Hello, Summer! IT’S JUNE, THE MONTH WHEN WE’RE FINALLY INTO SUMMER, THOUGH IT FEELS ODD TO SAY THAT BECAUSE AS I WRITE THIS IT’S ACTUALLY LATE APRIL AND THERE ARE SNOW FLURRIES OUTSIDE RIGHT NOW! No doubt, winter in New England really puts up a fight to hang out as long as it can. But make no mistake, summer is well underway. We just celebrated Memorial Day and before you

know it, we’ll be watching the July 4th fireworks. June is the month when we start spending a lot of time outside. The days are longer and increasingly warmer, beaches and parks beckon us and the grilling season is in full swing. June is also when we celebrate Father’s Day, which falls on Sunday, June 20, this year. To help you figure out what to get the Dad in your life this year we took a look at the Connecticut Beer Trail, the listing of all the craft breweries in the state. We narrowed it down to some of the closest breweries in our area, including our own local brewery, Hops on the HIll Farm Brewery on Dug Road. That’s where our photographer, Carrie Draghi of Carrie Draghi Photography, took this month’s cover shot. There are dozens of other breweries in the Hartford region and you could easily spend all of Father’s Day visiting just a few of them with Dad! Also in this month’s issue we bring you a mid-year financial and investment check up with Jason Cerniglia of Ameriprise Financial and Coastal Wealth Management. June is a good time, Jason says, to look at where the markets have been and where they’re headed.

Sarah and her staff have worked hard on a culture that downplays the ideals of female perfection. The owner of Sarah Victor Beauty, a permanent makeup studio and blow dry bar at 476 Naubuc Ave., Sarah wants her clients to feel comfortable in their own skin. “We have a very comfortable environment here and we want our clients to have a very comfortable experience." Sarah Victor Beauty is a full-service salon whose staff of six specializes in permanent makeup solutions. Sarah started Sarah Victor Beauty when she was 16, doing makeup for family and friends. Her experiences led to what she describes as a “whirlwind 20-plus year career” in beauty, including stints at MAC, Allure Magazine, Elle Magazine, and numerous other publications.
In addition, the studio offers makeup artistry and bridal beauty services. The latest addition to the salon is Glastonbury’s first blow dry bar. It’s intended for women who want their hair to look its best but don’t have the time to do it themselves. “There is absolutely nothing like this on this side of the river,” Sarah says. Sarah says the salon is probably best known for its eyebrow work. “We are the best in Connecticut for eyebrows and everybody knows that. People come from all over to have their eyebrows done here. She and her team do several different types of eyebrow shaping, including nano brows, microblading and powder brows. Permanent makeup options such as brow shaping have grown in popularity, she says.

Mid-year Investment Check JASON CERNIGLIA OF AMERIPRISE FINANCIAL AND COASTAL WEALTH MANAGEMENT, TAKES A LOOK AT OUR FINANCIAL FUTURE
FINANCIAL EXPERTS GENERALLY SUGGEST A MID-YEAR CHECKUP AROUND JUNE TO TAKE STOCK OF WHERE WE ARE FINANCIALLY AND WHAT THE OUTLOOK IS FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR. We thought a check on our market investments would make sense, given the roller coaster year we had in 2020 and the more stable environment we seem to be in thus far in 2021. We called on Jason Cerniglia, a private wealth advisor with Ameriprise Financial Services. Named to Forbes Best-in-State Wealth Advisors for 2021, Jason is also chief executive officer of Coastal Wealth Management. 1. HOW DID THE MARKET FARE IN 2020? From just a market perspective, 2020 was a very good year in terms of market return. At the beginning of the year, the market was down 35 to 40 percent, but by the end of the year it was up 17 percent. So if you were just looking at how the market performed it was a good year. But economically speaking, of course, it was a very challenging year. There was this big dichotomy between how the market had this record-breaking recovery, but economically it was a very difficult year.

FATHER’S DAY IS THE PERFECT EXCUSE TO SPEND A DAY EXPLORING LOCAL CRAFT BREW OPTIONS
FATHER’S DAY IS SUNDAY, JUNE 20, AND IT’S PROBABLY A GOOD DAY FOR DAD TO HIT THE TRAIL; THE CONNECTICUT BEER TRAIL THAT IS. What better way to celebrate the dad in your life then to take him out exploring Connecticut’s ever-growing craft breweries? After a year of being buttressed, like many businesses, by the ongoing coronavirus, the state’s craft brew industry is uniquely poised to enjoy a roaring comeback this year. Many of Connecticut’s brewers have long relied on large outdoor spaces as part of their business model. That, combined with what experts see as a massive pent-up demand by consumers to gather with friends and family, means craft breweries are likely to be one of the most popular gathering places this summer and fall. And luckily, Connecticut is home to more than a hundred craft breweries, all within about an hour’s drive. Connecticut has an official beer trail program, at connecticut.beer.com, to support its craft beer industry. You can visit the site to see the complete list of all the state’s breweries and sign up for the beer passport program. Similar to the Connecticut wine trail initiative, you get a ‘beer passport,’ collect stamps at the breweries you visit and amass points that you can cash in for prizes, such as branded hats, t-shirts and coolers.

So, if you’re ready to hop on the trail, let’s take a look at some of our local breweries, starting with one right in our own backyard, Hops on the Hill Farm Brewery at 275 Dug Road. Billed as a “farm to glass” brewery, Hops on the Hill opened about two years ago and is owned and operated by Al and Nancy Gondek. The brewery is in a 75-year-old tobacco barn located on Al’s farm that was used to dry cigar tobacco. As you drive up the driveway, you’ll see the hops that Al grows. Most of HOTH beer is made from the hops grown on their farm and from Connecticut grown grains. "Like all the great beer cultures of the world, we think of beer as food. Our hope is that when you drink our beers you have the same “mmmm” reaction as when you take a bite of fresh baked bread still warm from the oven," Al says. In addition, “Hops on the Hill Brewery welcomes Joey Lushing as the new head brewer as of January, 2021. Joey has over 20 years’ experience brewing craft beer and is a local resident of South Glastonbury.” Al says. HOTH is introducing a new line up of beers consisting of ales, IPAs, DIPAs Hefeweizens, and they are excited to now have seasonal fruit beers and sours. For non-beer drinkers, there is also wine, red and white available by the glass, locally made hard cider, non-alcohol beer, as well as a variety of soft drinks. The brewery is open on Thursdays and Fridays from 4-8 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, 1-6 p.m. There are numerous special events planned at HOTH throughout the year, Al says. “We have food trucks scheduled every day that we are open and we have private events where people can rent our tent for bridal showers, baby showers, weddings, parties and corporate fundraisers.” Some of the food trucks at Hops on the Hill

DIRECT PRIMARY CARE IS A GROWING HEALTH CARE TREND

T H E D O C T OR I S ( A LWAYS ) I N WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CALLED YOUR DOCTOR’S OFFICE AND ACTUALLY SPOKE DIRECTLY WITH YOUR PHYSICIAN? If you’re like most people, you’ve probably rarely spoken with your doctor outside of your regularly scheduled appointment at his or her office. But what if you not only had your doctor’s directdial phone number, but you could also text them at any time of the day or even on weekends? That’s the kind of patient accessibility Dr. Vasanth Kainkaryam offers in his medical practice, 4 Elements Direct Primary Care. Under the practice’s business model, Dr. Kainkaryam doesn’t take insurance payments;

based elsewhere in another part of the country. You actually will get a person located locally at Dime. There’s also continuity in Dime’s relationships with their customers, she says. She and other employees of the local branches get to know their customers directly and understand their unique needs. “We’re one of the only community banks left in the Greater Hartford area. We bring personalized service. People know who we are and our customers don’t get lost in the shuffle. We will come to the customers if that’s necessary. I’ve done that before.” IN AN AGE OF BIG BANK MERGERS AND ACQUISITIONS, DIME BANK HAS STAKED OUT A UNIQUE POSITION.
A community bank like Dime, Nick says, also puts a priority on the needs of small local businesses.
“We are what we call a real community bank,” says Nick

West Middle Turnpike in Manchester. Dime took over the location where a United Bank used to be in Glastonbury after United was bought out by People’s, a larger statewide financial institution. That kind of merger, Nick says, is exactly why Dime decided to test the waters of the Hartford market. “The whole trend of banking mergers and acquisitions has been going on for some time and there are fewer real community banks left.
“We were created as a mutual bank and the driving force behind a mutual bank like ours is to do what’s best for our customers, our employees and our community.”
We’ve never issued publicly traded stock so we don’t have shareholders we have to answer to. You don’t grow as fast, but if you’re in this for the long term, profitability is not your only motive. “Our employees are all local people, it’s not as if we hire someone and then transfer them to a location they’re not familiar with. And,

our employees are encouraged to volunteer in their community. So we’re making investments, in many ways, in the community.” That focus on depositors and the community is evident in how Dime and its employees interact with its local customers, says Michelle Sawyer, Dime’s area manager in Glastonbury and Manchester. For instance, Michelle says, when you call Dime Bank in Glastonbury or any local branch, you’re not calling an 800 number
