The Gold Standard of City Living Begins
Happy New Year and welcome to the premiere issue of Gold Coast City Lifestyle Magazine!
I’m beyond thrilled to introduce you to our brand-new publication — a celebration of the people, places, and passions that make Chicago’s Gold Coast and surrounding neighborhoods such a vibrant, inspiring community. This launch represents so much more than just the start of a magazine; it’s the beginning of a shared journey to connect, uplift, and shine a light on the best our city has to offer.
When I envisioned Gold Coast City Lifestyle, I wanted to create something that truly reflected the elegance, creativity, and diversity of this community — a platform where stories of local business owners, artists, philanthropists, and innovators could be told with heart and authenticity. Every page is designed to make you feel proud of where you live, while also introducing you to hidden gems right in your own backyard.
In this inaugural issue, you’ll meet some of the Gold Coast’s most dynamic businesses and discover new ways to live beautifully, dine intentionally, and explore joyfully. From local boutiques and wellness experts to culinary treasures and cultural events, this magazine is your invitation to experience Chicago living at its finest.
As we step into this new year — and this exciting new chapter — I want to personally thank our founding partners, contributors, and community members who believed in this vision from the start. Your support and enthusiasm are what make this magazine possible.
Here’s to fresh beginnings, inspired living, and a year filled with purpose, connection, and community.

A Fundae with Holly Garrard
Chicago’s
“It” Girl on Style,
Sustainability & Self-Care
Step inside Fundae, the eco-conscious luxury shoe brand redefining chic, customizable footwear for women. In her multifunctional showroom-meets-studio at Chicago’s Bridgeport Art Center, founder Holly Garrard shares what it takes to build a brand as a solo entrepreneur. Balancing material experimentation with intentional craft, she centers both women and the planet in every step. Between running a business, raising her children as a single parent, and pursuing her creative vision, Holly reflects on the journey that shaped Fundae—and how she protects her wellness so her work can thrive. Her studio mirrors Fundae ’s ethos: personalization, purpose, and preservation.
THE HEART OF FUNDAE: CREATIVITY AT THE BRIDGEPORT ART CENTER
Located on Chicago’s South Side, the Bridgeport Art Center is a vibrant hub of creativity. Set within a multilayered industrial space, it houses studios, galleries, event spaces, a sculpture garden, and a lively café. For Holly, the center is more than just a workspace—it’s a place where imagination, connection, and inspiration come together.
On the fifth floor, Fundae ’s studio radiates that same playful spirit. Sunlight streams through tall windows, bouncing off pastel hues and candy-colored objects. Columns of shoe boxes hold finished styles and

interchangeable toppings. Each detail is sundae-like, ready to be transformed. Most striking is the center of the showroom, where a cozy bumble-gum-pink living room setup evokes the feeling of stepping into the closet of a stylish, on-the-go businesswoman.
“I wanted Fundae to feel like a place where imagination comes first,” Holly says. “Where you can be playful, thoughtful, and still honor the planet.” Here, every design tells a story—not just of style, but of creativity, individuality, and care.
FROM CONCEPT TO COUTURE: BUILDING THE FUNDAE BRAND
Holly Garrard’s passion for shoes began long before Fundae. Growing up in California, she spent afternoons exploring boutiques with her mother and grandmother. A time when she also avidly attended the theater, soaking in moments of style and ritual. Ballet taught her the elegance of movement, while a 25-year media career revealed gaps

in the shoe market and gave her firsthand experience running a business as a single parent.
These experiences led her to create footwear that is fully customizable and designed for everyday women. What started as a personal project quickly became a brand grounded in sustainability and thoughtful design.
“I’d love to save the ocean, but I’d love to do it in stilettos,” Holly says. Even the name tells a story: a nod to her nickname, ‘Holly-day Fun,’ and the indulgence of a sundae. Fundae invites women to make their shoes— and their style—their own.
WELLNESS AND CREATIVITY: HOLLY’S BALANCED APPROACH
For Holly, creativity and wellness are inseparable. Every choice—from materials to design—reflects care for
both the wearer and the planet. She is candid about the fashion industry’s so-called “vegan” options, many made from petroleum or plastics, and sees Fundae as a different path: shoes crafted from vegetable-based materials, a corn-based foundation combined with recycled polyester. For her, what we wear should feel as intentional as what we consume.
Building a brand on her own is no easy feat. Yet Holly finds profound reward in the process. “The thrill of bringing something to life, despite resistance, and then seeing people connect with it—is truly inspiring,” she says. For Holly, the joy extends beyond the shoes themselves to the community that forms around them.
Wellness, she explains, goes far beyond sustainability—it’s about caring for oneself. Holly prioritizes slowing down, carving out time for yoga, movement, and quiet moments that restore energy and spark creativity. Travel also plays a role, providing fresh experiences that inspire her designs and give ideas room to grow.
LOOKING AHEAD AT FUNDAE’S FUTURE
Holly wants every woman to feel a spark of joy in her shoes—a confident stride, a cheeky high kick, a little extra sway in every step. She imagines her customers turning heads on the street, catching compliments, and carrying the same playful energy that fuels her designs.
As Fundae steps into the next chapter, Holly is expanding her retail presence without compromising comfort, craftsmanship, or style. Her shoes, crafted from recycled Maserati materials with an Italian manufacturer, celebrate bold design and unapologetic quality— the messy, thrilling journey included.
For Holly, the future is fearless: inventing daring new styles while keeping sustainability at the forefront. With Fundae, every step isn’t just fashion—it’s a statement, a joy, and a little bit of magic.
“The thrill of bringing something to life, despite resistance, and then seeing people connect with it— is truly inspiring.”
VAL OLIVEIRA
TURNING FAMILY TRADITION INTO WELLNESS SANCTUARY
Do people living in fast-paced cities ever truly know when to slow down? When the skyline is buzzing, when ambition becomes a kind of oxygen, when success demands everything—what does it mean to pause? To breathe? To honor the body that carries the dream?
If you ask Val Oliveira, CEO and Founder of Brazilian Lymph Spa, slowing down isn’t a luxury. It’s a lifestyle. It’s self-respect. It’s the grounding force behind every version of success worth having.
Today, her spa has quickly risen to prominence as a premier destination for lymphatic wellness, attracting an international roster of clients, influencers, and high-profile figures seeking sanctuary—and results. But the story behind the brand begins far from the bright lights of metropolitan America. It begins in Recife, Brazil, where Val’s identity took root long before her business did.
Growing up in this warm and culturally rich coastal city, Val was shaped by two powerful influences: her mother and her grandmother. Her mother, a restaurant owner, was affectionately known in their community as a “warrior”—a woman who built everything she had with grit, hospitality, and heart. This is where Val learned the earliest lessons of entrepreneurship. She learned that service is not a transaction. It’s a connection. It’s a responsibility. It’s the experience you create for others long after they walk out your door.
Meanwhile, her grandmother offered her something equally formative: a reverence for holistic healing. A healer in her own right, she taught Val that wellness begins from within. “My grandmother taught me that true beauty starts with how you care for yourself from the inside out,” Val recalls. Those teachings weren’t just memories—they became the compass she would follow years later.
When Val left Brazil after the 2009 recession, she carried those values like anchors. She arrived in America with limited English, a small dictionary, and a heart full of resilience. The path ahead was uncertain, but she trusted herself, trusted her calling, and trusted in the strength that came from generations of women before her.
And as she built her life in the U.S., one truth became clearer than ever: community over competition. “I’ve learned the power of community over competition,” she says—a philosophy that shaped her entire professional ascent. She collaborated with women in the wellness and beauty industries, shared knowledge generously, and supported the networks that supported her. It’s why giving back—to charities, to women, to her community— remains at the core of her brand.
In 2022, everything aligned. Brazilian Lymph Spa opened its doors, blending

Val of Brazilian Lymph Spa leads our January Health & Wellness
Brazilian lymphatic traditions with holistic practices and modern techniques. The result? A space that feels simultaneously luxurious and grounded—a must-visit destination for anyone seeking healing, sculpting, detoxification, or simply a moment to return to themselves.
Word spread with irresistible momentum. Clients described the experience not just as a treatment, but as a transformation—an awakening of energy, clarity, and connection to one’s own body. As demand surged, Brazilian Lymph Spa quickly evolved from a local hidden gem to an internationally recognized wellness destination.
Soon, Val and her team were being called to some of the biggest stages in culture and entertainment. Their presence became a quiet but essential ritual behind the scenes of the Met Gala, the Oscars, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, NFL events, and New York Fashion Week. For models, athletes, entertainers, and tastemakers, Brazilian lymphatic treatment became the secret weapon—part sculpting, part healing, part grounding.
Yet even as the brand expands and evolves, it remains rooted in the values that shaped Val’s life: warmth, care, community, and authenticity. Her spa is more than a place to look your best—it’s a place to feel your best. A place where modern-city tension melts into a Brazilianinspired ritual of release. A place that invites you to slow down, reset, and honor yourself the way her grandmother taught her decades ago.
So the question returns: Do people in fast-paced cities ever truly know when to slow down?
At Brazilian Lymph Spa, the answer is yes.
And under Val Oliveira’s vision, slowing down becomes not a pause, but a powerful return to wellness, to self, to the life you’re meant to lead.

UNDERSTANDING THE “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS
ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED
The New Frontier of Health
AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT
Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers?
Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids.
“Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.”
In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.
1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”
Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.
2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”
Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule:
• 10 hours before bed: No caffeine
• 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol
• 2 hours: No vigorous exercise
• 1 hour: No bright blue or white light
• 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times
Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.
3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”
Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.
4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”
Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.
5. “WHAT DOES FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE ACTUALLY DO DIFFERENTLY?”
Dr. Gillett: True functional medicine is root-cause medicine, not cookie-cutter supplement regimens. Imagine an older adult with cognitive symptoms who receives multiple prescriptions from a conventional doctor. A functional approach might uncover something entirely different: B12 deficiency, hearing loss, and vision impairment. Fix those, and cognition often improves dramatically with no medications required.
6. “WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE TEST THEIR HORMONES, AND WHICH TESTS MATTER MOST?”
Dr. Gillett: Most adults should get a baseline hormone panel between ages 18 and 28, or earlier if they have symptoms like poor sleep, unexplained fatigue, or changes in heart rate. A proper panel includes testosterone, estradiol, fasting insulin, CMP, lipids (including Lp(a)), A1C, morning cortisol, IGF-1, DHEA-S, vitamin D, and ferritin. These markers catch metabolic and hormonal issues long before symptoms become severe.
7. “WHAT LONG-TERM TESTS ACTUALLY HELP PREVENT DISEASE, NOT JUST DIAGNOSE IT?”
Dr. Gillett: Preventive care is evolving rapidly. For heart health, I recommend Coronary Artery CT Angiography (CCTA) because it detects soft plaque that calcium scores miss. Knowing this data early informs you what is needed to prevent a heart attack. Instead of asking your doctor “Do I need cholesterol medication?” ask “Do I have plaque in my arteries?”. Full-body MRIs can be useful too, but they often find harmless abnormalities, which can lead to unnecessary stress or testing. Always weigh the pros and cons with a clinician who understands your goals.
A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT
“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.”
By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.
“I believe that true innovation requires a commitment to constructive self-criticism to continuously raise the standard of care.”
