upper

WOODLAND HOME COMPANY SHOWS SOME TLC TO A RUSTIC 1980’S HOME

Ryan and Sarah Woodland of Woodland Home Company stumbled on this 1980 fixer-upper by sheer coincidence. They happened to notice an FSBO (for sale by owner) sign and decided to make the call. The space needed serious TLC, yet the 1.26-acre lot and prime Greeley location captured their attention. The Woodland team renovated virtually every inch of the home while maintaining original elements that make it unique. They added windows and doors to the living room to remedy the lack of natural light. They removed the drop ceiling to unveil a stunning vault with a structural beam and added a fireplace with a reclaimed mantle circa the early 1900s. A new owner’s suite, custom kitchen, and complete bathroom revamps are other notable highlights. Thoughtful touches are a Woodland signature; this home has them in spades. Impact walls are found throughout, while historical pieces from the company’s reclaimed lumber yard add rustic warmth to the modern aesthetic.

B B B ’ S T O R C H AWA R D S FOR ETHICS ARTICLE BY BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

UNC Students Excelling in the 4Cs: Character, Culture, Customers, Community

Founded more than 100 years ago, the Better Business Bureau (BBB), serving Northern Colorado and Wyoming, helps people find and recommend businesses, brands, and charities they can trust. BBB embraces ethics every day by encouraging businesses and nonprofits to build a foundation of trust within their organization. For the past 24 years, BBB has taken the month of April to elevate the celebration of trust and integrity in the marketplace by honoring organizations in Northern Colorado and Wyoming with the prestigious BBB Torch Award for Ethics. This year’s event will take place on April 28th at the Embassy Suites Loveland. Six students from Colorado State University, University of Northern Colorado, and the University of Wyoming were selected as Ethics Scholar Interns to work with this year’s nominated businesses and nonprofits. Each intern researched their assigned organization, conducted interviews with leadership, and reviewed documentation to form a complete picture of how well the organization met the Torch Award criteria. The criteria are based on how an organization excels in Character, Culture, Customers and Community and centers around four key themes: How does the organization’s leadership set an ethical tone? How does it work toward a culture of trust with employees? How does it build ethical relationships with customers and clients? And how does it support the community?

“BBB’s collaboration with the universities has been a key component of the Torch Awards since the program’s inception in 1999. This partnership has given our Ethics Scholar interns an out-of-the-classroom opportunity to learn about ethics directly from business and nonprofit leaders. It also gives leadership a chance to speak with students about ethics and how to run an organization the right way,” said Shelley Polansky, president/CEO of BBB, serving Northern Colorado and Wyoming. Ethics Scholars presented their findings via a written paper and verbal presentation in front of an independent panel of judges who determined this year’s business and nonprofit winners. Participation in the award process allows the finalists and winners to take a step back and evaluate their organizational culture. Many times they even learn about areas where they can improve. Being recognized from an outside source, boosts their credibility and enhances their reputations as honest and ethical organizations, while also advancing marketplace trust. “It gives winners the opportunity to really tell their story about how an ethical organization behaves and what really makes them stand out in the marketplace,” Polansky said.
