We say it every year, but it's true: Hard to believe it's December already and the New Year is upon us. The holiday season is in full swing, Chanukah is Dec. 18 this year, and Christmas follows the week after. This is our Holiday & Giving Issue and with that in mind, we've got several stories to get you in the spirit of the season. For the past two years here in Glastonbury Jacqueline Ford, a coordinator with the state's Department of Children and Families, has overseen a program called The Olive Branch, headquartered in one of the retail spaces in Somerset Square. The initiative allows families in need from across the region to pick out a gift for the holidays for free, and wrap it. And the service isn't just limited to the holiday season. The Olive Branch is available throughout the year for families celebrating birthdays and other special events. And in line with holiday giving, we have a story about City Lifestyle’s Giving Campaign, which is donating $300,000 this holiday season to help people in need. If you're looking for a bit of entertainment to get you in the spirit of the season, Ballet Hartford has kicked off its series of performances of The Nutcracker. The ballet company's director, Hannah Bush, shares with us the history of the company and how it's grown over the years. We also have a story on where you can find a Christmas tree in our area, including E. Draghi & Sons Farm, where they will deliver your tree as well. Looking for an extra special gift this year for a loved one? We checked in with Lux Bond & Green, which has a store here in Somerset Square. The 124-year-old jewelry store is one of the longest continuously operating, singularly owned jewelers in the United States and sells some of the most sought-after jewelry and watches in the world. Finally, in a nod to the festive feel of the season for our recipe this month we picked out two of our favorite champagne-based cocktails because nothing says celebrate like a bit of bubbly. It was the late-1800s when Morris A. Green began loading up his horse and cart for a day of selling and repairing gold eye frames, chains and pocket watches along the streets of bustling downtown Waterbury. The teenager was a long way from his home in Lithuania, but he knew something that was key to every successful business. “Something was needed and he was an entrepreneur. He asked, ‘What can I do?’,” says his great-grandson, John Green. “‘Let me help you and let me be a part of this community.’” It’s a mindset that resonates with John Green, president & CEO of Lux Bond & Green, the 124-year-old business that grew from Green’s visionary beginnings. “People say there’s no loyalty in today’s world. That’s hogwash,” John says. “If you give something of great value with exceptional customer service, your customers will come back and they will tell other people about you. I’ve waited on three generations of families and it’s the customers who keep us in business. “Our industry had especially strong sales with 2021 being a record year,” he says. Why are watches so coveted? “There are a lot of reasons,” John says. “it’s something that gets worn every day. You hear people say, ‘When I don’t have my watch on, I feel naked.’ And it’s true. And they’re symbolic – of family, of success, of personal style in the shape or type of watch.” In addition to the shifting economy, many small businesses were more nimble than their bigger competitors, able to offer personalized concierge service, contactless virtual consultations and speedy delivery customers appreciated. During the pandemic, the price for previously owned watches actually outpaced that of new models, in large part because the demand went through the roof and some required a several-month to multi-year wait. It’s easy to see why when one looks at the vintage watch market for models associated with Connecticut’s own Paul Newman. The Westport actor and race car driver once gave his daughter’s boyfriend one of his own Rolexes for doing some yard work. That same watch – a sleek Daytona chronograph style he probably bought for about $1,500, John estimates – sold in 2017 for more than $15 million. As an authorized Rolex dealer, Lux Bond & Green has a set number of exhibition watches from the brand. The company keeps a client book of customers looking for particular models as well as other popular styles and brands. In recent years, Lux Bond & Green has added Tudor watches, a Swiss brand founded by Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex. A move towards larger, statement watches has meant a move away from men’s and women’s designations and to designating sizes by millimeters. “Large watches are not just for men anymore,” he says. “Now we just call them by size.” While watches make up an important part of their business, the company has also expanded its diamond offerings in recent years and it sports a full line of distinctive jewelry and gifts for all occasions. Some pieces are manufactured and engraved on-site and the company has built a reputation with top international designers, such as David Yurman and Roberto Coin. Other respected brands include Ippolita, Mikimoto, Breitling, Shinola, Baccarat, Tag Heuer and Simon Pearce. This holiday season Green predicts many will be looking for gold jewelry that is quite popular now. In addition, he expects to see the usual rush on winter holiday engagement diamonds as well as an expanded interest in men’s jewelry. Green believes the 34-year-old Glastonbury location thrives because the professional staff – including a goldsmith and designer on-premise – is not just on commission and truly cares about the long-term relationships with customers. “We treat people like family,” John says, “and we’ve always tried to be a leader.” D ECEMBER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Oh, Christmas Tree! THE MOST COMMON AND POPULAR TREES ARE GROWN IN CONNECTICUT An evergreen holiday arrangement at Draghi Farms

When it comes to Christmas trees, there are dozens of different types grown in the state and across the country, including firs, pines and spruces. Many people have their personal favorites. Some seek out the blue spruce for its sturdy needles and subtle bluish coloring. Others lean toward the unique needle clusters of the Scotch pine. Still, others prefer the reliable pyramid shape of the Douglas fir. The Fraser fir is one of the most common Christmas trees sold in the U.S. The evergreen’s aromatic pine scent, long-lasting needles and sturdy branches that can handle heavier ornaments, make it one of the most popular of all live Christmas trees. It’s why E. Draghi and Sons Farms in South Glastonbury sells only Connecticut-grown Fraser firs starting just after Thanksgiving Day, says Cheryl Draghi Martin.

“It’s the best tree because it doesn’t shed, it doesn’t drop its needles and it’s reliably long-lasting,” she says. Right around Thanksgiving Draghi’s gets its first shipment of hundreds of Fraser firs, ranging from 3 feet to 12 feet tall. Draghi’s also provides local delivery (Glastonbury and Portland) of its Christmas trees. Workers at the longtime family-owned farm begin making Christmas wreaths and other fresh evergreen arrangements before Thanksgiving and ready its hundreds of live poinsettia plants for sale. Around the same time, the farmstand’s bakery is in full gear making holiday goodies for Thanksgiving and Christmas. “It’s a really busy time of year for us. We do all kinds of Christmas greens, wreaths and arrangements for inside and out. We make evergreen garlands and we make nonperishable gift baskets and holiday foods.” The story of the modern Christmas tree tradition came from a medieval Europe mid-winter celebration that included bringing pine trees or boughs inside. But long before that evergreens were also used by ancient Egyptians, Chinese and Hebrews to symbolize eternal life, according to Britannica.com. If you’re looking to buy a live tree this year there are several local farms, along with Draghi’s, where you can pick one out. The East Glastonbury Fire Department, Co 3, 1089 Chestnut Hill Road, will be selling

Christmas trees this year along the side yard of the station. They typically are open on the weekends from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Other times, fire officials set up a mailbox outside with tags in it so people can tag a tree and members can arrange when to deliver it. The department delivers its trees to Glastonbury residents. In addition, the Connecticut Tree Growers Association has a listing of farms on its website, CtChristmastrees.org, where you can cut your own fresh tree.

The Olive Branch name comes from the desire to help families who are receiving services from the Department of Children and Families by extending a hand to offer goodwill, and peacebuilding between our department and the families we serve says Jacqueline Ford, the Community Outreach Coordinator for DCF who helped launch The Olive Branch. “The symbolism of the olive branch felt like it could perfectly portray the message we were hoping our families would receive. DCF is often perceived as powerful and authoritative and our work in the child welfare system can be frightening for families. To have this opportunity to extend homage to our families is a true privilege” she says. And, she adds, that’s exactly what the store is. It’s open to families that have active DCF cases, primarily serving the Hartford, Manchester, New Britain, Meriden, Middletown, and New Haven communities. Open by appointment only, what started as a holiday shop has now expanded to help families with other celebratory events, such as birthdays, religious milestones, quinceaneras, prom, and graduations.
One of the major themes that Ford has observed working with parents and families is the relief they feel at being able to shop for their children, gift wrap those items and leave the store feeling as if they have a hand in creating joy for their children. “I’ve witnessed first-hand parents who cautiously walk through the front doors, not knowing what to expect. They are greeted warmly, with kindness and no judgment. They choose each gift with great intention and carefully giftwrapped each item. Our staff mingled with our families, they talked and joked, carrying on everyday conversations, with no mention of their open DCF cases or of their struggles. Some parents cry, happy tears, and leave the experience with hugs and gratitude.” She’s thrilled, she adds, to see how the store has grown and has even started collecting donations for Christmas trees to help provide the full holiday experience for each family. The Olive Branch is open for donations year-round. Ford wants families to know that those interested in donating can be reassured that the families who will benefit are grateful for their donation. October 18, 2022: Nestled away from the busy morning traffic, dancers grab their bags, pointe shoes and stride toward the doors of their studio, 224 EcoSpace, sore muscles reminding them of yesterday’s rehearsal. Early risers are mid-stretch, while the remaining dancers trickle in slowly, finding their barre spot, finishing coffee and perfecting hair. Every dancer’s preparation for the day is different; individualized routines and rituals have been crafted over time to best prepare the body and mind for the day ahead. Promptly, at 9:30 a.m. class begins and bodies start to move in unison through patterns that have withstood the test of time. In many ways, ballet is timeless; for centuries, dancers have practiced a series of movements, codified in French, which stretch, strengthen and align the body. When the first ballet school opened in France in 1661, the codified vocabulary spread throughout the world. Just over 270 years after its established birth, ballet as we know it would change forever, with Hartford playing a pivotal role. October 18, 1933: The man later known as the Father of American Ballet sets foot on American soil. The Wadsworth Museum in Hartford secures the needed funding and
paperwork to bring George Balanchine, Russian-born ballet genius and choreographer, to America. The mastermind behind Balanchine’s arrival in Hartford is the director of the Wadsworth, Chick Austin. Young, innovative, and desiring broadened art exposure, alongside balletomane, Lincoln Kirstein, work in tandem to bring Russian ballet to America. Their shared vision and financial backing land Balanchine in Hartford, ushering in a new era of the art form with the birth of neoclassical ballet. Although a series of events would later place Balanchine in New York City as the founder of New York City Ballet, it is imperative to acknowledge Austin, Kirstein and Hartford as the catalyst of this momentous advent. With Balanchine’s influence sending neoclassical ballet racing across America, prestigious companies begin to surface among the states; a notable one being the former Hartford Ballet. With its exceptional reputation and dedicated audience, Hartford Ballet performed for decades before its closure in the mid-1990s. In 2016, Ballet Hartford was established. Its mission is to bring and to be art for the city through high-caliber excellence and professionalism in technique and artistry. CONTINUED >

Currently led by Artistic Director, Leyna Doran, and Company Manager, Hannah Bush, the organization is devoted to honoring the rich history of ballet here in Hartford from the times of Balanchine’s presence until now. Much like the young, ambitious, and arts-minded friendship between Chick Austin and Lincoln Kirstein, both Doran and Bush are committed to seeing the arts flourish, transform the community, and bring revitalization to the Greater Hartford area. With Doran stepping into her role as Artistic Director just prior to the onslaught of COVID-19, and Bush a few months after, the global pause paved the way for ample time to build relationships within the community. The 224 EcoSpace at 224 Farmington Ave., is an expansive center once home to the Hartford Ballet. It graciously houses Ballet Hartford and its accompanying school. Classical music, once again, fills the grand studios, as dancers jump, spin, and suspend time with ethereal grace and control. Amidst the classes, demonstrations, and rehearsals, an overwhelming sense of gratitude fills the space. Echoes of the great ballets created in the past ring from the special Marley flooring to the sky-light, vaulted ceilings. The past is honored and in Hartford, ballet is back where it belongs.

CHAMPAGNE JULEP INGREDIENTS Fresh Mint Leaves 1 sugar cube 1 tablespoon bourbon 5 ounces champagne
INSTRUCTIONS This is a variation of the classic mint julep and it's served in some of the swanky cafes in Paris. In a champagne flute glass muddle, several mint leaves with the sugar cube and bourbon. Top with champagne. Garnish with a mint leaf and bourbon-soaked cherry.

A few years back a friend gave me a small book of champagne cocktail recipes. I use it most often during the holidays because of how fun and festive these drinks are. Plus, they’re a lighter alternative to the usual heavy winter and holiday drinks many hosts serve. You don’t have to limit yourself to champagne in these recipes, prosecco or any kind of sparkling wine will do just as nicely. And you don’t need to spend a lot on your bubbly. A more expensive bottle of champagne will yield a drier cocktail, less expensive ones tend to be sweeter.
STRAWBERRY SPARKLER INGREDIENTS Fresh strawberries (enough for a garnish and one ounce of puree) Simple syrup 4 ounces champagne INSTRUCTIONS While we normally think of summer when it comes to strawberry drinks, I like this at the holidays for its rich, red color. In a blender combine the strawberries and a dash of simple syrup. Blend until frothy. Strain the puree and then add an ounce to a flute glass. Top with champagne. Garnish with a sprig of thyme and rosemary.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
