Art connects us to memories, to history and to visions of our future. I have always admired the vast creativity that artisans of all kinds pour into their craftsmanship. My second great uncle, Avard Fairbanks was the sculptor who created the original mermaid hood ornament for the Plymouth car brand and the Rocky Mountain bighorn ram for the Dodge brand. His sculpture of Abe Lincoln was featured on the Illinois quarter coin and his many works depicting mid 1800s pioneers are also widely known. Art in other forms runs deep in my roots as well. Painters, musicians, and craftsmen dating back as far as the 1600s in Massachusetts created art that has withstood the tests of time. Our February issue is dedicated to sharing about local artists whose skills enrich our community in a variety of presentations. As you read about a few artisans in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love too. After all, February is the month of love. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents, and special interests fall by the wayside. We hope our friends and neighbors find a balance between creative outlets, recreation, and productive time throughout the year. So, while you fill your home with chocolates, flowers, and valentines (and perhaps college basketball) this month, remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us. And while you are at it, don’t forget to shop local and support local makers and artists right here in our community. Sincerely,

1-7: 2021 has been rumored to be the last year of the beautiful blue lights. The tradition started in 2006 and there were less than 40,000 lights. For its last year, the home and yard were covered with about 600,000 lights! Hopefully, the lights will come back. Only time will tell.

GJ’S YOUTH ART SCENE

Anyone who strolls down Main Street, Grand Junction knows that we are a city that values art. The Western Slope is especially great at encouraging young artists. Wynter Fisher is one such young artist. At only 16 years of age, she already has her art featured and sold in various locations around town and among western Colorado’s small towns.

Wynter Fisher

Wynter comes from creative genes. Her mother is an author and her father is a craftsman, but they report Wynter’s love for art is all her own and started at a very young age. “Wynter has been drawing since she could pick up a pencil. We have had to repaint the walls several times.” Her childish drawings and wall art scribbles have blossomed into her own style and this young artist is already making a name for herself. Wynter’s artwork is primarily paintings and drawings, though she also makes jewelry and sells it in her family’s booth at the downtown farmers market. Five years ago her family was on a road trip and they stumbled across Marble, CO. They stopped in at Abstract Marble in the town and they got chatting with the owner, Gary Bascom. He gave Wynter a box of marble pieces. He encouraged her to paint on them and bring them back to display. She has been displaying and selling, paintings on marble ever since. Some of her works have proven to be especially popular and sell before she even completes the piece. She even has clients who want her work displayed outside for the world to see. It took some experimentation, but Wynter and her parents have found a way to preserve her works on marble even outside in the harsh Colorado weather. Her artwork is also displayed and sold in the Paonia Flower Shop. There you can find more of CONTINUED > her paintings and jewelry. FEB R UARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Wynter reports that she doesn’t draw inspiration from only one source, rather, she looks for artist works she is interested in and studies them, and watches them paint. It is of little surprise that she is a visual learner. Art is not her only passion, she is also interested in flying. She is currently working towards getting her pilot’s license and has a goal to get it before her driver’s license. Her parents report she has had a passion for all things flight ever since she was little. Wynter has dreams of becoming a fighter pilot in the military. You can find Wynter’s artwork at HiddenCabinTreasures.net. You can also find her work, along with her parents’ talents of writing and woodworking, on Etsy, Pintrerest, MeWe, Parler, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Gab.

F E AT U R E | ARTS + CU LTURE

ARTICLE BY C. W. MORGAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHANACHIE CARROLL, ASHTON CALL

Pavia Justinian has several works of art displayed all over town, and beyond. There is a very good chance you have seen her work. Her sculptures ‘Felicia’, ‘Sigma’, and ‘Zafira’ are all displayed on Main street in downtown Grand Junction. She also has a painted transformer box at Horizon Dr and G Rd named ‘King of the Trail’. She painted a mural at the Little Salt Wash trail-head, in Fruita titled ‘Undercurrents’, and another mural for New Emerson Elementry titled ‘Confluence’. She is also the creator of a solar-illuminated sculpture in Palisade named ‘Cahaya’. Pavia has several awards to her name. During her studies at Colorado Mesa University, she received 6 awards before graduating. Since then she has received 10 more awards in her 6-year career as a professional artist. Some of those include; • People’s Choice Award - Art for the Mountain Community, Evergreen, CO • Best in Show/First Place - Art on the Corner, Grand Junction, CO • People’s Choice Award - Sculpture on 73rd Ave, Denver, CO • Commissioner’s Choice Award - Art on the Move, Longmont, CO • People’s Choice Award - Moab Art Trails, Moab, UT • Third Place - Art 2C on Havana Street, Aurora, CO And last but not least she won the 30th Annual Colorado Winefest Art Exhibit in Palisade. Pavia didn’t set out to win all these awards. In fact, she wasn’t going to pursue art at all. She originally started school with plans to enter the medical field, until one day, her husband, Shanachie Carroll, encouraged her to pursue art as a career. Ever since then she has been working with paint, salvaged chrome, cement, old rusty metal, epoxies, glass, and other objects. She loves the unevenness of the textures and how the colorful paints she uses interact with those textures. Pavia is also fond of the parts of the sculpture we don’t see or don’t tend to think about, such as the metal frame of her sculptures. Designing, cutting, and welding the metal that stays unseen are all enjoyable parts of her creative process. And it’s not just sculptures that CONTINUED >

Pavia has several awards to her name. During her studies at Colorado Mesa University, she received 6 awards before graduating. Since then she has received 10 more awards in her 6-year career as a professional artist.

Pavia enjoys murals too; another favorite of hers. The mural painted at New Emerson Elementry was fun for her, and she is glad that the students of New Emerson got to play some part in the creation of that mural. Her favorite part of doing murals is knowing that people can just happen across art and enjoy it. She would love to see more of that kind of exposure to art in our community. Pavia loves the beauty of Colorado, and who can blame her? Colorado is a beautiful place with wild mountains, vivid sunsets, and desert landscapes. She believes that art can positively impact our community and desires that the arts continue to expand around the Western Slope. It’s because of this love of creating art for people to enjoy, that she seeks the opportunity to show her art. However, she also does work for clients as well. She has done

20

several pieces for people’s homes. When asked about the creative process for privately commissioned pieces she couldn’t help but smile. First, she consults with the client and goes to see the space where the art will be placed. The space dimensions play an important role in how the art will be made in regards to not only dimensions but also color and composition. Pavia will spend a lot of time on her iPad in those beginning phases planning the piece. When asked if she likes client involvement, Pavia replied that each commission is different. Some people really enjoy being part of the whole process, while others give her complete control. Either situation and everything in between, is enjoyable. Pavia draws inspiration from many sources. She enjoys works from Picasso and Henri Matisse. A lot of her inspiration comes from her mentor Dave Davies. Dave, who

was a titan in our community, started the Art on the Corner program. The idea came after the valley’s infamous “Black Sunday”. In 1982 thousands of Exxon employees were laid off from work and they all packed up and left the Western Slope. Dave wanted to boost the community’s morale, so he got his friends to donate sculptures to display downtown for a year. What is especially fascinating is that this program has gone on to be replicated by several communities in Colorado and beyond. When Pavia isn’t reflecting from inspiration, welding a frame for a sculpture, or painting for a client, she likes to read and listen to books authored by Ann Rice and history books. She also enjoys listening to Jefferson Airplane or the Doors. When she has more time with Shanachie and their dogs, they love to take spontaneous road trips where the journey is the destination.

They researched the company and found that Nothing Bundt Cakes is a good franchise, and the core company values were a good fit with the Gordons’ core family values. They began the process and opened their doors in October of 2021. It’s a nice feeling to find a bakery with fresh, delicious bakes and friendly company. Grand Junction is home to such a company: Nothing Bundt Cakes. Erin Gordon grew up here in Grand Junction, but she attended College in Lubbock, Texas, where she discovered her love of cake. One night, she was invited by some friends to “go get cake”, a suggestion she found confusing because it was a thirty-minute drive to Nothing Bundt Cake. Little did she know that that experience would be pivotal for her. Her mother, Christie, was coming to visit that weekend, and Erin took the cake to the hotel. They spent the weekend watching movies and eating cake. After college, she moved to Denver and worked for her father’s construction company. When Erin started working, the company meetings became more enjoyable and the environment changed for the better, reports John Gordon, Erin’s dad. Why? Because Erin brought the cake in. Upon returning to Grand Junction in October 2020, Erin suggested to her parents that Grand Junction needed a Nothing Bundt Cakes. They were looking for something new and a little bit different to invest in. They researched the company and found that Nothing Bundt Cakes is a good franchise, and the core company values were a good fit with the Gordons’ core family values. They began the process and opened their doors in October of 2021. The training to get started was interesting and full of surprises - at one point it included a glue gun - but they thoroughly enjoyed it and were so excited to be here. The Gordons love this business! It is near impossible to come into the shop and remain in a grouchy mood. Last week when the weather was a bit gloomy, people walked in and would exclaim, “Oh, this is a lot better.”

Nothing Bundt Cakes, and the Gordons love being involved in the community, embodying a spirit of champions, and genuine connection. They believe in fostering a strong team dynamic and offering a warm welcome to guests. Christie and Erin are thrilled that they have a great team here. It makes it so easy to come to work with the home-and-family atmosphere they have created. The Gordons feel that community is important, and they want to make that connection every day. Christie has a son who has special needs and the Gordons have seen that our community is generous in fundraising for special needs and they really appreciate that. They want to create that same atmosphere in this business. The Gordons look forward to getting involved with people through the shop and events in the community. They want the community to know that, although this is a franchise, the Gordon family is local. They want to get to know the community and look forward to meeting new people, seeing old friends, and serving those around them. Nothing Bundts Cake makes their cakes fresh daily. Everything is made from scratch: from the ingredients to the baking, to the icing, all homemade and done in-house. The Gordons love this business! It is near impossible to come into the shop and remain in a grouchy mood. Last week when the weather was a bit gloomy, people walked in and would exclaim, “Oh, this is a lot better.”

A LITTLE HIS-STORY, HER-STORY Established in 1985, Thomas Hunn Jewelers is the oldest jewelry shop in downtown Grand Junction, Colorado. On June 24, 1991, Thomas’ daughter, Niki, joined the company as a Master Bench Jeweler and Gemological Institute of America (GIA) graduate. After 45 years as a master jeweler, Thomas Hunn retired on April 1, 2014, making Niki president of Thomas Hunn Jewelers. Before too long, Niki’s son, Nick, joined the company after graduating from high school in May of 2014. Keeping the family tradition alive and strong, Nick is currently an apprentice bench jeweler and is working toward his graduate gemologist degree. With over 30 years of experience and a third generation working at the company, the plan is for Thomas Hunn Jewelers to be around for many years to come. As the family moves this business into the future, they maintain the family tradition of “quality jewelry at competitive prices.” Pictured here with Brian Kelley of the country music sensation, Florida Georgia Line, Niki and Nick take a moment to enjoy one of many friendships they form with their wide array of customers from far and near. Ask their customers about the service and care they receive, or better yet experience it for yourself and you’ll find genuine caring for the people who trust them with some of their

most meaningful purchases in life. When it comes time for an emblem of a lifetime commitment, wedding sets are among the most revered purchases ever made. Special gifts for other occasions like Valentine’s Day, wedding anniversaries, a graduation, celebrating a new baby, first career job, and countless other reasons are abundant. Need something special designed or an heirloom made over? The Florida tarpon pendant hanging from Brian Kelley’s neck is a splendid example of what can be achieved with a little imagination and the skills of true professionals.

The team at Thomas Hunn Jewelers finds great fulfillment in serving friends and neighbors and making new ones along the way, every day. Their family hopes to get to know you in the same way.

Even if you bought a ring, brooch, pendant, earrings, watch or necklace somewhere else, you’ll always find the guidance offered, the expertise, and the friendly service secondto-none. Sometimes jewelry needs a good but gentle cleaning, sometimes the wear and tear of decades can leave a favorite piece needing some specialized attention. Mechanical watches have moving parts that wear out over time. Batteries run down in electric watches. When these things happen, it’s good to have a friend with the know-how to set things right. Have you ever been dismissed by a merchant in any field of business when looking for caring service for something you own, simply because you “didn’t buy that here?” The team at Thomas Hunn Jewelers finds great fulfillment in serving friends and neighbors and making new ones along the way, every day. Their family hopes to get to know you in the same way.

Their award-winning in-house services span a variety of financial d isciplines, i ncluding c omprehensive wealth and investment management, insurance, tax prep, trusts, estate, financial and retirement planning. Two issues coming together at once inspired the creation of Mallouk’s business. “My dad was a physician frustrated with his financial advisor who sold him products and didn’t really explain things well, and I was an estate attorney that saw a full view of the advisory world and thought there was a better way to deliver

Ultimately, that led to Creative Planning offering investments and planning as well as legal and tax advice in a very approachable, consultative way.” Mallouk has written several books, including 5 Mistakes Every Investor Makes and How to Avoid Them, and has cowritten Unshakeable: Your Financial Freedom Playbook and The Path: Accelerating Your Journey to Financial Freedom with Tony Robbins. “People are generally fearful of investment and feel the market is too low or too high at any given time. When there is a correction (a drop of 10% or more), people generally stay on the sidelines or sell their stocks, fearing the market may collapse and stay lower—there have been over 100 corrections, usually about one per year, and they have all ended with a full recovery. Some of these corrections turn into bear markets, a drop of 20% or more, and all have ended with a full recovery. We aren’t surprised when a Hershey’s bar, box of cereal or ticket to Disney World costs more, but somehow are shocked when the market hits an all time high. It’s normal, and inflation has a lot to do with it.” For those with a 401(k), Mallouk says to do everything you can to contribute. “Some 401(k) plans have an employer match, meaning for every dollar you put into the 401(k), the company will match—it usually applies to the first 3%. It’s a guaranteed 100% rate of return, and there is just nothing else you can do that is going to be as good as that. If you have the ability to contribute the max do that as well, but for sure take advantage of the match.” When faced with the choice to either invest or pay off debts first, Mallouk says to start with focusing on the interest rate. “All debts aren’t created equal—if you have credit card debt where you are paying 10% or more in interest, then paying off the debt before doing anything else other than a 401(k) match is the way to go. If your only debt is a home mortgage at 2-4% or so, then investing over a long period of time is very likely to yield you a far better outcome than making extra debt payments.” When planning an estate, it’s crucial to have a healthcare and financial power of attorney and a will or trust. “A healthcare power of attorney names someone to make healthcare decisions for you in the event you can’t make them for yourself. A financial power of attorney names someone to make financial decisions for you if you can’t for yourself. Lastly a will or a trust both name who will handle things for you in the event of your death, and who will oversee and inherit your assets. Trusts tend to make more sense for wealthier individuals as it can bypass the probate court system, which keeps things private, allows for a faster transfer of assets after death, and because it skips the court system, settling the estate is much less expensive.” When looking for a financial advisor, find the right one by asking the right questions. “Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. A minority of financial advisors

“We are planning led, meaning we get to know our clients very well prior to giving them advice. All our portfolios are customized to help clients accomplish their goals, rather than being constructed based on age or risk tolerance.”

are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your best interests. There are thousands of advisors that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time. From there, look for education, credentials and experience with people like you.” As for the future, it’s never looked brighter at Creative Planning. “It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history. In many ways, it feels like we are just at the starting line.” For more information, visit CreativePlanning.com.
