Some call themselves "pet parents" some call their kids "tricycle motors, curtain climbers, rug rats". Said and done, the way we interact with children and animals may say a lot about each individual and it may also say a lot about the value both of these living enhancements can bring into our lives. Some of my earliest memories are associated with animals and though I'm not a "pet person" in the same sense that many are, there are some great memories for me associated with pets and working animals alike. I recently became a grandpa and have found that special connection with a tiny one to be as great as it was with my own children when they too were tiny. There's something different and extra special about grandparenthood that I still don't have words for. That said, I remember being sung to by my own grandparents when I was little and many of those songs for kids were about animals. "How much is that doggy in the window?" one song asked. Another was about riding in a horse drawn buggy. Farm animals and cute cuddly pets alike have a way of enhancing our lives when we truly connect. Children are indeed the future and showing them the way to a bright future can be some of the most valuable and rewarding work in a lifetime. As you enjoy the featured stories in this 24th issue of GJ Lifestyle, we want to give special thanks to our community partners whose participation on these pages make the stories and community focused features possible each month. 1-7: The Western Colorado Conservation Corps (WCCC) was out making our trails better this summer. The WCCC was deployed to the North Fruita Desert Special Recreation Management Area (on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management) to build new trails. Harmony Acres Equestrian Center is an Equine and AnimalAssisted Therapy Center located in Loma, Colorado, which has the mission of “creating a place where people and animals come together for the purpose of healing.” Serving children has always been an important part of this mission, explains Morgan Kareus, who is the Program Director at Harmony Acres. “There is a very special, genuine interaction between kids and animals,” states Kareus. “Children bring a natural innocence and joy...which the animals immediately pick up on and respond to. Our animals are always welcoming and loving, giving children the unique experience of complete acceptance.” That interaction forms the basis of three main programs for children at Harmony Acres: Therapeutic Riding: working with children who have physical, developmental, or mental/emotional disabilities, Animal-Assisted Psychotherapy for children who have gone through traumatic experiences such as: abuse, or family separation; and recreational programing: which involves typical children in the community with horses and other animals to build confidence, self-esteem, and empathy. These programs, explains Kareus, are lead by staff and therapists with the highest level of training in their respective fields. “Our mental health team [members] are certified therapists, with many years of helping individuals with trauma.” Says Kareus. “[For Therapeutic Riding] we have one PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor, and another staff member working towards this certification. Our staff [as a whole] has countless years of horse experience...and many years of experience connecting animals and people for the therapeutic benefits.” Programs typically last 6-10 weeks, one hour per week. In each therapeutic program, a treatment plan is developed with set treatment goals for the child participants. The therapists use this to track progress, just as in regular therapy sessions. The equine or animal participants add an element, however, that goes beyond traditional techniques. “Working with horses is relational,” says Kareus. “They thrive on trust, clear communication and encouragement. When children and horses begin to connect and build a relationship together, this often leads [the child] to a better understanding of themselves... The willingness of the horse to work together with us is intriguing, and the journey of understanding this connection is full of self-discovery.” Because this is such a unique and effective form of therapy, Harmony Acres focuses on serving all children and families, regardless of the family’s ability to pay.

Says Kareus, “Very few families or caregivers can afford to pay the full cost of a session.” Rather than turn families away, Harmony Acres offers participants financial aid through a sliding scale. For the remaining expenses, Harmony Acres’ Board of Directors and leadership engage in outreach efforts and fundraising, building community support and donations that help cover program costs. A portion of the program needs are also covered by community grants and local business sponsorships. Raising these funds takes a lot of effort, but the one thing that keeps the Harmony Acres team going: The high need in the community, which is never lacking. “There is a tremendous need [for these services] in our community,” explains Kareus. “We maintain a waitlist that is anywhere from 2 weeks to 4 months out.”

The other impetus that keeps Harmony Acres staff and directors diligently working day after day? The animals themselves, which are always eagerly waiting to share their love, lessons, and healing with others. Last year Harmony Acres was able to connect over 100 children to horses and other animals in professionally-facilitated therapeutic and recreational programs. With the addition of new staff and therapists to their programming this year, Harmony Acres hopes to increase their services by 30-50%. ELEVATE KIDS HELPING KIDS IN OUR COMMUNITIES

If you have met Melinda and Doug, I'm sure you would agree that they are excellent company to be around and pass the vibe that anything can be done. They both like to set goals and achieve them (hence doing the Colorado Trail 3 times previously) but they wanted to start something bigger than themselves. They wanted to help kids in our valley. So while thinking about completing the Colorado Trail again, but running this time, Melinda thought "why not make it about something bigger than ourselves"? Doug and Mel brainstormed about how and whom to help. They considered several organizations but none of them were really jumping out until they learned about Kid's Aid.

For those of you who don't know, Kid's Aid is a much-needed program in our valley. It was started in 2004 by Mike Berry. While Mike was dropping off his daughter at school he encountered a little girl that was crying. He asked the girl why she was sad. He learned that this child hadn't slept well the night before because she slept in a cold car and that she was hungry. This moved Mike to start Kids Aid and help children by supplying food to kids who need it with the backpack program. But Doug and Mel didn't stop at helping one organization. They also included the local Intermountain Adventist Academy, where their daughter attends school.

After considerable effort on their part, getting in front of local Rotary Clubs, letter campaigns, churches, BNI, and other volunteer groups spreading the word about raising funds for the Academy and Kids Aid, Doug and Melinda said they raised about $25,000 by the time they were done running the trail last time. The really cool part is that the money raised allowed the Intermountain Adventist Academy here in Grand Junction to expand its programs to the ninth and tenth grades. "We never imagined it would grow like this," Mel said with a happy smile. It's not just the Chasing the Sky project but last year Mel and Doug included another fundraiser with the Elevate Kid's Fun Run. That event raised $14,000 after expenses that went directly to Kid's Aid and the Academy. They are hoping to make the fun run a yearly event. With the goal to hit the Fastest Known Time on the Colorado Trail, and the second Fun Run. They are Chasing the Sky with their goals and we are excited to help them. Rachel, Mesa’s K-9 Companion Meeting Rachael was a treasure. Getting to know her and what she does for our community needs to be shared throughout our community because this dog plays an important, yet silent role, supporting advocacy for child victims of violence and sexual abuse performed by "The Center". Ashley (Rachael’s handler) is employed by the District Attorney’s Office, but housed at the Center for Children near Community Hospital. “We are housed here, which makes perfect sense because this is where children come to meet law enforcement for the first time”. Ashley continued, “I wish I could take a picture of when children first meet her. Because we come around the corner and their body language opens up and they change. They go from being scared, tense, and 'why am I here and have to talk to a strange person?' to all of the sudden, 'you have a dog?' and their face lights up!" Rachael is very involved throughout the whole process. From the beginning forensic interview, medical exams, therapy sessions, through the court proceedings, and all the way through the whole legal process. “It’s really great for the child. It gives them some continuity and minimizes the trauma of having to tell their story,” Ashley said. The

first court dog was introduced in 2004 and it was found that a dog did have a very positive effect on helping people navigate traumatic situations. Helping people, especially children, relax helps them say what they need to say and can help them get through the court phase and onto healing. An interesting fact about court house dogs is that they are trained to the same level as service dogs. Rachael has to re-certify on a regular basis. The big difference with a court house dog is that she has been trained to be around large groups of people in public settings, and children touching/ petting the dog constantly. for two hours at a time and she can be in a forensic interview for 3 hours at a time. Court dogs are also bred for low reactivity and low prey drive. Ashley explained, “So, if we are in court and an attorney starts shouting, which happens, it’s okay for Rachael to look, but not react, and she doesn’t. If a squirrel ran by right now, she would look, but she wouldn’t chase it, and she is bred for that.” When Rachael meets a child she likes to check them out, and lick their face, but she settles down pretty fast. She’ll rest her head on the child’s lap and let them pet her or Rachael will curl up next to them while the child talks. “She’s very sensitive to the emotions in the room. Courtrooms can be very emotional places. People cry, people get upset, and she’s there to help absorb some of that angst from the child. And that’s the whole idea; to support the child.” Ashley continued, "All of this can be taxing even for Rachael, and watching out for her mental health is important. So at the end of the day, we go and play, run around, and play with the other dog at home. I also take Rachael to AKC shows. It gets her out and stretches her brain and muscles and lets her just be a dog." You may be wondering how often Rachael serves our community. Ashley says “more than we would like to think about. Rachael works every day back to back”. If you would like to help the Center for Children you can donate to the Center or you can donate to Canine Companions (Canine.org) to help more dogs serve more communities.

These fudgy bar cookies traditionally are known as Revel Bars, but in our house, we call them Rebel Bars. Either way, these delicious bars won't last long at your next gathering. This is a layered bar cookie recipe. The bottom layer is a traditional cookie dough, pressed flat. Next, a gooey, fudgy layer of chocolate is added. The top layer is also traditional cookie dough but sprinkled on in little pieces so the fudgy layer can bubble through. Making these bars is a great activity for kids. My kids love to press the bottom layer flat, generously pour on the fudge (and swipe some with a spoon too!) and their little hands are perfect for sprinkling bits of dough over the top. Try this recipe out. You'll be glad you did. This recipe can be made in either an 18x13 half sheet (cookie sheet) pan with walls or in a 9x13 cake pan for a thicker cookie.

CHOCOLATE REVEL / REBEL BARS Ingredients: Fudge Mixture: • 1 14oz can of sweetened condensed milk • 1 1/2 cup chocolate chips • 2 Tablespoons butter • 2 teaspoons vanilla • 1/4 teaspoon salt Cookie Dough: • 1 cup butter • 2 cups brown sugar • 2 eggs • 2 teaspoons vanilla • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 2 1/2 cups flour • 3 cups quick oats

Directions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Begin by making the fudge mixture. Add the sweetened condensed milk, chocolate chips, and butter into a medium-size saucepan over low heat. Stir until the chocolate chips are melted and combined. You can also do this in the microwave starting with microwaving for one minute and then stirring. Then do 15-second increments of microwaving and stirring until melted and combined. Stir in the vanilla and salt. Set aside. Make the cookie dough by first creaming together the butter and sugar. This is our number one secret for any cookie recipe: Always cream the butter and sugars together before adding any other ingredients. Next mix in the eggs, vanilla, salt, and baking soda. Last stir in the flour and oats. The dough will be a little on the stiff side as far as traditional cookie doughs go. Divide the cookie dough into thirds. Press 2/3 of the mix into the bottom of your pan. Pour the fudge mixture onto the top of the flattened dough in your pan. Break apart the remaining 1/3 of cookie dough and sprinkle over the top of the fudge mixture. Bake for 25 minutes if using a cookie sheet, or 45 minutes if using a 9x13 cake pan. Let cool completely before cutting. I doubt there will be any leftovers, but if there are, these cookie bars will freeze great. Just cut into individual slices, put them in a plastic freezer bag, remove as much air as possible and freeze for up to 4 months. Enjoy!

They are filled with cream and hope and dreams! Child: Wouldn't that be funny if a clown was a donkey? That doesn't make sense, so that is funny, right? Child: Can we put glow sticks in the bath? Parent: Why would we do that? Child: So I can see the bottom when I take a bath. Child: I don't want to be an astronaut when I grow up. Space worms could get in my nose and that would be gross. Parent: We can get one tub of ice cream. Child: One BATH TUB of ice cream?!
