It’s July and we’re entering the Dog Days of Summer. It’s the time of year when many people either go on vacation or seek out cool spots and outdoor activities close to home. That’s why this is called our Summer and Adventure Issue. We’re so lucky to live in a region where there are so many things to see and do during summer. Check out our Local Experiences feature on Page 16 for a round up of places to visit to either cool off or have fun. And don’t forget to check out our calendar of events on Pages 52-54 for even more ideas for things to do! We have several concert venues in the state operated by Live Nation, which offers VIP access if you’re looking for an exclusive event experience for your family, friends or employees. Live Nation operates the Xfinity Theatre in Hartford, the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater in Bridgeport and the Toyota Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford. We also have a story in this issue on a new wedding and event venue along the Connecticut River in nearby Portland. Workers at the new River’s Edge at Saint Clements Marina are putting the finishing touches on the stunning contemporary rustic event space that overlooks the river. There are plans for a Sunset Pier, which would allow guests to access River’s Edge by boat. This month we also have a profile on one of Glastonbury’s native daughters, Kadji “Kretzmer” Anderson. Her family has roots here that reach back nearly 100 years and Kadji has parlayed her experiences in home flipping, finance and property management and her deep knowledge of the local real estate market into a career as a Realtor. She works with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services New England Properties which has offices at 2790 Main St. Looking for a way to cool off this summer? We have two terrific and easy fresh drink recipes in our Culinary Creations feature. Also in this month’s issue we have a feature on the quirky and fun Brimfield Antique Flea Markets as well as a look at the history of the iconic Connecticut River Ferry that runs from Glastonbury to Rocky Hill. Riverfront Music Series Returns This Summer The Glastonbury Riverfront Music series will kick off this year on July 13. Fresh Summer Drinks COOL OFF WITH COCKTAILS THAT ARE HIGH ON FLAVOR AND FEATURE FRESH INGREDIENTS

Is there anything more satisfying than a freshly made cocktail, preferably sipped on a deck overlooking the water? Here are two easy-to-make drinks that are created without pre-made mixes and which rely on natural ingredients for their sweetening element. Both are classic cocktails that have been around for decades - the margarita and the whisky sour. In our take on the classic margarita we’ve spiced up its sweet and sour flavors with muddled jalapenos. Add a bit less for a subtle bit of heat, more if you like it extra spicy! The whisky sour recipe is a version of the drink created in the early 1900s and which the New York Times calls a Gold Rush. It is essentially a whisky sour made with honey syrup instead of sugar. If you’ve ever had a whiskey sour from one of those store-bought sour mixes, this version is going to be an eye-opener.

J A L A P E Ñ O M A R G A R I TA : INGREDIENTS • One ounce freshly squeezed lime juice • One ounce agave syrup • Two ounces tequila • One small jalapeño, sliced into rounds • Salt (optional) DIRECTIONS Place four to five of the jalapeño rounds in the bottom of a glass or a muddling stone. Crush the pepper pieces, using a splash of lime juice to break down the skin and seeds. Put the muddled jalapeño into a shaker with ice and add the lime juice, agave syrup, and tequila. Shake well and pour into a glass with a salted rim. Garnish with a lime wedge. A fresh jalapeño margarita.

The whiskey sour is a vintage drink made new again.

WHISK Y SOUR INGREDIENTS • One ounce warm water • Three ounces honey • Two ounces whiskey or bourbon • 3/4 ounce honey syrup • 3/4 ounce fresh squeezed lemon juice

DIRECTIONS For the syrup, place the honey and warm water in a sealed container and shake well until smooth. Then, pour whisky, syrup and lemon juice into a shaker of ice and shake well. Pour into a rocks glass or strain the cocktail into a glass with one large ice cube. You can also switch this sour recipe up in winter by substituting the honey mixture for maple syrup and sprinkling a bit of cardamom on top before serving, straight-up.

River’s Edge at Saint Clements Marina THE NEW WEDDING AND EVENT VENUE IS SET TO OPEN IN AUGUST

Inside River’s Edge at Saint Clements Marina the sunlight sparkling off the Connecticut River is almost as brilliant as the light from thousands of crystals that make up the chandeliers hanging from the two-story ceiling. The tall windows in the cavernous room afford breathtaking and panoramic views of the river and the green rolling hillsides around it. Overhead, massive wooden trusses line the ceiling.The beams, along with the huge crystal chandeliers, imbue the space with a rustic contemporary feel. That aesthetic is part of the purposeful design of River’s Edge, which has a main event space of more than 4,000 square feet inside the overall 10,000-square foot facility. The exterior of the building is intended to mirror the design of Saint Clements Castle, a 19th century castle that sits on the hillside above River’s Edge.

“We were able to capture that feel of the architecture of the castle,” said Amanda Delzio, director of marketing and communications. “It’s a very rustic-modern design in an open floor plan.” The design is a very intimate event space, with rustic and contemporary elements. Both facilities are located on a 92-acre property in Portland (though technically River’s Edge is located just over the town line in East Hampton). St. Clement’s Inc. operates both the event spaces at the main estate and River’s Edge at Saint Clements Marina. True to its name, River’s Edge, sits on the banks of the Connecticut River. The wood and stone exterior resembles the castle and the contemporary elements inside include hardwood flooring. The sweeping oak central staircase leads to a balcony overlooking the main event space below. The upstairs also includes several private rooms for meetings and bridal and groom party chambers. The upstairs includes spacious lounge areas and two private wedding suites. Downstairs a large bar sits behind the grand staircase, with a sitting room

adjacent. Behind those rooms is a large kitchen at the back of the building. Outside, a stone walkway leads to a patio and a pier that juts into the river. “There are plans in the works that would allow couples to step right off the boat onto the Sunset Pier”, says Amanda. “The proximity to the Connecticut River makes this venue one of the most beautiful in the state.” The castle and River’s Edge are connected by a new private road that was built in 2006 between the two facilities. River’s Edge can accommodate up to 140 guests and outdoor venues are also available. The new facility is in addition to Saint Clements Castle, which hosts about 300 events each year. The castle has about 12,000 square feet of event space in two separate and distinct private spaces, The Waterford and Prince Edward suites. With a family history that stretches back nearly 100 years in Glastonbury, and through her own life experiences, Kadji “Kretzmer” Anderson brings a deep breadth of experience and knowledge of local real estate. A Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services on Main Street, Kadji (pronounced Katie) is one of 10 children who grew up on her family’s homestead on Weir Street in a home her father built. Her grandfather bought the land, in the Buckingham section of town, and moved there with her grandmother in the early 1930s. The 7-acre property was a horse farm and included an 1820s farmhouse where her father was raised. In 1960, using a portion of the property, her father erected their family home and in the late 1990’s, two additional homes were built on this property. Kadji says her experiences in local real estate and property management has given her valuable insights and knowledge of the region’s real estate market. She worked for a time with her dad, who renovated local homes, rented them out, and later sold them. She’s a managing partner of a local property management firm, KP Management LLC and she and her sister, Heidi Aivano, run Glawackus Properties LLC, a home-buying and renovation firm based on popular fixer-upper TV shows. “My past professional and personal experiences have prepared me to guide clients through all aspects of buying and selling real estate,” Kadji says. “My college degrees in finance and insurance keep me informed of current issues and taught me how to gather and interpret data. All of these skills, together with my deep roots here in Glastonbury, have proven critical to evaluating the market and finding value when buying, selling or investing in real estate.” CONTINUED >

She said she loves being a Realtor, a career she launched about five years ago, in part because of the challenges in navigating the sometimes tumultuous real estate market and for the thrill it brings when she helps clients find their dream homes. “I always loved real estate and I saw very successful realtors in town and I thought, wow, I want to do that! You can tell when you find your client that perfect house. They get a different look on their face and in their eyes and then you know, this is the house for them. At that point you do whatever it takes to support their dream and help them get that house.” Her personable and gregarious nature comes through not just in interpersonal relationships but also in her professional dealings. Some of her recent ads include things like “Orange You Looking For a Fabulous Realtor?” and includes a recipe for an Orange Julius Smoothie. A posting on her website includes a DIY project on revamping a fireplace. Even the name of the property management company she runs with her sister has a quirky and local twist. The Glawackus is a mysterious and legendary creature that stalked livestock in Glastonbury in the 1950s and 1960s in her childhood location of the Buckingham area of Glastonbury. The animal was renowned for its fierceness, a characteristic Kadji says she’s taken to heart. “The Glawackus is strong, It’s a force to be reckoned with and that’s what I am. I won’t let anything take me down.”

Billed as “America’s Oldest Outdoor Flea Market,” Brimfield, as it is commonly referred to, is about an hour’s drive away. It will be held July 12-17 and Sept. 6-11. Connecticut has two of the oldest ferries in the country, the Chester-Hadlyme and the Rocky Hill-Glastonbury ferries. The Chester-Hadlyme Ferry began service in 1769 and was called Warner’s Ferry. The current ferry, the Selden III, was built in 1949. The Rocky Hill-Glastonbury ferry, started in 1655 and was originally a small raft pushed using long poles. Today’s ferry, the “Hollister III,” is a flatboat towed by another craft. Both ferries are seasonal and operate daily. In Glastonbury, the ferry is accessed from Landing Lane. In Rocky Hill, it’s on Meadow Road. In Hadlyme and Chester the landings are on Route 148. The fee for each ferry is $5 per car on weekdays, $6 on weekends.
