Dads, coaches, teachers, adult leaders of youth, uncles, grandfathers; it's a long list of those who often have a positive impact as role models, mentors and guides through this - sometimes messy - journey we call life. To all the inspiring men and those who aspire it inspire, we see you, we hear you and honor the sacrifices you make to help those around you be the best they can be. It seems fitting that those men who inspire and those who give so much of themselves in their efforts to encourage and who often push others to really achieve to their highest potential, are often called "Father Figures". So, in that spirit we'd like to say Happy Fathers Day to the inspiring men of our Mesa County community. We hope our local audience will find some nuggets of inspiration in the stories we share with you in this issue of Grand Junction Lifestyle.

1-7: REHAB came to Grand Junction this last month and it was a blast! One of the best things about them is they were engaged with the audience in a fun way, they were really down-to-earth and good people despite being pretty famous and having been rock stars since the 90s. REHAB has performed in our little corner of the world several times and they like the quiet small-town feel that we have. We look forward to seeing them again! Photography by C. W. Morgan

THE GRAND VALLEY AND THE NFL

ARTICLE BY RAIGAN HOLGATE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEE FICKLIN

Lenny Walterscheid

From scenery and hikes, to restaurants, retail stores, and people, Grand Junction is filled with so many hidden gems. If you take the time to listen to what is around you, it is easy to find them. One of Grand Junction’s gems is former NFL player, Lenny Walterscheid. If you meet Lenny in his business, All Pro Liquor, you may hear about his love for his family, or his 20+ years spent in the Grand Valley. He may tell you a hunting story or two, or maybe share some anecdotes from his 8-year career playing in the NFL for teams like the Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills. CONTINUED >

15

If you are lucky enough to hear him reminisce about his football career, you will likely hear how he started out as a running back, attending high school in Moab, Utah. Later he signed as a free agent and earned his spot with the Buffalo Bills. While Lenny shares his successes with humility, it is hard not to be inspired when you hear of how hard he worked to gain and maintain his spot against other drafted positions. He never let others intimidate him, and continually put in the hard work to get time in the game. His hard work was truly highlighted in his 97-yard rush against the Raiders which is still one of the proudest moments of his NFL career. Perhaps what Lenny is most proud of though, is his family. As he talked about celebrating 45 years of marriage with his college sweetheart, you could hear the love he has for the family they have built together. With three children and eight grandchildren, the Walterscheids stay very busy. Outside of family and work, Lenny has a passion for Grand Junction; for the community and lifestyle here. He enjoys the hunting, fishing, and camping our surrounding areas have to offer, as well as the beautiful scenery of the Monument, Bookcliffs and Grand Mesa. Lenny is further proof that no matter where you look in Grand Junction, there are incredible stories to be heard, people to be met, and experiences to be had.

MOUNTAIN BIKES, SERVICE, AND CARS Dan's Project Dodge

I NSP IR E D BY | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON

DAN ANTONELLI

If you ever get a chance to sit down and chat with Dan Antonelli you're in for a fun conversation, especially if you want to learn more about Grand Junction's mountain bike scene. In 1976, Dan saw a mountain bike he couldn't live without: a full-suspension Schwinn with all the high-tech bells and whistles of the day. He had to get the money for it though, as money doesn't grow on trees, and this bike was a full suspension in a day where that wasn't very common. So, Dan's mother thought of a creative idea, and that was for Dan to go out at night and find worms and nightcrawlers and sell them to the local drug store. Between this new entrepreneurial enterprise and other jobs, he was able to purchase his new high-tech bike and has loved riding ever since, even to the point that he will find a rental shop or take his bike with him on business trips, discovering new trails and paths wherever he goes. During the early 2000's many of the singletrack trails on the north end of the Uncompahgre Plateau were being closed to mountain bikes and Dan hated to see that

happen. He had already been volunteering with the Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail Association (COPMOBA) for a few years. He decided to join the board and started to really make a difference by advocating to get back access to those trails and to expand mountain biking in our area. Dan played a big part in the planning and building of the Flowing Park, Indian Point, and Mesa Top trails and I think I speak for many when I say we are thankful for those efforts. Dan's contributions to our community don't even come close to stopping there. He volunteers as a guide for those who want to ride the whole Kokopelli trail from the Kokopelli trailhead all the way to Moab, he cleans up trails in the early spring by taking a chain saw with him when he rides, and he helps people who are in need of a car by giving them one. But let's back up a little. Around the time Dan joined the board for COPMOBA, he was also busy building his car repair business. He started by renting a few repair bays from another garage, and that worked well for a few years. CONTINUED >

COPMOBA

Circumstances changed, however, and he needed to move his business. After some extensive search efforts, he found his current location and that has been positive not only for his business but also for helping people in our communit y. "I don't just want to collect money from people. I really want to give back to my communit y," Dan commented when asked about the Wheels to Prosper work he does. A couple of times a year Dan will purchase a car and f ix it up with the help of NA PA, Moore's Auto Body, Rapid Response, Discount Tire, and others. With this help, he is able to get the car f ixed up and then f ind someone who is in need and give it away. He loves this program and if you would like to nominate someone for the program listen to our local radio stations for details!

Western Colorado is home to incredibly talented people. From mountain bikers to race car drivers (see the May 2021 issue), to football players, and local painters Philip Carlton and John Lintott. Both of whom have been invited to the Annual Grand Canyon Celebration of Art (CoA). CoA invites artists to paint “en plein air” (outside on location) for a week at the Grand Canyon. It is quite an accomplishment to get an invitation to this exclusive event and it is really cool that western Colorado is represented by two incredibly talented artists!

Philip Carlton

Philip started out in engineering and physics but found a love of painting after a college art class and a trip to the Grand Tetons. Philip has been working towards painting at the Grand Canyon CoA. John started out in Landscape architecture but shifted into studying art in college. He has been painting for 25 years and enjoys the challenge of scenery paintings. He enjoys hiking into unfamiliar landscapes and being able to share that with others. This is his second year at the CoA. The works produced at CoA will be shown in an exhibition that extends for four months. This year, many of the 22 participating artists will paint along the South Rim from September 10–16. Visitors to Grand Canyon will be able to view the artists as they create their work interpreting the ever-shifting view of the Grand Canyon. This event is open to the public, and the completed paintings will be available for purchase on-site.

Negative 25 WITH 35MM COLOR NEGATIVE FILM

Since becoming the Editor for Grand Junction Lifestyle, I have re-discovered the love of photography. I even bought a new mirrorless camera that I have thoroughly enjoyed using. I recently stumbled across some film photography YouTube channels, and now I'm hooked! I bought an old 35mm film camera and started snapping away. I decided I wanted to capture people enjoying our wonderful corner of the world. So, I snagged a roll of Kodak Gold 200 and went to the Lunch Loops. It was a lot of fun and a challenge to limit myself to only 25 frames. I want to thank MJ Thomas Photography for developing and scanning the film!

THE AMERICAN DREAM

We hear stories of individuals coming to the United States and becoming successful, but don’t often meet someone in person who has accomplished this feat. But now, we would like to introduce you to one who has. Special thanks to Derek Irick for sitting down with us to share his incredible story and to Cindy Dickey who recommended him. Derek's dad passed away when he was a year and a half old, and not long after, his mother took him to his grandparent's home and left him there. His grandparents live in a small village in the Heman province in China. In his "home town" there is only a corner store, dirt roads, no cars, no refrigerators, cooking is done with an open flame, and growing your own food isn't a pastime, but a necessary chore. When Derek turned eight, the local school wasn't able to help him continue his education and so his grandparents decided to send him to the orphanage in Luoyang, China, a 675-mile journey he had to complete

by himself as an eight-year-old. After arriving and getting into the swing of his new life, he was permitted to travel back to his grandparents from time to time over the years. At the orphanage, he played in the band, drew pictures, and tried to learn English. He didn't want to learn English just for fun: He saw some fellow orphans get adopted to the United States and he saw the pictures they would send back of big "castle" homes. In these pictures, he saw his friends now eating cheeseburgers instead of what he had, which was cabbage boiled in water with a touch of pig fat for seasoning. When Derek turned 12, he became much more serious about wanting to be adopted and he asked his grandparents to sign the papers to allow him to be adopted by an American family. Derek shared that this was unquestionably a hard decision, as Derek was the only one to carry the family name, and they knew they may never see him again. After a little time, Derek was adopted by a family in Nashville, Tennessee. Not just that, but one of his good friends was adopted by the same family! That was truly exciting for him and his friend as they could make this life change together. The family picked Derek and his friend up in China and flew to New York City. NYC was a huge culture shock. He could not understand anyone, he was jet-lagged, and ironically enough, he hated cheeseburgers. Thankfully they went to China Town and "that was the best part", Derek remembered fondly. After a couple of days in NYC, they took a plane to Nashville. When they arrived, there was a huge crowd of people with "welcome home" signs written in English and Chinese and tons of people cheering for him and his friend. "It was awesome", Derek said. His Nashville family homeschooled their children, and Derek did not enjoy it. The other boys in the family were the same age but twice his size and they didn't get along. "I felt trapped there", Derek described as they were at the home a lot. It got to the point that Derek approached his adopted dad and requested to find another family. His adopted parents were heartbroken, but found him a family in Western Colorado. This new Colorado family had several adopted kids. Three from China, one from Korea, and funny enough, this family homeschooled as well. But things went much better here. He excelled in his studies, ran track, and tied for MVP. When he finished high school, he went to the Western Colorado Community College and Colorado Mesa University and graduated with 4 degrees (three of

which are Bachelor's). While in college, he obtained his realtor's license and joined a real estate team and began selling homes. He said he would wear blue light glasses to look older so people would take him a little more seriously when he was trying to sell a home. Derek doesn't need those glasses anymore to be taken seriously. Derek has won the Best of the West Realtor for two years in a row and he regularly contributes to our community in big ways. He is on the board of several organizations in the valley such as the Western Slope Center for Children, the Mesa County Fellowship Christan Athletes, Lion's club, and the Young Professionals Network of Mesa County, in addition to being involved with the Alumni Chapter for CMU, and a volunteer for JUCO. There is definitely more that could be written. If you ever get the chance to chat with Derek we would recommend it. Thanks for coming around the world Derek!
