LIFESTYLE LETTER
If it’s June, it’s summer! June is the official kick-off of summer season in New England. It’s also the month of Father’s Day, which we celebrate on June 19 this year. In tribute to Father’s Day, our June issue is dedicated to men and things they love! In this month’s issue we spent some time with Glastonbury’s Michael Vigeant, founder and president of GreatBlue Research, a national market research firm with offices at 20 Western Boulevard. He and his family live here in Glastonbury. Michael’s life story, and his successes, personally and professionally, were influenced by his battle with cancer as a child. His experience taught him a lot, he says, about how to be a better father and business leader and how to live your best life. For car lovers we have a story about the hot cars that are in production now for 2023. The annual New York International Auto Show featured several of the top vehicles that are in production and car lovers took a special shine to the Chevrolet Corvette, an American classic which has a new design for 2023. If you love golf (and we do!) you’re probably already looking forward to the 2022 Travelers Championship. We checked in with tournament officials for our look at this premier annual tournament and charity event that takes place at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell. This year marks a return to normalcy after disruptions wrought by Covid, and tournament officials are excited about the energy surrounding this year’s championship. Speaking of energy, want to save on your home’s energy bills? We spoke with Lantern Energy, an electric and energy conservation company that recently relocated its offices to 256 Oakwood Drive, about the services and programs it offers that can help slash your electric and heating bills. Need a haircut or a beard restyle? Roosters Men’s Grooming at 120 Hebron Ave., is an upscale barber shop where the stylists pride themselves on their signature men’s hair cutting expertise and their old-fashioned, hot-towel straight razor shaves. Also this month we have a recipe for a new way to grill steaks that results in a mouth-watering tender meal and a feature on how to use tropical plants to liven up your garden designs. We hope you enjoy our June issue and Happy Father’s Day to all you dads! GARY PERRELLI, PUBLISHER @GL ASTONBURYLIFEST YLE

Are you the kind of guy who wants more than a run-of-the-mill barber shop haircut? Roosters, a salon on Hebron Avenue, is an upscale grooming center for men, where you can get everything from a precision haircut to a classic hot-steam towel and a straight-razor facial shave. “What we offer here is more of a personalized experience, from the initial consultation to detailing the completed style with the right products for the client’s hair.” “says Eleni Tsombanos, manager of Roosters in Glastonbury. “We make sure it’s a one-of-a-kind experience, and that’s what keeps people coming back. We build relationships with our clientele and look forward to each appointment.” Rooster’s’ services include the Roosters Club Cut, a precision cut that includes a shampoo massage and a hottowel treatment, The Signature 7-Step Facial Shave, and the Gentlemen’s Choice, which includes the full-service Club Cut and Shave. Roosters also offers Beard Trims, Head Shaves (with straight razor), Kids Cuts, and a Professional “Hero Cut,” giving a special price for all active duty or retired service members, fire and EMS professionals. The salon provides shaving services and beard styling consultations , as well. Eleni, who has worked at Roosters in Glastonbury for eight years, says Rooster’s straight-razor shaves are especially popular. “I take great pride in my straight-razor services,” says Eleni, who is a Connecticut licensed barber. The salon’s beard styling services include showing clients how to care for their beards between shaves. “It’s been especially important after Covid, when a lot of guys grew their beards out,” Eleni says. “We’ll take the time to clean up the lines on the cheeks, the throat, and the overall shape of their beard. We even show our clients what they can do to maintain their appearance between appointments, and recommend the appropriate beard oils or balms, too.” Father’s Day is Sunday, June 19, and Eleni said a Roosters gift card makes a great present for that special dad in your life.

The Travelers Championship is Back in the Swing of Things THE PLAYERS, CROWDS AND HOSPITALITY ARE ALL RETURNING FOR 2022
ARTICLE BY EILEEN M. MCNAMARA
The annual Travelers Championship is coming back in full force this year and the organizations taking part in the 2022 tournament are thrilled that the golf tournament will return to business-as-usual after disruptions wrought by the pandemic. “This is the first year things have been normal for the tournament in three years,” said Nathan Grube, executive director of the Greater Hartford Community Foundation, which operates the tournament. “Our last normal year was 2019.” Grube, who also serves as tournament director, says the Travelers Championship was held in 2020, but with no spectators or hospitality kiosks. In 2021 the tournament was allowed to go on with limitations in both crowd sizes and hospitality involvement. CONTINUED >

“We’re going to have full fans back this year, with no crowd restrictions. And the hospitality is back as well, all the corporate venues, and the Fan Zone is back this year. It’s going to feel and look like what people remember back from 2019. It’s going to be really exciting, there’s going to be a lot of crowd energy.”
The tournament this year will be held June 20-26, with the Pro-Am play taking place on June 20 and 21 and the televised tournament running from June 23-26. The 2022 tournament purse is $8.3 million, Grube said. “We’re going to have full fans back this year, with no crowd restrictions. And the hospitality is back as well, all the corporate venues, and the Fan Zone is back this year. It’s going to feel and look like what people remember back from 2019. It’s going to be really exciting, there’s going to be a lot of crowd energy.” So far, the 2022 players field includes Dustin Johnson (the 2020 Travelers champion) Rory McIlroy, Scotty Scheffler, Justin Thomas and Bubba Watson - who was the 2008, 2010 and 2015 Travelers champion. This year’s defending champion is Harris English, who won the 2021 championship in a tournament-record, eight-hole playoff. While Travelers Insurance is the title sponsor of the tournament, there are

also dozens of other sponsors, including Eversource Energy, Mohegan Sun Casino, Webster Bank and Hartford Healthcare, to name a few. Since its inception in 1952, the tournament has raised more than $44 million for charities in the greater Hartford region. In 2021, the tournament generated $2.2 million for more than 125 charities throughout the region, including the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, which serves children and families coping with cancer and other serious illnesses. “Generating money for these amazing local charities remains the top objective of the Travelers Championship,” Grube said. “Celebrating with our charitable partners and hearing about how the funds will benefit thousands of Connecticut residents motivates us to create the best tournament experience for everyone who attends. LANTERN ENERGY FINDING INNOVATIONS TO CUT ENERGY BILLS If the recent spike in oil prices hasn’t got you thinking about energy saving measures, consider this: Energy audits and saving programs, experts say, can help you save as much as 30 percent on your energy bills. “Home heating oil is over $5 a gallon, more than double what it was last year. For homeowners, that means it can cost you $1,400 to fill an oil tank,” says Peter Callan, principal of Lantern Energy, an energy conservation company that helps customers save money on their energy bills. “We can help people reduce those costs significantly by evaluating your home’s condition during a home energy assessment.” Founded in 2009, Lantern Energy recently opened new offices here in Glastonbury at 256 Oakwood Drive. The move provides the company with a central location to service its customers in Connecticut and Massachusetts with a wide range of residential and commercial energy solutions, including weatherization and insulation projects, installing full-house generators, improved lighting solutions, at-home electrical vehicle (EV) charging stations, and solar energy options. Lantern Electrical is a separate, full-service electrical contracting company, headed by Brandon Hicks, that works in conjunction with Lantern Energy, installing the energy-saving systems that Lantern develops for its
customers. Together they provide comprehensive energy strategies to reduce energy costs. Lantern Energy also works closely with utility companies and solar firms in Connecticut and Massachusetts on energy conservation programs and incentives for homeowners, multifamily residential projects and businesses. With increases in oil, natural gas, propane and electricity costs and the push for greener energy sources, some of the state-of-the-art and money saving energy initiatives that homeowners are seeking include solar alternatives, EV charging stations and full-home generator systems for better storm preparations, Peter says. Whatever energy conservation solution you need, Lantern Energy works with you from start to finish, coordinating all state and local regulations and permit requirements and arranging all required inspections with local municipalities and utility companies. “We are looking forward to helping our neighbors in Glastonbury, not only reduce their energy costs but also reduce the environmental impact of heating and cooling their homes.” Lantern Energy 256 Oakwood Drive, Suite 3 Lanternenergy.com 1-877-878-3006

Fatherhood and Leadership: Michael Vigeant
A FATHER OF TWO AND A BUSINESS LEADER, MICHAEL SHARES HIS STORY OF SUCCESS AFTER TRAUMA ARTICLE BY EILEEN M. MCNAMARA
PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIAN AMBROSE
As a boy, Michael Vigeant faced a trauma that would strike paralyzing fear into most adults. Diagnosed at 12 with Stage 4 Hodgkin’s Disease (cancer of the lymph nodes), he spent a year battling the illness. It was 1986, a time when a cancer diagnosis was often a death sentence and treatments, Michael says, “were on the border of barbaric.” He lost all his hair and lost a lot of weight. He endured chemotherapy and radiation and ultimately had his spleen removed. But what he gained, he says, was a lifetime of perspective, resilience and empathy for others, along with a zeal to succeed. “There was this element of growing up faster than other kids, and cancer did take some of my childhood away. But it was also a tremendous blessing. It really cemented for me a lot of who I am as a person and who I am as a leader, a husband and as a father. Cancer gave me perspective, it helped me understand that not all people are kind, but many, many people are kind and while you don’t have much say over what happens to you, sometimes you can take a traumatic event like cancer and find the positive context in it.” He became one of the first kids in Connecticut to take part in the then-new Make-A-Wish Foundation’s efforts to provide positive experiences for kids with life-threatening diseases. The group sent Michael and his mom on an all-expenses paid trip to Disney World in Florida.

“Sometimes you can take a traumatic event like cancer and find the positive context in it.”
“We had a blast,” he says. Today, Michael is President/CEO of GreatBlue Research, Inc. a national market research firm he founded in 2010. The company, headquartered at 20 Western Boulevard in Glastonbury, employs more than 50 full- and part-time workers. A Manchester native, Michael and his wife Heather, a teacher at Buttonball Elementary School, moved here in 2007. They have a 15-year-old daughter, Grace, a sophomore at Glastonbury High School, and a son, 10-year-old Austin, who attends Hebron Avenue School. To a degree, he says, he owes many of his business and personal life successes to cancer. CONTINUED >

Michael and Heather Vigeant on vacation in Florida
During his treatment he attended Camp Rising Sun in Hebron, a camp for kids with cancer, where he met Jerry Lindsley, his counselor. Lindsley owned a New Haven-based market research firm and was volunteering at Camp Rising Sun. Jerry and Michael quickly formed a bond and Michael credits Jerry with being an instrumental mentor throughout much of his life. “He had a belief in giving back and so he became a camp counselor and he became a mentor of mine.” When Michael graduated college in 1998 Lindsley called and offered him a job at his market research company. The position put Michael on the path to create his own company, which he moved to Glastonbury in 2019. GreatBlue provides custom market research for a diverse variety of industries, including utilities, health care, agriculture, municipalities and consumer product goods companies. GreatBlue’s services range from one-off market research projects to ongoing, multi-year national research projects, Michael says. The roots of his company’s success, he adds, traces directly to the trauma of his childhood cancer. “There were a lot of years that I thought ‘you can’t put a young body through that kind of trauma and think you’re going to live a long healthy life.’ I lived a lot of years thinking I had to jam as much as I could into my life. For the longest time I couldn’t relax, I couldn’t sit still because for me, motion meant life; as long as I was moving I was progressing. I would travel like crazy, I’d be on the road for upwards of 150 days a year. I felt I had to go and grow the business, go grow the brand. My wife Heather is a saint as she worked through those times with me!”
“My life has become less about me having to achieve and more about passing along to others the emotional process that led to my achievements.”

Then, Covid hit, and brought with it the emotional and psychic echoes of his childhood, a curse and a blessing. In the shutdown, like many, his company also struggled and temporary laid off 26 employees. But as with so many other people, the pandemic forced him to slow down, spend more time at home, and focus inward. “During the pandemic, I realized I could coach my kids more often, spend more time with my wife and I could really focus on the business and focus on how to help our customers through this crazy time.” It was an intersection, he says, of how being a leader and a father gave him the strength to face another traumatic event and rise to the occasion. “We had to lead through very difficult times. The big shift in our work in the past few years has been finding ways in which business leaders can use data points to improve their leadership and give back to their community. After Covid, It’s been about focusing on companies’ cultures and about giving back to their community.” Personally, Michael says, the pandemic has brought positive changes in his life as a business leader, a community member, a husband and a father.

Now in his late 40s, Michael says he’s come to realize that he can live a full life. “As I get farther away from that childhood trauma I think maybe I am going to live a long life and now my life has become less about me having to achieve and more about passing along to others the emotional process that led to my achievements along the way. Paying forward the mentorship that I receive”

The 2023 Chevy Corvette Z06 roared onto the stage at the New York Auto Show this spring, blowing away spectators with its powerful and sleek redesign. While electric and hybrid vehicles, like the Kia Concept EV9 and the Toyota Rhombus, got a lot of buzz at the annual car show in Manhattan, the Corvette had seasoned car lovers waxing poetic when it came onstage. “Chevrolet has given us our first glimpse at what a mega Vette will look like with the reveal of the 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06,” Edmunds wrote. “Under the engine cover is an all-new, rather exotic V8 with a lofty redline. You also get a number of aero and mechanical upgrades to make the most of the prodigious horsepower on tap — especially if you opt for the Z07 track attack package. The result is an American sports car that can finally go toe to toe with automakers like Ferrari or McLaren.” “This current version of the ’Vette has a mid-engine configuration ... this arrangement gives the Corvette its final set of supercar credentials, the ability to compete with exotic machines that are twice or sometimes three times as expensive,” said the Kelly Blue Book write up. The 2023 Corvette has a 670-horsepower engine. The base price of the car is $61,000 but with a convertible version and extras the price can get pushed past $100,000. At a charity auction in Florida recently a wealthy car dealer paid $1 million for the first retail Z06 to roll off the assembly line and spent $3.6 million for the 2023 coupe version of the car.

Turn Your Garden Into A Tropical Oasis This Summer Tropicals can add a pop of color in your garden.
ADDING EXOTIC, HEAT-LOVING PLANTS TO A SEASONAL GARDEN IS FUN AND EASY
Potted palm trees are easy to care for year-round.

Looking to add a bit of the exotic to your summer gardens? Try tropical plants! Tropicals do well even in gardens in colder climates like New England, as long as you follow a few simple rules: Plant them well after all chances of a late spring frost, water well and consistently, and remove them before the first fall frost. Gardening with tropical specimens has become so popular that most garden centers now carry a variety of exotic plants (including the ever-popular elephant ear plants). Some produce bulbs and can be removed and divided in fall for use again, year after year. Plant your tropicals in pots and you can simply bring them inside in the fall to liven up your interiors year-round!
The Bird of Paradise plant (which comes in a white variety as well) is a dramatic addition to a garden.
The popular Elephant Ear plant (Colocasia) adds a bit of whimsy and the exotic to northern gardens in summer.

Get Ready For Your Best Grilled Steak Yet! Reverse Searing is the Secret of Top Chefs ARTICLE BY EILEEN M. MCNAMARA
It seems simple enough, right? Heat the grill, season the steak, sear on the fire and then cook until the right temperature. Yet there you sit, with a chewy, overcooked piece of meat that cost you upwards of $20 per pound. So how to avoid ruining a good steak? The new buzz in grilling is the reverse sear method and the folks at Chicago Steak, who make the famous meat seasoning, tell us how. Heat your oven to 260-270° Place a grill rack atop a baking sheet. Place your seasoned steak on the

rack and put it in the oven. Using an instant-read thermometer remove the steak when its internal temperature reaches 130° F (medium rare). Adjust the cooking time for rarer or more well-done steaks. Let the meat rest for 5-10 minutes after you remove it from the oven. Next, place the steak on a red hot grill and grill for one minute on each side, searing the meat. You should be left with a steak that has that has a tasty coating and a juicy, tender inside. Enjoy!
