February is the month of love, and one local business is committed to the idea of love year-round. Why I Love Where I Live is a local spot focused on cultivating a love for all things local. According to Kristin Tovar, Co-Founder, and owner of Why I Love Where I Live, her love for Arizona is what sparked the idea for the retail boutique. “The brand was born out of an Arizona native seeking to make the most of staying close to home rather than endlessly seeking all the other great places one could live. We have the heart for everyone to find the good and celebrate all that home has to offer, wherever that may be.” Kristin was born and raised in the Phoenix area and her husband, Alex, is a native

Tucsonan. They definitely have Arizona at heart when it comes to showing the locals how to love. The message of loving where you live is the focus of the business, bringing other like-minded people together. “We sell clothing, books, toys, home décor, and accessories that encourage people to love where they live, not just to consume it but to contribute to it with their whole life,” shares Kristen. Through resources, online community, and a local shop, Why I Love Where I Live, simply wants to bring people together where they live, and help them find goods they can use. “There’s an important relationship we

have with our place in that the more we love a place, the more we invest in it, and therefore, the greater our affection becomes, creating a life-giving cycle of benefit to ourselves and the world around us.” The whole thing began after Kristin started an Instagram account as an experiment in practicing gratitude. She began taking pictures of things she loved or found enjoyable, and that helped her grow her curiosity and her love for Tucson, where they were living at the time. “It changed my mindset and transformed other areas of my life and my family's life as well,” says Kristin. “The social media account grew into a business through in-person events and community interaction. engage in the local community with a sense of pride and ownership. This is done through sharing our story, selling merchandise to inspire and encourage others, sharing photos, celebrating good things, and hosting community events.” Not only does the couple work hard to bring the best goods, but they are also working to build a sense of community. “We try to engage people in fun and creative ways no matter where they’re at on the scale of loving where they live.” Though the concept began in Tucson, it has grown beyond Southern Arizona and now has a location in Gilbert as well. But why Gilbert of all places? Kristin says the growth in the area was one of the main reasons why. “It came down to the people and the international development

of Agritopia & Epicenter.” Eight years after they toured the area with Joe Johnston, they were personally drawn to the area, spot for growth, and most importantly, the people. “We were also drawn to the other local businesses that are a part of the Epicenter family. We love being surrounded by like-minded entrepreneurs who together create a unique gathering space for the Gilbert community.” It was basically love at first sight when they saw Agritopia, they knew they wanted to be a part of the community. “The intentionality, people, and sense of place drew us in. As we considered our next steps as a business, both Gilbert and Epicenter became the perfect home for us. We knew we wanted to plant seeds here, and we can’t wait to watch them grow.” They sell products designed and created by many local artists, makers, and creatives. The hope is to see customers come to love the locally produced products and also see their own businesses grow. “It’s great to know that as our business thrives, so do many other local small businesses. While we have our own branded products, we wouldn’t be able to exist without an ecosystem of creatives that share their perspectives of a particular place and the world.” Why I Love Where I Live is located at Epicenter at Agritopia at 3150 E. Mom Creates Family Fun Community KIDIZONA IS A ONE STOP SHOP FOR ALL THINGS FAMILY

Loving where you live and where you work is what many of us strive for daily. For local resident Lindsay Valerio, her love for all things family and being a mom led her to create a community for like-minded folks. Valerio is a mom of two and a former Marketing Director, who turned her creation into reality, creating Kidizona. “When I had my first child, I felt like I was searching Google and Yelp for hours on end looking for activities for us to do together. I craved a website where I could one stop shop for all kids’ activities and the idea for kidizona. com was born,” shares Valerio. “I started posting on socials around the time I started building the first website and it has grown ever since.” The kidizona community consists of local caregivers in & around Phoenix looking for things to do with kids. It brings together people from all over the valley and gives them an opportunity to find stuff to do with their kids and families. “I built the website so that families in the community could have an easy and convenient way to find fun parks and local activities."

Valerio also likes to collaborate with other local businesses and entrepreneurs such as Diana Ochoa who has an Instagram page called Littles and Lattes, where she also shares local events, family friendly fun, restaurants, and local coffee shops. She is also a mom of two and when she became a first-time mom, she began to follow pages such as kidizona, and ended up meeting Valerio. “Lindsay actually encouraged me to start my own page after we met and started talking, and long story short, I was encouraged to go for it and start my own page. Here we are a year later, and I feel very grateful to be a part of this community,” shares Ochoa. In the spirit of collaboration, Valerio is also excited to share that she and Kidizona have recently teamed up with State Forty Eight for a special offering. This collaboration is called the Explorer Pass, and it helps showcase cool spots in and around Gilbert. Folks can participate by purchasing a kidizona t-shirt at the State Forty Eight location in Downtown Gilbert. With every shirt purchased, people receive a pass that grants discounts to local play places, coffee shops, and more. Uses are unlimited until the expiration date. Valerio says she was shocked and humbled by the collaboration at first. “It's funny, when State Forty Eight approached me about creating the shirt, I thought it was by mistake, it was definitely a "who me?" reaction. When they told me what they had in mind, I thought it was the perfect collaboration. Together we are now helping local families save money on everyday activities! And the shirt is pretty cool too.” Kidizona is available for all locals and all you need to do to get involved is follow them on social media and online. “The website is a great spot to browse fun spots by location or activity type,” says Valerio. “I also love working with local, kid-focused businesses to promote their

The fact that I can help in a small way just by sharing our experiences at some places or reminding people of cool events coming up, deals, or freebies, is such a good feeling.” At the end of the day, Valerio simply wants to bring her community together, helping people to find ways to enjoy the valley. “All parents and caregivers who want ideas, inspiration, and helpful hints, are the audience for kidizona. My passion is seeing kids having fun with the people in their lives that love them.

offee lovers are always seeking the next best spot to score a good cup of joe. One local couple has made it their goal to provide that to the people who simply love coffee. Ana Herrera-Perez and Saul Perez own and operate Casita Coffee, which is a specialty Latin inspired coffee house on wheels. The couple, who are the parents to two little boys, are Gilbert residents and this is their way of showcasing love for the community where they live. “We both were working our corporate careers when we started this business,”

shares Ana. “We love spending time as a family, traveling, exploring, and supporting the local community.” Casita Coffee is the incorporation of modern drinks with a touch of Latin inspired flavors. “At Casita we love to share our creativity by carefully curating unique and trendy drinks,” says Ana. “One thing that sets Casita apart is being able to craft our own syrups or making our own beverage from scratch, such as Horchata latte, Café de Olla, Blue Churro, Spanish latte, etc. Our goal is to continue providing specialty coffee while still sharing known flavors from our culture without an insane amount of sugar.”

For the couple, Casita is more than just coffee, but also a place where they aim to bring community together, inspire others who dream of opening their own business and a place where they can meet with loved ones. It basically brings together their love of coffee and community. “We love coffee and we have always enjoyed supporting local coffee shops. The ambiance and the connection it brings to people,” says Ana. “Coffee is the bridge to the community.” For Ana and Saul, it was pretty natural to turn their love of coffee into a reality of a business venture. They often spent their time visiting local

coffee shops and sipping coffee, all while having great conversations with one another and with friends and family. “We believe coffee is more than just coffee, it is community, unity, and connection,” shares Ana. “Coffee brings people together. During travel, you can always find us visiting a local coffee shop. We truly enjoy conversing with our customers and being part of people’s morning routine.” One of the benefits of running and owning Casita Coffee is that the couple gets to spend more time as a family while doing something that they love. While the hours can be

odd sometimes because Casita is open on the weekends, Ana says they love the flexibility it allows them to enjoy family time. “We love that we can come up with ideas together for the business or on new drinks we are thinking of releasing. We love that we can be home and suddenly communicate an idea we have for a drink or for the business.” When it comes to working with your spouse, Ana has this advice. “First, set boundaries. Make sure that you communicate and discuss boundaries that you will set when operating a business together.” She also suggests having strong communication skills, dividing

tasks and workload, and balancing your life, making sure to separate business from personal life. They are at the Gilbert Farmer’s Market every Saturday, in downtown Gilbert every Sunday, the Gilbert Public School District office usually once a week and the surrounding area on weekdays. There’s also a third room with toys, books and six built in bunks perfect for big families with young children. The spacious great room includes a cozy fireplace to warm up in the winter, a large flat screen TV for added entertainment, cathedral style windows to take in the awe-inspiring views and a dining area for 10 or more people. The primary en-suite bathroom includes a two-person bathtub with jets and a walk in shower. The kitchen is stocked with all of the necessary appliances and has an island with seating as well as a pantry. Diana, her husband and her kids enjoyed the garage game room with ping pong, football and arcade basketball. There’s also a washer and dryer that’s free to use, which is great for extended stays. This gorgeous mountain oasis is the perfect place to spend quality time with one another both inside and outside.

Because the cabin is tucked into the trees and surrounded by vacant lots on all sides, it’s the perfect location for a private retreat. There are front and back porches with a charcoal grill, lounge furniture, outdoor games and amazing views of the sprawling Ponderosa pines. While there is an abundance of activities and opportunities for relaxation at this luxe family cabin, Show Low and surrounding areas have so many adventures to offer for those looking to explore. The city is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, providing numerous opportunities for hiking, camping, and fishing in the scenic surroundings. The cabin is five minutes from a lake so outdoorsy types can bring their kayaks and paddle boards when the weather permits. This is perfect if you have kids as they can explore. I believe that there are five main categories of intimacy in any type of romantic relationship that require time, attention, and energy from each partner: Physical Intimacy: cuddling, hand holding, nurturing touch, caressing, etc. Emotional Intimacy: empathy, respect, validation, communication, trust, vulnerability. etc. Intellectual Intimacy: deep conversations, mental stimulation, introspection, creativity, curiosity, etc. Experiential Intimacy: trying new things, shared experiences, adventures, spontaneity, etc. Spiritual Intimacy: prayer, meditation, values, morals & ethics, faith, exploring inner worlds, etc. In order to foster or regain the connection that is crucial for healthy intimacy, couples must start by putting more efforts into quality connection. This means carving out daily time for brief check-ins and closeness (even ten minutes makes a difference), weekly time for longer check-ins and deeper conversations (at least a couple hours), as well as: 1. Finding ways to make each other a priority, including date nights and quality time. 2. Using communication skills that help your partner(s) feel seen, heard, and validated. 3. Expressing gratitude, praise, and compliments to each other daily. 4. Surprising each other with thoughtful gestures, such as small gifts and acts of service. 5. Two forks, one bowl – a recipe for love on a pasta-filled date night at home If you like to cook together, try this go-to pasta recipe perfect for a Valentine's Day in. Or for a no-hassle dinner, order out and serve your favorite takeout in the comfort of your own home - just amp up your tablescape to make the night special. For a romantic ambiance, add candle sticks, a bottle of wine and Billie Holiday playing in the background.

Capelli d’Angelo alla Nanni Ingredients: • 8 oz. Barilla Capellini • 2 tsp. salted butter • 4 oz. prosciutto ham • 4 mushrooms, sliced thin • 12 oz. Jasper's Marinara Sauce • 4 oz. heavy cream • 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes • 4 oz. Romano cheese

Method: Cook pasta al dente according to package directions. Melt 2 tsp. butter in a saute’ pan over medium high heat. Add prosciutto and let it crisp, then add sliced mushrooms. Saute for 2 minutes. Stir in marinara sauce and cream, red pepper flakes, peas and Romano cheese. Bring to a light boil. Add cooked pasta and toss. Serve immediately. Be careful to cook the pasta al dente as it can become soggy very quickly and soak up all of the sauce.
