BEANS, TO THE HIP MEET UP SPOTS AND FRIENDLY FACES BEHIND THE COUNTER, THE BLUE MUG IS ONE OF GREELEY’S WARMEST GATHERING PLACES. Since its founding in 2011, The Blue Mug has cultivated a community that bounds roasting delicious, in-house coffee, but creates a space to gather for all of those looking for a place to call home. Art and Karla Long, founders of the Blue Mug, opened their first location on 35th Avenue in Greeley in September 2011. Prioritizing authentic leadership, community-focused service, and intentional belonging, they hope “that people can come from all over and immediately feel as though they belong.” Art Long always dreamt of one day owning his own business. One of Art’s first business ventures began when he opened his own bakery in the back of a coffee shop in Florence, Colorado. A few years later, Art bought the coffee shop, began learning the ins and outs of the coffee business, and later learned to roast his own coffee. Since then, Art has dedicated nearly half of his life to roasting and serving up warm coffee. Though Art and Karla take great pride in their made-in-house coffee, what they prioritize is the community that is fostered in their spaces. Having lived in Greeley for over 20 years, Art and Karla treasure the Greeley community and feel, “Proud and lucky” to be able to “Provide a space where people can gather.” 28

Greeley Lifestyle | December 2021

Art tells a story of a young woman who, having recently moved to Greeley and knowing very few people in the community, goes to the Blue Mug and everyone knows her name. The warmth and belonging that the Blue Mug provides for Greeley residents is untouched. A large part of that warmth comes from the uniquely kind staff that Art and Karla employ. The Long’s prioritize supporting and mentoring their employees, who often are young people with big dreams of their own. In accordance with the entrepreneurial spirit of the Long family, Art and Karla, along with their daughter and son in law, Janna and Austin Jenkins, are opening a brunch spot and cocktail lounge in the new Bear Paw Business District. For Art and Karla, opening a modern spot for breakfast made with fresh and local ingredients will allow families to bring their children for a weekend breakfast or friends to meet for mimosas. For Austin and Janna, opening a cocktail lounge will create a space for young and old alike to gather in a trendy and hip space like Greeley has never seen. In December 2021, Out of the Blue and After Hours will open to serve all Greeley residents. Still, the Longs hope to continue to cultivate a warm place to gather with friends and family. Art says, “I really love that we have these places where people can come together.” Just as the Blue Mug has been doing for over a decade in Greeley, Out of the Blue and After Hours will do just the same.

A LOCAL FAMILY TRADITION

Greeley Lights the Night LIGHTS SHIMMER AS DIVINELY DECORATED FLOATS MAKE THEIR WAY DOWN THE STREET AS THE GREELEY LIGHTS THE NIGHT PARADE KICKS OFF NORTHERN COLORADO’S HOLIDAY. The parade began in 1998 when the Greeley Jaycees -- a leadership training and civic organization for young people -- desired to create a holiday event that gave back to the community. The parade makes its way through downtown Greeley and concludes with lighting up Lincoln Park. After the park is lit, hot chocolate and treats are available, as well as an opportunity to see Santa Claus. Being held shortly after Thanksgiving, the parade is often the first holiday event of the season for many families. “There’s such a wonderful Christmas spirit that is cultivated when you are outside in the cold and feeling the spirit of Christmas alongside your whole community,” explains Michelle Kempema, President of the Visit Greeley Board. Part of what makes the parade special is that it is made up of, sponsored by, and attended by Greeley residents, many of whom have been raised going to the parade and continued the tradition with their own children. Those at Visit Greeley hope that the Greeley’s Lights the Night Parade continues in the years to come, allowing the holiday season to begin alongside Greeley neighbors and friends.

THE AMERICAN BALD EAGLE

GREELE Y ’S W IN TER W ILDLIFE AS YOU STROLL THROUGH GREELEY’S GREAT PARKS OR OPEN AREAS THIS SEASON, BE SURE TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR OUR COUNTRY’S NATIONAL BIRD. This time of year, American Bald Eagles are prevalent in the Greeley area. The Bald Eagle, over several decades, has made an amazing come back from near extinction. In the mid-1970s, Colorado was home to only 3 known Bald Eagle nests, but today, they number over 200. Greeley is lucky to have several active nesting sites where these raptors return annually to nest and reproduce. Eagles can be seen flying, hunting, feeding, and engaging in their annual courtship activities. They can be seen flying the skies, sitting on frozen lakes, and perching in trees and on power poles for the next few months. It is a special time of the year for us in Greeley to witness these great raptors, so be sure to bundle up, grab a warm beverage and a camera, and head out to the Poudre River Trail to observe Greeley’s great winter wildlife in all its glory. 32

GIVING BACK

Gratefully

ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES

GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. Anna Sarol

“I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent.

When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.”

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO GIVE AWAY $3OO,OOO This year the company will have nominations for the giveaway open from December 1-15, 2021. To submit a nomination, follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram and fill out the form found in the bio link. The amount given to each recipient will be based on need. The leaders of Lifestyle Publications believe God has blessed them with their company’s continued success, so they in turn wish to be a blessing and encouragement to others as they increase the amount of this year’s giveaway to those in need to $300,000 for the year.

In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy 36

HOMETOWN HERO

Travel Isolette

ONCE UPON A TIME 33RD ANNUAL NCMC FOUNDATION GALA PROCEEDS TO SUPPORT NEWBORNS

ONCE UPON A TIME, A TINY PATIENT WAS BORN. This tiny patient required extra medical care and would need to travel to a distant hospital called North Colorado Medical Center (NCMC). She would need to spend several weeks at the Monfort Family Birth Center Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The journey was long, and a vital piece of equipment called a Transport Isolette, specially designed to transport NICU babies was needed. The isolette maintains a warm environment, especially for premature babies who cannot maintain body heat. In 2020, there were 35 neonatal transports to NCMC. With the purchase of a Transport Isolette, a neonatal transport team based at NCMC can decrease the cost of care for patients, create patient-centered care with fewer transitions, and improve efficiency and equity of care overall. This year, NCMC Foundation’s 33rd Annual Gala, Once Upon a Time, will help NICU staff at NCMC’s Monfort Family Birth Center purchase travel isolettes to allow NCMC to transport babies needing neonatal intensive care services to their hospital. The NCMC Foundation invites you to be a part of this fairytale, the 33rd Annual NCMC Foundation Gala, Once Upon a Time, on Saturday, January 29, 2022. The NCMC Foundation asks for your support to continue “promoting excellence in health and education in Weld County,” Dr. Radley Helin, Neonatologist; Autumn Landry, RN; Melissa Smith, RN, BSN, IBCLC
