LIFESTYLE LETTER
May brings flowers and Mother's Day Mother's Day this year is Sunday, May 8 and for us, May is our Ladie's Issue. We pay homage to them with articles that focus on women and women's issues. One of the most famous women in our state is Katharine Hepburn, a legendary actress whose record-setting 12 Oscar nominations and four wins remains to this day. At the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, "The Kate," in Old Saybrook, a town Hepburn called home for the last years of her life, there's a new museum that pays homage to all things Kate Hepburn. We spoke with Robin Andreoli, The Kate's director of development and community relations, about Hepburn's career, her time here in Connecticut and the new museum. In our Culinary Creation feature this month we share with you Hepburn's well-known, super chocolatey recipe for brownies. We also spoke with Dr. Allison S. Padegimas, a cardiologist with Consulting Cardiologists LLC of Glastonbury about the connection between women and heart disease and how to mitigate and prevent the disease. Women these days also tend to have a lot more stress than their counterparts from decades ago and Cheri Garet, of Body In Balance of Rocky Hill knows that well. She left a corporate job to pursue a more healthy lifestyle and career and is passionate about helping women understand the stress their bodies are under and how to address it through massage and exercise. We checked in with Jordan Coe, president of Waverly Markets, which operates three local ShopRite supermarkets, including one in East Hartford near the top of Main Street. Jordan was the Connecticut River Valley Chamber of Commerce's 2021 Business Person of the Year and takes pride in her family business's long history of community service. Finally, there's a new medical spa option in our area. Z&L Esthetics of Rocky Hill opened in March, offering injectable fillers, a line of medical grade skin care products and a unique procedure called Platelet Rich Plasma. We hope you enjoy this month's issue of Glastonbury Lifestyle and Happy Mother's Day to all! GARY PERRELLI, PUBLISHER @GL ASTONBURYLIFEST YLE

How much does your bank value you if they’re selling your account again? It’s happening again. Another CT bank is being swallowed up and you know what comes next: more paperwork, new fees and a flashy brochure introducing you to your next bank. If your bank just proved that shareholders and profits come first (again!), you can send them a message that customer service comes first for you. At Dime Bank, we are welcoming customers who have had enough. It’s your bank. Your choice. Your Dime.

Finding strategies to avoid heart disease 16
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S
ARTICLE BY EILEEN M. MCNAMARA
Do you know your heart health? In the past decade or so women have become more aware of their risk of heart disease. Thanks to increased awareness of the issue, many of us have heard the sobering statistic that heart disease is the number one killer of women. While breast cancer concerns have been at the forefront of women’s health for decades, in reality, the risk of dying from heart disease far outpaces that of breast cancer. In fact, heart disease in women accounts for more deaths than nearly all cancers combined, says Dr. Allison Padegimas, of Consulting Cardiologists PC, which has offices across central Connecticut, including one on Western Boulevard in Glastonbury. “Awareness of heart disease and its causes has been improving, but at the same time the percentage of women who are able to identify heart disease as the number one killer of women is about 50 percent,” Dr. Padegimas says. “Heart disease in women is prevalent across different age categories and races. One reason so many women don’t understand their own heart health risks, according to the Centers for Disease Control, is that historically men, who traditionally held more high-stress jobs than women - and smoked and drank more were at the highest risk of the disease. “Although heart disease is sometimes thought of as a man’s disease, almost as many women as men die each year” from heart illnesses, the CDC says. While there are some genetic predispositions or underlying medical conditions for heart disease - such as high blood pressure or cholesterol - it’s also an illness that can be managed by lifestyle, Dr. Padegimas says. The most common type of heart disease is coronary artery disease, (CAD), and it affects the flow of blood to the heart. CAD is caused by plaque buildup in the arteries that supply blood to the heart, causing the arteries to narrow and block blood flow. For some, the first sign of CAD is a heart attack. Our diets can affect our heart disease risks, Dr. Padegimas says, as well as our lifestyle. Too much alcohol consumption can create toxins that damage the heart. Too little exercise can encourage the buildup of plaque in our arteries, as can a diet rich in fatty, salty foods and heavy in cholesterol. CONTINUED >

“We encourage women to pay attention to any new symptoms they’re having. There’s testing we can do to make sure your heart is healthy and if you’re having new symptoms you should talk to a doctor about it.”
“But for women, especially, there are times in our life when we’re UNIQUELY susceptible to heart disease” Dr. Padegimas adds. During pregnancy some women can experience gestational diseases that affect the heart, such as diabetes and hypertension, as well as changes that affect the circulation and blood vessels. During menopause, many women start experiencing high blood pressure and the loss of estrogen can lead to a higher risk of plaque build up in the arteries. Additionally, an increase of visceral fat in the abdominal cavity - which many women experience later in life is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Women also don’t often recognize the signs of heart disease. Chest pain, tightness, or pressure, heartburn and shortness of breath, are the most common. “The symptoms of heart disease can be obvious and at other times they are very vague,” Dr. Padegimas says. “We encourage women to pay attention to any new symptoms they’re having. There’s testing we can do to make sure your heart is healthy and if you’re having new symptoms you should talk to a doctor about it.”

Getting an annual check up and having your blood pressure taken regularly, is a good way to start assessing your overall heart health, she adds. “People know their bodies pretty well and they know when there’s something different going on. Women in particular tend to have a nurturing mentality of taking care of everyone else and do not always prioritize focusing on themselves as much, but when it comes to the heart, early detection of disease can save lives and it is always worth paying attention to subtle signs.” Besides Glastonbury, Consulting Cardiologists has offices in Hartford, Wallingford, Avon, Wethersfield, Manchester, Cheshire, Windsor, West Hartford, and Middletown. "The Kate" THE KATHARINE HEPBURN CULTURAL ARTS CENTER PAYS HOMAGE TO ONE OF CONNECTICUT'S FAMOUS WOMEN WITH A NEW MUSEUM
ARTICLE BY EILEEN M. MCNAMARA
Like the woman it’s named after, The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, “The Kate” is considered a treasure among her fans. Located inside Old Saybrook’s former town hall, the center includes a 285-seat theater where a diverse array of performing arts events are presented. It opened in 2009, six years after Hepburn’s death and after a multi-million dollar renovation of the old town hall. Considered one of the greatest actors of the 20th Century, Hepburn, who set a record that still holds today by garnering 12 Academy Award nominations and winning four Oscars, had close ties to Connecticut and Old Saybrook. She was born in West Hartford in 1912 and grew up there. When she was five years old, her family bought a waterfront summer home in the Fenwick section of Old Saybrook. CONTINUED >

“We feel the museum, the only one of its kind, truly offers an authentic view of the life and career of our namesake and her influence on popular culture and the entertainment industry.”
Fenwick and the family’s rambling, Nantucket-style cottage held a special place in Hepburn’s heart. She called the place “paradise,” because it offered her refuge and respite from her busy Hollywood life. Known as much for her natural beauty as for her straight-forward, no-nonsense character (she wore slacks instead of dresses or skirts at a time when it was uncommon and was known for being outgoing, outspoken and athletic), Hepburn later in her life came back to Fenwick to live year-round. However, she was never a recluse in her seaside home. Locals would tell of seeing her occasionally buying groceries in a small supermarket on Main Street or visiting the hardware store nearby. She died at age 96 in Fenwick in 2003 and her home was later sold and renovated. This past year, the Kate marked a milestone in its homage to the actress when it renovated the Katharine Hepburn Museum on the first floor of the performing arts center. The expansion of what had been two rooms with a small amount of some Hepburn memorabilia came about after the center was able to raise about $500,000 in donations. The impetus for the expansion came when one of Hepburn’s heirs gifted a treasure trove of some of the actress’s personal effects. “The quantity of memorabilia now available for view in the museum has

quadrupled,” said Robin Andreoli, Director of Development and Community Relations for The Kate. On display are photos of Hepburn both in her personal and professional life – videos of the actress, and exhibits containing wardrobe pieces from her legendary film career, letters she wrote to family and friends chronicling her rise to superstardom, and examples of some of the original artwork the actress painted. The museum is open to the public four days a week - Tuesday through Friday - from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and one hour before performances. It includes several video screens throughout the displays that play home movies and film clips of Hepburn. Those videos, along with photos and large dioramas of some of Hepburn’s hand-written letters, give museum visitors an intimate sense of the woman, Robin said. “We feel the museum, the only one of its kind, truly offers an authentic view of the life and career of our namesake and her influence on popular culture and the entertainment industry.” “The Kate” Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center 300 Main St., Old Saybrook thekate.org Tickets: 860-510-0453 Phone: 860.510.0473

A Family Tradition of Service From a young age, Jordan Coe remembers how her family instilled in her a commitment to serving others and making them feel welcomed. She would help entertain guests during her grandmother’s weekly Saturday dinner parties. In her parents’ home she was expected to help greet visitors at the door, take their coats, help fix their drinks and feed them. “In my family, we always did everything we could to make people feel welcome.” Today, as president of Waverly Markets, which operates ShopRite grocery stores in East Hartford, Manchester and Vernon, Jordan draws on those past experiences to make customers feel at home in her family’s stores and help her staff understand the importance of making people feel valued when they’re shopping. She and her family (her parents remain active in the business and her brother, Zachary Cohen is Director of e-Commerce and Merchandising) also have expanded on that concept of service by staying involved with local charities and organizations in the communities where they do business. “We come from a very close knit family and we grew up learning the importance of service,” Jordan says.

“In my family, we always did everything we could to make people feel welcome.”
She says she didn’t set out to become the head of her family’s retail business. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Boston University and thought about moving to Italy, which she fell in love with after spending some time there. But she came back to her parent’s home instead so she could work on her post graduate degree and started working as well in her family’s business. “I moved home and said I’ll work at home in the business for a year and then apply to MBA programs. It felt like a great fit to continue working while getting my MBA. And as it happens in life, where you have all these intentions, I never left. They’ve also consistently encouraged their staff to take part in those community efforts as well. “It’s always a good day when I have someone on our team or in our community approach me and say ‘Hey Jordan, there’s an organization that needs help. We try to find a way to join forces.” Waverly Markets works with CT Foodshare and their associated food pantries and kitchens in the region. They are supporters of CT Children’s Medical Center, where Jordan serves on the Steering Committee for the CT Children’s Connection, and they also partner with local organizations that address workforce development, homelessness, mental health and addiction, cancer research and, of course, food insecurity that many others experience. She also serves on the board of Wakefern Food Corp, the largest retailer-owned cooperative in the United States. It comprises 50 member companies - including Waverly Markets- who independently own and operate their own supermarkets. She is currently on the board of the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce and a Commissioner with the Economic Development Commission in the Town of Vernon. Waverly’s Purpose - to care deeply about people, helping them to eat well and be happy. Waverly Markets is involved with the local chambers of commerce in each of the communities where the company owns a ShopRite store, including the CT River Valley Chamber of Commerce. Last year the chamber gave Jordan its Business Person of the Year award. “Aside from continuing a legacy that spans four generations in the food business, Jordan has a passion for workforce development and spends a large portion of her time helping to create opportunities for youth in her business and community,” the chamber said in granting the award. “In addition, Jordan spends a great deal of time supporting sustainability initiatives particularly as it relates to food insecurity, offering free nutritional services to schools, community organizations, Waverly Markets’ associates and customers and engaging in partnerships
that address and create awareness for some of the toughest challenges faced by her community with regard to hunger and health and wellness.” Jordan and her husband, Christopher Coe, have four children between the ages of 2 and 12. Despite her busy and diverse professional life, her priority, she says, remains taking care of her family. “I have a very strong work ethic and I’ve worked diligently to achieve my goals, but I try to stick to my priorities and for me it always comes back to family, it’s my foundation in everything I do.” Waverly Markets operates these ShopRite stores in our region: 31 Main St., East Hartford 214 Spencer St., Manchester 35 Talcotville Road, Vernon shoprite.com

Like many women in today’s frantic world, Cheri Garet was a highly stressedout individual, single mother who was working full time as a busy executive and juggling the many demands at home when she discovered the powerful benefits of yoga and meditation as a way to ease her stress and anxiety. But unlike many people who do not pursue their true calling and passion in life, Cheri took her new love of yoga, meditation, and massage to a whole new level. She had the courage to leave her steady corporate job and returned to school to study massage. While in school, she discovered yoga and a variety of other fitness classes, which helped her reconnect with her body, mind, and spirit. “I was at a breaking point when I discovered yoga, meditation, and other natural healing modalities as alternatives to traditional medicine … I had a desire to learn more. I went back to school initially for massage therapy and ended up becoming a fitness advocate, a certified personal trainer and a staunch yoga practitioner. I continue to practice yoga daily as a way of grounding and centering myself.” This journey led her to establish a business in 2009 called Hands That Heal Massage Therapy which has since rebranded to become Body IN Balance. Body IN Balance was created to provide a more comprehensive and holistic approach to health and wellness for her clients, as well as to meet the needs of the ever-changing pressures many are facing today. Cheri’s mission is to help individuals reconnect with their

bodies by integrating multiple healing modalities in massage, while also providing resources in health, fitness, beauty, and education. “I wanted to offer a more comprehensive list of services to help empower women to reconnect with their internal body cues. I look at the whole-body approach in massage and I bring my knowledge of health and fitness to provide new holistic techniques to facilitate the healing in the body.” “I am, first and foremost, passionate about movement and connection. Movement is life. I help clients facilitate that movement and that connection within their own bodies, and I encourage them to translate that movement to create awareness of their energy, and to help them to relieve any pain they may be experiencing.” Cheri’s services include therapeutic, prenatal, Swedish, and deep tissue massage, as well as cupping and bamboo therapy, shiatsu, and spot treatment medical massage therapy. She also is a certified practitioner of Manual Lymph Drainage, a form of very light massage that encourages flow in the body to help improve the immune system and alleviate edema. Body IN Balance offers a wide variety of services, including, but not limited to, a line of health, fitness and beauty products, massage, and essential oils. K ATH A R INE HEPBU R N'S BROW NIE R ECIPE
Katharine Hepburn, it is said, so loved brownies and chocolate in general that she developed this recipe in her youth after being gifted a batch of brownies from a friend. True to her outgoing and outspoken character, Hepburn deemed the brownies not “chocolatey” enough and set out to create her own recipe. You can also find this brownies recipe on a card in the new museum at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook. The center recently opened the museum to pay homage to Hepburn, a fourtime Oscar winning and legendary actress who was born and raised in West Hartford. She lived the latter part of her life in her waterfront Old Saybrook home in the Fenwick section of town.

"WE WANT PEOPLE TO LOOK AS GREAT AS THEY FEEL"
PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIAN AMBROSE
Dr. Zack Willams, a medical doctor specializing in internal medicine, and Laurie DeCiantis, a nurse practitioner specializing in family medicine, recently opened Z&L Esthetics Med Spa in Rocky Hill, offering non surgical cosmetic procedures. Z&L Esthetics offers botulinum treatments from all the brands approved by the FDA. These products help diminish the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on the face and neck including the forehead, and frown lines “the 11s,” (the twin lines between the eyebrows) just to name a few. But botulinum is only the beginning of the services offered by Z&L Esthetics. They offer treatment using dermal filler made from hyaluronic acid, a natural component of skin that helps to keep your skin hydrated and healthy. Filler improves areas of volume loss including the cheeks, under the eyes, the nasolabial folds, and the lips. In fact, lip volumizing is the most requested treatment Dr Williams receives. “My favorite part of using filler with a patient is handing them the mirror when we’re finished. Their expression makes this worthwhile,” says Dr. Williams. But the treatment that sets their med spa apart is Mrs. DeCiantis’ specialty, Platelet Rich Plasma, known as PRP. Platelet Rich Plasma is obtained by drawing a patient’s blood and separating it using a spinning apparatus known as a centrifuge. This separates the plasma “liquid gold” from the red blood cells. The plasma contains growth factors that promote healthy skin and is injected in the face, as well as the scalp for hair restoration. When combined with microneedling, a process used to create micro-abrasions/punctures of the skin to promote new cell growth, the effects are remarkable. But this is not the only use for PRP. In addition to using plasma for skin restoration, a new technique CONTINUED >

being delivered by Z&L Esthetics, is the ability to gelatinize a patient’s plasma to create their own dermal filler. This plasma filler corrects volume loss similarly to hyaluronic acid filler. Z&L Esthetics is the only Med Spa in Connecticut, performing this procedure. What can Z&L Esthetics offer to the patient that doesn’t want injectables? Z&L Esthetics carries Neocutis, medical grade skin care products. Neocutis products were originally developed to treat burn victims. The results were remarkable and the product was made available to the public. Skin care is important and not overlooked at Z&L Esthetics. Patients are encouraged to book a free consultation to discuss an individualized skin care regimen. “This is not a one size fits all approach. We pride ourselves on providing an individual management plan for each patient. Our goal is to turn one-time customers into long-term skin care patients,” says Mrs. DeCiantis. “Ultimately we want people to look as great as they feel.”
