I HAVE LIVED IN THE VALLEY FOR 5 PLUS YEARS NOW, AND I HAD YET TO DINE AT THE STRAYHORN GRILL. I didn’t know what I was missing. On first sight, the western decor was welcoming and I noticed that the restaurant was very clean. The staff was attentive and polite, and the appropriately loud 90’s to early 2000’s country music matched the western decor of the restaurant. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes and fried Okra. It came drizzled in a fantastic white gravy that I was not surprised to learn was made in-house. The mashed potatoes are also cut, mashed, and seasoned in-house. Dessert was apple pie a-la-mode. I haven’t had pie that good in a long time. Don’t take my word for it. Go enjoy it for yourself!

FALL IN LOVE WITH THE ART OF NAILS

THIS FESTIVE BUFFALO PLAID NAIL DESIGN IS SIMPLER THAN YOU THINK AND UNQUESTIONABLY COZY. It is a timeless pattern that can be used for different seasons by changing the color scheme. It is also easy to customize with your own flair— which makes things fun and expressive. Here, I will show you one way to paint buffalo plaid, two-fingered (per hand) accent manicure using gel polish. This can also be done with regular nail polish, just be sure to wait for it to dry in between each step. The tools needed are a dotting tool, a striping nail art brush, and lint-free wipes. All of these items can be found on Amazon—I recommend the Winstonia nail art brushes. It is imperative that you use lint-free wipes to avoid fuzz ruining your work. To get this look, the polishes needed are shine and matte topcoats, along with black, white, brown, and two of your favorite fall colors. I chose to use orange and teal. In between colors, wipe off your nail art brush with the lint-free wipes. Last step, show off and enjoy! 16

Grand Junction Lifestyle | November 2021

BUFFALO PLAID NAIL DESIGN IS SIMPLER THAN YOU THINK AND UNQUESTIONABLY COZY. It is a timeless pattern that can be used for different seasons by changing the color scheme. Step one, paint your desired accent nails white. On the side (perhaps in a ceramic dish), mix shine top coat with the color you chose for the plaid. This will make it sheer, and we will use this for the thick light orange lines of the pattern. Step two, using your nail art brush, paint two thick vertical lines. Step three, paint thick horizontal lines. The amount you will paint will depend on how long your nails are. If you have short nails, you will have enough room to paint two or three. Try to have the lines evenly spaced. Step four, using the color from the bottle (no longer using the sheer mix), paint in the squares where the lines overlap. This nail is done for now. Step five, on your other accent nail, paint two horizontal curved lines (think the top of a heart) in the center of your nail with black polish.

Step six, using the sheer mix, paint evenly spaced horizontal lines under the curves. Step seven, paint evenly spaced vertical lines under the curves. Step eight, using the dotting tool and the color from the bottle, put a dot in every place the lines overlap. This creates a mini buffalo plaid. Step nine, paint it over with shine top coat to even things out. This will make it easier to layer the pumpkin with added details. Step ten, paint the outline of a pumpkin stem with black polish. Step eleven, fill the stem in with brown. Step twelve, paint two curved vertical lines within the pumpkin to give it dimension. Step thirteen, paint a leaf with your other fall color choice. This nail is done for now. Step fourteen, paint your remaining nails with your leaf color. This will tie it all together in a beautiful way. Step fifteen, top all your nails with a shine top coat to make them even and strong and then go over them with matte top coat. Matte finish is perfect for fall nail designs. It’s neat to have a business that is, at its core, all about helping people on both sides of that aisle. Enjoy our Q and A and get to know owner Mario Paul a little better. GJL: How many “hole-in-one” shots have you hit? (Mario is an avid golfer) MARIO: I’ve had one hole-in-one after playing golf for 22 years. It was at Redlands Mesa Golf Course on Hole 12 in November of 2018. GJL: What do you want our community to know about you? MARIO: I would like them to know that I have been married to my wife for over 15 years, have a 13-year-old son, and three dachshunds. Landmark Staffing is a business that I opened when I saw the need for a different kind of staffing agency, not just another temp company. I am always donating to charities when it comes to golf tourneys and I enjoy helping people get their foot in the door with a new job and helping businesses find the right candidates to fill roles for their company. 20

ACADEMY MORTGAGE COLORADO IS COLORADO FOR THE SHARE THE WARMTH WINTER CLOTHING DRIVE. It started at the beginning of October with collections at every Academy Mortgage location throughout Colorado. The locations collected a variety of winter clothing such as gloves, hats, and scarves and are distributed throughout the community the office resides in. This localized approach expanded both the reach and impact made by this donation drive, which saw tremendous success in its first year. 13 Academy Mortgage branches collected donations and are planning to distribute all the donated items out into the community during the beginning of this month (November), to ensure they are donated to those who need them most. Now is a great time to volunteer! Have a specific skillset? Think about how your collaboration may be the missing piece of a puzzle. Know how to fix a bike? Offer your services to help someone willing to collect donated bikes and tune them up! For some people, a bike may be the only form of transportation to help them get to and from work. WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING THING ABOUT MUTUAL AID PARTNERS FOR YOU AND THE VOLUNTEERS? On a weekly basis, we help people from all walks of life: from CMU students to war veterans, from those living at senior care facilities to our houseless neighbors. Some people that have never had to ask for help, are finding themselves with a desperate need to reach out to their community for the first time. Being able to work together and share solidarity with another human being is a lovely feeling, our volunteers truly care about this community and many have found purpose, including myself. It takes more than a village, it takes a community and with over 10,000 volunteer hours, out on the field and behind the scenes, we have shown that we ARE stronger together.

Day

originated

as

“Armistice

Day”

on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of

World War I. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—but

especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime. Thank you, Veterans!
