As we move deeper into a New Year and reflect on the achievements of the past one, so many of our community organizations stand out. "From the Heart" describes so many of our wonderful neighbors perfectly. The genuine caring of those who serve the elderly and the disadvantaged is more than a bright spot in our community. Of course, Valentine's Day also gives us a renewed reason to be kind to our neighbors and to make an extra effort for those closest to us. May it be sweet for you in deepened personal relationships and in perhaps a few goodies too. Among the many truly GRAND things happening in our community "From the Heart", we find local talent and craft, global brands and powerful innovations right here in Grand Junction. (Did you know that 3-D printing was invented right here?) What a remarkable community! As we make our way through the coldest time of the year and find productive things to do indoors, one of my personal favorites is restocking fishing flies for the coming Spring. May your own "cabin fever" projects bring out the best in your creativity and skills, leaving you with the fulfillment of what you create. May you also find some fun in the Valentine's Day nudge to make someone special to you, feel loved. SCOT T FAIRBANKS, PUBLISHER @GRANDJUNCTIONLIFEST YLE

Getting to Know A Local Artist JOSHUA SCOTT
ARTICLE BY GJ LIFESTYLE STAFF/JOSHUA SCOTT PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOSHUA SCOTT
WHAT GOT YOU STARTED WITH PHOTOGRAPHY? I started taking photos when I was 8 or 9. We were on a family vacation in Aspen at the John Denver Sanctuary, and I saw a doe drinking by a snowy lake. I snapped a photo with a disposable camera, and it came out so amazing that my mom had it painted on an antique metal milk can. I think that's when I knew it was my calling. I actually learned on film and in the darkroom, so that ages me a little. I joined the yearbook team for three years in high school as the photographer on campus. In 2001, I went to Colorado Mountain College in Glenwood Springs and took photography classes with some of the best photographers in the industry. My professor Klaus Kocher said I had the best eye in the class, which really boosted my confidence, and I aced the class.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE STYLE OF PHOTOGRAPHY? Landscape photography is my favorite due to the relaxing and calming vibes of mother nature. Whenever I'm in the mountains or the landscapes we call home, I'm in my element. Doing portraits in these beautiful landscapes really is amazing.
WHAT GIVES YOU INSPIRATION FOR YOUR WORK?
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO WHEN YOU AREN’T TAKING PHOTOS?
The beautiful region we live in truly inspires the photos I take. Colorado has been home since 2001, and I have discovered the most breathtaking backdrops and landscapes imaginable. The Colorado National Monument & the Grand Mesa are huge inspirations. The clients and families I work for also inspire me with their loving stories. I see their love for each other and want to make that shine naturally..
I love to hike and kayak all over the region. I also enjoy taking little trips to Glenwood Springs, Steamboat Springs, or wherever I feel like at the moment. I love being so close to all these fantastic towns and getting to experience the Colorado Lifestyle and share my adventures via social media. I also enjoy shopping locally and supporting the local community any way I can.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE LOCAL ARTIST?
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE COMING YEAR?
Oh, this is a tough one. I have three that tie for favorite: Lily Cain Studio, Lori Ruiz Watercolor, and Heidi Ruckman Art. They are all so talented with watercolor, and I own 10+ pieces from each.
I really want to give back to the community more through my photography and donate to charity events or silent auctions. This is a fantastic community; the people are so rad, so giving back is a must in my eyes.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT OUR VALLEY?
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE LOCAL EVENT?
John Otto's trail on the Colorado National Monument. It's a great place to think and just take it all in.
Country Jam, of course. I'm a country boy at heart and have gone for years. I love that they let me bring in my camera to capture the event last year and share it with Grand Junction Lifestyle Magazine. I was one of three on-site cameras and loved zooming in on the artists and fun happenings all weekend.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PLACE TO TAKE PHOTOS IN THE VALLEY? It's so hard to pick just one spot. I feel every part of the Grand Valley is beautiful in its own way. The location I shot today is my favorite answer to give when people ask.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE LOCAL RESTAURANT? Devil's Kitchen on CMU Campus for the incredible views CONTINUED >

of the Grand Valley, excellent service, and delicious creations. It's a must for all locals and visitors and great for date nights or special occasions.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE THAT WANT TO START GETTING INTO PHOTOGRAPHY? My biggest tip is to shoot during "Golden Hour" (first hour after sunrise and last hour before sunset). It's my favorite time of day to shoot because the natural light is even, and magical things can happen with your images. Also, always have a backup SD card just in case, and a second charged battery too.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO “MAKE” WITH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY? I like to create or evoke emotions from people that view my landscapes or family and wedding photos. I want candid moments that speak to them and create a story they can relive in their hearts and minds when they see the image. As Ansel Adams said, "You don't take a photograph; you make it." So making those emotions come out with what I capture is my goal.
16
A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | ARTS + CULTURE
BLACK AND WHITE OR COLOR PHOTOS? The colors are always so magical in this region, but sometimes black and white can make a stronger impression and are always timeless, so it's normal for me to throw in black & white for free with senior portraits or for couples and weddings.
PINEAPPLE ON PIZZA? Heck yes, but it must have Jalapenos paired with it.

A BUBBLE, BEE, AND CREATIVELY ENGINEERED BOUTIQUE
Ohhh, Honey!
ARTICLE BY CLOE OLMSTEAD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY C. W. MORGAN
Have you discovered Hartmann Farmhouse located on the roundabout in the Redlands in the old bank building? If not, it is a treasure you will love to explore. Dara and David Hartmann met during Dara’s last semester at the South Dakota School of Mines. She was studying Chemical Engineering and David was studying Civil Engineering. Two years later, they were married and searching for jobs in their chosen fields. Their job search landed them here in Grand Junction. They report that the Grand Valley instantly felt like home. They love the community and the good schools here. Their 3 children take after them and all have impressive stories. Somewhere along the way, David was introduced to beekeeping by a neighbor. He enjoyed learning all he could from that neighbor, as well as diving into other resources, such as the local beekeeping guild, to learn more. Several years ago, Dara had the opportunity to not need to work and was able to take a serious look at how she wanted to spend her time. One
day, David came to her with a hunk of wax from the beehive. It seemed to her a pity to toss it out after watching all the work the bees did to create it. She learned how to make lip balm, and truly enjoyed the experience. It had so many similarities to being back in the lab. She began experimenting with lip balms and lotions. She would tweak the recipe and have friends try them out. Her friends gave her honest feedback and she continued to tweak the recipes until she got them just right. With this newfound love, Dara opened Hartmann Farmhouse, a Bubble and Bee Boutique. She sells her cosmetics, but also local raw honey, clothing, home decor, and local art. They even have a Coffee Bar. She is looking forward to increasing her line of shampoo bars this year and hopes to be able to open an ice cream shop this year as well. The store has a sidewalk all the way to it, and they have a vision of it being a family-friendly shop that families can walk or bike to and just enjoy being together.

Pickleball For All BUILDING PICKLEBALL IN OUR COMMUNITY
ARTICLE BY GJ LIFESTYLE STAFF PHOTOGRAPHY BY GJ LIFESTYLE STAFF/KEVIN DECKER
Have you boarded the Pickleball train? I’ll admit, I only recently began exploring the world of Pickleball, but I kind of wish I had learned about it years ago. There is a reason why it is such a fast-growing sport. And while it may seem like a fad, the simple rules, low amount of gear, and ease of play, I expect this is a sport that is here to stay. Pickleball falls somewhere between tennis and ping-pong. Pickleball is played on a court similar in size to a Badminton court but uses a 36-inch tall net. It is played with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes (somewhat similar to a Wiffle ball). There is a non-volley zone that is called “The Kitchen”. If you find yourself in The Kitchen just don’t make contact with the kitchen line while volleying the ball or your opponent receives a point. After a serve is made diagonally, the game looks a lot like tennis or ping pong with the ball going back and forth between players. If you want more information, just stop by one of the local courts and jump right into the fun. After watching tournaments and seeing people of all ages playing Pickleball, it is easy to see why this sport has gotten so popular, especially in our valley. Pickleball started in our valley around 2009 with a modified tennis court and about 25 people who were actively pursuing the sport. Today, Grand Junction Parks & Recreation has fourteen outdoor courts, and seven indoor courts, with additional construction for twelve outdoor courts at Lincoln Park, expected to be completed by June of this year. This number

of active players has grown just as impressively. According to westernslopepickleballclub.com, there are around 600 members of the club currently. That's really awesome! In fact, one local has really taken to the sport and is putting Grand Junction on the map for Pickleball. You may recognize Dave Milo from other issues of our publication where we talked about his powder coating company TE Metalworks. He recently launched a new business called Komodo Pickleball that supplies the
whole lineup of Pickleball gear; everything from paddles to balls, to full setups for home play. During our chat, Dave talked about how much he enjoys Pickleball and how the idea for the business stemmed from when he started to think about making a better racquet for the sport. He started to toy around with a few ideas and have the ideas manufactured and made into a reality. He then would give and lend racquets to other local players to get their input on how much they liked (or didn’t like) features on his paddles. Including local players in the development CONTINUED >

process has been a big part of what drives Dave. In fact, when asked where the paddles are made, he admitted they are made elsewhere but he is already looking into the equipment to start manufacturing here! “I really want to involve our community”, Dave said with passion. There was so much more we talked about that I couldn't fit all of it here, but another interesting fact is that all of Dave's paddles and balls have passed USA Pickleball's certification. That was quite the process to learn about. But in short, there is a fee that needs to be

Dave had to correct that issue before the paddle received certification and pays close attention to make sure the paddles pass the first time. If you would like to learn more Dave is more than happy to chat with you at the store or you can check out the offerings at komodopickleball.com. ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET
Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our nine tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love.
28
H OM E U P DAT E | HOM E + DE S I GN
A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.
01
Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.
USE R EAL ESTATE WISELY
ORGA NIZE BY KIND A ND COLOR
02
Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, longsleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

NEGATIVE SPACE
03
Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.
FACE CLOTHES THE SA ME DIR ECTION
04
It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.
05
The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:

06
BAG & SHOE STOR AGE
Alternate the way shoes are facing. This ultimately helps fit more on each row and provide a visually appealing way to display those prized possessions. Everyone understands the frustration of searching for that one clutch when rushing out for the evening. Bags benefit from a space all their own. Get clear container storage for small bags and purses so you can locate and access them easily.
HIDDEN STOR AGE Hidden storage is a game changer in keeping a closet visually clean. Tuck folded clothes behind closed cabinet doors if the space is multipurpose. The floor-to-ceiling built-ins in Keri’s closet contain folded clothes, athleisure and other items she needs as she gets ready each day. Tuck away the least-used items: Use hidden storage and the very top of the closet for outof-season items and stuff only worn a few times a year.

LIGHTING Lighting is everything in a closet. Gone are the days of dim recessed lighting being sufficient. Consider adding a statement lighting fixture like a chandelier or pendant that provides ample bright lighting to your space, no matter how big or small.
08 M AKE A STATEMENT Why use an armchair when you have room for a sofa? Slide up a stool and colorful area rug to complete the look. If you have excessive wall space, consider a mini gallery wall or a statement wall with wallpaper to polish things off.
