LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy New Year!

January 2022 PUBLISHER

Gary Perrelli | gary.perrelli@lifestylepubs.com EDITOR

Eileen McNamara | eileen.mcnamara@lifestylepubs.com

The New Year always brings new resolutions and commitments, or a rebalancing of life. That's why, at Glastonbury Lifestyle, the January issue is all about health and wellness. And not just the health of our bodies, but of our minds and spirits as well. Toward that end, this issue focuses on some of the ways we can improve ourselves in 2022. To start, we look at how reorganizing our homes, or even a room in our homes, can bring us a sense of well-being. Glastonbury's Maggie Mundy has a knack for organization and has started her own business, Maggie Organizes. We spoke with her about how peace-inducing it can be to organize even a single room in your home. In our Local Limelight feature this month, we spoke with Kat Walinski about her new business, Om Glastonbury Wellness Center, that she’ll soon open at 256 Oakwood Drive. She'll offer a variety of yoga and other classes to help us improve our fitness. Speaking of new businesses in town, Glastonbury native Chelsea Viola and her husband Khoa Ngyuen, both podiatrists, have opened Vale Foot & Ankle Surgery at 300 Hebron Ave. Chelsea says we often think of our feet last when we assess our overall health, but improved foot and ankle health is important to our overall well-being. Want to improve your skin and appearance in 2022? Check out a Q&A from the Cellulite Contouring Center. The Sycamore Street business uses a treatment called Endermologie to minimize the appearance of cellulite. And don't forget your furry friend's health needs in 2022! Sweata Giri has opened RehabK9 Care at 160 New London Turnpike. She offers a variety of dog physical therapy services that can address many of your pet's health problems and even limit the need for medications or invasive medical treatments. Also this month we've included a primer on how to add smoothies and juicing to your diet or undertake a juice cleanse, courtesy of Liquid Nirvana, a juice and smoothie bar at 2333 Main St. We've also included a listing, in our Local Experiences section, of local spas and beauty salons. The New Year has brought Glastonbury Lifestyle a few changes. You may have noticed our logo is slightly different and some of our feature styles and formats have been improved. We hope you like our new look and here's to your health in 2022! GARY PERRELLI, PUBLISHER @GL ASTONBURYLIFEST YLE

Maggie Mundy Can Help Bring Balance and Calm to Your Living Space

20

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | H E ALTH + W E LLNE S S

Maggie Mundy Has Launched a Home Organization Business

Did you make a resolution for 2022 to become better organized or to maybe finally tackle your finances? Experts say that often one of the quickest ways to a healthier lifestyle and financial life is to get yourself - and your household - organized. Many of us would love to do just that, but where to start? Maggie Mundy of Glastonbury has launched a new business based on that very question. A former teacher, Maggie realized she had a knack for organizing and decluttering homes, as well as staging them for sale, after she had her two children and left her teaching job. “Friends started reaching out to me to say things like ‘Can you help me organize my kitchen or pantry?’ Realtors started asking me for help in getting homes cleaned and staged for photos. It literally just picked up overnight. About five months ago I woke up one morning and told my husband: ‘Honey, I’m going to do this as a business.” That’s how she launched her new business, Maggie Organizes. “I can help get your home in tip top shape. Whether your home needs TLC before a family event or you’ve been wanting to organize a space in your house but don’t know where or how to start, I’m here to help.” Getting organized in your home can bring a sense of balance and well-being to your life that you might be missing amid your clutter, Maggie says.

“It’s calming, it’s just a feeling of ‘I know where things are, I’m not going to feel rushed and I’m not going to feel frustrated looking for something.” When she works with new clients, she adds, she starts off by looking at the space they want to organize and figuring out “what can I do to make it work better? You have all this stuff you’ve accumulated over time so what do you do with it? Are you actually going to use it all? Do you even need all of it? We look at the space together and discuss what it is that’s not working for them. A lot of time people just say ‘I’m overwhelmed, I don’t know where to start.’ The first step is just to take everything out and look at it.” “Sometimes it can be as simple as going into your bathroom and opening that top drawer in your vanity and cleaning it out. It’s small things like that, but it really does bring a calmness to your life.” Maggie also does home staging for homeowners and realtors when they bring their properties to market. “After discussing your goals and vision for the space I will come up with two options for how the space can be organized to fit your lifestyle,” she says. THE NEW YOGA AND FITNESS STUDIO WILL OPEN SOON

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARRIE DRAGHI

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE

Om Massage Group, the massage studio that's operated here for 14 years, is expanding and opening a new facility, Om Glastonbury Wellness Center. Expected to open in early 2022, it will offer a full range of yoga and fitness classes. Om's owner, Kat Walinski, is a licensed massage therapist and avid Bikram yoga practitioner. She recently acquired the long-standing Bikram Yoga Glastonbury in the spring of 2020. The ensuing pandemic forced her to pause all yoga business operations. During the downtime, Kat rebranded the yoga business as Om Glastonbury Wellness Center or just simply Om. In addition. She secured a new location for the yoga studio, a newly renovated 5,000-square-foot space that will encompass a 1300-square-foot yoga studio. This stateof-the-art yoga studio will be heated to the requisite 105 degrees and 40 percent humidity. Followers of Bikram Yoga expect and endure these studio conditions for 90 minutes. Kat says the yoga studio will also incorporate a clean air filtration and circulation system. Kat says she’ll offer a variety of yoga classes. These include Bikram Yoga also now known as the Original Hot Yoga and B 26 & 2. These are 90-minute-long classes created as a way to heal the body. Kat says.

“The heat warms up the body’s tissues from the outside in and helps prevent injuries during practice.” Other classes will include Yin and Restorative yoga, Power yoga, and Katonah yoga she says. The new facility will also allow her to offer her therapeutic massage and bodywork services along with High Intensity Interval and TRX Training, and self- defense classes. “I’d like to create a community vibe there with different types of charity and community events,” she says. She continues to offer massage therapy at her original location at 18 School St. A longtime yoga aficionado, Kat says she moved her business to Glastonbury in 2008 because this town was the only one that had a Bikram yoga studio in the state. She became a certified instructor during the pandemic when health restrictions barred her from massage therapy for a time. “I just fell in love with yoga as a way to heal my own body. I practice it to compensate for my own injuries.” Om Glastonbury Wellness Center 256 Oakwood Drive, Suite 2 Phone: 860-633-3740 On Instagram: @omglastonbury

Vale Ankle & Foot Surgery Has Expanded to Glastonbury 28

LOCA L’S C H OICE | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S

When you think “wellness” your feet are probably not the first thing that comes to mind. But as anyone with a foot or ankle injury can tell you, it’s pretty debilitating, especially for athletes, when that part of your body isn’t working properly. “People tend to neglect their feet until there’s something wrong with one of them,” says Chelsea Viola, a podiatrist and part owner of Vale Foot & Ankle. “They’ll say ‘Well, there’s nothing I can do about my foot problem.’ " A Glastonbury native who practiced podiatry in Florida for several years before returning to Connecticut, Chelsea, along with her husband Khoa Ngyuen, opened Vale Foot & Ankle in Oxford in 2020. The couple last May opened a second location at 300 Hebron Ave. Both are podiatrists and members of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. The couple treats patients who suffer from both injuries and infections of the lower extremities. A large part of their practice, Chelsea says, is treating sports-related injuries and patients who suffer from diabetes. “About 50 percent of our practice is sports related injuries. There are a lot of foot and ankle injuries in sports and we love working with athletes. Getting them back to their sport is very rewarding.” Probably one of the most underserved populations of foot injuries or diseases, she adds, are diabetics. Because of the circulatory problems diabetes causes, diabetics often suffer nerve damage in their feet. While she and her husband specialize in foot and ankle surgeries, Chelsea says the couple take a very conservative treatment approach with their patients. “We exhaust all medical options before we explore surgery,” she says. If surgery is needed, most of the time it can be done in one of their ambulatory surgical centers in Glastonbury or Oxford, and surgeries are always minimally invasive. Most patients can return home the same day as the surgery. Vale Foot & Ankle Surgery, PLLC 300 Hebron Ave., Suite 104 Phone: 860-633-9004 Online: Valepodiatry.com

If you have a dog or cat you know the pain your pet - and you can suffer when they’re injured. A broken leg or torn ligament can lead to months of excruciating recovery, not to mention mounting vet bills. But the science of canine rehabilitation is starting to sweep the U.S. as pet owners seek out ever more medical interventions for the ills of their furry companions. Here in Glastonbury there’s a new canine/pet rehab option, RehabK9 Care, owned by Dr.Sweata Giri, a Glastonbury resident. The business offers a wide array of services such as physical therapy for your dog & cat as well as Full service grooming, DIY grooming, dog Barkery and essential oil massage. Sweata’s passion was to be a veterinarian but when her personal journey took a different turn she earned her doctorate in physical therapy instead and later earned her certification in canine rehabilitation from the University of Tennessee to fulfill her dream of opening a practice to help dogs and cats. She started her first canine rehab practice in West Haven and it proved so popular she decided to start a second one closer to home. The location here also made sense, she said, because “Glastonbury is home to me and people love their fur buddies.” Canine rehabilitation can help your pet recover faster from surgeries and injuries and is endorsed by the American Kennel Club as a positive medical alternative to surgery and medications for your pets. “Arthritic dogs and those recovering from debilitating orthopedic surgery are typical patients for the therapy," according to the AKC. It’s also used to support dogs with other musculoskeletal problems or neurological conditions." Sweata credits her dog, Chop, with inspiring her. He's also the logo of the company. She also says her family's support was an important part of her success, her husband, dad, sister and late mom who was also an animal lover. She hopes to get certified in equine therapy as well, and continues to make house calls, which she started during the pandemic. It makes her stand out from other big hospitals and commercial establishments, she says. “House calls aren’t just a convenience for pet owners, it also helps to keep the animals calm. It makes it more peaceful for them.”

INCORPORATING JUICES AND SMOOTHIES INTO YOUR LIFE LIQUID NIRVANA SHARES A SIMPLE, LIFE-CHANGING WAY TO STREAMLINE YOUR DIET

36

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

LIQUID NIRVANA Liquid Nirvana Juice and Smoothie bar has been in business since 2014, with two locations, Glastonbury and Avon. In addition to Acai Bowls, smoothies, and smoothie bowls, juices have been an integral part of the Liquid Nirvana’s menu. We serve both individual juices and juice detox programs. Why juice? Adding juice with vegetables and fruits to your daily diet daily increases blood levels of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Juice can also help lower blood levels of unhealthy elements and boost the immune system. Consuming mixed fruit and vegetable juice has shown to improve nutrient levels of beta carotene, folate, potassium and selenium. There’s even evidence juice can reduce the risk of diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s and asthma. Juicing is a convenient way to up your nutrient intake. It’s the easiest way to “eat” enough fruits and vegetables, especially if you find it difficult to get the recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables into your daily diet. It’s is a great alternative to processed drinks for kids and it helps boost your energy levels Fresh juices are packed with soluble fiber, which supports good bacteria growth and digestive health. Juicing has been shown to regulate blood sugar levels, lower cholesterol, and slow the transit of food through the digestive tract. In both apple and orange juice, you can find almost three grams of healthy soluble fiber. Antioxidants naturally occur in plant-based foods, especially juices, and help prevent or stop cell damage caused by oxidants. Darker colored fruits and vegetables usually contain more antioxidants. Freshly squeezed juices provide your body with a large quantity of water, which works to help the body process carbohydrates, produce energy, keep your metabolism active, and maintain the health and elasticity of your skin.

JUICE AND SMOOTHIE TIPS: • You can juice a wide variety of vegetables, each providing a unique set of nutrients and health benefits. Carrots, apples, cucumbers, celery, parsley, cilantro, mint, pineapple, kale, spinach, sweet potato, bell peppers, wheat grass, turmeric, lemon/limes, oranges, fennel, ginger, and tomato are some of the top vegetables for juicing. • Try mixing and matching veggies from the list above to squeeze different vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants into your diet. You should combine vegetables with fruits to further dial up the flavor and health benefits. • Quantities vary based on taste, but try to use more greens and less fruit. 80/20 rule is best - 80 percent vegetables and 20 percent fruits. • Should I do a cleanse? A cleanse can help regulated your colon, flushing the toxins out of your body. Juicing increases energy, stamina, and mental clarity. Cleanses lead to better sleep patterns, you’ll get a radiant complexion and healthier hair and nails. • What about protein? Fruits and vegetables have adequate protein for a 3-5 day cleanse. For a long-term cleanse, think of adding a plant-based protein to juices. • Real Results: Greg embarked on a 30-day juice in 2015. He lost 31 pounds and felt much healthier. He decided to take control of his own diet, adding more exercise in the form of daily walking and came to Liquid Nirvana to pick up his first six juices. “I found I had more energy when I was juicing.” Greg said. Contouring Cellulite Center ENDERMOLOGIE IS THE ONLY FDA APPROVED, NONINVASIVE METHOD DESIGNED TO TREAT CELLULITE

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARRIE DRAGHI

40

S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLNE S S

Q. WHAT IS ENDERMOLOGIE? A. Endermologie is a non-invasive, all natural method of reducing the appearance of cellulite for body and face. LPG Integral Cellu M6 is exclusive technology of cellular stimulation using two motorized rollers and suction. Boosting the production of rejuvenating substances (collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid) for firmer skin. Activating fat cells with the elimination process to reshape your figure and stimulating fluid exchanges for a deep detox effect. Improving skin appearance by 71% firmness and 67% the appearance of cellulite.

Q. HOW DOES LPG’S MASSAGER HELP? A.The treatment head creates a skin fold that is manipulated in multi-directions within the client’s tolerance level, which gives a deep tissue massage. It’s like fitness for the skin.

Q. WHAT ROLE DOES WATER, EXERCISE AND DIET PLAY IN ENDERMOLOGIE? A.Adequate water intake flushes waste from the body while hydrating muscles and other tissues. While the lymphatic system is primarily responsible for removing and eliminating these fluids, muscle movement and exercise is vital to promote lymphatic circulation.

Q. HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NECESSARY AND WHAT PROVES IT WORKS? A.Like exercise, one session won’t produce recognizable results. A sustained commitment consisting of a minimum 8-12 sessions produces improvements in the appearance of cellulite and body measurements. In addition, independent medical studies show a 400% increase in blood flow and a 300% increase in lymphatic flow for at least 3 hours after a 35-minute treatment.

Q. WHERE DID ENDERMOLOGIE ORIGINATE? A.It was invented in 1986 by Louis-Paul Guitay from France. Endermologie is in 110 countries and is becoming more popular in the U.S. Endermologie has gained recognition in popular magazines, such as USA Today, Newsweek and Prime Time Live. The Cold Plunge

Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 42

G E T ACT IV E | FITN ESS

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
