Letter from the Editor

If I really reflect, I find myself feeling bittersweet about August. On one hand, it holds some of my favorite memories—our annual family vacation, tons of time with friends, and my absolute favorite weather. But on the other hand, we know the carefree pace of summer is fleeting. And the chaos of life will resume soon. So let’s enjoy the coming weeks for all the joy they bring.

In August, we celebrate Kids and Pets. When I picture the ultimate backyard get-together, it would be incomplete without my kids around the fire pit and my dog patiently waiting near the grill for scraps to fall.

What better combination is there than Kids and Pets? We had the pleasure of being welcomed by St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison to play with some pups and tour their impressive facility. Their experts gave us some great tips on how to include your children in the adoption process and invite a smooth transition once your new furry friend is home.

Grow it Green in Morristown talked harvest season and the importance of showing kids the—literal—fruits of their labor. It’s the hands-in-the-dirt satisfaction that makes everything taste better. Think your littles don’t like vegetables? Think again.

Our in-house influencer, Felisha Lynch, helps us slow down and enjoy each moment. With five kids, ages ten and under, life can be chaotic. But it’s those little moments that stick with us long after summer is gone.

And what about a sweet treat that the whole family will love? The Jersey Artisan Café in Morris Plains shared their recipe for Sweet Blueberry Corn Muffins that will surely become a mainstay in your weekly breakfast rotation.

Whether your children are teeny or tall, furry or small, they’re what make up our very best memories. Let’s live up this last month of lazy days and family fun. Soak up the sun, and enjoy!

Not sure where to start? Our Events page is full of festivities, and our local partners have tons of eats and experiences for the best summer ever.

LITTLE Ms. MORRISTOWN

influencer Allie Sharkey talks going from Ms. to mama

When Allie Sharkey started her Ms. Morristown Instagram account back in 2016, she had zero expectations for what it would become. What she did know was that she loved her town and wanted to share her favorite things with everyone she knew.

The focus wouldn’t be on her as an influencer, but on all the vibrant happenings around her—so Allie made the account faceless. A social butterfly, she highlighted her favorite spots for making friends and the businesses she kept going back to. It was a reflection of life at the time. And surprisingly, locals were interested, even without ever knowing who she was.

Allie soon began organizing in-person events, and that was the only time her identity was revealed. Her followers felt like they were in on an exclusive secret, and she turned into their favorite resource for all things Morristown.

All these years later, Ms. Morristown’s persona has evolved right along with real life. Allie got married last year and took followers on the bridal ride. From dresses to cake to the ever-important bridal shoes, she showed it all. Determined to stay authentic, as she experiences life, her followers do too.

But 2026 has brought Allie her most exciting evolution yet— motherhood. Little Ms. Morristown arrived this past February, and the newlyweds couldn’t be happier. It’s been a natural transition, and baby girl fits right in. Allie is also a proud stepmom to her nine-year-old stepson and has a furbaby rescue dog named Mars. Her family is growing, along with the excitement for tons of new local experiences.

I LOVE HOW YOUR CONTENT HAS CHANGED AS YOU’VE MOVED THROUGH DIFFERENT STAGES OF LIFE, FROM YOUR WEDDING TO NOW, MOTHERHOOD. With the wedding, it was very much real-time content. I did some teasers, then I announced it. I wanted to take everyone along for the ride. But during my pregnancy, I wanted to keep this for me. I created a registry with Baby Crossing, and I used content from it. For my baby shower, I hired a content creator to do a faceless video so I could share after the fact. I had the Neat Method come in and do the nursery. I worked a lot with Be Well for prenatal. But I didn’t post anything until she was born—maybe two weeks after. I’m just scratching the surface of mom content.

HOW HAS LITTLE MS. MORRISTOWN BEEN SO FAR?

I hit the baby jackpot! She sleeps throughout the night already! When we first brought her home, we had to wake her to feed her. We would have to set alarms, and then she would dream feed. Now she goes down at 10 and sleeps until around 7:30. And she’s a happy baby, very smiley, and very alert!

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO EXPERIENCING WITH HER OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS?

I’m excited for her personality to come out, for her to have a favorite toy, or a favorite color. Now that it’s nice out, I want her to experience the world. I took her to see the penguins at the Turtle Back Zoo, and you could see the awe in her face. So, I’m looking forward to her experiencing the world and me getting to watch.

“I hit the baby jackpot. She sleeps throughout the night already... she’s a happy baby, very smiley, and very alert!”

ANY LOCAL SPOTS YOU PLAN ON TAKING HER TO?

She’s already been to the Grand Café, Town Bar & Kitchen, South and Pine, and Tatte. We’re definitely going to take some of the mommy-and-me classes at Be Well. And when she’s older, I can’t wait for her to try dance classes, maybe Irish dance, because I’m Irish. And I’m looking forward to taking her to a show at MPAC. They have such amazing shows for kids.

I KNOW YOU MENTIONED YOU HAVE A RESCUE DOG NAMED MARS. WHAT WAS HIS REACTION WHEN YOU BROUGHT A NEW BABY HOME?

I fostered Mars during COVID through an organization called Furever Home for Dogs in Randolph. When I went to pick him up, everything was wrong with him. He had worms, kennel cough, mites, fur patches—he was a mess. He was so scared, and it broke my heart. I knew I had to get him back to health. I have no idea what happened to him during his first 12 weeks of life, but it clearly wasn’t good. He doesn’t always respond well to change. I was so stressed about him meeting the baby! I was thinking he would feel jealous or regress. Well, he was completely fine and pretty much ignored her. He sniffed her a little and just walked away, and that’s still what he does now! He’s the sweetest dog.

AND HOW WAS YOUR STEPSON WHEN HE MET HER?

He’s been a great big brother! We wanted to ease him into everything when we brought her home, and he just dove into this big brother role. He wanted to feed her and hold her. It’s really cute. She’s very lucky. They’re going to be really close, I can tell.

“There was no blueprint for what I did; a lot of it was figuring it out. I’m excited to show her that mommy works hard, and then she gets to do these really cool things.”

LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEW EXPERIENCES YOU’LL SHARE WITH YOUR DAUGHTER AND THE EVOLUTION OF MS. MORRISTOWN. WHAT KIND OF EXAMPLE DO YOU HOPE TO SHOW HER AS SHE GROWS UP?

The first thing that comes to my mind is a strong work ethic. That’s something I want for her. My mom was a single mom, and she was definitely working really hard. I saw her struggles and the tough decisions she had to make. So, my daughter is having a very different life in that aspect. But I want her to know that you don’t have to fit in a box. Forging your own path is what I’m excited for her to see. There was no blueprint for what I did. A lot of it was figuring it out as I went. I’m excited to show her that mommy works hard, and then she gets to do these really cool things.

PREPARING KIDS FOR PET PARENTHOOD

ST. HUBERTS HELPS FAMILIES WITH LITTLES FIND FUREVER FRIENDS

Few moments are as exciting for children as welcoming a new pet into the family, but creating a happy beginning for everyone requires patience and planning.

Experts say a successful adoption starts long before a family falls in love with a dog or cat. “Families can research breeds, involve children in selecting supplies, decide where the animal will sleep and eat, and discuss responsibilities such as walking and training,” says Sarah Sangree, Director of Community Engagement at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison.

St. Hubert’s sits on a sprawling campus with multiple buildings housing an adoption center, doggie day camp, pet store, and dog training school. For more than 85 years, the organization has placed thousands of animals—from dogs and cats to even mice—into caring homes. As part of the Humane Rescue Alliance, St. Hubert’s is the region’s largest animal rescue provider.

According to Sangree, the most important factor for any family is commitment. “First, make sure everyone is committed,” she says. “A pet is a ten to fifteen-year responsibility.”

For Tatiana Yastremski, St. Hubert’s Shelter Behavior Manager and a Certified Professional Dog Trainer, choosing the right dog for families with children involves much more than appearance. “The goal is to find a pet whose energy level matches the family’s. Some families enjoy energetic dogs; others prefer calmer animals. It’s about finding the right fit.”

Instead, she recommends visiting the shelter with an open mind and considering factors such as activity level, daily schedules, and lifestyle. “It begins with a family conversation,” Yastremski says. “Discuss what type of dog they want and what would fit their lifestyle. Families should come to the shelter together.”

Once a pet is selected, preparation at home becomes essential. Both experts emphasize the importance of giving animals their own safe space to decompress. “The most important thing is ensuring the animal has a safe space where it can retreat if needed,” Sangree says. “For dogs, that might be a crate or gated area. For cats, it could be a cat bed on a high shelf.”

While puppies are often the first choice for families, Sangree says older dogs can sometimes be a better fit. Adult dogs offer a clearer picture of temperament and energy level, making it easier to match a pet to a family’s lifestyle.

Preparing children is equally important. Yastremski encourages parents to consider their children’s ages and behaviors just as carefully as they evaluate a pet. “Toddlers may run, grab tails, or pull ears,” she explains. “Some dogs tolerate that behavior while others do not. Dogs have preferences just like people do.”

She also notes that puppies can be difficult companions for young children because they naturally nip, scratch, chase, and play roughly as they grow up.

For Yastremski, successful adoptions come down to research and realistic expectations. “Learn about dog behavior, understand the responsibilities involved, commit to training, and choose a dog whose personality and needs align with your family’s lifestyle,” she says. “A successful adoption is about finding the right match.”

A LITTLE DIRT Won’t Hurt

GROW IT GREEN TEACHES KIDS THE FRUITS OF GARDENING

ARTICLE BY ELLEN S. WILKOWE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY GROW IT GREEN

August is a last call for lazing at the Shore, making good on that camping trip, and sending thoughts of school out to sea. But as summer advances to the finish line, the harvest season is just getting started.

Local farms are flush with the fruits of their labor, and the parade of produce will march in step with the Fall. Think tomatoes, cucumber, zucchini, kale, and Swiss chard, to name just a few. Plus, a number of herbs to take for a zest drive.

Just ask Adrienne Novak, Development Manager of Grow it Green, an urban farm in Morristown, which is gearing up for its annual community-wide fall festival with a name as crisp as its produce: “AlFresco at the Farm.”

This free family event is scheduled for September 19th from 3:00-6:00 p.m. with a rain date of September 20th.

The festival will showcase live music, free food, flower crafts, caricature drawings, field games, and educational stations throughout the farm. The event will also feature a gazpacho throwdown featuring four Morristown chefs and local celebrity judges, including State Assemblywoman Marissa Sweeney and Superintendent Anne Mucci.

“It’s really about community building,” said Novak.

It’s also about the children in the community, the “hands in the dirt,” behind the crops, and the overwhelming perks of working the land and getting outdoors in general. Harvest season is the perfect opportunity to get kids in the garden to see the results of their hard work. Growing your own food is a pretty spectacular reward.

A true grassroots venture, the one-acre Urban Farm is situated in the back of the Lafayette Learning Center on Hazel Street, providing students instant access to hands-on learning both in and out of the classroom. The organization also maintains the Early Street Community Garden and a greenhouse for year-round growing on the campus of Saint Elizabeth University.

To date, the Urban Farm has served thousands of youths across the Morris School District and neighboring towns, including some private and charter schools.

“Some kids may not have backyards to grow food or have never seen a live chicken,” said Farm Education Manager Kim Haupt, a Grow it Green alum, former intern, and volunteer. Yes, there are chickens, and even they play their part.

From egg production to composting, and at the very least, entertaining the younger children.

miraculously appear in a plastic bag in a supermarket,” said Novak. A field trip to the farm proves just the opposite, and a taste test of ripeready produce may have the power to turn even the most vegetable-averse minds. “I’ll have kids say, ‘I don’t like vegetables, but I like these vegetables,’” Haupt explained.

Grow it Green incorporates sustainable and regenerative farming and pairs it with hands-on education that returns kids to the outdoors.

“Harvest season is the perfect opportunity to get kids in the garden to see the results of their hard work.”

Haupt, a.k.a. “Farmer Kim,” oversees the farmto-school curriculum alongside her colleague, “Farmer Shaun (Ananko).” The age-appropriate programming engages children in grades preK-12 in farming practices and allows them to take ownership of the seeds they sow and watch them grow in real time from the classroom to their school’s own garden.

The immersion also introduces them to the food production process. “Food doesn’t

The return on investment is well-documented. According to the National Library of Medicine, young children who interact with nature are more likely to be engaged with natural places and grow into active adults, often with a better quality of life. Interacting with nature also comes with mental health benefits such as higher self-esteem, a boost to mood, and resilience.

In an increasingly virtual and sedentary world, free-range outdoor exploration has seemingly gotten lost in the shuffle. The hands-in-the-land concept of Grow it Green is changing that, one child and one vegetable at a time.  Along with a PSA: “A little dirt won’t hurt.”

Hopefully, the grown-ups will agree.

the little moments I want to hold onto before summer ends

ONE MORE POOL DAY

Every summer starts the same way—the kids get out of school, and I immediately start thinking about all the memories I want to make before September rolls around.

Some of those memories are the big ones. Family trips. Fun day trips. The things we’ve planned and looked forward to, but if I’m being honest? When I picture summer ending, those aren’t always the moments that come to mind.

I think about wet bathing suits hanging over the deck railing. Popsicles for breakfast. S’mores after dinner. Hearing five kids laughing outside while I look out the kitchen window

I’ve learned that the magic isn’t only found in the big moments. Sometimes it’s just found in having nowhere to be.

One of my favorite traditions is our annual trip to Wildwood!

Kieran grew up going there every summer. When we started dating in 2007, I also started going. Back then, that was our “big” vacation. We didn’t think much about it. We were just two teenagers going down the shore.

Now we’re fortunate enough to take our kids on bigger trips, but every year we still find ourselves back in Wildwood, and the older I get, the more I realize why.

It’s not really about the destination. It’s about the tradition. It’s about giving our kids something they’ll remember year after year, just like we do.

Right now, I see the school year coming. The backpacks will come back out. The alarms will start going off again. Life will get very busy.

But for now? I’m holding on tight.

One more pool day. One more late bedtime. One more movie night. One more family walk. One more chance to hear, “Mommy, come jump on the trampoline with us!”

The school year will be here soon enough. Until then, I’ll be soaking up every last bit of summer!

And I’d love to hear from you! Send me a message and tell me your family’s favorite end-of-summer tradition or activity. Maybe I’ll add it to our bucket list :)

Building Resilience for Back-to-School Success

Parenting Coach and Founder of Guided Parenting Support (GPS®) talks calming fears and reducing anxiety

Every August, the calendar flips, and the nerves kick in—not just for kids, but for the parents watching them navigate new classes, new schools, and new expectations. Backto-school season is a reminder that once they head out that door, what happens next is largely out of your hands. The most powerful thing you can do for your children and teens is support their resilience in everyday moments, so they’re better prepared for life’s uncertainties.

Here are three areas where parents can proactively set their kids and teens up for success:

1. OVERALL HEALTHY HABITS SUPPORT OUR BODY BUDGETS— AND THEREFORE OUR ABILITY TO MANAGE STRESS.

This is the platform on which all resilience is developed. When our nervous systems are regulated, we have more bandwidth to be flexible in the face of change. Think of it like a guitar string: when it’s under too much tension, the slightest flick will cause it to snap. When it’s tuned just right, it can flex under pressure and still make beautiful music. Getting enough high-quality sleep, nutritious food, lots of joyful movement, and unstructured downtime (including child-led play) will put your kids in the right physical and mental states to better roll with the punches. And when stress does spike? Taking a few deep, slow breaths, being wrapped in a

warm hug from a trusted adult, or having a good laugh over something playful and silly can de-escalate a difficult moment fast. The more practice that growing brains get at co-regulating with dependable adults—and then self-regulating—the better equipped they’ll be to face challenges with optimism and resilience.

2. FEELING CAPABLE AND VALUED CONTRIBUTES TO CONFIDENCE.

Trust your kids to be as actively involved in all aspects of the household as possible, given their ages and skill levels. Making lunches, choosing clothes, packing backpacks, helping with family chores, and having input on scheduling and meal plans: all these help children build skills, develop trust in their own ability to do hard things, and know that their contributions matter. Being of service to others gets us out of our own heads, and having a sense of purpose contributes to resilience. Brainstorm ways your

Kate Garzón, M.Ed., owner of GPS

family can give back to the community based on your skills and interests—and let your kids take the lead wherever possible.

3.

HAVING TRUSTED ADULTS IN THEIR CORNER IS ONE OF THE MOST PROTECTIVE FACTORS FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS.

Letting your children know you’re there and ready to listen whenever they want to talk is huge because it validates their thoughts and feelings. Ask what’s on their mind, and based on their responses, problem-solve solutions together. Worried about getting lost at a new school? Concerned that the classes will be too hard? Dreading not having anyone to sit with at lunch? It doesn’t matter whether it’s a “realistic”

concern… if it feels real to a child or teen, it’s worth naming it and talking through potential options. Just like athletes using visualization before a big game, our brains can practice alternative strategies, so when the moment arrives, your child already knows they can handle it.

Many parents want to control the variables—because when you can manage the circumstances, you can protect your children from whatever comes next. Since that’s not the way the world works, supporting your children’s resilience is a strategy that will serve them well as they grow, not just this school year, but through every transition and challenge ahead.

TREY & KATIE KENNEDY

ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.

Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.

Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.”

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.

After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”

The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

Trey and Katie talk about marriage, parenting, and the moments that don’t make the Instagram feed.

Watch or listen to the full conversation wherever you get your podcasts.
