PLANTING TREES WITH THE WEST GREELEY CONSERVATION DISTRICT
growing your haven ARTICLE RACHEL HAWLEY
A HUGE PART OF GREELEY’S HISTORY IS AGRICULTURAL. West Greeley Conservation District is working to preserve their history by educating and inspiring others to bring conservation home. Planting trees in your backyard is one way to be a good steward of your own land. Soil conservation, wind breaks, pollinator attraction, and fresh air are just a few of the reasons to start growing trees in your backyard. Creating privacy and functionality through the use of natural sustainable growth, is something we can all do. By adding a few trees to your backyard, you are not only creating a more beautiful home for yourself, but you are also creating a more sustainable environment for the whole neighborhood. When planting new trees, there is a lot more that goes into it than a city person, like me, might think. Proper placement is vital to the health and growth of any plant. Thinking ahead is important with a project like this and can help your plants thrive by choosing the best environments to sustain them. By following these five steps you can learn the best way to start your long-term tree garden.

:: S TE P 1 :: Join one of the WGCD workshops to discover the perfect tree for you. They’ll teach you where to plant your tree to create wind breaks, attract pollinators, or even how to build a DIY drip system. Using the WGCD as an educational resource is the best way to create lasting care for your trees. :: S TE P 2 :: Once you’ve decided what purpose your trees should have, sign up for the WGCD tree sales! The trees start off as conservation grade seedlings. They have many local tree options to choose from. Sales begin in November and end in March. So, make sure to get your name on the list! They rarely have trees to spare. :: S TE P 3 :: It’s time to start digging! Keep in mind soil quality when choosing a spot to plant your tree - it must be supportive to your tree’s growth. Make sure to ask a WGCD employee what type of soil you need for the tree you want. Bring in a sample of your soil and they’ll tell you what tree works best for the soil you have in place. :: S TE P 4 :: A common misconception is that big trees don’t need to be watered. But in Colorado, where rain may be scarce, watering even the large ones is very important. While getting water straight from the hose is easy enough, watering the trees is a chore that is easily forgotten. This is where the DIY drip system comes in! WGCD can teach you ways to water your trees in a natural sustainable way. :: S TE P 5 :: The next step? Relax and enjoy! Now that the dirty work is done, you get to watch your small seedling sprout into a full-grown tree. Now sit back and revel in the beauty of your growing estate.

Benefits of a
chemical-free home
HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED WHAT IT WOULD TAKE TO TURN YOUR HOUSEHOLD CHEMICAL-FREE? It's not as hard as you might think! We hear a lot about the dangers of chemical ingredients, but it's easy to ignore all of the warnings and keep using our favorite products. When you don't know of a better alternative, it's just what you do! However, all of those ingredients add up and can make a big difference in your health, as well as the health of your family and pets. The products that are most important to swap out depend on your lifestyle and what you use the most. If your little ones are eating food right off of the counter, you might consider the ingredients from the cleaner you just used to wipe it down and start by switching to a natural method.
ARTICLE BY HAYLEY HYER
If you have sensitive skin, you might start by taking inventory of your beauty and personal care products to see what you can replace. To get you started, here are three DIY products that you can make yourself for your chemical-free home.

Greeley Lifestyle | April 2021
DIY Scented Body Moisturizer Just like a new candle can brighten your day, a shimmery scented lotion can make you feel like a queen. The only problem is all of the artificial fragrances, alcohols, dyes, and other chemicals that your skin is absorbing from that bottle. There are some cleaner options such as unscented lotions, but that's a lot less fun. This DIY moisturizer allowed you to customize your own scent while still treating your skin the best you can. The key ingredient? Olive oil! Yes, any bottle of olive oil from your kitchen works. Pour some in a smaller bottle and add several drops of your favorite essential oils. Olive oil is super hydrating, feels great, and will make you question why you ever used lotion in the first place. Plus it's safe for your whole body. Just be mindful of the essential oils you choose. Some types—such as peppermint, eucalyptus, or tea tree oils—cause a cooling effect and can feel uncomfortable if it gets on your face or other sensitive areas.
DIY Counter Cleaner: Safe for Granite + Marble! You probably know that vinegar is a great natural cleaner for most surfaces. Unfortunately, it can be pretty damaging to delicate countertops made from granite or marble. Here's a DIY cleaning spray that's safe for any type of counters you have!
Ingredients + Rubbing alcohol + Dish soap
+ Essential Oils + Water
Directions In a plastic or glass spray bottle, mix one part alcohol with one part water. Add several drops of dish soap and whichever essential oils you would like to add for your desired scent. Shake it up each time you use it as the ingredients will tend to separate. Although it's natural and safe, still avoid spraying directly on your skin as the alcohol and dish soap can dry you out. DIY Laundry Scent Enhancer If you have ever added those popular scent beads to your load of laundry before, you know how lovely it is to pull your amazingly scented clothes out of the dryer. The funny thing about a product like that is it truly has no purpose other than adding a good smell, but it does add lots of chemicals to your daily life! There's a safer and more beneficial way to make your clothes smell heavenly. Try this DIY scent enhancer with your next load of laundry and put it to the test.
Ingredients 3 parts Epsom Salt + 1 part Baking Soda + Essential Oils
Directions Mix your ingredients together in a jar or canister and scoop about ¼ cup directly into the washer basin before adding the clothes—just like you would with scented beads. Continue with your laundry like normal.

While these three recipes give you a great start, that's definitely not all you can do to kick the chemicals out of your home. For more information on starting a chemical-free household, you can browse online resources such as ChemFreeCom.com or find a social media group to join with like-minded people who have some experience from their own trial and error. If you get overwhelmed, remember that you don't have to get rid of all chemicals in one day. Every swap you make is something to celebrate!

Spring into Action Ways to Get Involved HELPING THE COMMUNITY THROUGH WELD FOOD BANK
DID YOU KNOW 1 IN 3 CHILDREN ARE NOW GOING HUNGRY IN WELD COUNTY ALONE? When COVID-19 hit our community Weld Food Bank immediately made the necessary safety changes they needed to keep their doors open, knowing that their community would become more and more impacted by hunger. Struggling families are seeing a severe shortage in food, similar to that of the 2008 recession. While food banks are no longer able to host food drives, donations from the community are still powering this life saving nonprofit. DONATE One dollar can provide four meals for a family. This is an easy way to help the community without having to leave your home. On the Weld Food Bank website, you can even choose specific items you would like to donate to struggling families. VOLUNTEER There are many ways to volunteer your time to the food bank. From packaging perishables, to delivering emergency food boxes to senior citizens; from calling partners, to putting food straight into the car of someone who desperately needs it. ADVOCATE Check out the Weld Food Bank social media pages and share with friends! Spreading the word about this hardworking nonprofit is the best way to give the community the support it needs. NOTHING SAYS SPRING LIKE THE AROMA OF FRESH CUT HERBS IN A CRISP, COLD, COCKTAIL. With warmer weather finally here, growing herbs at home can transform your cocktail hour and add a fresh kick to your springtime favorites. Growing herbs is incredibly easy and can be done in a variety of ways- from a container in a window, to a planter box in the yard. With a container or garden full of fresh herbs, you will be ready to take your cocktails up a notch. We partnered with Cheyenne Rising, the front of house manager over at Gourmet Grub to talk about a few herbs and share her favorite spring cocktails. Growing herbs onsite at their restaurant helps them create incredibly refreshing, and spectacular drinks. Basil is a bright herb that is easy to grow and perfect for cocktails. Make sure to harvest immediately before mixing drinks and take leaves from the top, to ensure a continual harvest. Fresh muddled basil leaves lend a crispness to Cheyenne's GBC cocktail. Sage is easy to grow and does well in containers. The leaves add an earthy freshness to a refreshing cherry infused bourbon, Gourmet Grub calls it their "Mr. Brown". Mint is also easy to grow, but give it lots of room. It like to spread out, and is virtually indestructible in the garden. Because it is such a versatile herb, Gourmet Grub uses it throughout their menu, but they especially love it in their unique Rhubarb Mint Mojito Try recreating these refreshing cocktails with herbs grown at home and take your cocktail game to new heights!

This data is a sampling of sold properties from January 1, 2021 to March 12, 2021. Source: IRES MLS. When this Publication is delivered, the market is expected to reflect a more competitive Sellers’ Market. Call Shawna Blair for market updates at 720-203-7400.
AFRAID TO UPSIZE OR DOWNSIZE? The front range real estate market remains a seller’s market—the perfect time to sell. At the same time, even with low inventory it is still very doable to find your ideal replacement home whether it’s larger or smaller. If you’re holding off buying and selling because of the scariness of the market, I encourage you to give me a call. I will listen and talk to you about your options, possibilities and risk factors with no obligation. I’ve helped clients buy and sell through difficult market trends in the past with much success. With years of experience under my belt, I have many tools and resources to help navigate safely and efficiently.
Call or email Shawna today. 720.203.7400 Shawna@TCREG.info If you’re looking for excellence, you have found it.
