DECEMBER 2021 PUBLISHER

Gary Perrelli | gary.perrelli@lifestylepubs.com EDITOR

Happy Holidays! WHATEVER HOLIDAY YOU CELEBRATE THIS TIME OF YEAR I THINK WE CAN ALL AGREE THAT DECEMBER IS THE YEAR'S MOST FESTIVE MONTH. Some of us love the sappy, nostalgic holiday movies at Christmas and New Year's, the light displays, picking out the tree and the anticipation of Christmas morning. It's the only

time of year when we wish for snow! But there are lots of other holidays people here and around the country celebrate at this time. There’s Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Three Kings Day, as well as several others. You can read about them in our Winter Revels piece included in this month's issue. On our cover this month is Rabbi Kari Tuling from Congregation Kol Haverim located at 1079 Hebron Ave., lighting the temple's menorah to illustrate for us the concept of Hanukkah, the holiday also known as The Festival of Lights. Her photo was taken by Carrie Draghi Photography of Glastonbury. December is also the month of holiday giving and we spoke with local groups and individuals about ways you can help those in need in our community this season. People probably don't think of the needy when they think of our community, but there are folks here who could use a helping hand - working families, the disabled and the elderly - at this time of year. Our recipe this month is a holiday favorite and comes from Chris Bassette, whose

CULINARY CREATIONS

Homemade Hol iday Eg g nog ARTICLE EILEEN M. MCNAMARA

ST. PATRICK’S DAY HAS ITS GREEN BEER, NEW YEAR’S EVE HAS CHAMPAGNE, BUT THERE’S PROBABLY NO OTHER HOLIDAY SO CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH A DRINK THAN CHRISTMAS WITH EGGNOG. We asked an “eggspert” for their best eggnog recipe, Chris Bassette, whose family owns Killam & Bassette Farmstead. The family farm has about 450 chickens and sells their eggs at the farmstand.

Homemade Eggnog + 6 Killam & Bassette Farmstead Egg Yolks + 1 cup Smyth’s Trinity Farm’s Heavy Whipping Cream + 2 cups Smyth’s Trinity Farm’s Whole Milk + ½ cup sugar + ½ Tsp ground nutmeg + ⅛ Tsp ground cinnamon + ¼ Tsp vanilla extract + Cinnamon for topping

22

Glastonbury Lifestyle | December 2021

A SWEET, CREAMY HOLIDAY TRADITION

Whisk yolks and sugar together in a medium bowl until creamy. In a saucepan over medium-high heat, combine the cream, milk, nutmeg, cinnamon & salt. Stir often until mixture reaches a bare simmer. Add a large spoonful of the hot milk to the egg mixture, whisking vigorously. Repeat, adding a large spoonful at a time, to temper the eggs. Once most of the hot milk has been added to the eggs, pour the mixture back into the saucepan on the stove. Whisk constantly for just a few minutes, until the mixture is slightly thickened (or until it reaches about 160 degrees). It will thicken more as it cools. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla. Pour the eggnog into a pitcher and cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate until chilled. It will thicken as it cools. If you want a thinner, completely smooth consistency, you can add the entire mixture to a blender with 1 or 2 tablespoons of milk and blend until smooth. Serve with a sprinkle of cinnamon, and fresh whipped cream, if desired. Store eggnog in the fridge for up to one week. Enjoy!

fuel bank, rental assistance program and back to school programs. It was created by Glastonbury Social Services to assist residents experiencing a crisis situation, to help pay for food, utility bills, shelter costs, medical expenses and other critical needs. It’s funded entirely through donations and 100 percent of the money collected goes directly to residents in need. “Any donations to Glastonbury Gives helps throughout the whole year,” Carfi said. Besides the town-sponsored programs the Glastonbury Police Department, in coordination with the fire department and local emergency services, holds an annual holiday “Stuff an Emergency Vehicle” toy drive. Also each year a local bus driver for Glastonbury schools, Vinny DiNatalie, a member of the Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters, hosts a “Cram the Van” fundraiser where donors can drop off new, unwrapped toy for needy children. Again this year, DiNatalie will park his van at Irving Gas Station at 890 South Main St., in South Glastonbury where he’ll be accepting donations from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Members of the Rotary Club of Glastonbury take part each year in a baby need's drive.

Celebrations often include singing and dancing, storytelling, poetry reading, African drumming, and feasting, culminating in a communal feast known as Karamu. THREE KINGS DAY Three Kings Day commemorates the 12 days of Christmas, and culminates on Jan. 6 with celebrations. The holiday celebrates the birth of Christ and the presentation of the baby Jesus to the Magi, or the three wise men, who brought the baby Jesus gifts in the manger. Also known as the Epiphany, Three Kings Day is popular in Latin American countries and among Americans of Hispanic descent. The holiday dates back to the 4th Century and there are numerous traditions associated with it, including the exchange of gifts and an outdoor feast of traditional foods featuring the “king’s cake,” shaped like a wreath. GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy

To submit a nomination, follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram and fill out the form found in the bio link. The amount given to each recipient will be based on need.
