February is still cold, but beginning to break out of the three-dog-nights of the deep winter. The cold weather leads to cabin fever which in turn brings out all kinds of creativity. Some people paint, others crochet, others tie fishing flies and still, others bake or write and the list goes on and on. I guess the point is that when we have little else to do we homo-sapiens come up

with things to make ourselves more productive, more comfortable, or at least more fulfilled with the use of our time. It seems that when we make something for someone else, that is when the fulfillment is at its peak. At about seven years old, I rode along with my parents to load up a massive long-dead trunk of a black walnut tree. My dad painstakingly shaped that wood into two pieces of furniture: a coffee table that's really nothing fancy, but survived 6 kids and is still in good shape and a beautiful glass-door china hutch with a solid wood cabinet base. I feel blessed to now own both pieces because I saw them come to life from that knarled old tree trunk. The memory of that process has stuck with me.

Sometimes things that have no intrinsic value are among the most meaningful, simply because of the care that went into creating something for someone else. A refrigerator masterpiece scribbled out by a three-year-old, a favorite quilt made by grandma, or a true artistic masterpiece may each have meaning far beyond their "market value" to a loved one.

I hope this February, we can all find ways to be a little kinder, a little more patient, and a lot more enthusiastic about finding the deeply meaningful old memories, and making new ones that will live on for generations to come.

S A U VAG E SPECTRUM WHAT MAKES A WINE ‘WILD’ AND IS THAT EVEN A GOOD THING? The grower’s name, Kai Bab Sauvage, lends itself to the subtitle here. Sauvage is a French word, meaning ‘savage’ as in ‘wild,’ which fits when you consider that the young winemaker, Patric Matysiewski, has developed an exclusive technique to create their wines. Kai Bab has been farming for 20 years and has put his experience to good use for the Sauvage Spectrum Winery, growing 26 different grape varietals. Combined with Patric’s unique entrance into the wine business their fruit-forward approach to wine makes an interesting addition to Western Colorado’s thriving wine industry.

The winery is known for its delicious, affordable sparkling wine, Sparklets, with the cost per bottle below $25. They choose to keep their wines unpretentious; for instance, using crown caps (like on a bottle of beer) instead of corks.

Sauvage Spectrum has another trick up their sleeve. They are a “custom-crush winery” creating wines for labels that are not their own. They do everything from selling their grapes, their juice, bulk wine, and even bottled wines for other winemakers. Yes, Patric can even be their winemaker! I had to ask Patric why they would do that. Aside from the obvious profit motive, he said, “It’s fun to see other people’s dreams come true and be part of that process.”

encourage bar and restaurant owners to sell the wine from kegs. The wine flavor is not affected in the process and the cost to the bar or restaurant is a few dollars per glass, which allows them to make a profit selling wine. Although Patric and Elijah are always busy working the winery, they feel called to support the local wine community and the community at large. They have joined with other wineries and businesses in the area to create the “Winter Wine Tour” of Palisade. The $70 tour includes wine tastings at four Colorado wineries and lunch at the Palisade Café and Wine Bar. Transportation is available with Pali Tours and accommodations are available at the Spoke and Vine Motel. Sauvage Spectrum has partnered with the Wildland Firefighter Foundation collaborating with Infinite Monkey Theorem Winery to create ‘Ignition Alliance’ wine with 20% of the proceeds going to families of firefighters who have been injured or died in the line of duty. The stunning label on the wine was created by an 18-year-old local artist. The answer to the question is, yes, wild wine is a good thing when that means delicious wine is created in new ways. Visit Sauvage Spectrum winery and “celebrate every day.”

Other advice when it comes to fighting off the aging process includes these specific dos and don’ts: First of all, Think About It and use your common sense. Don’t rush into something that seems to be popular just because others are talking about it. Second, Skin Damage Prevention? Oh Yes! If you can, cover up when outdoors and/or use 50+ sunscreen and avoid prolonged direct sun exposure. Sebum (made in the sebaceous glands of your skin’s dermis) is the final coating of protection your skin needs to resist the sun damaging effect. Because the sebum washes away by bathing and diminishes when we age, a quality topical sunscreen needs to take the place of the missing sebum. Third, Diet? Yes, Overeating is ultimately the cause of obesity, coupled with low thyroid hormone. Listen to your body, don’t overeat, and balance hormones thru hormone replenishment; critical elements in keeping a healthy weight, and looking and feeling your best. Fourth, Smoking? Just don’t get started (or stop). At a cellular level, microcirculation is restricted because nicotine from smoking causes capillaries to constrict and deprives cells of the oxygen they

RESIDENTS TESTING POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 INCREASED, FAMILY HEALTH WEST SAW THE NEED FOR SPECIALIZED CARE ADDRESSING THE SOMETIMES LINGERING EFFECTS OF COVID-19. While most patients recover completely within a few weeks, some patients, even those who had a mild case of the virus, experience symptoms long after their initial recovery. Fatigue, heart palpitations, changes in lung function, muscle weakness, memory loss, impaired concentration, myopathy, brain fog, depression, and anxiety are among the long list of possible lingering effects some COVID-19 survivors experience. Dr. Ellen W. Price, DO at Family Health West, knows that with any type of debilitating illness, rehabilitation is necessary. While we continue to learn more about the lingering effects of COVID-19, particularly regarding the lasting consequences of the disease, difficulties can be anticipated. “If not addressed early, these problems may persist for months or years,” said Dr. Price. “It’s especially important to be treated in a multidisciplinary fashion to get patients back on track.”

POST COVID-19 RECOVERY TREATMENT (CONTINUED)
Post-COVID recovery and rehabilitation require much more than a blanket solution. This is why the Family Health West Post-COVID Recovery program addresses a wide range of deficits caused by COVID-19, among various groups of patients. For some, recovery could mean overcoming post-intensive care syndrome following a prolonged inpatient hospitalization or illness at home. This can look like deconditioning from being bed-bound, or PTSD from a neardeath experience. “Deconditioned state is an issue that occurs when someone is bed-bound for a week or so,” said Dr. Price. “It can take weeks to recover muscle strength and from electrolyte imbalance.” Deconditioning might occurs in many of the young COVID survivors in Mesa County who experienced only minimal illness. The Mount Sinai Health System in New York City reports that the majority of patients they’ve treated for lasting symptoms are between 20 and 40 years old and that they are most often women and have no known underlying health conditions. Patients with lingering effects of Covid-19 who were previously high functioning can have problems with cognitive delay, exercise tolerance, and fatigue. They might feel confused and have difficulty planning. Some of these problems can be improved with speech therapy and counseling to target what the difficulties are and how to isolate and treat each issue, other difficulties might be mitigated by an exercise training program. Stacey Mascarenas, Public Relations Director for Family Health West, has felt “off” ever since she became ill with the virus in August. Having no idea how she contracted it, the virus took its toll. What started as symptoms similar to a sinus infection, later snowballed into difficulty breathing, a racing heart, dizziness, and lasting headache. Months later, Mascarenas still battles a constant dull headache, fatigue, and lost sense of taste. “Even after being cleared to return to work, I didn’t feel 100 percent—I still don’t feel 100 percent. I felt defeated,” said Mascarenas. “But with the introduction of this new recovery program, I have direction and hope.”

Family Health West provides intervention beginning with a thorough assessment and individualized treatment plan that will help each patient maximize their function and quality of life. Careful consideration of the rehabilitation and the environment in which it is performed, at-home telehealth or outpatient care, is taken to ensure that all patients recover as completely as possible. “Our team approach to COVID-19 recovery provides you with resources and guidance to address all aspects of your health,” said Bill Cummins, Associate Vice President of Business Development and Rehabilitation. Family Health West’s Post-COVID Recovery Team gives patients access to specialized physicians in neurology, physiatry, and pain management with hopes of better recovery outcomes. “This means you shouldn’t ignore any physical or cognitive changes,” said Cummins. Patients who receive a post-COVID assessment from Family Health West will have access to Individualized care plans and comprehensive rehabilitation services involving an interdisciplinary team including respiratory therapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, physical therapists, and exercise physiologists, pain specialists, neurologists, psychologists, and physiatrists. Once the design is drawn out, they send it to a specialized design team, who will in return give Mesa Jewelers a computer-aided rendering.
