John Atencio Trunk Show Mesa Jewelers at 444 Main Street in downtown Grand Junction hosted a Trunk Show showcasing artistic jewelry created by Colorado designer John Atencio. He took only one elective at Colorado State University, jewelry-making. Soon after, John found himself shopping for engagement rings, but found them all to be somewhat uninspiring. From there, the rest is history.

A visit to the hardware store for some elf supplies, a drop-in at the museum to stay connected to the past, and a relaxing visit at the Craig Art Gallery made for an afternoon of festive frolicking for the two.

EFFORTLESS AND EFFECTIVE FAT-LOSS
ARTICLE JESSICA BROPHY | PHOTOGRAPHY
THE ZERONA Z-6 IS A NON-INVASIVE FAT-LOSS ALTERNATIVE, NOT JUST ANOTHER EXERCISE AND DIET PLAN. The laser reaches into the fat cells allowing you to naturally metabolize your fat faster, so you can see and feel measurable results. The laser is tested, safe, and effective; the best parts - no downtime and no negative side-affects. If you, like much of the population, have tried diet and exercise but still have stubborn areas of fat that just won’t go away, keep reading! We understand that when fat cells are enlarged, they can have negative effects on your health and wellbeing. However, killing, removing, or harming them is not ideal as they are important for the optimal functioning of the body. The answer is shrinking them with the Zerona-Z6 laser! The Zerona-Z6 laser introduces a temporary pore into the fat cell membrane, allowing the fatty tissue

OLORADO, IN MY OPINION, IS ONE OF THE GREATEST
STATES IN THE UNION. The reason I feel that way is because of the wonderous wilderness that is in this state: The beautiful mountains, the adventurous deserts, the wildlife, the plants, lakes, rivers, trails, and season colors. When one place can orchestrate all of those things, into the symphony that is Colorado, the opportunity for adventure is unmatched and it calls to those who seek it. Michael McKnight is one of those people who could not resist the call of the mountains in Colorado. They called, and he conquered.
“Colorado, in my opinion, is one of the greatest States in the Union. ” — C.W. Morgan
“You sure you need that second serving of mashed potatoes?” Someone called out to Mike. Mike was overweight all through grade school and into high school and would get fat jokes directed at him on a regular basis. “I just got tired of the jokes,” McKnight said, “So between my freshman and sophomore years of high school, I decided I would only eat food according to the serving size, and I would run a mile every day. that summer.” He told me how some friends didn’t even recognize him during the start of his sophomore year. As time wore on, he was able to maintain his weight and fitness. When Mike was 21 he caught the running bug and had walked onto the Utah State University track team. But during that same year, Mike was skiing in Utah when he bit off more than he could chew and crashed, shattering his L1 vertebrae. After surgery - two rods and nine screws later - the doctor told him not to even think about running for a year or more. He could start swimming in seven months, but needed to focus on physical therapy. Still, he felt well enough to push himself harder than his prescribed PT. Soon he was walking one mile; then to his own surprise, six miles with no additional pain. Mike then started running, and found that he still had no new pain, only three weeks after surgery! Remarkably, after only six weeks, he ran a full 10K. CONTINUED >

LOCAL LIMELIGHT (CONTINUED)
Because of the skiing accident, Mike lost his job despite his swift recovery. Finding himself with no job, and not having college courses to take, he kept running. His love for running turned into a passion and he was able to meet others who ran but one friend, in particular, introduced him to UltraRunning and the Bear 100 race outside of Logan, UT. His friend talked Mike into pacing for him. The next year, Mike did the Bear 100 for himself. Mike McKnight’s passion for long-distance running continued to grow. He soon discovered the 200-mile races held in Washington State, California/Nevada (Tahoe), and Utah. The latter being the longest at 240 miles. Mike raced and completed all three races in one year and won with the fastest overall time for all three. He battled stomach problems on all three races which prompted Mike to change his diet switching to a low-carb regimen. That sparked other experiments Mike has done to improve his personal performance. After changing his diet and finding success with a low-carb intake as well as honing his training and rest intervals, Mike competed in all three 200 mile races. And won first place in every single race. McKnight was starting to gain fans and get noticed in the running community. It was after that, Mike became sponsored by Solomon Shoes as one of their professional athletes and he became friends with another Solomon athlete, Courtney Dauwalter.

Food was an issue too. “Nothing sounded good or appetizing,” Mike said to me. So I would eat heavy at my crew stops every 30 or so miles and not eat in-between. He described how, as the days wore on, his exhaustion increased. He even started hallucinating at times seeing monkeys driving and riding 4-wheelers. “That’s not real is it?” He asked his pacers. Not completely knowing the correct answer himself. “At mile 400,” Mike continued, “I strained my quad and it became very painful to keep going.” He said. Mike re-purposed a bandana and wrapped it around his leg to limp the last 100 miles. Mike completed the trail in seven days, 13 hours, and crushed the old record. He told me it was extremely difficult and painful and that he couldn’t do it without the support of his wife, friends, and teammates. When I asked him what he will improve on he said he would make an adjustment to his sleep schedule. “I’ll experiment with making those longer,” Mike said. I had to laugh at that comment. He said that he hopes to beat the fastest know time (43 days) of the Appalachian Trail. Which spans 2,200 miles of the Appalachian Mountains. 18
Grand Junction Lifestyle | January 2021
Mike has recently started to coach those who are interested in Ultra-Running or running in general. If you would like to get in touch you can follow him on social media @thelowcarbrunner or email him at mcknightcoaching@gmail.com. Now, you don’t have to be an intense runner like Mike to enjoy the wonders of Colorado. But you can’t deny the fact that Colorado is a special place to attract such attention from people all over the world. From the Colorado Trail, to the Maroon Bells, to our local Lunch Loops. Colorado is truly a place where people can find adventure.

ON THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET (CONTINUED) cost a slightly higher amount than some name-brand shoes, they will undoubtedly not only last longer but ease pain in the lower extremities. Years of improper footwear not only damage the joints, and bones in our legs and back, the long-term effects of poor footwear can extend to plantar fasciitis, restless leg syndrome, and worsen the condition of diabetics who have started to lose circulation and nerve function in their feet. To ensure proper support for the body, shoes must support all three bridges, something that poorly made shoes rarely accomplish. Mario’s store is stocked with shoes from 10 different vendors that are specifically chosen for their quality and bridge support. There were once shoes coming in from closer to 15 vendors, but due to the Covid restrictions on the U.S.A. and limited imports from other countries, some of the international vendors have been unable to continue to bring in inventory. However, even with a smaller inventory, Mario is confident he can find a shoe for any man or woman ranging in styles from athletic shoes to work shoes and anything in between that will keep them pain-free and happy for years to come. I, myself, work on my feet for anywhere from 6 to 12 hours a day and as someone who frequently hits over 20,000 steps daily, I can attest to the difference shoes can make. It is the difference between coming home comfortable and coming home with a burning sensation in my arches and shooting pain in my lower back. It is the kind of pain that when experienced, feels like genuine damage to the body. After chatting with Mario, I have realized that I may not have been paying enough attention to my feet and the shoes I put them in, and I will be paying him another visit! Next time you find yourself in the market for a new pair of shoes, or you have started to notice pain in your knees, hips, or lower back, consider taking a visit to 648 Main Street. Mario opens at 9:30 am, Monday through Saturday. He has a wealth of knowledge on the subject and can answer any shoe or foot problem questions you may have. One thing is certain: our feet take a lot of weight, strain, and stress every day. Whether your job is walking on your feet for hours at a time, or you just walk around the grocery store once a week, proper footwear can make a world of difference.

THE 3 MAJOR NUTRIENT GROUPS ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY JAMIE CHRISTENSEN
RO
S? WHAT ARE MACROS? Macros (short for macronutrients) consists of the 3 major nutrient groups we eat every day:
+ Proteins + Carbohydrates + Fats We have all looked at the nutrition labels on foods and drinks because they tell us calorie amounts – but do we ever look past “Total Calories”? Bodies function at an optimal level when we find the right balance between all 3 Macro groups. Our daily calorie intake within these groups will usually be determined by our activity level, age, and weight goals.

MAINTENANCE - You consume approximately the same number of calories as you burn in a day causing your weight to stay the same. BULK - You eat more calories than you burn. This creates a caloric surplus in the body, resulting in weight gain. However, if you eat and train efficiently, the weight will be mostly muscle. CUT - You burn more calories than you consume. This creates a caloric deficit in your body, and you lose weight. Macros are not a diet, but a lifestyle. Be in control. Take time to understand consumption within each of these major nutrient groups versus just looking at calorie count alone, and you will gain freedom within your food choices having less guilt. Our daily calories should never come from just donuts and sweets. HOW MANY CALORIES ARE IN MACRONUTRIENTS?

1. Pick a Problem to Address A leader can never become a catalyst until he or she first takes ownership of the problem they wish to solve. You cannot rally people to a cause that you aren’t willing to own, especially these days; people know when a leader is being half-hearted, and they don’t respect it. When you pick a problem to solve or a cause to rally around, you must have conviction in order to succeed. Over the years, I’ve learned that whenever I feel a sense of conviction about an issue, I need to start moving in the direction I believe I should go, even if I’m uncertain. Action creates ownership, and ownership creates credibility with people. And you need that

credibility because transformation cannot be done by one person alone—we all need people to join us on the journey.

Foundation for Wellness YOU NEED REST
DID YOU KNOW THAT THAT VALUING REST WOULD EXPONENTIALLY IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH? We tend to value productivity, work, and play over rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation. However, to optimize function and productivity, rest is a critical step. This is true not only for achieving our goals and aspirations but for our health as well.
