The Health & Wellness Issue Happy 2024! We’re kicking off the New Year with an issue that focuses on health, both of the mind and the body. We have a story this month about an innovative business here in Glastonbury, D-Fine Mind & Body Wellness that melds fitness and wellness and unique approaches to help clients see faster fitness results. In our “Inspiring Others” feature, we share the story of local resident Chris Gathers’ battle with brain cancer, how he’s managing it, and how his experience led him to start an inspirational Instagram page, where he logs his messages of hope on a regular basis. If you have kids in a local sports program, or you’re an athlete concerned about your foot and ankle health, you’ll want to read our story about Dr. Kimberly Inocco, a board-certified podiatrist, who recently joined the staff of Vale Foot and Ankle Surgery on Hebron Avenue and the expertise she brings in minimally invasive surgery for patients of all ages. We also visited with officials of the American School for the Deaf. The nationally-renowned organization, which for over 200 years has set the standard for advocacy for the deaf, hearing impaired and DeafBlind community, recently won a federal grant to study and improve communication access for that community. Nearly three years ago Chris Gathers had a bout of strange symptoms and came to the frightening conclusion that he might be having a stroke or an aneurysm The actual diagnosis for his piercing headaches, out-of-body feelings, and vision problems was even more devastating than what he imagined: A brain tumor. He envisioned a worst-case scenario: A two-year life span if surgery and other treatments didn’t work. “I thought ‘My life is over and I’m dying.’ At 47 I thought I’d just figured out life. I was in a good spot with my kids, my work and my personal life.” Today, Chris is mostly cancer-free after surgeons at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston removed 98 percent of the golf ball-sized tumor - a type of cancer called oligodendroglioma - and doctors are currently treating the remaining cancer with a targeted therapy called Tibsovo. He undergoes an MRI scan every three months to monitor the area, but the tumor has not returned. “My long term prognosis now is very good. It’s always possible it could return, but my oncologist keeps a close eye on it with a brain scan every three months and they are treating it like a chronic illness.” He and his wife, Nancy, have two children, 15 year-old Brooke, and Ella, who is nine. The family has lived in Glastonbury for 12 years. His cancer, he says, has changed him forever. “To say that this has been a life changing experience would be an understatement.

I made the commitment that I was going to live the rest of my life with as few regrets as possible, living a purpose-filled life of helping others.” As part of that commitment Chris In March of 2022 (exactly one year after his surgery) began an Instagram page, @CulminationPoint, to share his story via video posts. In them, Chris seeks to convey his message of hope and to inspire others, he said, to discover their untapped capacity for self-compassion, love, and patience. “Basically, to spread kindness from the inside out.” He posts almost daily to his Instagram page. “Recording my thoughts, while walking my dogs through various parts of town. I have been surprised by the love I have received back - gaining nearly 13,000 wonderful followers who are the foundation and support of this growing community. Some of his recent posts cover topics such as how to overcome feelings of vulnerabilit y and be more open in relationships, how to take control of your life

and feelings and how to grow emotionally during challenging times. “You’re not alone in feeling like you let the moments get by without you fully appreciating them. you’re not alone in thinking that certain relationships aren’t where they need to be, including with yourself,” he says in one of his videos on the page. “You’re not alone in being disappointed with some of the interactions you have with others. We try the best that we can and the best you can do is be mindful and aware of chances that you’ve missed and try to do better next time, if it all presents itself again.” He says he hopes his video messages help people, even if it’s only in a small way. “There’s been great reception to it and I hope my messages resonate. I’m not looking to change someone’s life, there are too many people out there who promise that, or think that. My job is to hopefully be the catalyst to the next step forward, even if it’s a small step, help someone bust out of inertia and start some sort of forward progress.” For more information on oligodendroglioma and it treatment, visit Oligonation.org

Joe Carabase, founder of D-Fine Mind & Body Wellness in Glastonbury, is pioneering a new way to manage stress and transform your body. “Traditional weight loss is broken. People are sick of following a super restrictive diet, taking another pill and or get invasive surgery only to end up worse off and frustrated.” Joe says. “Our holistic technologies accelerate the process so that you only have to focus on making a few lifestyle changes at a time.” Stress is at an all time high and must be factored into the weight loss process according to Joe. “Simply just working out more, dieting harder or surgery doesn’t tend to work long

Joe believes the focus should be on increasing your metabolism, rather than just what the scale says. “Weight loss happens as a byproduct of increasing your metabolism. Due to hormonal fluctuations and water retention, you can’t control weight. However we can manipulate your metabolism to respond faster. “Shoot, I was skeptical when I first learned of this technology. However after experiencing over a half inch reduction off my waistline before a natural bodybuilding show, I knew there had to be something to this.” It turns out, he was right. Joe believes in transforming your mental fitness in addition to your physical fitness. As a young boy, Joe was relentlessly bullied and developed very poor self esteem. “A big part of what drives me is to help people actually feel really good about themselves.” Joe says. FOR MORE THAN 200 YEARS ASD HAS BEEN A BEDROCK OF ADVOCACY FOR THE DEAF, HARD OF HEARING AND DEAFBLIND Founded in 1817 as the first permanent school for the deaf in the U.S., the American School for the Deaf (ASD) is the birthplace of American Sign Language and a national leader in providing comprehensive educational programs and services for deaf and hard of hearing students. Among deaf schools, ASD is known as the “Mother School,” providing an exemplary model educational program for the deaf community and serving as a springboard for trained and experienced educators in the field. Though originally located in Hartford, ASD has been located on an expansive campus on North Main Street in West Hartford since 1919. Today, ASD provides comprehensive educational services to over 500 students worldwide through an array of on and off-campus

ASD has never wavered in its mission to serve deaf and hard of hearing students— the school, its officials and its supporters also remain devoted to raising awareness about the needs of the Deaf community. That passionate advocacy received a major boost last year when ASD was awarded a $1 million grant to study and improve communication access among Connecticut’s deaf, hard of hearing and DeafBlind communities in educational and healthcare settings. “This grant is providing ASD the opportunity to become a vital community resource,” explains ASD Executive Director Jeffrey S. Bravin. “Through this work, we hope to effect positive change throughout Connecticut. The federal grant will help identify communication accessibility challenges

for deaf, hard of hearing and DeafBlind communities. The grant also calls for state and regional partners, such as the CT Association of the Deaf, Hear Here Hartford, and the CT Hospital Association, to work with ASD on a systems-wide approach to identifying and improving communication access in healthcare and education settings. “This grant will help us raise awareness about the obstacles the deaf, hard of hearing and DeafBlind encounter in healthcare settings,” Bravin said. “I’m challenging all presidents and CEOs of hospitals to sign a pledge to provide programs in their facilities that address our needs. I want them to be committed to improving communication access. We may be a small community, but we are a powerful community.” The communication access problems became particularly acute during the pandemic, Bravin said. For instance, deaf patients who sought out medical care for Covid-19 often couldn’t understand what

their health care providers were saying because they couldn’t read the lips of people wearing masks. While clear masks were available, many hospitals and clinics didn’t provide them, perhaps because they cost more, he noted. “Is this about money or about life and death? We are trying to get the message out that it is time to treat the members of our community as equals.” The need for greater access to in-person America Sign Language interpreters is also evident, and part of this grant will work toward increasing interpreting services in hospitals. ASD is working to raise awareness about these critical issues through a comprehensive marketing campaign. Through the campaign, the school is communicating the important message that no one should be “lost in translation.” No one should feel they are the subject of conversation, yet invisible. ROSEMARY PEAR M O C K TA I L INGREDIENTS ROSEMARY SIMPLE SYRUP • 1 cup cane sugar • 1 cup water • 3 sprigs of fresh rosemary ROSEMARY PEAR MOCKTAIL • 5 tablespoon pear juice • 1 tablespoon rosemary simple syrup • 1 teaspoon lemon or lime juice • sparkling water to taste

INSTRUCTIONS HOW TO MAKE ROSEMARY SIMPLE SYRUP Combine sugar and water in a pot and cook over medium heat. Cook until sugar is completely dissolved. Turn off heat and toss in rosemary sprigs. Cool Completely. HOW TO MAKE ROSEMARY PEAR MOCKTAIL Pour pear juice, rosemary simple syrup, lemon juice, and sparkling water. Add ice and garnish if desired.
