Hello October! "I'M SO GLAD I LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE THERE ARE OCTOBERS." That's a quote from L.M. Montgomery, from her book "Anne of Green Gables." I think it sums up nicely how many of us feel about the onset of autumn in New England. The brilliant colors, the cool nights, the abundance still of the fall harvest, including

all those apples! For Glastonbury Lifestyle, October is our food edition and this month we look at some of the unique eateries we have here in town, including Gbury2Go, a gourmet takeout restaurant, Foxy Pizza, a longtime family-run eatery that's been in business for more than half a century, and two new entrants into Glastonbury's restaurant scene, the Tenth Hole Tavern at Minnechaug Golf Course and Zinneken's Belgian Waffles and Cafe. The locally-owned Zinneken's provided the inspiration for this month's cover photo by Carrie Draghi Photographer of Glastonbury. The "Insanity Liege Waffle" is one of many the locally owned Zinneken's franchise makes at their new store on New London Turnpike. In keeping with our food issue theme we talked to organizers of the town's threeday Glastonbury Apple Harvest & Music Festival, which opens Friday, Oct. 15, and runs throughout the weekend. We look at what's new for this year and what traditions remain for the popular festival, which took a break last year because of the pandemic. October is the time when many folks start leaving New England for their winter

Founded in 1975 by Georgia Varlas and her late brother, Van Tsouvalis, Foxy Pizza is an iconic local restaurant. Georgia and her husband operated a chain of pizza eateries in New England throughout the 1950s and 1960s, but after his death Georgia and her brother decided to consolidate those businesses closer to home. Georgia has always played a leading role in running the restaurant and while her children - and even grandchildren - now help manage it.
There are two different types of waffles offered at Zinneken’s, the Liege, made from a dough featuring caramelized Belgian pearl sugar, and the Brussels, a light and crispy waffle made from batter. “All of our ingredients are imported from Europe to make the most authentic Belgian waffle outside of Belgium," Elizabeth says. Getting burned at the beach happens… but it shouldn’t at your bank. Wouldn’t it be nice to relax this summer knowing your bank will be waiting for you when you get home? Unfortunately, several local banks will once again be merging, changing names, or leaving town altogether — if one of these is your bank, isn’t it time you made some changes too? At Dime Bank, we are welcoming customers who have had enough — and we’ve been doing it for over 150 summers.

“The CT River Valley Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the Glastonbury 46th Annual Apple Harvest & Music Festival will take place at Riverfront Park, 300 Welles St., on October 15, 16 and 17.” The festival will open on Friday, from 6 to 10 p.m., Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m, and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

And, of course, there will be pies, Chip said, but he stressed those who want to buy the locally made treats might want to do so ahead of time as the chamber will begin selling them online before the festival and organizers aren’t sure how many will actually still be available the weekend of the event. The 18th annual road race starts at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. The race, which attracts thousands of runners from around the country, is a certified course and is flat and fast. This year it will also be digitally chip timed. Entry fees are $30 for preregistration and $40 the day of the race. Runners and walkers can take part in the race and the registration fee gives participants free access to the Harvest Pub. "We're expecting lots of fun on the midway, great music in the pub and a great turnout for our annual road race. Everyone's just so happy to have the festival back this year and we're hoping it will be one of our best festivals ever."

a lot of shared values in and around food; they have really great cheese, dairy, beef, pasta, but very few tourists, hardly any. So if you love Italy, that kind of specific travel and food experience, particularly Northern Italy, because you can see the Alps from where they are.
