January 2025 PUBLISHER

Happy 2025! The New Year brings new beginnings and a reassessment of where we are in life. That's why January is our Health & Wellness issue. We have several stories this month that can help you take stock of your wellness needs in 2025. We spoke with two pain management experts, Dr. Honghui Feng and Dr. Michael Grille with Integrated Anesthesia Associates (IAA) about advances in pain mitigation that have been made in recent years. Both work in IAA's Pain Management Center, which specializes in alleviating chronic pain. We also have a story this month about Dr. Thomas McDonald, a surgeon with Orthopedic Associates of Hartford who specializes in foot and ankle medicine. His surgical acumen and deeply personalized approach to patient care define his medical practice. Since so many people at New Year's make a commitment to lose weight and eat healthier, we have a story this month about Positive Change Weight Loss, founded by Dr. Melissa Morales. A physician and health coach, Dr. Morales seeks to empower patients to control their health and she does so in a wellness setting that prioritizes empathy, individualized care and evidence-based treatment. Do you have a senior loved one in your life who could use a little extra care and maybe even some socialization? Steve Lamantini, who owns and operates Lion's Share Family Services, is redefining dementia care through personalized support and community integration. As a Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP) Steve provides assistance to and for seniors, including dementia-specific care techniques, including the crucial aspect of helping seniors maintain social connections. In our Home Update feature we spoke with the architects of Wolfworks, a home building company dedicated to creating homes that are not only energyefficient but promote the health of occupants. We also take a look this month at the work of the Healing Meals Community Project, which provides healthy, hearty meals for people facing a health crisis. We hope you enjoy this month's issue of Glastonbury Lifestyle Magazine and that your New Year is healthy and happy! GARY PERRELLI, PUBLISHER @GLASTONBURYLIFESTYLE

With an 18-year career dedicated to foot and ankle orthopedics, Dr. Thomas McDonald of Orthopedic Associates of Hartford (OAH) is distinguished for his medical expertise and the profound human connection he fosters with each patient. A family legacy of healthcare professionals influenced Dr. McDonald’s journey into medicine. He followed in his father’s and brother’s footsteps, along with their stories of healing and helping. The mechanical appeal and craftsmanship of orthopedics, witnessed during his medical school years, firmly set his path. “It was a total knee replacement surgery I observed that did it for me,” Dr. McDonald recalls. “The tools and the precise mechanics involved felt like carpentry, which I had done before. There was something profoundly satisfying about that.” After his residency at the University of Connecticut, he specialized in foot and ankle surgery during his fellowship, where he learned the importance of maintaining perspective and understanding when dealing with patients undergoing long, often painful recoveries. “You can’t lose your sense of humor,” he was advised by a mentor who exemplified the balance of expert care with compassionate interaction. Today, Dr. McDonald practices at OAH, a leading group with 28 physicians, including four specializing in foot and ankle surgery. “It’s a premier destination for orthopedic care,” he remarks, emphasizing the practice’s comprehensive support structure, which enhances surgical outcomes and patient recovery.

“I believe in empowering One of the most exciting advancements in the field is the evolution of total ankle replacement technologies. He reflects on the progress from initial failures in the 1970s to the current fourth-generation implant technologies that offer new hope to patients suffering from severe ankle arthritis. “It’s one of the most exciting things that I do because patients do so well with it,” he states, highlighting the transformation he witnesses in patients’ lives post-surgery. His surgical acumen and deeply personalized approach to patient care set Dr. McDonald apart. He is known for taking the time to discuss all aspects of treatment and helping patients understand their conditions and choices. This educational approach is critical, especially in a field where the physical implications of surgery are significant and often daunting for patients. “I believe in empowering my patients with knowledge. It’s about making healthy choices together, choices that lead not just to recovery but to a better quality of life,” he emphasizes. Perhaps the most compelling aspect of Dr. McDonald’s practice is how he correlates his professional insights with personal experiences. Drawing parallels between the challenges of parenting and his professional role, he shares, “Being a parent has helped me appreciate the anxiety around taking care of oneself amidst a busy lifestyle. The same way I guide my children to make healthy choices, I try to help my patients make the same choices in their orthopedic care.” Beyond the technical aspects of his work, Dr. McDonald values the time he spends with patients, helping them navigate their healthcare decisions. Known for thoroughly discussing treatment options, he believes in educating and empowering patients about their conditions and the available surgical and conservative treatments. This approach builds trust and eases the anxiety that often accompanies orthopedic issues.

For those struggling with foot or ankle issues, his approach offers more than traditional medical treatment; it provides a pathway to making healthier choices and moving freely, with confidence and support. His message to anyone suffering is straightforward: “Come on in and talk! Positive Change Weight Loss CREATING A PATH TO BETTER HEALTH
Dr. Melissa Morales
ARTICLE BY BRIAN BOYER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAITLYN CASSO
28
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | H E ALT H + WE LLN E SS
At a time when obesity and chronic disease are still stigmatized, Positive Change Weight Loss has emerged as a compassionate, community-focused health practice committed to transformative wellness. Founded by Dr. Melissa Morales, a physician and health coach, Positive Change empowers patients to control their health in a health care setting that prioritizes empathy, individualized care and evidence-based treatment. “I treat excess weight as I would any other chronic disease, with the goal being the attainment of better health — not just a better-looking body.” Dr. Morales’ journey began long before she opened her practice in West Hartford. Growing up, she witnessed the painful impact of chronic disease in her own family. Her grandfather’s struggle with diabetes and the resulting complications were a firsthand lesson on how interconnected health issues can lead to suffering, which fueled her early desire to understand these ailments. “It was clear that a person’s environment can impact their weight and lead to other diseases,” Dr. Morales recalls. This awareness guided her into medicine and eventually inspired her to develop a practice that addresses obesity not only as a physical issue but as a complex interplay of genetics, environment and lifestyle. Positive Change focuses on giving patients the time and space to discuss their health concerns thoroughly. Dr. Morales tailors her program to each individual, beginning with an extensive hour-and-a-half consultation. This involves physical exams, a review of past medical records
and a lifestyle assessment to understand what barriers may be contributing to a patient’s weight challenges. She and her patients then set mutual goals, choosing sustainable methods to achieve healthier living. Her approach is designed to foster an epiphany with patients —a revelation that often marks a turning point in a patient’s journey to wellness. “One of the greatest things you can witness as a doctor is your patient having an ‘aha!’ moment that leads to a fundamental change. For many, these realizations result in improved cholesterol, normalized blood pressure, and, perhaps most importantly, restored confidence and self-esteem.” Dr. Morales’ passion extends beyond individual consultations. On a larger scale, Positive Change advocates for community initiatives that promote healthier living and supports legislative action like the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act, passed by Congress in 2021. The federal law seeks to improve access to obesity treatments for Medicare beneficiaries. “Members of our community can learn more or ask for congressional support by visiting the Obesity Action Coalition website,” she notes, encouraging community involvement in health advocacy. Positive Change also uses shared decision-making and motivational interviewing techniques to help patients find their internal motivation. “All goals and steps are decided upon together. I help patients identify their barriers to change, which can be the catalyst needed to take actionable steps.” Her approach is enhanced by Positive Change’s small patient load, allowing Dr. Morales to dedicate time to each individual—one of the rarest but most valuable resources in healthcare today. One of the most exciting upcoming initiatives at Positive Change is Dr. Morales’ foray into culinary medicine, a movement that emphasizes nutrition and home-cooking as tools for disease management and prevention. Addressing Chronic Pain Integrated Anesthesia Associates' Pain Managment Center Seeks Innovative Solutions ARTICLE BY EILEEN M. MCNAMARA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN HELMKE
As life expectancy rises, so too does the demand for effective healthcare solutions that improve quality of life—particularly in the realm of pain management. Chronic pain, often stemming from conditions such as arthritis, spinal degeneration, or injuries, poses a significant challenge, limiting individuals’ daily activities and independence. The field of pain management has evolved considerably, especially in the last decade, with innovations that allow for precise interventions without extensive recovery periods. At Integrated Anesthesia Associates Pain Management Center in Hartford and IAA's Old Saybrook clinic, Coastal Interventional Pain Management experts like Dr. Honghui Feng and Dr. MIchael Grille are at the forefront of this transformation, offering minimally invasive treatments that target pain’s root causes and enable patients to live active, fulfilling lives. From spinal cord stimulators to nerve modulation devices, these technologies empower patients to regain control of their lives without constant pain. “Quality of life is the core of pain management at IAA,” says Dr. Feng. He and Dr. Grille are dedicated to helping their patients restore function, independence, and a sense of normalcy. With over 10 years of experience, Dr. Grille brings a wealth of experience in perioperative and chronic pain management. He has seen pain management evolve into a distinct specialty centered on helping patients regain their independence and quality of life. “The expectation of what people want out of retirement years has changed significantly and pain management has become a very important part of care for aging populations,” says Dr. Grille. Dr. Feng, who has over two decades of experience as an anesthesiologist and pain management specialist, leads IAA’s new Old Saybrook clinic in advancing innovative pain management approaches.

He began focusing on a specialty in chronic pain management following a fellowship in Connecticut in 2001. Both doctors emphasize that pain management should be more than just symptom relief; it’s about understanding and treating underlying issues that impact a patient’s well-being. In the past, pain was treated primarily with medications, including opioids, often without a complete diagnosis. However, today’s approach, which includes moving away from opioids following the addiction crisis with such drugs, emphasizes careful diagnosis, collaboration with other healthcare providers, and a wide range of therapeutic options. One area where IAA has seen remarkable success is in the use of technology-driven therapies, such as neuromodulation techniques, including spinal cord stimulation. For conditions such as spinal stenosis—a common, painful condition among older adults—spinal cord stimulators and other techniques provide targeted pain relief without the risks of major surgery, Dr. Grille says. By modulating nerve signals with electrical currents, similar to how pacemakers regulate heart rhythms, these devices can alleviate pain with minimal invasiveness. According to Dr. Feng, this technology offers a breakthrough for patients who might otherwise face limited options, such as invasive spine surgery with a low satisfaction success rate. “We’ve seen great success with procedures that target specific pain sites, highlighting the impact these techniques have on reducing pain and enhancing function.” Other minimally invasive and targeted techniques, Dr. Grille says, have been particularly effective in treating chronic lower back pain—a prevalent condition that causes missed workdays and reduced productivity. “When you scan a patient’s back, you might see various issues, but not all of them are causing pain,” Dr. Grille explains. “A tailored approach allows us to create a plan that directly addresses the cause of pain.” IAA’s commitment to high-quality, integrated care is further strengthened through partnerships with the Bone & Joint Institute in Hartford and Middlesex Hospital, providing patients with a continuum of care. Whether it’s through physical therapy, diagnostic imaging, or advanced interventions, patients benefit from a collaborative team of experts at IAA, which accepts all forms of medical insurance. IAA is reaching more patients who need effective, non-opioid pain management solutions, and proudly accepts all insurance plans in order to best accommodate the insurance needs of patients. Dr. Honghui Feng Dr. Feng has been treating Connecticut patients with chronic pain for over twenty years. He completed his fellowship and residency at Harvard Medical School. A board-certified anesthesiologist and interventional pain management specialist, he is respected as a pioneer of cutting-edge, non-opioid pain therapies. Prior to founding CIPM, he led the anesthesia and chronic pain practice at Lawrence and Memorial hospital for twenty years.

Lion’s Share Family Services Providing Help, Care and Socialization For Seniors With an Emphasis on Dementia Care Steve Lamantini, the founder of Lion’s Share Family Services, is redefining dementia care through personalized support and community integration. As a Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP) Steve has completed rigorous training focused on dementia-specific techniques, brain function, and medications, bringing specialized knowledge to the elder care he provides through his company. With a background in criminal justice and extensive experience in dementia care, Steve can meet the unique needs of individuals with dementia, particularly through services that prioritize dignity, independence, and personalized social experiences. Dementia care has become an essential part of the services Steve provides through Lion’s Share Family Services. Dementia care goes beyond basic assistance, he says. It requires a deep understanding of how to maintain the social and emotional well-being of those affected. Steve’s philosophy centers on bringing joy back into his clients’ lives by reintroducing them to meaningful activities in ways that honor their limitations. For example, if a client once enjoyed fishing but can no longer manage the physical demands, Steve says, he might take them to a fish hatchery to replicate that enjoyment in a simpler, more accessible way.

“Socialization is one of the most important aspects of care,” he emphasizes. “My specialty is figuring out what they enjoy or used to enjoy and making that part of their lives again.” Steve also addresses another often-overlooked aspect of dementia care: the practical and logistical needs of his clients. His services frequently involve problem-solving tasks, such as coordinating home repairs, working with contractors, and organizing personal errands. Recently, he helped a new client take her car for service, manage emissions testing, and arrange for a railing installation at her home. His hands-on assistance with these tasks ensures that his clients can maintain a safe and functional living environment, reducing their families’ stress. For clients and their families, Steve’s extensive network and trusted relationships with local contractors, service providers, and community members are invaluable.
Steve Lamantini
His dedication has saved clients time and money. He recalls a recent bathroom renovation for a client, where his connections saved her nearly $9,000. “I’m very protective of the people I take care of,” he says, underscoring his commitment to securing trustworthy and cost-effective solutions for his clients’ needs. One unique service Steve offers is taking clients out into the community for recreational and social experiences—an aspect that is often challenging for families to manage on their own. He recently received a call from a woman whose husband, currently in a rehabilitation center, simply wanted to go out for breakfast. Steve was able to make that outing happen, providing companionship and support while giving the client a much-needed change of scenery.
Steve Lamantini provides his clients with travel services.
His care approach is guided by compassion and a deep understanding of how important it is for people with dementia to feel connected, valued, and respected. Through Lion’s Share Family Services, Steve’s dementia care is tailored to empower clients, helping them feel a renewed sense of purpose and dignity. Grounded in both knowledge and empathy, this approach allows individuals with dementia to stay engaged with the world around them, maintain cherished activities, and live with as much independence as possible. Wolfworks: High Performance Homes ARTICLE BY KYLE CRUZ
PHOTOGRAPHY BY WOLFWORKS
A PATH TO HEALTHIER LIVING Our homes are more than just places to live—they’re environments that have a profound impact on our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. From the quality of light to the air we breathe, indoor spaces play a critical role in shaping our health.

Wolfworks, a team of mission-driven architects and builders, is dedicated to creating homes that are not only energy-efficient but promote the health of occupants. By prioritizing features that improve air quality, temperature regulation, and natural light, they help homeowners experience a healthier, more sustainable way of living. CLEANER AIR: THE POWER OF AIR TIGHTNESS AND VENTILATION Traditional homes often have air leakage, allowing dust, allergens, and outdoor pollutants to enter. High-performance homes prevent this by creating an airtight building envelope, which helps keep unwanted pollutants outside while maintaining consistent indoor temperatures. Wolfworks performs a series of tests to assess interior air tightness —whether it’s a new build or renovation. For remodels, Wolfworks establishes a baseline by testing air leakage, and developing a plan to seal gaps and improve insulation. This ensures that the home’s mechanical systems work efficiently, reducing energy cost and usage. For new construction, multiple blower door tests are performed during the building process to identify air leaks before they are hidden behind walls. If a home achieves a high level of air tightness, Wolfworks recommends installing a Mechanical Ventilation system like an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV). An ERV works by exchanging stale indoor air with fresh, filtered outdoor air, while recovering heat from the outgoing air to preheat the incoming air.
A home designed by Wolfworks.
This balanced ventilation system improves indoor air quality and helps maintain comfortable temperatures and humidity levels—especially important for those with respiratory conditions like asthma or allergies. FOSSIL FUEL FREE FUTURE: COMBUSTION-FREE HOMES Another significant factor in a high-performance home is eliminating harmful combustion by-products. Gas appliances, oil heating systems, and other fossil-fuel-powered devices release pollutants like carbon monoxide, particulates, and moisture into the home. Wolfworks is committed to creating all-electric homes that are free from combustion-based systems, replacing traditional heating methods with energy-efficient heat pumps for both heating and cooling. Induction ranges and cooktops are also recommended as replacements to gas ranges. By making the shift to all-electric homes, Wolfworks reduces indoor air pollution while improving energy efficiency. And for homeowners looking to further reduce their carbon footprint, solar power is often incorporated to generate clean energy, reducing electricity costs and benefiting both your mental well-being. NATURAL LIGHT Providing natural light and views that elevate our mood is another critical job our homes should provide. Spaces that support personal and social well-being, along with being well lit can reduce stress, improve sleeping habits, and increase alertness and cognition. Wolfworks homes integrate natural light in a way that enhances the aesthetics and health of spaces. Large windows and strategically placed openings create seamless connections between the indoors and outdoors, allowing sunlight to f lood rooms. ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY: BUILDING FOR A BETTER FUTURE High-performance homes are also about aligning with environmental sustainability. Wolfworks is deeply committed to minimizing its impact on the planet by using responsible building practices, sustainable materials, and energy-efficient systems. Their approach to design and construction not only reduces a

home’s carbon footprint but also ensures long-term health benefits for occupants. “When we show people the homes we design and build, we hope they leave thinking ‘Why isn’t every home built this way?’” says co-owner Kyle Cruz. By focusing on air quality, energy efficiency, and natural light, high-performance homes create a living environment that enhances the health of their occupants while reducing environmental impact. Healing Meals Community Project Nourishing Community & Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders ARTICLE BY LUCINDA JAMISON PHOTOGRAPHY BY HEALING MEALS
At Healing Meals Community Project, three beliefs stand as cornerstones of the nonprofit’s mission: 1. Food truly is medicine, and nutritious meals are crucial to healing body, mind, and spirit. 2. Empowering youth with the joy of serving others creates a better future for all. 3. The strength of a supportive community is vital, and collectively, we can always do more. The group’s mission inspires the Healing Meals team as they prepare nourishing, organic meals for those facing health crises, all prepared by youth volunteers working alongside adult mentors and professional chefs. “The youth volunteers handwrite caring message cards that are included in each meal package,” says Ayelet Connell, Program and Education Manager. “A dedicated crew of volunteer ‘Delivery Angels’ then ensures the delicious and nutritious meals are delivered directly to each client’s door.” Since 2016, Healing Meals has delivered 185,000 meals to 2,700 people across more than 70 Connecticut towns. This year, they are on track to serve more than 40,000 meals to about 500 people. “Your support can help us reach even more families in need.,” says Sarah Leathers, the nonprofit’s founder and CEO. Visit healingmealsproject.org, or call 860-2645864, for more information, to donate or to volunteer with the organization.
Healing Meals volunteers write notes that will accompany each donated meal.
