Home. So much is contained in that little four-letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable. Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They say they hold onto it for months as coffee table art or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource that is valued in our community and strive every month to deliver a few stories that make you smile. Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” As we thought about home - we wanted to highlight what makes it special to our readers. That of course includes the food and drink, the aesthetic and design, but most importantly - the people. This month, we were honored to speak with the legendary performer Kenny Loggins as he heads to the East Valley for his final tour. His music could literally be the score of my life from dancing wildly to “Footloose” to listening to ‘Rainbow Connection” as we set up our first child’s nursery, and currently as our adult children are introduced to “Top Gun”. Kenny Loggins’ music has been so much a part of our lives, we would consider that being home. Each month, we feel like the lucky ones as we get to learn more about the businesses and individuals that comprise Gilbert and hope the small lens into their lives and work brings people in this community together. As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you - in your town, neighborhood and most all of - your home. Thank you for letting us be a part of your home. Happy March!

Set the Bar 22
H AP PY H OU R | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
Ever ything you need to know to create a breathtaking in-home bar
Having a home bar is cool. It is, however, not cool if the only thing you can offer guests is a couple of dusty bottles of liquor that have been there for years. What you have in your home bar can make or break your gathering, however informal it may be. A well-rounded bar should include at least one bottle of each of the six base liquors, which are the foundation for the majority of cocktails. Stocking a nice selection of these will ensure you can mix up almost any cocktail on a whim. If you feel like a whiskey cocktail tonight, you’ll be ready. When a guest asks for a brandy, gin, rum or tequila-based libation, you’ll be prepared to grab your shaker and mix up a drink.
VODK A Vodka has a clean, transparent flavor and is used for more cocktails than any other distilled spirit. Stock at least one “fifth” bottle of vodka, but opt for a handle (1.75 liters) if you like to entertain. • A good solid option like Titos is ideal for tall drinks like the screwdriver and bloody mary. • If you enjoy a vodka martini, spend a little extra for a top-shelf bottle as well. • Consider stocking a couple of flavored vodkas. In a traditional bar, citrus and vanilla vodkas are the trusted standbys. suggested glassware: CONTINUED > MAR CH 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / G I L BE RT
23
WHISKEY
RUM
A well-stocked bar has at least two bottles of rum. • A light rum will be your workhorse for most cocktails, from the tropical daiquiri to the timeless mojito. • As a secondary rum, take your pick of aged, dark or spiced rum. suggested glassware:
GIN
Gin can be quite floral and botanical depending on the brand, since it is made from very botanicalforward juniper berries. • If you aren’t an aficionado, a good bottle of a London dry gin is recommended. This is the most versatile and can work in everything from a gin and tonic to a dry martini. • From there, you can get adventurous - every brand is different and a wide array of flavors is available. suggested glassware:
TEQUIL A Tequila’s quality can vary drastically, so make sure to test them out before purchasing. It’s the key to the ever-loved margarita, though there are other fascinating tequila cocktails to explore as well. Generally, you’ll want to stock at least one nice tequila. • The most versatile style is blanco (or silver) tequila, and it’s the best option for a one-tequila bar. • For a little upgrade, add a slightly aged reposado as well. suggested glassware:
24
H AP PY H OU R | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
This is where things get complicated. Each whiskey has its own style and characteristics. In general, two bottles are a good start - but you can always add more. • For the most versatility, stock a bourbon and Canadian whisky. The bourbon will give you that robust whiskey flavor and the Canadian blends tend to be very smooth. • Rye whiskey is a great choice for everyday mixed drinks. Though some drinkers find it too spicy, rye is excellent in almost any cocktail that calls for a generic whiskey. If you enjoy classic cocktails, give rye a try for an authentic taste. • A bottle of Irish whiskey and a decent blended scotch are good complements to any bar. While they make excellent cocktails, they’re not as common or as versatile as the other styles. suggested glassware:
WHERE TO STOCK YOU R BA R : While building out your bar selections can be fun, we hope your will also consider adding some local flavor to the mix. There are a handful of award-winning distilleries around the valley including one right here in Gilbert. Many of these distilleries offer tours that include a tasting and

LIQUEUR S
Liqueurs are often used as flavoring agents that define a cocktail. On occasion, they are the only distilled spirits in a drink. Liqueurs come in every flavor you could want and a bottle can last quite a long time. Start with the basics and gradually add to your stock as you see fit. Amaretto: The almond-flavored liqueur is used in both fancy and casual cocktails. • Coffee Liqueur: White Russians and countless other cocktails rely on a bottle like Kahlúa. • Dry and Sweet Vermouth: Technically, these are fortified wines, but they’re essential for martinis. • Irish Cream Liqueur: Baileys is a popular brand, though there are others worth checking out. You can also stock another cream liqueur, such as RumChata instead. • Orange Liqueur: Used in countless cocktails, this one’s invaluable. Options include curaçao, triple sec, Cointreau, and Grand Marnier. suggested glassware:

ESSENTIA L N ON-A L C OHOL IC M I X E R S Mixers are non-alcoholic liquids that add flavor and volume to cocktails. The majority of these are likely already in your kitchen and easily found at almost any store. Many mixers will keep in your bar for a long period of time. Check their freshness periodically and pay attention to expiration dates.
ESSENTI A L J UICES AND MIXERS Juice is easy: pick up a bottle or two during your next trip to the store. Of course, it’s best to use fresh juice whenever possible. However, for everyday drinking, those bottles of ready-to-pour juices are very convenient. Lemon and lime are good ones to have on hand, while orange and cranberry and grapefruit juice will be less-frequent depending on your taste. Bitters, Simple syrup, sour mix and grenadine are among some key elements for many cocktails. To download a full list, scan the QR code below.
CON V E R SAT ION + CONNECTION This utterly breathtaking in-home bar could be a speakeasy - except it’s not - it’s in the home of an entrepreneurial couple in Leawood Kansas. When planning this space, they took inspiration from travels and places they had stayed and loved while navigating every detail. What was most important to them was providing a space where people could connect and have conversation. The lighting, the seating and ambiance were all key for the family in creating an intimate moment for friends to connect.

With a career that spans more than 40 years, he’s ready to have more time at home and is on his final trek across the country on the “This Is It” farewell tour. Lucky for local fans, he will be stopping in the East Valley at the Shea Homes Good Life Festival Presented by Subaru on Sunday, March 26 at Schnepf Farms in Queen Creek. “I’ve been on the road on and off since 1971; it’s time to settle down and enjoy being a grandpa, have time at home, and when I travel, do it for pleasure and not work,” Loggins says. “I’m fortunate to have had such a long touring career. I don’t see this as the end of my professional career, but certainly a halt to the grind of major touring.” The Shea Homes Good Life Festival is returning for its twelfth year the weekend of March 25-26. While Loggins will take to the stage as the headlining act on Sunday, March 26, legendary rock band Kansas, creators of classic hits “Carry On Wayward Son” and “Dust In the Wind,” will be in the main spotlight on Saturday, March 25. The Good Life Festival is known as a unique destination experience of national musical acts, gourmet food, fine wine, craft beer and artisan retailers. Taking place at nearby Schnepf Farms, the festival draws an average of 5,000 people each year from across the Valley. When it’s his turn to take the stage at the festival, Loggins will trace his remarkable musical history with a brand-new, career-spanning stage show sure to thrill his loyal legion of fans. “This tour isn’t the end of my career, I’ll still be working on special projects; I’m just getting off the hamster wheel of touring,” Loggins says. “The performance will be over 90 minutes, featuring a lot of my top hits and some deeper cuts—some music that really matters to me.” “Live shows like this one are always fun—it doesn’t matter how many people are in the audience, what matters is the energy and how we connect,” he continues. “That connection is my favorite thing about live shows.” Not only does Loggins view the upcoming performance as a chance to connect with local fans, but he sees it as an opportunity to say thank you for their support during his impressive career. “This concert, and this whole tour, is exciting to me because it’s an opportunity to express my appreciation one last time,” he says. When Valley fans come to see Loggins on March 26, they will likely span the generations as his music appeals to everyone from those who first listened to his tunes in the 1970s to young ones familiar with his children’s albums. Loggins is also known as the “King of Movie Soundtracks,” with hits such as “Danger Zone,” “This Is It,” “I’m Alright” and “Footloose.” The rock star has even reached children and family audiences with numerous hit songs such as “The Great Adventure,” featured as the theme song for San Diego Zoo Kids television network. Additionally, Loggins’ album “Return to Pooh Corner” has remained the best-selling children’s album for over twenty years. He has also been nominated for an Oscar and is a two-time Grammy Award winner. “The Grammy Award that is special to me is when I won it for ‘This Is It,’” Loggins recalls. “The song was inspired by my father—he was in the hospital at the time and was struggling. It’s about how you must make decisions and it’s often your attitude and choices that determine how things go.” Despite such an impressive career, Loggins remains humble and thankful for his fans. “I’m lucky, I’m not sure why my music has survived the test of time,” he says. “Maybe it’s because I’ve written a lot of songs about things that matter in life. Like the songs for movies—those last forever. Perhaps my songs are soundtracks for different times in my fans’ lives. I’m excited to do this tour and perform in Arizona for my fans.”

Home Design Trends 2023 ARTICLE BY TRI POINTE HOMES DESIGN STUDIO
Tri Pointe Homes’ Design Experts Share the Hottest Tips and Trends in New Home Design
PHOTOGRAPHY BY TRI POINTE HOMES
Tri Pointe Homes is an award-winning home builder serving the Phoenix market for more than 35 years. City Lifestyle tapped into the professional consultants at its new South Scottsdale Design Studio to unveil the hottest trends in interior design today, helping you navigate the impressive array of styles and options to personalize your home.
SOPHISTICATED FIXTURES
Fixtures are the jewelry of the house. For a luxe look that complements 2023’s trending colors, try bronze or champagne cabinet hardware and plumbing fixtures. This adds extra dazzle to functional elements of the home that often get overlooked.
WARM IT UP
White and grey had their day, but warmer hues are taking center stage now. Colors like rust, brown, amber, and ivory help infuse your space with a soft, cozy, and minimalistic vibe.

BLACK ACCENTS
Touches of black gives your home’s design a bold statement while still blending in with virtually any color palette. Find moments to use black for added dimension and style, whether it’s as a plumbing accent or an accessory or rug.
TEXTURIZE
Give your home visual appeal by incorporating texture with furniture, wallpaper, backsplashes, statement walls and more. To avoid going overboard, Tri Pointe Homes recommends starting with a neutral palette first, then thoughtfully layering in your textural elements.
WALK-IN SHOWERS
Transform your bathroom into an oasis with a walk-in shower. Bigger is better in this case, because larger walk-in showers can fit multiple shower heads and offer more opportunity for stunning tile work. Don’t forget to include a drying platform. CONTINUED >

CABINETS, FLOORING, AND TILE
These are the top three options new homeowners invest in and Tri Pointe Homes’ design consultants bring the wow factor with a wide variety of carefully curated styles and finishes. The array of selections is all customized à la carte, giving homebuyers a multidimensional experience to personalize their new homes.
OUTDOOR PERSONALITY The space outside your home is important to your well-being, and more popular than ever. Outdoor living should reflect your lifestyle and helps dictate your design. This year, expect to see a rise in modern outdoor kitchens, pre-wired electrical for TVs and fans, and elements that balance the home’s interior with its natural environment, including large glass doors and versatile flooring options that seamlessly connect the inside to the outside.
FLEX SPACES
Owning a home empowers you to make every square inch work smarter and harder. Flex spaces can take many forms but designing them starts with intent. Consider function, freedom, future, and fun into your planning — what Tri Pointe Homes’ calls the “Four F’s” of flex spaces. The multi-functional areas currently trending include home offices and home gyms, but the beauty of these adaptable spaces is that they can evolve as you evolve.

If you find yourself needing a lot of reassurance in your relationships or if you are extremely dismissive of relationships, you may have underlying attachment wounds that need to be addressed. By identifying your attachment style, you can move toward security while building vulnerability and trust in your relationships. Your attachment style is formed during childhood as a result of whether or not your primary caregivers could reliably meet your needs. This attachment style later shows itself in intimate relationships, especially romantic partnerships, as how safe you feel in the relationship. People with an anxious attachment style model high anxiety and low avoidance in relationships. While they strongly seek intimacy, their doubt and fear of abandonment often lead them to be extremely dependent on their partners, even sometimes described as “clingy”. On the other end of the spectrum are those with an avoidant attachment style. The avoidantly attached person has low anxiety and high avoidance in their relationships. As a result, they can often adopt a “lone wolf” persona, causing them to be emotionally distant and even hyper-independent. The third attachment style is called the disorganized attachment style. People who fall in this category tend to engage in “push-pull” relationships with both high anxiety and high avoidance. While they deeply crave intimacy and attachment, they go back and forth with themselves about their needs because intimacy and attachment are also what they fear the most. Lastly, people who have a secure attachment style tend to have the most healthy relationships. People who are securely attached exhibit low anxiety as well as low avoidance. They don’t deeply fear intimacy or abandonment. Instead, they are able to function in an interdependent relationship and feel safe with their partners. Which attachment style do you identify with? DIY Adirondack Chairs THE PERFECT SPRING PROJECT TO GET READY FOR POOL SEASON
1.
2. 4.
3.
As I dream about warmer swimming pool temps and summer nights, I knew I needed a few more chairs to set out in the garden. These Adirondack Chairs are an easy project, and with just a few tools and wood from Home Depot, this is a project you can do in just a few hours. There are only a handful of things you will need to complete this project: a miter saw, drill and a kreg jig which you can all find at Home Depot, as well a few things you most likely have in your home workshop, which includes a tape measure and safety glasses.
