It’s officially spring, the days are finally warmer and longer and we’re all spending more time outside. Easter, which is April 9, is also a springtime holiday for Christians so we have a story on that most favorite of Easter traditions, decorating eggs and other fun activities. Glastonbury Hires New Town Manager The Town of Glastonbury has appointed Jonathan Luiz, former Town Administrator for Weston, CT, as the new Town Manager, following the retirement of longtime manager Richard J. A residential design waterfront lot, or a parcel of land with a water view, is one of the most sought after and costly types of real estate. In Connecticut, we are blessed with many lake, shore, and riverfront opportunities to obtain a coveted view of the water. Such properties present unique considerations for a home's design, which should be exploited to reap all the benefits a waterfront home has to offer. Often, an existing home is purchased solely for its location on the water, and is then raised or substantially remodeled to realize the full potential of the site.

ROOMS WITH A VIEW It all begins with the view. If the property adjoins the water, the orientation of the home may seem obvious. However, views often conflict with optimum sun exposure, access to the property, or a neighboring structure. The view of the home from the water itself is also an important detail and often overlooked. Northerly views are best addressed with a judicious use of windows to minimize heat loss in winter months. For a site that needs height to glimpse a view, a technique often seen on Nantucket Island may be utilized: the upper stories contain

These are only a few of many strategies an architect can employ to make the most of a glorious view, or coax one out of a property with view potential.

IN WHAT STYLE SHOULD WE BUILD? Waterfront architecture offers many possibilities to build in a style compatible with a client's tastes and lifestyle. The northeastern seaboard presents many exceptional examples of the "shingle style" to borrow from; an organic and rambling form of shingled building design fashionable in the late 1800s and still valid today. For a more contemporary appearance, the clean lines and sensible forms of nautical architecture and shipbuilding have often served as inspiration for more modern designs.

Whatever your tastes, a drive to explore the waterfront communities near your site will provide plenty of ideas. A good architect will take all of these elements into consideration to create your own unique contribution to the waterline.

WATER, WATER, EVERYWHERE And wind as well. Waterfront properties are far more exposed to the elements than their inland counterparts. The open expanse of river, lake or sea exposes the home to unbroken gusts of wind, horizontally driven rain, and periodic flooding. Preparing for and expecting the worst is mandatory. State requirements necessitate specially rated windows and installation practices in areas designated particularly vulnerable to hurricane damage. Roofing, siding and foundation systems should be selected and designed to resist moisture, ground water and wind driven rain. These factors make waterfront homes more expensive to build. A successful construction project is best assured by seeking out a designer and builder with experience in dealing with such adverse conditions. What is the reward for undertaking such effort and expense? A waterfront home gives you a view you will never tire of, the

Northeast Performance Institute, an exciting resource for the Glastonbury athletic community, is a comprehensive sports institute that its founder and director, Peter Egazarian, created to deliver across-the-board training for golf and baseball players of all ages, abilities and genders. “Moving to Glastonbury, we’re now in the building with The Apex and Connecticut Physical Therapy Specialists, and through this consortium, we’ve started gaining traction in the sporting community more organically,” Peter says. “We’re giving people new and better ways to accomplish their goals and enjoy what they’re doing. The primary goal of Northeast Performance Institute is to help people leverage technology to simplify their technique and their thought process so they can perform better."

NPI sets a high bar for sports training with its indoor facility in Glastonbury featuring three data-monitoring studios. With a leading-edge focus on technology-driven athletic development, the stations employ the TrackMan radar system to track, measure and record the location, trajectory, and spin of hit golf balls, baseball balls and hockey pucks. Other technologies include 3D Motion Capture and Bio-Mechanical analysis. These technologies offer the most accurate and advanced feedback on players' speed, form and biomechanics. Biomechanics and junior development are two of the areas Peter is seen as an expert in the industry. One of the Institute’s specialties is working with young athletes with long-range sports career plans. They also assist college-bound athletes with recruitment opportunities through Peter’s widespread network of college coaches and they help students and parents navigate the recruitment process. Peter provides private coaching services via a small competitive group program for inclined kids 5-15-year-olds. “These are competitive kids who play US youth tournaments or want to do that, the highly accelerated type of young person,” he said. “When they graduate from that program, they go on to a more competitive teen program and begin a stronger level of tournament planning requiring more services outside of coaching. A complementary service to this is communications representation to help young athletes manage their image in marketing and social media. We offer it all for these kids, giving them a roadmap to stick to their goals.” CONTINUED >

Among their other services, NPI creates corporate events to empower professional growth through golf, Travelers Insurance being one of their steady clients in this area. They also partner with community organizations to provide free or low-cost golf programs to inner city and disadvantaged youth. Peter and his team also train executives at the highest corporate levels. In February I flew to Florida and my outbound flight was delayed more than 5 hours because of the extremely cold weather. There was a family of five waiting in the airport with us. They had planned a Caribbean cruise to celebrate their son’s 16th birthday. As the hours dragged on from 8 a.m. to past noon with no end in sight for the flight delays, that poor family became more and more agitated that they would miss their 4:30 p.m. cruise ship in Florida. They were desperately calling the cruise line and getting no help. Most of us have either heard of or experienced this type of travel nightmare. It’s the type of vacation-gone-sideways experience that Glastonbury native Claudia Dawley helps travelers avoid. She recently started a concierge-style travel agency called The Stamped Passport Travel Co. The company curates personalized travel plans, tailored to each individual client and intended to assure they have the best experience possible, whether they’re traveling

near or far. We spoke recently with Claudia about her new venture.

1. WHEN AND WHY DID YOU START YOUR COMPANY? I have always been enthusiastic about travel. Over the years I have visited over thirty counties and have had the opportunity to experience so many amazing cultures around the world. It is so fun to immerse yourself in the areas you visit. Though it can be scary at first to let go of what you are accustomed to. I witnessed this firsthand during my time in the Peace Corps while stationed in Uganda. Whenever I tell people about my two-plus years in Uganda, they say things like “I could never do this,” or “It must have been scary.” Because of this, I thought how fun it would be to help people overcome this feeling. Though my business just opened this year I have been involved in the travel industry for many years. I have always been interested in owning my own business and felt now was the right time to embark on this journey. CONTINUED >

2. IN AN AGE OF ONLINE BOOKING SITES, WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO WORK WITH A TRAVEL AGENT?

Travel can be easier with the help of a knowledgeable agent.

It is important to work with a travel agent because the client is saved from the hours of research that it takes to put all the components of a trip together. I create unique custom itineraries for each client. I use my trusted relationships within the industry to create the best trip possible for the client. I can help clients avoid costly mistakes. Travel rules change often and I keep the clients informed. I am the client’s advocate from beginning to end, and help handle issues that may arrive during travel.

3. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST POPULAR PLACES PEOPLE WANT TO TRAVEL RIGHT NOW? My business primarily focuses on international travel. I specialize in Europe, SubSaharan Africa and the Caribbean/Mexico. Europe is currently very popular. I am seeing a lot of requests for Italy, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and France.

4. YOUR SERVICE ALSO PROVIDES “CURATED TRAVEL EXPERIENCES’’ FOR CLIENTS. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? I tailor all vacations specifically to the client. I help research all the components of the trip and coordinate flights, transfers, hotels, tours, activities, and excursions. This can all be very overwhelming, especially when traveling to multiple destinations, so that is where I come in to help! I use my expertise, relationships and resources I have established in other countries to curate unique experiences. No two trips are the same. Passover starts on April 5, this year. The holiday is marked with feasts and desserts, including this sponge cake, from the "Little Book of Jewish Sweets," by Leah Koenig.

PA SSOV E R SP ONGE C A K E INGREDIENTS • 7 large eggs • 1 ½ cups sugar • 1 Tsp freshly grated orange zest • 2 Tbs fresh orange juice • 1 Tsp vanilla extract • ¾ Cup potato starch • ¼ Tsp kosher salt • 1 ½ Tsp ground cinnamon

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 325. Separate 6 eggs, setting aside the egg whites. Crack the remaining egg into the yolks. Beat on medium speed until pale yellow and slightly thickened, 2-3 minutes. Gradually beat in 1 ¼ cup of the sugar, followed by the orange zest, orange juice and vanilla. Turn the mixer to low speed and gradually add the potato starch, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. Add the salt to the egg whites and beat until glossy peaks form, 3-5 minutes. Gently fold into the egg yolk batter until fully combined. Pour batter into an ungreased 10-inch tube pan. In a small bowl combine the cinnamon and remaining sugar and sprinkle on top of batter. Bake 50-60 minutes until batter springs back when gently pressed. Do not open oven earlier as cake could deflate. Remove from oven, invert cake onto cooling rack, using a sharp, serrated edge knife to loosen cake from pan, cutting around outer and inner perimeters of the tube pan. Slice and serve at room temperature. Can be refrigerated, and covered, for up to one week.
