LIFESTYLE LETTER

This Year, We Choose Wellness

January 2026 PUBLISHER

Jake Slowinski | jake.slowinski@citylifestyle.com CO-PUBLISHER

Happy New Year, Greater Long Branch! This time of year always makes me pause and take stock of where I am and what I want for the months ahead. For a lot of people, that means resolutions. For me? Not so much. I’ve learned I’m better off skipping the sweeping declarations and sticking to small, steady choices—the kind that feel realistic in a house with four daughters, a busy home and a to-do list that somehow multiplies overnight. That idea of choosing well—not perfectly, not dramatically, just intentionally— feels especially fitting as we step into our Health & Wellness Issue. January can feel a bit long and a bit cold, so this edition is here to bring energy, warmth and inspiration as we ease into the new year. We’re starting with a story that embodies strength, longevity and smart movement. Turn to page 16 for Building Strength, Preventing Injury, and Empowering Every Athlete, our cover feature on Artemis Select in Oceanport. Founder Rolland Cheng brings decades of corrective exercise and performance experience to his personalized training approach, helping everyone—from first-time exercisers to seasoned athletes—move better and stay stronger for life. You’ll also find Winter Wellness Getaway, a sun-soaked trip to St. Maarten that brings plenty of warmth to these colder months. From beachside dinners to snorkeling adventures and cultural stops, it’s an invitation to dream big about your next wellness escape. This issue marks something special for us: the launch of the Greater Long Branch City Lifestyle Readers’ Choice Awards. Each month, we’ll roll out new categories for you to vote on, celebrating the people, places and businesses shaping our community. Turn to page 12 to see our very first winners, and follow @GreaterLongBranchCityLifestyle to stay in the loop on what’s coming next. Here’s to a year of clarity, momentum and choices that feel good—one steady step at a time. Thanks for beginning 2026 with us.

STRONGER, SA FER , BET TER . Inside Artemis Select with Rolland Cheng

At Artemis Select in Oceanport, the focus isn’t just on fitness—it’s on function, longevity, and empowerment. Founded by Rolland Cheng, NASM Master Trainer, Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES), and Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES), the studio combines individualized programming with a community-driven approach that welcomes everyone from elite athletes to first-time exercisers. Rolland brings two decades of experience to his work, including service as a Master Fitness Trainer for the U.S. Army, where

he helps soldiers maintain peak physical readiness and prevent injury. His expertise bridges the gap between rehabilitation and performance, working closely with local physical therapists to ensure clients transition safely from recovery to active training. “What we do is really about helping people move better and live better,” Rolland says. “We look at where each person is starting, identify any imbalances or weaknesses, and design programs that are specific to their needs and goals.”

At Artemis Select, every member receives a personalized training plan—far from the cookie-cutter model of large gyms. Sessions are small, allowing trainers to correct form, adapt movements, and keep workouts safe and effective. The studio also utilizes InBody scanning technology, giving clients measurable insight into their progress and helping them break through plateaus with science-backed adjustments. Rolland’s client base is diverse—ranging from marathoners and newlyweds getting ready for their big day to seniors in their 70s, 80s, and even 90s aiming to preserve strength and independence. “For many of my older clients, it’s about maintaining bone density, balance, and the ability to keep doing the things they love—whether that’s golf, skiing, or playing with grandkids,” he says. He’s also passionate about women’s health, noting that exercise programs should reflect the unique physiological and hormonal factors that affect women at different stages of life. “There’s not enough tailored information out there for women,” Rolland says. “Sometimes it’s as simple as programming around the

Looking ahead, Rolland hopes Artemis Select will continue to grow as a hub for intelligent, sustainable training in Monmouth County. “Our goal is to make high-level training accessible,” he says. “We want to see a strong, healthy community—people who move better, feel better, and stay active for life.” For more information visit artemisselect.fit. WINTER Wellness GETAWAY Sunshine, Culture, and Culinary Bliss in St. Maarten ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY ST. MAARTEN TOURISM BUREAU

Trade snow boots for sandals and airport chaos for Caribbean calm—because winter is better spent in St. Maarten, the friendly island where wellness, flavor and fun collide. From the moment we landed at Princess Juliana International Airport, greeted by warm smiles (and warmer air), the stress of deadlines and frozen mornings melted away. St. Maarten may only be 37 square miles, but this little island packs enough adventure, indulgence and culture to fill an entire season of travel daydreams.

DAY ONE: WELCOME TO PARADISE

Our home base for the week was Oyster Bay Beach Resort, a laid-back luxury retreat perched between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. After check-in, we kicked things off the right way—with welcome cocktails at sunset, followed by dinner at Big Fish, an elegant coastal restaurant that fuses South Beach glamour with island soul. The fresh snapper and coconut mojitos alone were worth the flight.

DAY TWO: BARBECUE, BOATS AND BEACH THRILLS

Morning began with breakfast overlooking the ocean. By lunchtime, we were at Captain’s Rib Shack, one of St. Maarten’s famous “Lolos”—open-air roadside eateries serving up smoky, soulful barbecue. Locals say it’s the best on the island, and after one bite of their ribs, we believed them.

22

T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TRAV E L

Next up was pure adrenaline: a Rhino Safari Tour, where we steered our own mini boats along the island’s coast to secluded Happy Bay Beach. The turquoise water begged for snorkeling, and between the coral, sea turtles and laughter, we lost all sense of time. We capped the day with dinner and drinks at Tortuga (if you watch Below Deck, you’ll recognize it!), a beachfront spot at Maho Beach where planes roar overhead as you sip your rum punch—an only-in-St.-Maarten thrill that never gets old. DAY THREE: ST. BARTHS—LUXE LIVING, ISLAND STYLE

Thanks to St. Maarten’s perfect location (nicknamed the Crossroads of the Caribbean), hopping to nearby St. Barths was a breeze. After a scenic ferry ride, we explored Gustavia’s chic boutiques and harbor cafés before heading to La Guérite Beach—a slice of heaven serving Mediterranean-Caribbean fusion under the palms. Chef Yiannis Kioroglou’s curated menu was fresh, vibrant and impossibly photogenic. After a sun-soaked afternoon, we ferried back to St. Maarten for dinner at Infinity Restaurant, where candlelight, sea breezes and local seafood made for a dreamlike end to the day.

DAY FOUR: CULTURE, CARNIVAL AND COCKTAILS

No trip is complete without a dose of local flavor— and Philipsburg, the colorful capital, delivered in full technicolor. We strolled the lively boardwalk, admired sprawling murals from the island’s post-pandemic art renaissance and stopped by We Culture SXM, an immersive museum celebrating Carnival’s costumes, music and heartbeat. Later, we traded history for happy hour at Balaou Floating Bar—yes, it’s literally a bar on the water— where island rhythms, cocktails and sunset views reminded us that wellness isn’t always yoga mats and meditation. Sometimes, it’s dancing barefoot on a floating deck with new friends. Dinner at Le Piment, a French bistro in Orient Bay Village, brought the night full circle with laughter, wine and perfectly seared seafood.

DAY FIVE: UNTIL NEXT TIME

Our final morning was slow and sweet—a quiet breakfast on the terrace, one last swim in Oyster Bay’s infinity pool and a reluctant glance at flight itineraries. As our plane took off over the sparkling coastline, one thing was clear: St. Maarten is more than a tropical escape—it’s a state of mind. A place where art, food, adventure and hospitality blend effortlessly, and where you leave feeling lighter than when you arrived. This winter, skip the snow. Let St. Maarten warm your body, your soul and your sense of wonder.

Griffy’s Organics continues to promote health and wellness by fueling the community with clean, functional ingredients

“We have worked hard to create a place where people can find hope Griffy’s Organics – Colts Neck, NJ

When it comes to health and wellness, Avry and Chris Griffin have always believed in keeping things real, clean, and community-driven. As first cousins, and Founder and Co-Founder of Griffy’s Organics, their journey from local entrepreneurs to wellness advocates is rooted in making healthy living accessible for everyone. A beacon in the community since 2019, Griffy’s Organics began as a free health and nutrition blog designed to help people educate themselves and explore alternatives to prescription medicine. From there, the brand expanded into wellness coaching and nutrition consultations, and eventually took its work brick-and-mortar with the opening of its first shop in Long Branch in 2021. The team at Griffy’s works hard every day to ensure each ingredient they use is the best for their customers. From Aronia berries grown locally in Hopewell, New Jersey, to spirulina, turmeric, and other inflammation-fighting staples, each component of their recipes is carefully sourced, studied and considered. Whether it’s promoting circulation, calming inflammation, or supporting gut health, Griffy’s recipes are built on research and results. “We’ve heard feedback about how the juices have helped people manage a variety of conditions including chronic conditions like arthritis and autoimmune challenges, to digestive issues and even cancer,” says Avry Griffin, Founder of Griffy’s Organics. “Hearing that our products are making a difference keeps us going.” When sourcing ingredients, the team at Griffy’s pays close attention to where their product is coming from, referencing the Dirty Dozen list, researching digestive enzymes made in the U.S., and seeking out growers who uphold organic practices. Some of Griffy’s key ingredients include: • Raw Cane Juice: Griffy’s cold-presses raw sugar cane, a clean, mineral-rich and natural sweetener that delivers pure energy without the crash. • Sea Moss Gel: Sourced from the volcanic waters of Saint Vincent; mineral-rich, fueling immunity, energy, and daily vitality.

and healthier ways to live, and we’re happy that Griffy’s has become that in our communities.” - Avry Griffin

• Aronia Berries: Locally grown in Hopewell, New Jersey; improves heart health and a boosted immune system. • Spirulina: Promotes detoxification, boosts energy, supports hydration and is good for joints. • Beet Root: Supports blood flow, immunity, circulation and energy. • Turmeric: Supports cognition and addresses inflammation. Griffy’s also offers personalized health consultations directly with Chris, Co-Founder and Head of Nutrition, who provides one-on-one guidance and custom plans tailored to individual needs. Many of these sessions support people navigating serious health challenges. The Griffy’s team is kept well-informed through weekly meetings and ongoing educational training, ensuring that everyone, whether they are a new hire or seasoned staff, understands the science and purpose behind each product, and how to best guide their customers. “We have worked hard to create a place where people can find hope and healthier ways to live, and we’re happy that Griffy’s has become that in our communities,” continued Avry. Griffy’s Organics has storefronts in Long Branch, Asbury Park, Red Bank and Colts Neck. THE DOCTOR WHO Actually Listens

Dr. Melissa Blackburn

AT THE MODERN WOMAN IN TINTON FALLS, DR. MELISSA BLACKBURN IS REDEFINING WOMEN’S HEALTHCARE WITH TIME, EMPATHY, AND TOTAL-BODY WELLNESS. ARTICLE BY CAROLINE FANNING PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE MODERN WOMAN

M UST SE E | HEALTH + W ELLN E SS

Dr. Melissa Blackburn

Dr. Melissa Blackburn wants to know everything about you. How old was your mother when she was diagnosed with cancer? Did her sister or brother or parents ever have it too? Do you have kids—or do you want them? Why did you like (or not) your last gynecologist or primary care physician? What does the best version of yourself look like, regardless of time, money or constraints? And, by the way, what kind of time do you have at your disposal, and what do you feel is the most important thing you do to take care of yourself right now? She’s the kind of doctor you keep—and it’s no surprise that many of her patients follow her from corporate providers like RWJBarnabas Health and Hackensack Meridian Health to The Modern Woman, her new concierge medical practice in Tinton Falls. Tucked inside The Atrium on Gilbert Street (if you pass the stately red barn-like New Shrewsbury Racquet Club, you’ve gone too far), The Modern Woman represents a new era of women’s health care—one rooted in time, trust and truly personalized attention. A New Model for Modern Medicine The Modern Woman is a concierge medical practice, meaning patients pay for services as they would with any health care provider, in addition to an annual membership fee that allows Dr. Blackburn to take on fewer patients and spend more time with each one. The result: longer, more meaningful appointments, genuine connection and an emphasis on prevention rather than reaction. “I’m not really helping women as much as I want to,” Blackburn says of her years working in corporate medicine, a system built on efficiency over empathy. “Visits are quick, impersonal and don’t leave space for the conversations that really matter. I want to talk about fitness, nutrition and routines—the things that influence women’s overall well-being.”

At The Modern Woman, she’s finally able to do just that. Patients receive the same care they would from a standard gynecologist—pap smears, breast exams and mammograms—but with a comprehensive focus on mind-body connection and long-term health. The practice offers customized and comprehensive bloodwork panels, the latest innovations in preventive health, as well as referral services to local nutritionists, dietitians and trainers. “I don’t even consider myself just a gynecologist,” she says, though she is board-certified and performs all traditional procedures. “I see myself as a preventive, comprehensive health care doctor.”

Her philosophy is grounded in her background. Blackburn grows up in Hollywood, Florida, and attends Florida State University on a full scholarship, majoring in exercise physiology. Her love for understanding the human body leads her to Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she graduates summa cum laude. She chooses osteopathic medicine for its holistic philosophy—viewing the body as an interconnected unit rather than separate organ systems. After completing her OB/GYN residency at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, Blackburn settles in New Jersey, where she falls in love with both the community and the women she now serves. Her passion for nutrition, exercise and preventive medicine remains central to her practice today.

“It’s going to be a feeling of ‘This is where I can talk about my health. This is where I can talk about my family. This is where I can talk about mental health things.”

Where Expertise Meets Empowerment Black bu r n’s approach blends medical precision with a holistic perspective. Her practice provides not only general gynecology and preventive care, but also hormone replacement therapy, peptide therapy, medical weight management and aesthetic services such as Morpheus8 face and body treatments, neurotoxin injections and laser therapies for hair removal and skin rejuvenation. Patients can also receive pelvic floor strengthening, preconception and contraception counseling, and support for post-childbirth recovery and perimenopause transitions. “At The Modern Woman, your care is never rushed,” Blackburn says. “We create space for meaningful conversations, thoughtful evaluations and personalized treatment plans. You’re not just another patient on the schedule—you’re a woman with a story, a voice and a body that deserves to be supported in every way.”

A New Standard of Women’s Care Step into The Modern Woman, and you notice the difference immediately. There’s no line at the counter. You don’t sit in a crowded waiting room for an hour past your appointment. Instead, you slip into a plush robe—not a paper gown—and meet with Blackburn in a serene, spa-like environment. A bottle of San Pellegrino waits nearby as you discuss your health history, life goals and personal well-being. Most visits last close to an hour, giving patients time to talk openly about their health and ask questions they may have held back elsewhere. “It’s a space where women can finally say, ‘This is where I can talk about my health, my family, my mental well-being,’” Blackburn says. “It’s an inviting environment where you feel seen and heard.”

— Dr. Melissa Blackburn

Patients say the experience is transformative. Some rave about the laser hair removal that changes their confidence before bikini season. Others share how pelvic floor therapy helps them recover from incontinence issues after childbirth. Many credit peptide or hormone therapy for renewed energy, balanced mood or faster recovery from old injuries. The details of the treatments vary, but one common refrain echoes through every testimonial: “I’ve never felt more comfortable going to the doctor.” Medicine, as It Should Be For Blackburn, that comfort is not just a luxury—it’s essential. “When women feel comfortable, they’re more likely to share the details that help me help them,” she says. “It’s about creating relationships where we can focus on prevention and total-body wellness, not just symptom management.” Her patients’ loyalty speaks volumes. Many follow her from her previous corporate practices to The Modern Woman because they trust her care, her candor and her commitment. As the practice grows, Blackburn envisions The Modern Woman as a sanctuary for every stage of life—a place where teenagers can learn about their bodies without fear or shame, where mothers can navigate postpartum and menopause transitions and where women of every age can feel empowered, educated and prioritized. At its heart, The Modern Woman is not just a medical office. It’s a movement toward the future of medicine—not only a practitioner who listens, honors time and champions women’s voices, but who is constantly learning and implementing the newest science in women’s health, preventive medicine and metabolism. Medicine. As it should be.

Good Happens

Here

Monmouth County is home to countless organizations dedicated to lifting up and supporting their neighbors. Here are three nonprofits—Family & Children’s Services, The Center in Asbury Park, and Mercy Center— making a lasting difference in the community.

FAMILY & CHILDREN’S SERVICES

For more than a century, Family & Children’s Services (FCS) has been a steady force in Monmouth County, helping individuals and families navigate life’s most challenging moments. The agency was founded in 1909 after local businessmen witnessed children scrambling for toys tossed from a holiday

truck. What began as a grassroots effort to provide food, coal and clothing quickly evolved into one of New Jersey’s most trusted private social service agencies. Today, FCS serves thousands of residents through 13 programs that strengthen, protect and preserve the dignity of those they serve, particularly seniors and adults with disabilities. From Adult Protective Services—which intervenes when vulnerable adults face abuse or neglect—to home care programs that allow people to remain safely in their homes, FCS provides critical and often life-saving support. The agency also helps seniors manage the daily challenges of living independently by installing home safety features, coordinating caregivers and offering financial management services for those unable to handle their own bills. An innovative initiative even compensates family members serving as caregivers, supporting both the caregiver and the person receiving care. As the cost of living rises, FCS has expanded its efforts with a Food Insecurity Program launched in partnership with Lunch Break and Fulfill. The initiative delivers nutritious meals directly to clients’ homes. “Our goal is simple: to bring what people need to them, so no one feels alone or forgotten in their own home,” says CEO Louis Schwarcz. Volunteers are at the heart of FCS’s mission. Through its AmeriCorps Seniors program, adults 55 and older can participate in meaningful volunteer roles that keep them active in the community. The Reading Buddies program, serving about 1,200 students in 12 schools, advances early literacy and builds confidence in young readers. Seasonal efforts like Operation Sleighbells provide gifts and essentials to more than 400 families and 1,000 children each year, with support from local businesses and community sponsors. Looking ahead, FCS plans to strengthen senior-focused programs, expand partnerships and increase awareness so more residents know where to turn when crisis strikes. THE CENTER IN ASBURY PARK

During the height of the AIDS epidemic in 1992, stigma and fear left people living with HIV isolated and unsupported. In response, Father Bob Keating and the local faith-based community founded The Center in Asbury Park. What began as a small space offering hot meals, companionship and clothing soon became a lifeline for individuals living with HIV across Monmouth and Ocean counties. Over the past three decades, The Center has grown while staying true to its mission of compassion, dignity and stability. One of its cornerstone programs is Center House, which opened in 2006. This permanent supportive housing program provides stability for up to 25 residents, many of whom have lived there for more than a decade. The Center also operates four transitional housing units in Asbury Park, offering steppingstones toward long-term independence. Daily support remains essential. Clients can stop in for snacks, take-home meals and access to showers—a service increasingly in demand. The Center’s housing-first approach ensures that once individuals have a safe place to live, staff and volunteers can help address additional needs. Referrals come through clinics and partner agencies, while trained housing navigators guide placements. “There is no better feeling than having the safety of a home,” says Charlie, a resident. Partnerships are essential to The Center’s impact. Preferred Behavioral Health provides in-house mental health services, while Interfaith Neighbors supplies fresh local produce from Fernbrook Farms. Practical supports— such as hygiene supplies and laundry cards—help clients meet everyday needs. The Center remains volunteer-driven. Volunteers help at the front desk, prepare meals and assist at the thrift store on Main Street in Belmar. They also help power events like the annual spring gala and the New Jersey AIDS Walk. Today, The Center continues to evaluate community needs and adapt its services to meet them. To learn more or get involved, visit thecenterinap.org.

118,000 people last year, and Sisters Academy of New Jersey, a tuition-free school for girls. Each program is designed to help families achieve long-term stability and break cycles of poverty. Today, the organization is facing demand unlike anything since the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The sudden cancellation of essential safety-net programs and loss of government paychecks have pushed many working families into crisis. Ana, a mother who was managing “just barely,” now relies on the pantry as cuts to WIC and SNAP benefits force impossible choices between paying rent and buying food. Pantry visits have surged 35% in the last quarter. “The sudden cancellation of essential government safety-net programs and the loss of regular paychecks have created a situation where need has risen to the level we experienced during the peak of COVID,” says Executive Director Kim Guadagno. “Our neighbors are making impossible choices between paying rent and buying food. Mercy Center is the lifeline preventing hundreds of families from spiraling into crisis.” Winter poses additional challenges, as families face dangerous decisions between heat and groceries. Community support remains critical. Mercy Center is also planning its next chapter: Under One Roof, a major initiative to bring all programs into a single, modern facility. A generous donor enabled the purchase of the former Walgreens on Main Street, with renovation plans underway as funding allows. Volunteers and donors remain central to Mercy Center’s work. For more information or to get involved, visit mercycenternj.org or email fooddrives@mercycenternj.org.

MERCY CENTER IN ASBURY PARK

In 1986, inspired by the “walking nuns” of founder Sister Catherine McAuley, the Sisters of Mercy began delivering groceries to struggling families in Asbury Park. That small act of service has since grown into Mercy Center—a vital institution providing support across six New Jersey counties. Mercy Center operates a full-time Family Resource Center, a stigma-free choice pantry that served more than

STOCK Ingredients: 5–6 pounds chicken or turkey bones (necks, feet and scraps included; store-bought stock works too) • Carrot, onion, celery, leek • Thyme, rosemary, sage • Parsley • Bay leaf • ½ teaspoon white peppercorns

Instructions: Place bones in a large pot, cover with cold water, and bring to a boil. Skim the foam, then add the vegetables and herbs. Reduce to a simmer and cook uncovered for 2–3 hours, skimming occasionally. Strain into a clean bowl and cool. Refrigerate if making ahead and remove the fat layer before using.

Marilyn’s Roasted Turkey Matzo Ball Soup A cozy, heritage-inspired twist on a classic, perfect for winter nights.

MATZO BALLS Ingredients: Garlic oil • Chopped parsley and basil • 1 cup boiling water • Salt and pepper • 2 eggs, separated • 1 cup matzo meal • Finely chopped celery, garlic and grilled onion

Instructions: Finely chop the seasonings and sauté in garlic oil until translucent. Add boiling water and let cool slightly. Stir in matzo meal and beaten yolks, then fold in whipped egg whites. Form into small balls and simmer in boiling stock or salted water for about 30 minutes, until puffed and tender.

ROASTED TURKEY Ingredients: ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARILYN SCHLOSSBACH I grew up in a Jewish home—my father was Jewish and my mother converted—so traditional Jewish cooking was always part of our family table. Still, I didn’t always connect with the classic versions of certain dishes. As I got older, I began adapting those recipes to suit my own tastes. This soup became a personal favorite, especially because it’s a wonderful way to use leftover chicken or turkey bones. Revisiting it recently, as I’ve been reconnecting with my heritage, felt like returning to a meaningful part of myself.

To Serve: Ladle the soup into bowls, add one or two matzo balls and finish with fresh parsley. This dish is featured in my cookbook, Feed This Community, available at OshinLove.com. The book includes eleven chapters dedicated to eleven charities— each inspired by a mission, a story and a community I love.
