LIFESTYLE LETTER

JULY 2021 PUBLISHER

Time For Fun in the Summer Sun! JULY IS THE MONTH OF HOT DOGS, FIREWORKS, THE BEACH AND PICNICS. The days are long, often hot, and even the nights can be warm. The flowers are in full bloom and berry picking at local farms is open, so it’s the time of year when we spend a lot of time outdoors.

While Covid restrictions are easing significantly this summer, we’ve all become more comfortable with the great outdoors after months of forced exclusions and limitations on indoor gatherings. In this month’s issue we looked at some of our typical summertime activities. We visited E. Draghi and Sons Farm Stand at 80 Main St., in South Glastonbury. This family-owned business has deep roots locally, starting out first as a family orchard on Foote Road that later transitioned into offering more than just apples and cider at its farm stand on Route 17. And in July Draghi’s Farm Stand really comes into full bloom, with its retail greenhouses overflowing with flowers and plants, fruits, vegetables and fresh-baked goods await inside the farm stand store. Our thanks to Draghi’s Farm Stand for helping our photographer, Carrie Draghi Photography of Glastonbury, to get this month’s stunning cover shot, taken inside one of the company’s greenhouses. If you’re spending a lot more time in your yard than usual this July you may want to consider getting it treated to mitigate disease-carrying insects. We spoke with Mosquito Joe CT Shoreline East, which services central Connecticut towns, about its programs and what kind of insects we should be concerned about.

Lastly, our business profile this month focuses on MC Wealth Solutions Group, a full service wealth management firm that partners with RBC Wealth Management to bring a holistic approach to financial planning. So grab your margarita or mojito, kick back in a lounger and enjoy this month’s refreshing issue of Glastonbury Lifestyle. Cheers and happy Fourth of July!

SUMMER SIPS T H E S T R A W B E R R Y G I N M O J I T O BILL DRIGGS IS SERVING UP THIS SPECIAL MOJITO THIS SUMMER AT HIS 2 Hopewell Bistro & Bar. He says using local ingredients for the Strawberry Gin Mojito is key in this drink’s light, fruity flavor. “What makes this a great drink is the light and refreshing flavor profile and the use of seasonal, local ingredients! A perfect summer drink!”

INGREDIENTS + 2 oz Bar Hill Gin + 1.5 oz of Strawberry Puree (it’s the best when local Glastonbury Strawberries are in season) + 1/2 oz of simple syrup + 1 oz fresh lime juice + Fresh mint + Splash of Club Soda

Bob Costa, managing partner of Max Fish restaurant, credits the eatery’s head bartender, Andres Soriano for developing this elegant summer drink, the Ti-Texas. It calls for two liquors you might not have on hand but you’ll want to get. Velvet Falernum is a syrup liqueur from the Caribbean typically used for tropical drinks. It combines flavors of ginger, lime, almond, cloves and allspice. Curacao is a type of orange liquor, sort of a spicy take on triple sec.

INGREDIENTS + 3/4 ounce of Velvet Felernum + 3/4 ounce of dry curacao + 3/4 ounce of lemon juice + 2 ounces of Tito’s vodka.

DIRECTIONS Combine all ingredients in a shaker over ice and shake. Strain into a Coupe glass and garnish with a dry orange wheel.

Probably nothing says summer like watermelon. And luckily, the drink specialists at Bricco’s Trattoria have come up with a perfect summer margarita! Our thanks to Jonathan Gyles and his team for this refreshingly cool take on a summer standard.

INGREDIENTS + 2 oz. Fresh watermelon purée + 1 1/2 oz Blanco tequila + 1/2 oz Amber agave nectar + 3/4 oz Fresh squeezed lime juice + Splash of Seltzer + Sugar rim on glass + Garnish with fresh watermelon wedge

DIRECTIONS To make the watermelon puree blend seedless watermelon cubes until liquified. Shake the puree, tequila, agave, and lime juice until the shaker becomes frosted. Dip the glass in lime juice then shimmy into some sugar. Add large ice cubes and pour the shaken cocktail over the ice. Add a spritz of your favorite soda water, and dunk in a wedge of watermelon. You can freeze any extra puree for later use or use it to make ice cubes to serve with the drink. Enjoy!

FORBIDDEN MOJITO

The folks at Cotton Hollow Kitchen have developed their own take on the mojito, this one a “forbidden” version that apparently takes that name from the use of Patron’s Añejo tequila, which is aged for 12 months and has an alcohol content of 40 percent.

INGREDIENTS + 1 1/2 oz. Patron Añejo Tequila + 6-8 Mint Leaves (depending on size) + 0.5 oz. Fresh Lime Juice + 0.5 oz. Real Kiwi Purée (Real is a brand available at Stop & Shop or package stores) + Ripe Agave Mojito Blend (Ripe is a brand available at Whole Foods or some package stores)

DIRECTIONS Add mint leaves to shaker, fill with ice, add tequila, lime juice and kiwi. Shake and double strain into a high ball glass filled with ice. Fill the rest of the highball glass with ripe agave Mojito. Garnish with mint and a lime wheel. "Clean, crisp delicious and incredibly refreshing," says Cotton Hollow's owner, Mark Conley.

E. DRAGHI AND SONS FARM STAND IN SOUTH GLASTONBURY IS AN ICONIC SUMMER STOP

JULY IS HIGH SUMMER, THAT TIPPING POINT WHERE FARM STANDS ARE OVERFLOWING WITH ABUNDANT BLOOMS IN EVERY COLOR AND A CORNUCOPIA OF SUMMER FRUITS AND VEGGIES ARE NOW MAKING THEIR DEBUT. For the folks at E. Draghi and Sons Farms in South Glastonbury, this time of year is the culmination of months of planning and planting for the farming family, which owns and operates a popular farm stand at 80 Main St. But to call it a ‘farm stand’ is an understatement that doesn’t cover the incredible diversity of fresh foods, plants, bakery goods and flowers Draghi’s creates, grows and sells at its Route 17 facility. But first, a bit of history about the family and its business. In 1917 Angelo Draghi and his wife, Josephina, bought a farm on Foote Road. Dotted with fruit trees, the land reminded the couple of the Italian countryside where they once lived. Angelo, and later his sons, cleared the property enough to plant dozens more apple trees and settled into farming his orchard with his family.

LOCALLY OWNED (CONTINUED)

The farm passed to two of Angelo’s and Josephine’s sons who expanded the business to include off-site farms and the purchase of the farm stand in 1968. The family later built a cider mill at the stand. “Initially, we made tons of cider,” says Cheryl Draghi, the third generation Draghi to work in the family business. “When I was little I used to help out by jugging cider, both gallon and half-gallon jugs. We made cider for lots of local businesses and for the Apple Festival.” By the late 1970s the business was owned by two of Angelo’s sons, Gino (Cheryl’s dad) and his brother Andy. Cheryl’s brother, Darrell, bought out his Uncle Andy's share of the business and became partners with his dad, Gino. Together, they expanded the farm stand, added greenhouses and began selling a wider diversity of goods. Draghi’s grows plants and flowers at its six greenhouses on the hillside behind the farm stand. The business sells a great many other products as well. There is a small store where customers can buy basic goods such as eggs, milk, bread and cheeses. “Our pantry shelves are lined with a large variety of Connecticut and Vermont Maple Syrups, local honey, jams, jellies, no-sugar preserves, fruit spreads and butters, salsas, pickled vegetables, salad dressings, marinades, relishes, mustards, dessert toppings, old fashioned candies, maple candies, fudge, a variety of nuts and dried fruits, a large selection of spices as well as an assortment of Stonewall Kitchen products,” the company’s website says. More recently the farm stand has been selling frozen meats, including beef, pork and chicken, to round out the offerings. The family also sells a wide variety of homemade jams and jellies and there is an on-site bakery where Draghi’s two bakers each day churn out cakes, breads, cookies, quiches, pies and much more. They also sell dairy products, eggs and homemade ice cream. While fruits and vegetables are available in the store year-round, the farm stand begins selling native fresh produce in May, starting with asparagus and spinach and other early spring crops. By mid-summer the stand is brimming with fresh, local produce, a lot of it grown by the Draghis themselves. Darrell’s and Cheryl’s parents, Gino and Sandy, still live on the family homestead on Foote Road and both still help out around the farm stand. “All of this is really a wonderful group family effort that we cherish," Cheryl says.
