BIOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM AND AT HOME A Local Teacher that Stands Out ARTICLE BY RAIGAN HOLGATE PHOTOGRAPHY BY C. W. MORGAN

When many of us look back on our high school days, there is always one teacher who truly stands out. One teacher who did things differently, who helped us to see the world from a new perspective, or even helped us believe in the big impact of small actions. To many students at Grand Junction High School, that teacher is Michelle Davis. Mrs. Davis has been a high school biology teacher for 15 years, eight of which have been with Grand Junction High School. Michelle found a love for biology and science early on in her life and was inspired by her father to combine that passion with teaching. Teaching a general living systems curriculum allows Mrs. Davis to bring that thrill for science to her students by showing them the complexities of the world around them. One hands-on way Mrs. Davis brings her excitement for science and the world to her classroom is by sharing her journey of worm composting with her students. It has been a fun, interactive way for her to connect to her students and show them how small intentional actions can make a huge sustainable change. Mrs. Davis began worm composting about three years ago after learning how to begin from a good friend of hers. She was quickly fascinated with the process and took to the internet to learn more. She explained how rewarding it was to take trash and use it for something sustainable and helpful. She uses this compost in her planters and garden. Her students love to participate by bringing in food scraps to feed to the worms and watching the composting process slowly happen.

12

T R E N D SE T T E R | ED U CATI ON

Composting can seem complicated and overwhelming when you first start out, but Mrs. Davis advised there is truly no right or wrong way to compost. It will be different for each person based on what scraps you have to put into it, what you’re using the compost for, and what your overall goal with composting is. Don’t let not knowing how to compost keep you from starting, because that is the most important step… to start! It is best to start out simple, then trial and error will help you find what works best for you. Michelle reiterated that Google is your best friend when learning how to get started. There are so many helpful websites and blogs out there that there is no excuse not to give it a shot. As with any new experiment, don’t forget to get others involved. Composting is an easy and fun way to get the whole family involved. As Mrs. Davis has shown to her students, composting is a small way to find fascination and ownership in the world around us. F A R M S , F A M I LY, F U N , AND FAREWELLS

A PART OF GRAND VALLEY HISTORY

Farming has always been in Art Fisher’s blood and he has been farming since he was four years old. Even after he and his wife, Tressa, were married and moved to Orchard Mesa, Art was still making the drive to the north end of town to help his father, Frank Fisher, farm his land in between oil field shifts. It is no surprise that his love of farming is so strong. The Fisher family has been farming in our beautiful valley for a long time. Art’s grandparents, along with his father, farmed the land

that the Mesa Mall and Fisher’s Liquor Barn stands on currently. After the land was sold, Frank moved and started farming at 948 26 Rd. Fast forward a few decades, when Art and Tressa were preparing to take over the farm. They asked Frank how many acres he was farming and Frank replied: “Oh, Maybe, 350-400 acres”. Only after Frank passed away from a rare heart disease did they find out that Frank was actually farming 1,600 acres between his personal

land and custom farming. “Frank was a man who never had anything on paper. Everything was a handshake and there weren’t any signed deals. Everything was in his head.” Tressa recalled, “He started farming when he was 14. He wasn’t supposed to be. He was supposed to be in school. But he was out there building his farming business. He was really smart.” When asked what the farm was like growing up and as a young adult Art replied, “I did all the farming, and dad knew the customers and the business side of it.” He recalled the task of taking care of 2,000 pigs over the course of a few years and then graduating to caring for cattle. “Feeding, there was a lot of feed,” Art said, “We would always take them up to the mountains to let them graze while we farmed down here in the valley. I would help run the cattle up there.” There were 1,400 head of

cattle that Art would help with and with remembrance in his eye he said “We would feed them with the little bales of hay. Dad would fit 80-90 bales of hay in the back of his truck.” It was a lot of work, but it came with many good memories. When Art and Tressa moved into the home that Art grew up in and took over the farm, “It was a $100,000 pay cut from the oil field to start farming, but it was the right thing to do and we never regretted it.” Tressa continued, “We had to call all Frank’s customers and ask, how many acres do you have and what do we do for you? It was quite the chore”. Art and Tressa later recalled telling their customers that they would be starting an invoice system and everyone was so happy because they wouldn’t have to run out in the middle of a field or an animal pen to pay for the work services anymore. Another obstacle was figuring out the logistics of farming not only his own land, but the custom farming of others’ land as well. “In the spring everyone wants you to cut, but some of this machinery only drives 16-20mph. We had to educate our customers about logistics so we could be more efficient.” When asked about living in their current home at 948 26 Rd, Tressa recalled with gratefulness, “This home has been a grand central station for years. So many of our customers and neighbors over the years have come to visit or bring a Christmas treat, just to show appreciation for their farmer and neighbor. The amount of love, support, and gratitude we have received since we announced Art’s retirement has been surreal.” Tressa said. Currently, Art and Tressa are getting ready to officially retire and move out to Kentucky to enjoy retirement. “When you’re a farmer, your life’s schedule is dictated by the weather and humidity levels. If the humidity is right at three in the morning, then Art is out in the field at three in the morning”, Tressa said matter-of-factly. So there is little doubt they will be enjoying retired life and not worrying about humidity levels and not taking short naps instead of a full good night’s sleep. The Fisher’s beautiful home with its rich and happy history is now for sale. If you would like to view the property, or inquire about it, you can call Julie Adams at (970) 712-1977 or email her at julieadamsgj@gmail.com. CONTINUED > MAR CH 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . INGREDIENTS • 4 Eggs • 2 Strips of thick-cut bacon or breaded chicken strips (or do both, we won’t judge) • 1 Cup of french fries (seasoned curly fries are a great choice here) • 1/3 Bell pepper • 1/3 Onion • 1/2 Roma tomato • 1 tsp. of garlic • Ranch (to taste) • Frank’s Red Hot (to taste) • Top with shredded cheddar cheese DIRECTIONS First deep fry the fries (air fryers are also great here to cut down on a few calories). Cut the bacon into bits and cook. Or if you choose to use chicken strips, fry those and cut them into bite-sized pieces. Dice the bell peppers, onions, and tomatoes into small pieces. When that’s done, mix all the ingredients together in a big pan and cook them all together (be careful to not smash the fries! The fries add a great texture). Then place them all on your favorite tortilla and top off with ranch, hot sauce, and cheddar! These measurements are for 2 burritos but feel free to add more or less to taste or the number of people you plan on having over. If you plan to make a batch for freezer meals, just make the burritos as normal then put them in the freezer. When you’re ready to eat them, pop them in the microwave and enjoy them on the go!

Meet Chris and Megan, the proud owners of CPR Carpet Cleaning in the Grand Valley. The two have been running the company since April 2021 after purchasing it from their long-time neighbors who formerly had the business for almost 15 years. Chris had spent time working with the company previously and when it was offered, he and his wife accepted the challenge of taking on a business during a pandemic. They have risen to the task seamlessly and have not only kept the business running but have managed to stay quite busy! Chris said their priority is attention to detail, doing the most pristine work they can, and ensuring that when they take on a job, they are creating life-long customers. The business does both residential CONTINUED >

and commercial jobs with a focus on residential, including many senior citizens that they help whenever possible. It is important for Chris and Megan to do their part to help their community where they can, and they give discounts to Armed Forces, Police, Fire & Rescue, nurses, and other medical professionals. Their belief is that many people in these careers do not get the recognition they deserve and it is their goal to show their appreciation in this way. Megan is a former EMT dispatcher and understands how difficult the job can be. A discount is a humble way to show men and women in their community that their work is appreciated. Megan and Chris are the embodiment of a Colorado family. When they aren’t striving to create the best company they can, they are making sure to utilize the abundance of outdoor recreation the valley has to offer. Luckily, they

live in a place where there is no shortage of activities! The two spend as much free time as possible with their five children in the great outdoors. The family owns two rafts as well as a few kayaks and they enjoy taking them on the Colorado River or camping on the Grand Mesa. If they aren’t hiking, camping, or enjoying the river, they try to incorporate nature through trips to the zoo or aquarium with their younger children. After talking with Megan and Chris, even for a brief time, it is easy to be comfortable with them. They are friendly, kind, and relatable people who simply want to have a business that does good work they’re proud of while enjoying the Grand Valley’s outdoor resources with their kids. They seem to have figured out how to have an excellent work-life balance and are finding true enjoyment in both.

CITY LIFESTYLE: SHARE WITH US YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE INFLUENCE IT HAD ON YOUR JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. DAPHNE OZ : I was born in Philly, raised in New Jersey, and now

my husband and our four kids and I live in Florida. I spend a few days each week working in NYC taping our new syndicated talk show, The Good Dish, covering everything delicious in daytime which is a dream job for an eater by nature, by calling and by choice—like I am.

CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach is: Abundant Simplicity.

Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you.

CL: WHAT INSPIRED YOUR NEWEST COOKBOOK AND WHAT CAN WE GET EXCITED ABOUT? DO: In “Eat Your Heart Out: All-Fun, No-Fuss Food To Celebrate

Eating Clean” I share the techniques I’ve used to get my mind, energy and body back on track after each pregnancy or anytime I’ve needed to reboot good habits—without ever losing the joy of cooking, the fun of mealtime and the stress-free pleasure of doing it intuitively. “Eat Your Heart Out” is a collection of 150 recipes free from gluten and refined sugar that have consistently helped me lose weight without ever disappointing my demanding tastebuds—or making healthy eating feel like a job I don’t need or want.
