In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. I am personally thankful this season to have the opportunity to live in this wonderful community that has supported my husband and I and our six children as we have started businesses, blended our family together, and created new traditions. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. We are always grateful for multigenerational families in business, that have passed down values such as integrity, hard work, and caring for their customers. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. The Ghent family has proudly served Northern Colorado for over six decades. In the summer of 1976, current owner Bob Ghent began working in the car wash at his father’s dealership. During college breaks, he handled sales and managed leasing, finance, insurance, and sales. In 1989, Bob purchased Ghent Chevrolet in Greeley. In 1990 he built a new facility in west Greeley, then added Cadillac to the franchise in 1999. As a third-generation dealer, it’s not just the cars that motivate Bob. He is passionate about the community and is involved in civic activities in northern Colorado. “As a business owner and local citizen, it is my responsibility to give back to the community in which I live,” said Bob. Bob has served the community in numerous capacities, including as a member of the Greeley Rotary Club, Millbank Society for the Boys and Girls Club, a business community division captain for the North Colorado Medical Center Foundation’s Montfort Children’s Clinic, and a supporter of the Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity. Bob is proud of his family - his wife Ann, son Erick, and daughter Sara. Erick is currently the Chevrolet Manager and is following in the footsteps of his great-grandfather, grandfather, and father by entering the automobile business in Northern Colorado. He will be a fourth-generation dealer. “It’s a pleasure for me to work alongside my son,” said Bob. CONTINUED >

Sears Real Estate Steve joined Sears Real Estate in 1996 and is the managing broker and full-time Realtor. Sears has been in Greeley for 50 years and prides itself in having great agents that give back to our community. Steve’s son, Seth, started working with The Baker Team at Sears Real Estate in April 2022. Steve said it’s been a joy working with his son. “He has proven to be a quick study and hard worker,” said Steve. “He understands our community and also sees the value of our philanthropic and community involvement mindset at Sears.” Steve believes that bringing Seth on board helped enable The Baker Team to do more things and engage with a different generation of buyers and sellers. As a proud dad, Steve said it’s been satisfying to see Seth quickly grasp the business and serve clients well. The one challenge Steve joked about is that Seth has to see his dad way more than he’s used to. Steve believes that working with family is rewarding! “You get to see their successes and help them through the tough times with guidance and counseling – just like a parent always does,” said Steve. “At the end of the day you’re still family and you love family no matter what!”

Austin & Austin An Austin family member has been involved with Austin & Austin Real Estate since its inception over 100 years ago. In 1903, E.R. and Fred Austin opened Austin & Austin, offering real estate and auction services in Colorado, and were in the national spotlight when they sold the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show in Denver in 1913! E.R. Austin’s stepson, Bruce Willard, went to work for the company after his Air Force service in 1987. Bruce’s daughter, Natalie, began as the office manager eight years ago and is now becoming a licensed broker. Natalie said that learning about the real estate industry from her dad has been one of the most fulfilling and beneficial things to happen in her life. “Learning from someone who has had knowledge passed to them generationally has been amazing in terms of holding on to the roots of how the real estate industry has evolved into what it is today,” said Natalie. Natalie admits that working with family is rewarding, but also has its challenges. “When I walk through the doors at the office, I’m not only Natalie the broker, but I’m Natalie the daughter,” said Natalie. “The many hats you wear while working with family can be more than a job sometimes, but it’s the best…knowing this is what your family has experience doing, and you are helping carry on some sort of business tradition – it truly is extremely rewarding.” Bruce Willard, and his daughter Natalie Snead

Kenny’s Steak House and The G.O.A.T. Sports Bar

Matthew and Leona Larson, along with Dick Monfort, own Kenny’s Steak House, originally opened in 1995 under the name Stampede Steak Ranch. In 2001, after some major renovations, the name was changed to Kenny’s Steak House in honor of Dick’s father Kenny Monfort, who had recently passed away. Matthew and Leona’s sons Alex and Andrew grew up in the restaurant industry. While in high school and college, you could find the brothers at Kenny’s washing dishes, bartending, and managing. Matthew gives much praise to his wife Leona. Although Leona was an eighthgrade math teacher for 30 years while Matthew ran the restaurants, she was an active supporter and helped with as much as she could with catering, cleaning, and advice. “You always need a strong partner to get through the challenges of owning a business,” said Matthew. Matthew and Alex are partners on their newest venture, The G.O.A.T. Sports Bar, which opened in February of 2021. Alex’s wife, Daisy oversees social media marketing and reputation management at both Kenny’s and The G.O.A.T. Sports Bar, while Andrew is a manager at The G.O.A.T. Matthew feels blessed to be able to work alongside his family on a daily basis where they support each other. When challenges occur, and they have been plentiful in the past few years, it is comforting to have the support of each other,” said Matthew. The Larson family considers their employees an extension of family - they call it their restaurant family, and they aspire to build a culture where they can feel proud of what they do for the community.

Orthopaedic & Spine Center of the Rockies Jessica Stevenson has worked with her mom, Linda Davis, for 18 years at the Orthopaedic & Spine Center of the Rockies (OCR). OCR encompasses more than 45 specialists, serving patients at six medical campuses, and empowers patients to keep their bodies in pace with their passions. Serving the residents of Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, and beyond since 1969, OCR has offices in Fort Collins, Loveland, Greeley, Longmont, Lafayette, and Westminster. OCR will break ground on its new medical campus in Greeley in December 2022. Linda, now a Medical Records Clerk, has worked at OCR in various roles for 50 years. Jessica’s first job with OCR was as a scanner for the business office. It was because of her mom that she was able to start working at OCR at a young age. “It was an after-school job when I was in high school,” said Jessica. “The position was offered only to employee’s dependents.” Jessica loves being able to work with her mom. “I’m really close to my family, so it’s nice I can see her on a daily basis, especially since she’s bad at checking her text messages,” Jessica said jokingly. Linda counters that it’s a joy to talk to Jessica face to face every day, instead of over the phone. With Linda’s long history of employment at OCR, Jessica recalls growing up and watching her mom work there. She feels that OCR has been a part of her entire life. “OCR is basically a second home to me,” Jessica said.

West Point Carpet One West Point Carpet One was established in 1998 and supplies and installs custom interior finishes, and serves custom builders, remodelers, and retail clients across the front range. With over 40 years of experience, Rocky Gentry, the original owner, built a following which has paved the way for the success of the company. Rocky’s son, Ty Gentry, joined the team just after completing his teaching degree at the University of Northern Colorado in 2004. He became co-owner in 2012 and purchased the company completely in November of 2021. Ty said that having a mutual aim for the company has always kept respect between him and his dad. “We always want what is best for the clients, which gives us a common goal to strive for,” said Ty. “I know many father/son businesses don’t have that luxury, but it has been nothing short of a privilege to work alongside my dad for so long!” A handful of other family members also work at West Point Carpet One and feel the support of one another. “Your family members have your best interest in mind and will do what they can to help at all times,” said Ty. The West Point Carpet One family feels blessed to be a part of this community. “Even though Greeley is growing, I feel that the small-town vibe is still alive and well,” said Ty. “Our company is doing well, and it is all thanks to a community who wants to ‘buy small’ and support the local family-owned businesses.” Tyler Gentry and his father, Rocky Gentry

Hoshiko Farms The Hoshiko Family has been an integral part of Greeley and Weld County for over a century. They epitomize the fulfillment of the American Dream and are grateful for their heritage and the opportunities they’ve had in the United States. Paul (Katsuma) and his wife Tsugeya Hoshiko immigrated from Kumamoto, Japan to Weld County in 1914. They had six children and initially worked for farmers as field workers, but eventually purchased a small tract of land east of Kersey to farm on their own. During the mid-1950s, after serving in the U.S. Army, their youngest son Paul Jr., took over the family farm and expanded it to more acres throughout the Greeley area. Paul Jr.’s son, Dennis, has been the general manager of Hoshiko Farms since he returned home from college in the late 1970s. He and his parents, Paul and Jean worked closely together to expand and improve their agricultural operations to include a wholesale produce company that supplied onions to customers throughout the nation. Since Dennis’ father and mother have both passed away, he has scaled back his businesses and now leases most of his land to neighboring farmers. “My grandparents and parents endured a lot of trials and adversity throughout their lives for the benefit of their children and grandchildren,” said Dennis. “Few places in the world afford families, especially immigrants, the ability to stay and work together as ours has for several generations, and for that, the Hoshikos are very grateful.” Dennis’ son, Hunter, who has worked with Dennis, is a fourth-generation Weld County resident, holds a business degree, and is a local entrepreneur involved in land use and water development. The Hoshiko’s original values of taking chances and looking for new opportunities are instilled in Hunter, and he carries that throughout his life. “I owe everything to my great-grandfather, grandfather, and dad,” Hunter said. His great-grandfather came to the U.S. at age 16 looking for a better life for himself and his future family. Hunter credits that first step, as it pioneered how the Hoshiko family operates - never settle, take chances, and always look for better opportunities.

DONALD LINDSAY SPEAKS ON UNION COLONY'S MARINE DETACHMENT

Donald Lindsay was a former United States Marine who was looking for purpose and a place to belong as he navigated the intricacies of adjusting to civilian life. When he discovered Union Colony’s Marine Detachment 1093 - a military organization priding itself on maintaining military camaraderie and faithfully serving veterans and the Greeley/Evans community, he found it was more than just an opportunity to occupy his spare hours. “For the first time since I had served during the Vietnam War with my Marine detachment, I finally found a place where I felt like I belonged. From day one, I have had a sense of belonging and being wanted by this group, and I give everything I can to support them,” Lindsay shares fondly. It is this sense of belonging and the opportunity to serve his community that has kept the Jr. Vice Commandant involved in this detachment for six years. The organization’s earliest stages came from an idea over 20 years ago in Greeley. Retired Marine Jim Keppler put an ad in the Greeley Tribune calling any former Marines in the area to meet for fellowship and business at Bittersweet Park. Fifteen Marine veterans showed up on the first Saturday, and so began the Union Colony Marine Detachment 1093, which was born, uniting under the purpose of preserving traditions and promoting the interests of the United States Marine Corps. Today, the organization meets at Moose Lodge 808 on the third Saturday morning of every month. After enjoying a traditional military breakfast affectionately dubbed S.O.S is shared, consisting of powdered eggs, cream gravy, and spam over a piece of toast. The group then discusses relevant businesses and opportunities to serve fellow veterans and the community. “The Marine Corps League was originally formed for camaraderie amongst former Marines, and to assist them in transitioning into civilian life,” shares Vice

Commandant Ken Balltrip, who has served in the organization for nearly 14 years. Now, Detachment 1093 serves their community in a variety of capacities, from honoring fallen soldiers and veterans to assisting in the training of Young Marines, and volunteering to serve charitable organizations. Greeley Lifestyle is thankful for the opportunity to highlight this detachment and honor them for their dedicated service to both their country and to their Northern Colorado community for these many years. • Toys for Tots: For nearly 10 years, the detachment has assisted in donating and collecting nearly 20,000 toys a year to distribute to over 3,000 children in Northern Colorado. • Denver Children’s Hospital: In partnership with the Military Order of the Devil Dogs, the attachment collects donations to provide for the hospital’s canine therapy program for children. • Honor Flight Guardians: Raising funds for veterans to fly to Washington DC at no personal cost to visit the memorial commemorating where they served. • Military Honor Guard: Detachment 1093 performs traditional military rituals at funerals for deceased veterans, including commandant and chaplain rites and, if desired, a 3-round volley by company riflemen. Young Marines + Jr. • ROTC: Partnering with training and service opportunities for young members of the community hoping to grow as individuals and those who may want to pursue military service. • Community Events: Whether it’s their annual golf tournament, or this year’s Marine Birthday Bash, Detachment 1093 offers multiple fundraising opportunities for the community to participate in.

HOW INDEPENDENT ROOFING MADE A BUSINESS INTO A FAMILY Unless your roof is damaged, leaking, or falling in, you probably rarely think about it in your everyday life. For the family behind Independent Roofing, replacing tiles and protecting your home is their life, and has been for generations. Keith Montey Jr. founded Independent Roofing in 1973. He operated the business out of his house. was truly local and familial from the beginning—with only a

tiny trailer and an old pickup truck liable to backfire more often than not. The first employee to join the Independent team was Tim Kramer, who at that time a junior in high school. Soon after, Tim’s wife Jo became the third member of the company. After Keith’s wife joined, the four young entrepreneurs, and former high school classmates, formed a legal partnership and moved their burgeoning

business into an office building. It was, as Jo describes it, “the epitome of an American dream.” Sixteen years after Keith created Independent Roofing, he resigned. Tim took his place as president and served as sole shareholder. Following the pattern of worker-progressing-to-senior-management, Steve Cooper joined the team and quickly became vice president. What had once been a single-man company grew to be the largest residential roofing company in Northern Colorado.

By 2008, Tim had a thriving business and growing family. His daughter, Jonde, had earned the title of favorite phlebotomist at NCMC’s blood donor room and laboratory, while his son Kaleb ran a photography business. But the world, and the weather, had plans to bring the family back together. The Windsor tornado wrecked homes across Northern Colorado, and with hail storms pounding houses, the Independent Roofers received non-stop requests for repairs. Jonde started working in the office between her shifts at NCMC, and Kaleb fully stepped away from his photography to help, too.

Tim’s children—who grew up reading weather reports, watching storm clouds, and climbing ladders—took on larger roles in the business. When Tim stepped down and Steve retired in 2022, Kaleb and Jonde became the new president and vice president of the company. It’s been seamless for Jonde to transition into management, and she took after her father’s example to be a servant to those around her. As hard as the Independent family works, they play even harder and make sure to take care of each other. Jonde says, “We all take pride in our job, but our family unit always comes first.” Independent Roofing is proud to call Greeley home and continues to help serve the community. The family is thankful for their community, and continued support from Greeley. They look forward to growing even more and are excited about what the future holds for their family and business. On September 22, 2022, Pioneer Press in Greeley, Colorado hosted the debut ceremony of the new LED-UV Printing System, joined by fellow supporters and clients, the company welcomed their newest, advanced technology press. The 20,000-square-foot production facility just welcomed a new high-end piece of equipment – an eight-color press, utilizing Light-Emitting Diodes and Ultraviolet light (LED-UV) cured inks, and an advanced color management system. The LED-UV technology allows Pioneer Press to increase production while also reducing energy use. “Not only is the press extremely efficient, but it also takes less energy, and is the most state-of-the-art press in the Rocky Mountain region,” said Cris Sorelle, Owner of Pioneer Press. Many presses use traditional energy-hungry lamps, which run over 900 degrees Fahrenheit and necessitate sufficient air conditioning to cool the building. The new LED-UV lamps run at 72 degrees and use less than 20% of the total energy of a traditional press. In addition to the energy savings, Sorelle said the LED-UV curing delivers press sheets that are completely dry as soon as they come off the press. This produces vivid color and quick finishing for immediate processing and shipping. “You get excellent color because when you instantly dry the ink, it doesn’t absorb back into the paper,” said Sorelle. “It’s going to last a lot longer and stay true to the color you see when it comes off the press.”

Boys & Girls Club of Weld County Host Annual Breakfast to Share Community Impact

While several counties in Colorado are expected to see their child population fall, Weld County’s population of people under the age of 18 is expected to double between 2017 and 2050. Additionally, one in six kids across Colorado is alone or unsupervised every day after school. The Boys and Girls of America have served the nation for over 100 years, since 1860. Boys & Girls Clubs of Weld County (BGCWC) has served youth ages six through 18 since 1964, providing hope and opportunity to families in our community. BGCWC helps students in the areas of education, health and wellness, sports and recreation, service and leadership, and arts. The club not only helps in these specific areas but also tailors to the needs of the community. In Greeley, BGCWC reaches the community through events, programs, and connecting with the students. “We try to fill in the gaps in between school, life, and home life; doing our best to support the children in any way we can,” says Travis Hitt, VP of Marketing & Engagement. The club is open all day in the summer, and after school until 7pm during the school year. BGCWC hosts an annual event called the Youth of the Year: Hope Breakfast. Community leaders that attend this event, like Jamie Baessler - the President and CEO of Baessler Homes, are able to hear about the experiences of some

of the youth that attend the clubs. Their incredible stories about their lives and how the clubs have helped them become the people that they are today, is an inspiration to those that attend. The breakfast serves as a fundraiser, but more importantly, a glimpse into the bigger picture of the impact that clubs have on these youth and the community as a whole. In previous years, BGCWC has raised thousands of dollars for multiple scholarships to give these Youth of the Year. The scholarships are carefully considered through a process of recommendation letters, essays, a three-minute long speech, and even a panel of judges to review the students and their intentions to improve themselves and make an impact on the community. BGCWC is extremely thankful for all the support from the community and the continued encouragement received from families and students in the area.
