It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community focused revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our city. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and make a daily decision to act on them. Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, physical fitness and purposeful connections. The importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit is the focus of this issue. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health and love. Here's to a healthy and happy 2022!

NORTHERN COLORADO’S YOUTH FOR CHRIST SERVES KIDS’ MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH THROUGH SKATEBOARDING

18

O UR TOWN | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S

HALF-PIPES FOR HEALING Jeff Neel spends a considerable amount of his time with teenagers. However, Neel, the Director of The Refuge Indoor Skatepark at Northern Colorado’s Youth for Christ (NCYFC), doesn’t “just hang out with kids.” For 20 years, Neel has been committed to serving young people who have experienced challenging life circumstances. He helps them overcome their mental health issues through the programs offered at NCYFC, specifically The Refuge and Rebalance. “Poor mental health is a starvation issue that most of our society is currently experiencing,” Neel explains. Neel and his team at NCYFC are committed to helping young people through their volatile teenage years. Skateboarding is one of the most impactful ways they accomplish this goal. Founded in 2001, The Refuge has seen significant growth in reach and impact over the past 20 years. The skatepark provides opportunities for free skating on Friday nights as well as skate leagues and other group activities throughout the week. Although to some, the idea of skateboarding leading to improved mental health may seem strange; there is real science behind why skateboarding helps. When children experience trauma, their rational decision-making ability can get “hijacked.” “Kids making dumb decisions seems really

annoying until you learn what they’ve gone through,” Neel says. There are four areas of the brain involved in decision-making. Most therapeutic recreation activities activate one or two of these areas. Skateboarding, however, activates all four areas of the brain, allowing kids to overcome this “hijacking” and make better decisions. Research shows that teens who skateboard make more progress in their mental health therapy than their peers who don’t. The neuroscience behind skateboarding helps teens process their trauma and improve their mental health. Neel and his team took this science-driven research a step further and created a mental health improvement program called Rebalance. This program hires and trains adult volunteers to guide kids through a 12-week program. Each session starts with skateboarding or an obstacle course designed to highlight a specific character value such as honesty. A roundtable discussion follows, where teens get to explore the importance of each value, and trained adults utilize Trust-Based Relational Intervention to help kids work through their trauma and heal. Partnering with District 6, the Department of Human Services, and the Department of Justice, NCYFC offers this program to at-risk youth in Northern Colorado. CONTINUED >

The community is taking notice of the incredible results being met through these programs. Recently, a teen receiving parole requested that the judge assign him to Rebalance, and parents regularly ask if their children can continue even when the program ends. Jeff Neel does way more than hanging out with kids. His goal is that “for the entirety of their teenage life, teens have adults who care enough to help them walk through difficult situations.” Greeley is fortunate to have people like Neel who care so deeply about our young people, organizations like NCYFC who actively engage in serving this population, and programs like The Refuge and Rebalance that help kids belong, heal, and thrive. You can help raise awareness about these incredible programs by inviting Neel to present at your business or organization, or you or your business can partner financially with NCYFC to enable more teenagers to engage in these life-changing programs. Healthy Eating, Setting Goals, and Nutritious Recipes with UNC’s Director of Strength and Conditioning, Tyler Hill ARTICLE BY CAITLYN OLSON

Though we all know healthy eating provides countless benefits for our well-being and immune system and boosts our energy, why is it so difficult to cultivate healthy eating habits? Tyler Hill, Director of Strength and Conditioning at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC), says we often set our goals too big. Hill oversees all sports performance training for some of UNC’s top sports teams like football, wrestling, and swim and dive. Though Hill works with collegiate athletes who know the importance of proper nutrition, many still struggle to create consistent eating habits that benefit their performance.

“Conversely to popular belief, clean eating is not about going cold turkey,” Hill explains. “It’s about choosing your battles -choosing one unhealthy habit and working to reduce it.” Whether that’s limiting your soda consumption from 3 cans to 2, small goals are what can lead to a consistent pattern of healthy choices. Hill says, “You won’t understand the importance of healthy eating until you do it right,” but as soon as his athletes make the switch toward a cleaner diet, “they never go back.” CONTINUED >

Recipe 1 INGREDIENTS • 1 cup, Non-fat vanilla Greek Yogurt • 2 spoonfuls Chocolate protein powder • 1 spoonful Peanut Butter Fit powder

• 1 spoonful Hershey cocoa powder • Granola • Fruit of choice

DIRECTIONS When Hill feels those nighttime cravings approach, he makes this simple yet effective snack. This combination of food has slow digestive proteins, making it sit in your system longer, so your body feeds off of it at a slower rate. This snack can help you burn calories while you sleep. Here’s how: Combine Greek Yogurt, chocolate protein powder, PB Fit powder, Hershey cocoa powder in a bowl and stir. Add granola and fruit to the top and enjoy! This recipe is sweet, yet healthy, and will curb those cravings we once thought only potato chips could.

Recipe 2 INGREDIENTS • 1 cucumber, sliced • 1 cup tomatoes, diced • 1 cup green pepper, sliced • ½ cup Feta Cheese, cubed

• • • • •

1/3 cup cup onion, sliced 1/3 cup cup pitted Kalamata olives ¼ cup olive oil 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar Salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS Whether you’re in a hurry at lunch or after school, this Greek Salad recipe is perfect for a quick, healthy lunch or dinner option. Start by slicing your cucumber into lengthwise parts and dicing your tomatoes, onions, and green pepper. Add cucumber, tomatoes, onions, green peppers into a bowl and mix. Add olive oil and vinegar to the veggie mix and stir. Finally, add feta cheese and Kalamata olives to the bowl and season with salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy!

GREELEY’S OSTEOSTRONG IS THE BEST PLACE TO HELP KEEP YOU ACTIVE, OUTDOORS, AND MOVING

TIPS FROM DOUG AND TERRI TO KEEP YOUR BODY STRONG: • Maintain high water intake and sleep requirements to allow your body to repair itself. • Use resistance bands when exercising for a safer method for your joints. • Ensure your macronutrient focus is on high protein intake and low carbohydrates. • Look out for quality micronutrients that should have anticompetitive ingredients included.

Deeply rooted in the bones of many Coloradans is the innate desire to get outdoors and get active. Whether that be going for a hike in the beautiful Rocky Mountains or taking a walk along one of Greeley’s nature trails, getting outdoors is a top priority for many Greeley residents. However, when our bodies hinder our ability to do the things we love, what can we do to keep them strong? Doug and Terri Aden, owners of Greeley’s OsteoStrong, have the answer for many of us struggling with bone health, osteoporosis, or joint and back pain and believe that OsteoStrong is the best place in Greeley to help keep you active, outdoors, and moving. Osteostrong uses a process known as Osteogenic Loading to help promote skeletal strength, an area of the body the Adens feel is easy to neglect. “Our number one focus is working on skeletal strength conditioning. Everybody has a skeletal system, so we can be a benefit to everybody.” Although a majority of those walking through the doors at OsteoStrong seek relief from ailments based on a doctor’s recommendation, many participants are repeat clients who strive to keep up the health of their bones. Even athletes attempting to reach the next level of peak strength will take advantage of Osteostrong’s opportunities to strengthen their skeletal systems, improve their balance, and enhance their athletic performance. “Nothing has been more rewarding than seeing and hearing from the heroes of our center, no matter their age or physical condition, being able to maximize their body’s condition and accomplish things they haven’t in years.” Sandy, a member of Osteostrong since 2021, raves about her experience at Osteostrong. “I enjoy hiking and walking, but the pain in my right hip had gotten so bad I hadn’t been able to go for a walk in a year and a half. Within three months of visiting OsteoStrong I was able to go for a walk with no pain for the first three blocks. That same week I went for a half-hour gentle hike in the mountains.” Anna, a member since May of 2021, concurs, stating: “My knees have felt so much better since joining OsteoStrong. I am a barber, and standing all day was really hard due to the knee pain. Thanks to OsteoStrong, I have more stamina and less pain.” One of Doug and Terri Aden’s primary goals is helping keep you active, outdoors, and moving. But most importantly, the Aden’s want to help you continue doing the things you love to do without any physical hindrances. So, whether you seek improved Bone Density, posture, balance, athletic performance, or less joint and back pain, stop by OsteoStrong in Greeley to ensure your quick way to skeletal health.

GET UP AND MOVE THE BENEFITS OF GETTING YOUR KIDS INVOLVED IN CLUB SPORTS

Getting your kids up and moving is one simple way to improve their physical and mental health now and for years to come. It’s crucial that kids are getting at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day—one easy way to achieve this goal is club sports. Lynda McManus, Director of Operations for Northern Colorado Rush Soccer Club, Greeley’s local soccer club that has served Greeley’s youth since 1978, has experienced firsthand the benefits of getting your kids involved in club sports in her 20+ year career coaching and organizing club soccer. McManus finds the primary benefits that she’s encountered over the years are threefold: physical, mental, and social.

1. physical In club soccer, players continuously move on the field and travel up to 4-7 miles a match.

2. mental Increased physical exercise helps kids and manage stress, which is vital for players managing schoolwork, demands at home, and social pressures.

3. social Club sports are significant in teaching our kids how to work together with their teammates toward a common goal, giving our athletes relational and leadership skills.

10 TIPS FOR A H E A LT H Y P R E G N A N CY FROM DR. ALEXIA PEAKE AT

For the past decade, Dr. Alexia Inhulsen, owner of Peake Wellness Center, has changed the lives of dozens of women in Greeley. Though it wasn’t always Dr. Inhulsen’s intention to specialize in women’s health issues like fertility, infertility, and pre and postpartum care, she says, “One of my first patients came to me at the tender age of 20 years old. Her pregnancy wasn’t planned; she was scared and didn’t have a lot of resources at her disposal.” After one visit with Dr. Inhulsen, this young woman couldn’t believe the relief that came shortly after her chiropractic adjustment and gladly shared her relief with all of the other moms in her birthing class. “Before I knew it, I had an office full of pregnant women!” Dr. Inhulsen explains. Since then, Dr. Inhulsen has helped women across Northern Colorado along their fertility journey to ensure that they stay healthy at all stages, whether planning to get pregnant, during pregnancy, or postpartum. “Because healthy moms make healthy babies,” Dr. Inhulsen explains. Check out these ten tips from the expert herself to ensure that your pregnancy is as healthy as can be. And if you’re looking to get pregnant or in the postpartum phase, stop by Peake Wellness Center to meet Dr. Inhulsen and learn more about the benefits chiropractic care can have on fertility.

Enjoy it now because it gets difficult to catch multiple zzzs in a row once the baby comes! A newborn typically eats every two hours, making it a tiresome task to keep them fed, even if you’re breastfeeding.

02

WAT E R .

One gallon per day is your goal! Amniotic fluid is primarily water, not to mention all the additional blood circulating through your body, so keeping well-hydrated is essential to a healthy pregnancy. If you’re going to breastfeed, this will also come in handy.

It’s no secret that your body goes through a lot of changes while you’re pregnant so working with someone who can help you work out and do daily tasks to decrease pain and improve overall body mobility is a great investment.

Of course, this one is a given! Ensure that your adjuster has additional training, preferably Webster Certified, and experience working with pregnant women.

M AG N E S I U M .

Yes, you read that right; however, it’s not what you’re thinking! Though it’s hard to avoid the nasty white sugars that aren’t good for you, GOOD sugars, like those found in fruits and veggies, are a great resource for brain function, muscle movement, and caffeine replacement.

100 grams of protein a day keeps the baby happy and healthy!

The majority of US residents are deficient in this important nutrient, so talk to a healthcare professional who understands the importance of the KIND of magnesium you should be taking. Not all magnesium is created equal! One works great for constipation, while others are great sources for leg cramps or brain fog, which are common ailments during pregnancy.

08

OMEGAS.

Because a new body is growing, taking a good omega supplement is great for them and great for mom too!

09

V I TA M I N D .

Especially during this “cold and flu season,” this amazing nutrient works much like a steroid to boost your immunity! Be sure you’re getting it from a good source, though. The majority of Vitamin D on the market is rancid and NOT recommended by most healthcare professionals.

10

LIQUID B V I TA M I N S .

The body can more readily absorb vitamins in a liquid form and B’s in particular are great resources especially for nausea!

RECONNECT AND REFRESH IN S W E E T B E W E L L N E S S ’ S A LT R O O M

“Yoga in today’s society is a pop culture trend. But in reality, yoga is much more than that. Yoga is rehab, relaxation, and rejuvenation that everyone needs in today’s world.”

“It’s like you’re sitting on a beach somewhere, breathing in the salt of the ocean,” says Amanda Lehmann, a yoga instructor in Sweet Be Wellness’ Salt Room. This unique and revitalizing space, right here in Greeley, uses a halogenerator to grind and diffuse pure sodium chloride into the air. Lehmann says, “The salt particles carry positive ions which collect anything that doesn’t belong in the blood and purifies it.” This treatment clears client’s airways, opens up their lungs, relaxes their muscles, and works as an anti-inflammatory. Over the last decade, Lehmann has uncovered the countless health benefits of yoga and mindful breathing. Today, she sees the benefits of these practices multiply when paired with the salty air in the studio’s salt chamber. Lehmann incorporates restorative yoga into the salt room experience to deepen client’s breath and strengthen their bodies. Tailoring each session to her client’s needs, Lehmann helps her clients reconnect with their bodies. She says, “When they come in to see me, they’re coming in to remap the nervous system to find peace more continuously throughout the day.” However, beyond a session in Sweet Be’s salt room, Lehmann says that simply taking time to move at home helps de-stress from the busyness of life and finds that relaxation is more than just “sitting back and letting go.” Rather, you have to “Actively participate in your body’s relaxation,” and recommends taking 6 minutes a day to move your body and practice deep breathing. Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition

The Cold Plunge

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.”

40

S ELF CA R E | FITNESS

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
