DOCTORPRENEUR: DOCTOR FIRST. BUSINESSMAN SECOND. What I love about what I do is that my focus is on my patients. Because I don’t bill insurance companies, I'm not incentivized to do more to generate more revenue. I don’t have anyone telling me how many patients I need to see a day. I don’t have anyone telling me how long I can spend with each patient. Through my low monthly membership model that starts at $35/month for direct access Adult and Pediatric Primary Care, I get to focus on you. Join me over a cup of coffee?

NOVEMBER 2021 PUBLISHER

Gary Perrelli | gary.perrelli@lifestylepubs.com EDITOR

Welcome to our November issue! THIS EDITION IS CALLED OUR THANKFUL ISSUE BECAUSE WE CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING, NOT JUST AS A HOLIDAY OF FOOD AND FOOTBALL, BUT THAT TIME WHEN WE GIVE THANKS FOR ALL WE HAVE. As part of that, we also are thankful to those who give back to our community, like the members of the Glaston-

bury Rotary Club, who give up their time and financial resources to help others. The local and the national Rotary have a long tradition of finding ways to build up and sustain local communities, and even those located thousands of miles away, by raising the helping hands and funds needed to make improvements to local parks and gathering places, provide scholarships to high school students going off to college, help house veterans, and support a myriad of other local nonprofits and public organizations. Members of the Glastonbury Rotary live the group’s mission of “Service to Others Above Self.” In a nod to Thanksgiving this month we also have for you two recipes in time for the big feast. A traditional pumpkin pie recipe (complete with a mouth-watering, flaky pie dough recipe) and an Orange and Sweet Potato Puree recipe. Each were supplied by two local chefs, Niels van Galen of Cotton Hollow Kitchen and Ed Esnault Chef De Cuisine at Big Night Entertainment Group. The days before and after Thanksgiving have become the official kickoff of the holiday shopping season. There’s Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and for local businesses,

Lastly, if you’re in the market for insurance or just need an insurance maintenance check up to make sure your coverages are adequate, you might want to consider talking to a professional agent. For our cover photo this month, shot by Carrie Draghi Photography, we asked Jenni Haffner of Barn Door Blooms, a Glastonbury florist, for a Thanksgiving themed floral centerpiece, and boy, did she deliver! exquisite custom engagement rings, tennis bracelets and anniversary earrings, to name just a few of the fine pieces the couple create. “My dream was always to come to the United States and work for myself and make our own jewelry,” Roberto says. He began developing his own client base and the couple made custom jewelry pieces out of their home for years before they struck out on their own and opened their Glastonbury store. “The business began by word of mouth and it just kept growing and growing,” Cristina said. De Rosa Fine Diamonds designs each custom piece based on input from their clients and from stones Roberto and Cristina buy directly from stone cutters.

“Unlike most jewelry stores, we’re not sending pieces out and ordering items. We are creating pieces in house,” Cristina said. All of De Rosa’s jewelry is made with the purest 18 karat gold and platinum settings, Roberto proudly points out. And his work can minimize the amount of metal that shows in the settings so that the natural beauty of the stones shine brightly. To illustrate his work, he shows off a gleaming 3-karat diamond engagement ring set in platinum that he recently completed for a client. “See? You don’t see the metal around the stones because the setting is underneath the diamonds. There’s not a lot of metal and the diamonds just sparkle.” Other recent custom work that rests in the cases behind him

LOCAL LIMELIGHT ARTICLE EILEEN M. MCNAMARA

THERE’S AN OLD QUOTE THAT GOES SOMETHING LIKE “WHATEVER EXCUSES YOU HAVE FOR NOT BUYING LIFE INSURANCE WILL SOMEDAY SOUND RIDICULOUS TO YOUR WIDOW.” You could apply that to all insurance with another oft-repeated phrase “You don’t realize how important insurance is until you need it.” But how do you figure out what you need, how much and when? Independent insurance agents deal with those questions on a daily basis and it’s why their role is crucial when it comes time to buy insurance. “Insurance can be a complicated purchase. You’re not buying bread or milk. You’re buying a promise of protection that could potentially make or break your financial well-being,” says the company Mutual Benefit Group, which stresses that an agent can act as your advocate and advisor, an opinion echoed by local agents. Here are three who weighed in on the topic of why you should use an agent when buying insurance.

22

Glastonbury Lifestyle | November 2021

When to Use A Local Insurance Agent

C O E B A N C R O F T, C P C U INDEPENDENT STATE FARM AGENT “It’s great to have insurance with an agent who you can talk to directly about things like whether or not to put in a claim or when to put in a claim. If you call an insurer directly you’ll never talk to the same person more than once. Having an agent who understands you, your situation and the claims process is a big help because insurance is something you really should have guidance on. If you call my office you’re going to get experienced, caring people who can answer your questions and guide them on what their policy covers. It’s a lot better than calling a company directly. And having an agent who lives where you live is important as well. Certainly there are coverages that are more important in Connecticut than in other parts of the country. Liability interest will change depending on income and assets and I like to guide people to help them make informed decisions. Having previously worked in claims I’ve seen how different coverages have played out and I’m not going to recommend all the bells and whistles if they don’t need them. “ Coe Bancroft State Farm Insurance 103 New London Turnpike, Suite A Coebancroft.com 860-633-3736 CONTINUED >

GERMANY JIMENEZ INDEPENDENT GEICO AGENT “Your GEICO local agent and your local insurance office can do many lines of insurance such as auto, homeowners, RV, motorcycle, boat, Identity Theft and umbrella coverage. With a local office you get that local experience and knowledge. We work for the customer, whereas if you just go online and look for a policy you just get a quote after filling out a form. But that doesn’t mean you’re getting the coverage and protection that are best for you. A local agent can do all of that. We make sure we get you the best rate with the best protection. We advocate for our clients, but we also educate them on our products and what’s best for them and why. We can also help them look down the road and plan for future needs, especially now with natural disasters on the rise. Home ownership is one of the greatest assets and investments so having the right and adequate coverage is critical. Wouldn’t You Like Your Bank to Treat You the Same Way You Treat Your Customers? If the answer is yes, maybe it’s time for you to look for a new and better business banking relationship. SHOP SMALL SATURDAY IS NOV. 27 THIS YEAR, BUT BUSINESS LEADERS SAY WE SHOULD SHOP SMALL YEAR-ROUND

THANKSGIVING IS A TIME WHEN WE GATHER AT HOME WITH LOVED ONES TO CELEBRATE, WITH AN ABUNDANCE OF FOOD, ANOTHER YEAR TOGETHER. It’s also a time when we show our appreciation to the small businesses, on Shop Small Saturday, in our communities. Established by American Express in 2009 and held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the event, is also known as Small Business Saturday. This year, it falls on Nov. 27. Since small businesses make up more than 99 percent of all businesses in the country - and employ nearly 50 percent of all workers - supporting your local small businesses is important to the overall health of your community. With every dollar you spend in a local business nearly 70 percent of that money stays right in your hometown. But while setting aside a special day to show some love to local businesses is a nice gesture, tending to them year-round is even more important, says Jessica Olander, president of the Connecticut River Valley Chamber of Commerce. “We should shop small and shop local all year long for the health of our business community,” she said.

SHOPPING SMALL IS A BIG DEAL FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES (CONTINUED)

She also stressed that with the pandemic putting strains on supply chains locally and throughout the country, holiday shoppers should try to visit local businesses as early as possible this year to make their holiday purchases. The chamber this Fall is starting to look at new advocacy programs for local and small businesses through legislative agenda partnerships with organizations such as the Connecticut Business and Industry Association, the Small Business Administration, and the Small Business Development Center. “When you advocate for small business you have a say on legislation that gets passed that can impact small businesses,” Jessica said. Glastonbury Lifestyle partners with numerous local businesses throughout the year. PUMPKIN PIE Ed Esnault, Chef De Cuisine at Big Night Entertainment Group, shares this traditional pie recipe and his secret for the flakiest crust!

INGREDIENTS Pumpkin Pie : For the pie filling + 3 Eggs + 1 + ½ cup cooked sugar pumpkin puree + 1 cup sugar + ½ teaspoon salt + 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon + ½ teaspoon ground ginger + ¼ teaspoon ground cloves + 1+1/2 cups half and half + ½ tablespoon sugar

DIRECTIONS Roll dough and place in pie pan. Cover the bottom with baking paper and add pie weight. Bake at 375 until dough is set but hasn’t started to color, about 12 minutes. Cool shell, remove weight and paper. Beat eggs lightly, stir in pumpkin puree. Mix first measure of sugar, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves. Add to egg mixture. Stir in half-and-half and pour into shell. Sprinkle remaining sugar on top. Bake at 375, about 50 minutes or until filling has puffed slightly and is firm around edges.

INGREDIENTS Flaky Pie Dough + 3 cups all-purpose flour + 1 teaspoon salt + 1 tablespoon sugar + 6 ounces cold, unsalted butter, cut into small cubes + 1/3 cup chilled shortening + 6-8 tablespoons ice cold water

DIRECTIONS Combine flour, salt and sugar in a bowl. Add the cold butter and shortening and pinch the fat into the size of hazelnuts with your fingertips or a pastry blender. Add the ice water and mix with your hands just until dough comes together, the butter should still be lumpy. Gather the dough into a ball. Flatten into a disk to help it chill faster.. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and allow it to rest in the refrigerator for at least one hour. The pie dough should rest an additional 30 minutes after it is rolled out to prevent shrinkage as it bakes. CityLifestyle.com/Glastonbury

also has funded numerous local projects, including the thermal imaging equipment for the fire department, the display units at the Connecticut Audubon Center, the High Street School softball field, the GLAD Parenting Seminar Program and the renovation at the Glastonbury Art Guild Building. The club sponsors and helps lead Glastonbury High School’s Interact Club, which promotes leadership skills and community service among local teenagers. Rotary members donate their time and energy toward “hands- on” projects as well. Whether it’s building softball dugouts at the high school, refurbishing playgrounds at the Maria Sanchez School in Hartford, or putting up “Welcome to Glastonbury” signs in town, Rotarians welcome the opportunity to work together and get the job done. The club is currently partnering with the town on the installation of a new splash pad feature at Addison Park, which should be completed by the spring of 2022, said Jason Hoeppner, the Glastonbury Rotary’s current president. The club also more recently has undertaken several local and state-wide Covid relief efforts.
