Home. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love and a shelter from the outside world -- a place where you can let you guard down and just be. Our home issue is dedicated to making you feel at home, whether that be in the four walls of your own home or the greater Greeley community. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what lasts regardless if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. And the love that is shared among friends, neighbors, and families in Greeley is one of the things that makes our community a wonderful place to call home. In this year’s Home issue, we take a peek inside Emilie Cassedy's home that shares beautiful and intentional designs that I hope will leave you inspired. We highlight the arbiter of home itself, Ty Gentry, as he shares some of his expert tips on creating the home of your dreams. We also share some incredible stories of people that have come from all over the world to make Greeley their home, from Africa, to Thailand, to Malaysia. We are honored to share their stories. From our home to yours, we wish you love, peace and happiness. Sincerely,

Beautifully Home Navigating Intentional Design with Emilie Cassedy ARTICLE BY MATILDA PREISENDORF | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TARYN ASHLEE PHOTOGRAPHY

For the past nine years, Emile Cassedy has been creating her dream home. As a former photographer, her eye for detail goes past the camera lens. Every nook in her home has a memory attached to it, and she enjoys highlighting pieces that carry a special meaning. “Our homes are an expression of who we are,” Cassedy said. The home’s beautiful interior welcomes loved ones into a space that looks fresh out of a magazine, but is home to a family that has left an imprint on every

square inch. The family’s passions are evident in the house, with bookshelves scattered throughout and music playing in every room. “I feel like it’s modern traditionalism with some fun,” Cassedy laughed. “I wanted it to be pretty, but I wanted it to feel like home.” Cassedy explains that her theme has not always stayed the same and that as time goes on she finds ways to add to the space in a way that adapts with her family. “The biggest thing is, don’t be afraid to try new things,” Cassedy said.

The Living Room: The contrast of black and white to the olive-green accessories showcase her favorite color and make the details of her living room stand out, juxtaposed by the corner of toys that have been well-loved by her two boys. Frames scatter the walls with photographs and a blessing from her mother, given to her and her husband, Andy, when they moved into their first home and have traveled with them into every new house. The room is evidently loved by the family, with cozy blankets and a large couch that is home to movie nights and fort building. The Dining Room: From the dining table made by a friend to the dried flowers from a wedding she photographed, the Cassedy’s dining room is a space full of pieces from friends and family. She connects to loved ones by preserving items and memories that create a gathering space. Her husband comes from a long line of carpenters, and she preserves those memories and tradition with one of her favorite pieces, a vintage saw that lies on the cabinets. The Kitchen: The kitchen is a space that truly shows off her family. Pictures of her sons hang on the fridge, and crystal pieces from her grandmother are lit up in the cabinets. Families often have the best conversations with food, and this family is no exception. Cassedy talks about her love for cooking, and it shows through the variety of cookbooks that decorate the countertops. As she climbs onto the island for a photograph, she laughs about how it is the same spot her kids sit to put their shoes on in the morning. The Kids’ Rooms: When designing her sons’ rooms, Cassedy wanted them to have a theme, and as the boys have gotten older, she has incorporated their personalities into each room. Jack (2) and Noah (5) have their own personal touches on their rooms, but their brotherly connection keeps them tied together through the family’s love of Disney. Each has a collection of pins from Disney that are memories of the times spent together. Noah’s love for Star Wars and Legos is clear with his collections and memorabilia. But the small skeleton Halloween decoration is his most prized possession. “He’s even asked if he can sleep with it,” laughed Cassedy. Jack’s room has a Colorado theme with adventure posters and maps. His adventurous personality fits in with the space, and Cassedy hopes his love for adventure grows with his age. The Master Bedroom: The master bedroom is simple but filled with the couple’s memories of loved ones and cherished photographs. Cassedy has decorated the space with pictures that previously resided in her grandmother’s parlor and vintage prints given by a friend. The space has an artistic edge and the personal touches that make the room feel comfortable and relaxing. With a little bit of time and a lot of intention, the Cassedy home has become one of their dreams. Encapsulating the expression of who they are, the things they love, and the memories they treasure.

Whether arriving on their own or alongside a loving family, these Greeley locals have discovered a sense of home right here in our community. Having been born in Africa and raised in Greeley, what does one UNC basketball star from Kenya and five children adopted from Ethiopia all have in common? A heritage that brings a new and beautiful dimension to the makeup of our town as a home to those from near and far. Kur Jongkuch has found a home on the University of Northern Colorado’s (UNC) Men’s Basketball team and serves as an inspiration for many of Greeley’s youth – especially those with similar roots. “They are amazing kids who have shown tremendous resiliency as they navigated life in a new country and family.”

Kur was born in Nairobi and lived with his family in Kenya’s Kakuma refugee camp until he was three years old. While in Kakuma, his family had an opportunity to move to London, Ontario, Canada, where Kur was raised. After receiving a scholarship, Kur moved to Greeley in 2018 to attend UNC and play on their basketball team. When Kur visited Greeley, he knew it was where he wanted to be. “When I came here, the people were so welcoming and friendly,” Kur explains. Greeley feels like home to Kur, and the UNC team feels like family. “I love the brotherhood and friendship of basketball. I’ve made lifelong friends,” he said. But it’s more than Kur’s inspiring journey to the United States and his basketball accomplishments that make him a role model for other Greeley youth. Kur is majoring in Economics and someday hopes to work in government, maybe for the Department of Defense. After he graduates from UNC this spring, he would like to either stay in the U.S. or move back to Kenya or Sudan to improve life back home.

Kur’s intentional drive for success and settling in Greeley sets a prime example for others. Abuzaid, Kalid, and Temesgen Fanning, Jakobe Cole, and Malakai Morris are five boys adopted from Ethiopia who can turn to role models like Kur for inspiration– athletically, academically, and personally. The Fannings, the Coles, and the Morris’ have all experienced the blessings that come when you open your heart and your home, having adopted a combined five children from Ethiopia. Amy and Shane Fanning’s biological boys, Jonah and Landon, were 5 and 7 years old when they accompanied their parents on one of the trips to Ethiopia. “They were excited to meet their new brothers,” Amy recalls. They also saw firsthand the orphanage and the country where their three brothers, Abuzaid, Kalid, and Temesgen, grew up. “We’ve spent many years playing sports with all five boys on the same team and bonding,” said Amy. “They are amazing kids who have shown tremendous resiliency as they navigated life in a new country and family.” The Fanning CONTINUED >

We can find injera (an Ethiopian staple) at a little East African market in town. There are people from all over the world here - it’s a gift,” said Amy. Broke and Nate Cole feel like they received a tremendous gift in adopting their son, Jakobe. They remember walking through the villages in Ethiopia while carrying their newly adopted son, and the locals would shout out to them, “lucky baby, lucky baby,” but the Coles felt like they were the lucky ones. “It’s by far one of the best yes-es in our life,” said Brooke. “I look at Jakobe and think I would have missed this if I wouldn’t have said yes.” Brooke says that Jakobe has taught her what “God’s love looks like and how to love well and follow your heart.” The Cole’s feel blessed to live in Greeley, where Jakobe can connect with other kids just like him. “We get together with other families with Ethiopian children and celebrate Ethiopian New Year, eat

Christy and Dustin Morris adopted their three youngest children from three different countries: Korea, China, and Ethiopia. “We all know we look different and have different cultural heritages. We recognize and celebrate each of our differences and acknowledge that they are valuable and good.” Their son Malakai is from Ethiopia and loves having other Ethiopian classmates at Dayspring Christian Academy. Christy said it is their greatest hope that, “Even though our children have experienced immense heartache and loss that they would be able to find hope, joy, community, and a future by being in a loving family and having a strong network of people to surround and support them.” Kur Jongkuch, Abuzaid, Kalid, and Temesgen Fanning, Jakobe Cole, and Malakai Morris are just a few Greeley locals born in Africa and now call Greeley home. Though for them, it’s the people that make Greeley feel like home. They are overjoyed to have families that love them, friends from near and far, and people like Kur to look up to as a role model.

HELPING BRING YOUR DREAMS TO LIFE, TURNING YOUR HOUSE INTO A HOME

When you think of feeling right at home, what comes to mind? A specific person, place, or thing? For Ty Gentry, owner of West Point Carpet One Floor & Home (West Point), the feeling of home is one he is well acquainted with. And when Ty thinks of feeling right at home, his family, his hometown, and his multigenerational family business come to mind. Ty’s father, Rocky Gentry, founder of West Point Interiors, discovered his passion for selling carpet and installing flooring shortly after graduating from the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) with his teaching degree. After a few years working as a teacher and installing carpet in the summers, Rocky worked his way into the industry and purchased the business in 1998. Little did he know, his knack for installation would become a family tradition that would root him and his family in Greeley for generations to come.

The Arbiters of Home Itself

Following in his father’s footsteps, Ty graduated from UNC with his teaching degree in 2004. Though his love for his family’s business was well established, having installed carpet every summer since he was 16. Shortly after graduating, Ty began working alongside his father, and by 2006, was #1 in sales. “I really enjoyed it, to say the least,” Ty explains. Little did he know, his knack for design would, over the years, help turn hundreds of Greeley’s houses into homes. Though West Point Carpet specializes in carpet, hardwood, tile, walls, countertops, and backsplashes, it is Ty’s relationship with his clients that truly helps bring their home to life. “We are people driven; we do this for them.” The Gentrys are the best in their business because they know what it means to feel at home. Ty says, “Greeley is in my blood.” Helping bring your dreams to life, turning your house into a home, is what Rocky and Ty Gentry have been doing at West Point Carpet One Floor & Home since 1998. There is no better name to trust to design your home than the arbiters of home itself. Beyond a deeply rooted feeling of home and community, Ty has a natural eye for design. With over 18 years in the business, Ty has spent his career learning popular trends, color blends, and a variety of materials. To help turn your house into a home, here are five design tips from Ty himself: 1. A TOUCH OF NATURE. Tie in fashionable gray tones with a hint of natural color using Blonde Oaks and Clear Maples for cabinets and open shelving. 2. LESS IS MORE. When doing tile work, go for a simple design with larger format tiles and rectangle tiles set in a fashionable way. 3. WATERPROOF FLOORING. Consider Waterproof Laminate instead of real hardwood to help with rigidity and transitions to other flooring like tile. 4. CARPET FIBER FACE OFF. PTT Polyester vs. Nylon is an ongoing battle, but you can’t go wrong with either. Poly has a better price point with fantastic stain blocking capabilities and vivid colors. Nylon’s have a rigid composition that maintains beautifully over time. 5. IS GRAY STILL IN? Yes! Though look for the sandy blonde colors. We’ve seen many shades of grays over the years, and the warmer tones are starting to make a dramatic entrance. MAR CH 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / G R E E L E Y

A New Home Greeley is home to people from all over the world. From Burmese to Portuguese to Vietnamese, the Immigrant Refugee of Northern Colorado (IRCNOCO) serves a clientele that speaks a total of 24 languages from dozens of countries around the globe. Lisa Taylor, Executive Director for IRCNOCO, states, “Their [immigrants and refugees] kids go to school here, they buy homes here, and they work here. They are extremely invested in making this place home.” IRCNOCO helps immigrants and refugees from all over the world to build their homes right here in Greeley. Offering English and Citizenship classes, a community navigation team, advocacy, tutoring, food distribution, health fairs, and more, IRCNOCO is a vital resource for immigrants and refugees in helping their transition into our community. “What we know is that there is a great return on investment with immigrants and refugees,” Taylor explains. “They want for their children exactly what we want for our children.” Beyond this, Taylor notes, “There is an inherent value of having a diverse populace that brings perspectives and open up new worlds and new ways of thinking that really enrich our community in a number of ways.” Though IRCNOCO hosts a diverse clientele all seeking a better life in the United States, Minah Minsari, Salma Ali, and Sa Paw are three immigrants and refugees who’ve moved to our community looking to make Greeley their new home.

Minah Minsari,

Malaysia, Southeast Asia

Minah Minsarai moved to Greeley from Malaysia, South East Asia, in 2016. Nearly 9,000 miles from her home, Minsari has built her life in Greeley in hopes of creating a life of health, prosperity, and success for her and her five children. “Northern Colorado is such a peaceful place to live. There are so many opportunities for us here,” she says. Though, Minsarai and her family are still in the process of making this place home. The language barrier makes it difficult to get out in the community. Luckily, Minsari and her family have IRCNOCO to help tackle these hurdles. Minsari and her husband attend English classes at IRCNOCO and utilize their community navigator team to help translate mail to their native language. “In my country, there was not much available to us. We have more freedom now than ever before. We can drive a car or ride a bike without fear. We’ve even made friends and feel connected to the community.” She continues, “That is what makes it feel like home for us.”

Salma Ali,

Sudan, Northern Africa Born in Sudan, Northeastern Africa, Salma Ali moved to the United States in hopes of “a better life” for her family and “the best education” for her children. While still living in Sudan, Ali earned her master’s degree and worked as a high school teacher. She knew the value of a good education and desired the same for her three children. Though knowing no English before moving to the United States, Ali has made it a priority to learn English and work hard to make a living for her family working at JBS. While making a living, Ali and her family have made a life for themselves in the Greeley community with the help of IRCNOCO. “I didn’t have many friends when we came here, but now I have a community.” Taking English classes at IRCNOCO connected Ali to many other families in the community who were all seeking the same thing – making Greeley their home away from home. “Greeley has changed our lives. We have new friends, we have new jobs, we have a new home. Greeley is our new home.”

IRCNOCO helped Paw get a job, learn English, and provided several other resources to get her back on her feet. “I am so grateful.” “When I first moved here, I was really scared, but I’m not scared anymore.” Paw and her children continue to make Greeley their home away from home.

Barney Flood and Pete Peterson started their Greeley insurance business in 1939 with one hundred dollars, a library table, and a borrowed typewriter. A cigar box served as their cash register. Over 80 years later, Flood and Peterson Insurance still calls Greeley home, while its reach has expanded to clients in almost every state and several countries. “We stay fiercely independent in order to fulfill our promises to our clients and our employees,” said Brett Kemp, President of Flood and Peterson. That promise involves listening to clients before making insurance coverage recommendations. Chief Operations Officer Whitney Shupe explained, “Our process is not cookie-cutter. We have a highly personalized approach with our clients, taking time to understand what is of value to them and how they want to protect their assets.” Agents help clients think about the assets they have but may not think to insure, like jewelry, fine art, and other collectibles. They help individuals protect not only their physical home but the items that make that house a home. Flood and Peterson agents take that same personalized approach with their commercial and small business clients. By identifying the specific risks within each business, Flood & Peterson enables clients to be more competitive and successful. They understand that this adds value to each business, the employees, and the community.

Helping the community extends beyond offering excellent insurance coverage at Flood and Peterson. “Giving back is in our DNA,” Shupe commented. Ledgers from 1941 show revenue of $500, with a $4 contribution to the American Red Cross. The company generously gives to over 60 local organizations that are important to their employees and clients. Many of these focus on supporting women and children, such as the Boys & Girls Club, Weld Women 2 Women, and Crossroads Safehouse. Flood and Peterson also annually gives a generous gift to each Food Bank in the communities where it has office locations. The company offers paid time off to volunteer, and in 2019, employees logged 1200 volunteer hours at their favorite non-profits. “To fit in at Flood and Peterson, you have to have a caring heart,” said Chairman and CEO Royal Lovell. For over 80 years, Flood and Peterson has excelled at caring for their clients and the Greeley community. They help people protect the physical house they live in and the important and valuable items that truly make a house a home. Personal and business insurance needs fluctuate, so Kemp recommends regular reviews with your agent to confirm you have just the right amount of protection. Contact Flood and Peterson via their website at FloodPeterson.com or give them a call at 970.356.0123 for a personalized conversation about how they can help you protect what you love.

LORDS RADON HELPS PROTECT THE MOST VALUABLE THING IN YOUR HOME: THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE

ARTICLE BY KELLY ZIELLMANN

PROTECTING YOUR HOME AND WHAT’S INSIDE After working as an industrial mechanic and handyman for several years, Jay Lords wanted a career change. He initially thought home inspection sounded interesting and started taking classes to become certified. Radon mitigation immediately grabbed his attention, and he decided to become a Radon Mitigation Specialist. Lords completed the certification and went to work for a radon mitigation company. Six months later, he was sure of two things: one, that he loved the work. And two, that he was itching for something more. After talking it over with his wife Julia, the couple started Lords Radon in November 2018. They served 100 clients their first year in business. In 2020, the business doubled, despite the six-week Covid-19 economic shutdown. Radon is a naturally occurring gas that is produced when uranium breaks down. Radon levels are measured in picocuries per liter (pCi/L) of air. Levels of 4 pCi/L or more are considered hazardous. Colorado soil has a high concentration of uranium, making the state a hot spot for elevated radon levels. When radon gets trapped and builds up inside a home, it becomes toxic. According to Lords, radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. “For me, radon mitigation is about how I can lessen the chances of someone getting sick,” Lords commented. “I like helping people. It’s not just a paycheck for me. I get joy from getting out and helping people,” he explained. Radon levels can be measured using testing kits that involve placing a measuring device in the lowest area of your home for a specified amount of time. If hazardous levels of radon are detected, radon mitigation becomes necessary. Mitigation is the process of lowering radon

levels through the installation of strategically placed pipes and fans. Lords guarantees that a client’s radon levels will be reduced to below 4 pCi/l, and 99% of the systems they install bring radon levels down to 1 pCi/l. How the system looks is just as important to Lords as how it functions. “I enjoy the challenge of making the mitigation system functional as well as aesthetically pleasing for my clients.” Lords Radon is a family affair, with Julia Lords handling marketing (in addition to working as a nurse) and their middle son Jesie helping with mitigation system installation. If your home’s radon levels have never been tested, contact lordsradon@outlook.com for your free in-home assessment. Let Lords Radon help you ensure the health and safety of the people in your home.
