CHECKLIST CHOOSE YOUR THEME Theme is a very important aspect of the party. It can set the mood and tone for the event. There are many different themes that can be chosen, depending on what you want your party to represent. THEME PARTY IDEAS: • Gangster • Retro 80’s or 90’s • Star Wars • Gotham City
• Carnival • Medieval • Bohemian Nights • Old Hollywood
INCORPORATE LIGHTING INTO THE THEME One of the best ways to tie in your decorations with the theme is by linking your lighting. Choosing your event lighting to reflect the mood of the evening, For Example, Black & Gold for a Superhero theme. OUTDOOR LIGHTING Since it gets dark so much earlier in late winter, you will likely need extra lighting in your outdoor entertaining areas. This is the perfect excuse to hang extra string lights bordering your patio, crossing from your house to your gazebo. Permanent Fairy lights placed around your outdoor space is a great way to add a subtle glow and increase your outdoor entertaining space. WARMTH IS KEY Even if you live in a warmer climate the winter months can get a bit chilly. Keeping your guests comfortable is important for everyone to enjoy an outdoor holiday party. Renting portable heaters is the pro-tip for extending your time outdoors. FOCUS ON FIRE FEATURES Patio and fire pits provide a warm, welcoming ambience for a social gathering and can make a party in oh-so-sunny Arizona feel a bit more like a winter soiree. Arrange seating around your fire pit or face your patio furniture towards your fireplace to encourage your guests to get cozy. Make roasting hot dogs or marshmallows part of the fun to give your guests and excuse to gather around the fire.

It's a New Year, baby!
January 2023 PUBLISHER
Robin Belley | robin.belley@citylifestyle.com SALES DIR ECTOR
Kristy Belley | kristy.belley@citylifestyle.com
For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons, and new goals to pursue. It is also a time when we can look back at the year that was to consider all that we had hoped to accomplish and – let’s be honest – somehow not gotten around to or was lost in the noise that was 2022. I must admit, it was hard to focus this last year. If it wasn’t long-term COVID, it was a war nobody wanted, supply chain nightmares making everything complicated or prices of everyday items going through the roof. It was rough, but we made it through, one step at a time. I guess, when it comes to anything in life: business, finance, food, home, and personal health, it’s not what you do some days that moves the needle - it’s what you do most days. So instead of resolutions this year, let’s make commitments. Let’s commit to take these little steps, one at a time, and let’s keep moving forward for ourselves, our families, and our community. Our commitment to you is not to provide quick fixes to check those resolution boxes in the short term, but to value what is sustainable over the long haul. We will reach out to business, finance, food, home, and personal health experts in our community to provide you with inspiring examples for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. Happy 2023! May it bring you peace, prosperity, and happiness! R O B I N & K R I S T Y B E L L E Y, P U B L I S H E R S @GILBERTCIT YLIFEST YLE

MACDONALD ORTHO’S SMILES IN THE SPOTLIGHT We arrived to the U.S in 2013 as refugees, we settled down in Gilbert. It was a wonderful place, especially the Elementary School called Sonoma Ranch Elementary. We were looking for the best orthodontist and everyone said go do Macdonald Ortho. Here we started our amazing journey full of smiles! Dr. Robert and Dr. Keith are masterminds when it comes to oral treatment, as they took great care of all three of my kids and left them with nice, bright smiles! Not to mention the ice cream helped make those smiles much brighter! My first child, Zahraa, She is the quiet princess and most bashful of the three, she loves to swim and sing in her free time! Now she is in her Freshman year with ASUPD. Her treatment started as a complicated case and now she has a beautiful smile! My second child, Ahmed, Mr. Comedy, he is the most social of the bunch! He can talk to anybody about any subject! He always makes the front ladies laugh while they do their work!He and his sisters love helping his mom, the Masterchef, bake Baklava! He is also in Freshman year at ASUPD! Last but not least, we have a little princess named Rafal! Rafal is an artist that specializes in all types of art, but she loves painting! She loves to swim and helps her Mom make their favorite Quinoa Salad! She is a 7th Grader at ASUPD. We have a fluffy bonus kitty, and his name is Bingo! He might be the fourth patient at MacDonalds!

ARTICLE BY KRISTY BELLEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS FRAILEY
People say that laughter is the best medicine. Laughter strengthens your immune system, boosts mood, diminishes pain, and protects you from the damaging effects of stress. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. While Jim Perry, the owner of JP’s Comedy Club, is not a doctor he can provide you with a good dose of laughter. A retired police officer, Jim, a self-proclaimed “TALKER” shared a little about himself, and his foray into comedy. During his police career, one of Jim’s roles was the director of the local D.A.R. E. program working with kids. This is where he discovered his passion for teaching and laughing. CONTINUED >

We love supporting the community. We host lots of local events for groups and give 100% of the ticket sales back to the charity.
After a work-related injury, Jim along with his wife, Janelle decided to take a leap of faith and move from Chicago to Gilbert, Arizona. “I love Gilbert, we have raised our kids here. We moved our family here from the Chicago area in 2004. It’s such a family-oriented community. We live in a great neighborhood and are involved in our church. I was a volunteer youth Pastor for a while at Rock Point when my sons were younger”
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN COMEDY? I own a security business which I started in 2011, JPG Security. I grew that business with the help of great employees so that it was pretty much running itself. I was getting a little bored and found myself spending way too much time watching Netflix comedians, one day an ad popped up for a comedy class in Scottsdale. I decided what the heck, I’ll give it a try. I found out that I was sort of a natural. I found out that it came so easy for me to write jokes, it came so easy for me to perform, and I was pretty good at it. I just got addicted and started doing comedy shows everywhere.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO OPEN YOUR CLUB IN GILBERT? I was spending too much time on the road. Actually, too much time away from my family. I thought, well what if I just establish my own club residency? I know a lot of comedians. I know the guys in California. I thought I could start booking them to come to Gilbert and I would have to ability to perform a little each night.
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT THE CLUB? We love supporting the community. We host lots of local events for groups and give 100% of the ticket sales back to the charity. We just ask that they buy a couple of drinks, or snacks while they enjoy the show.

YOU MENTIONED YOU HAD A PASSION FOR TEACHING, DO YOU OFFER ANY CLASSES IN COMEDY FOR PEOPLE THAT MIGHT WANT TO GIVE IT A TRY? We call ourselves a Comedy Club and a Comedy School. We teach classes weekly. Monday and Tuesday. We rent the rooms on Wednesday and Sunday. Thursdays at 7:00 PM is our open mic night for local comedians. At every national touring show, we have a local comedian open the show. We want to be sure to support our local comedians.
WHAT IS YOUR SECRET SAUCE? We are a small family-owned and operated business that is fully supported by our local community. We want anyone and everyone to be able to come so we give away a lot of FREE tickets, and at any time you can go online and use the code comedy75, you can get 75% off tickets, or if times are tough – just text us and will give you free tickets, we just ask that you buy two concessions. You can actually come and spend $6.00 for two waters and enjoy and night out at a comedy club.
HOW WOULD YOU CLASSIFY YOUR COMEDY STYLE? I personally do adult comedy. However, I do also do clean comedy. I do tons of comedy shows at churches. I do a lot of work with the American Legion.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE COMEDIAN LIVING OR DECEASED? That’s Easy, George Carlin!
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CURRENTLY PERFORMING COMEDIAN? I love people that are good joke writers, like Jim Gaffigan. I am also a big fan of Mark Normand.
WHO ARE SOME THE BEST LOCAL COMEDIANS PEOPLE SHOULD MAKE A PRIORITY TO SEE? Michael Longfellow, who has now been cast for Saturday Night Live
T-Dot, who is one of the funniest guys in Arizona, and Manny Hernandez, he has been doing comedy for a long, long time
IF YOU COULD ONLY TAKE ONE COMEDY MOVIE WITH YOU ON A DESERT ISLAND, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO GRAB? The Blues Brothers
THE ONE THING YOU ARE THE PROUDEST OF? MY BOYS! Nathan & Brenden. I am a proud dad. I believe in priorities. My priority list is God first, then family, which includes my wife, my kids, my parents, and my friends… then business, and fun So Gilbert, if you feel like you need a laughter booster, head out to see Jim and the other local comedians at JP’s on Warner & Lindsay - JP’s Comedy Club 860 E Warner Road Gilbert jpscomedyclub.com

When it comes to picking vegetables, color is an important factor to consider. Not only do colorful vegetables provide a visually appealing dish, but they also provide a range of health benefits. Here are some tips for selecting colorful and healthy vegetables: Choose a variety of colors: The different colors of vegetables are a result of the different types of nutrients they contain. For example, red vegetables are often high in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that can help protect against heart disease and cancer. Green vegetables, on the other hand, are high in lutein and zeaxanthin, which are important for maintaining good vision. Look for vibrant colors: When selecting vegetables, choose ones that have vibrant, deep
colors. Dull or pale-colored vegetables may be past their prime and may not provide the same nutritional benefits as fresher, more vibrant-colored vegetables. Avoid bruised or damaged vegetables: In addition to looking for vibrant colors, also avoid selecting vegetables that are bruised or damaged. These vegetables may be more prone to spoilage and may not provide the same nutritional benefits as undamaged vegetables. Choose organic when possible: While organic vegetables can be more expensive, they may provide additional health benefits. Organic vegetables are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, which can be harmful to your health and the environment. CONTINUED >

When choosing your vegetables, why not head out to the farmer's market? Shopping local will help your local economy, your budget, and your diet. Local ingredients grown locally absorb local nutrients from the same environment you already live in. By following these tips, you can make the most of your shopping experience at the market and support your local farmers: Plan ahead: Before you head to the farmer's market, make a list of the items you want to buy. This will help you stay focused and avoid impulse purchases. Go early: The best time to go to the farmer's market is early in the morning, when the produce is at its freshest. Many farmer's markets also have a limited selection of items, so going early can ensure that you have a wider variety of produce to choose from.
SELECTING COLORFUL AND HEALTHY VEGETABLES IS AN IMPORTANT STEP IN MAINTAINING A BALANCED AND NUTRITIOUS DIET 26
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
Shop the perimeter: The perimeter of the farmer's market is typically where you'll find the freshest produce. This is where the farmers set up their stands and sell their products directly to consumers. Ask questions: Don't be afraid to ask the farmers questions about their produce. They can provide valuable information about how the produce was grown, how to store it, and how to prepare it. Bring cash: Many farmer's markets do not accept credit or debit cards, so it's best to bring cash with you. This will also help you stick to your budget and avoid overspending. In conclusion, selecting colorful and healthy vegetables is an important step in maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet. By choosing a variety of colors, looking for vibrant colors, avoiding bruised or damaged vegetables, and choosing organic, when possible, you can ensure that you are getting the most health benefits from your vegetables.

A NCIENT WISDOM
Integrative treatments such as acupuncture are finally being recognized and accepted by the traditional medical world
The evidence is mounting that ancient treatments such as acupuncture, cupping and energy healing have a direct impact on optimal health. Kirby Woods, Owner of Qing Dao Wellness, answers our questions about these modernized ancient treatments.
What is the biggest misconception about Eastern medicine? The World Health Association has designated many pain conditions that acupuncture is a good treatment for, so many believe pain is the only condition acupuncture can help with. The truth is, Chinese Medicine is a complete medical system that has been treating many ailments for well over 1,000 years.
Can explain cupping, and what that does for you? We create a suction within a container and attach the container to the body. The suction draws tissues into the center of the cup while creating compression on the rim of the cup. This difference in pressures encourages "toxins" to migrate into more superficial tissues, where they can be drawn away and disposed of.
What types of things will acupuncture help with? Some things I have seen in private practice include overcoming anxiety, acute injuries, labor induction, improving sleep, reducing Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, relieving cough, reducing stress, and encouraging wound healing.
What is energy healing? Simply put, energy healing is using our understanding of interconnectedness to affect a certain condition or concern. The ancients believed that one can focus their intent on a situation, condition, or location and bring about a change that can be measured

Pure Pura Vida 3 bucket-list worthy destinations to visit in Costa Rica ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY NADINE BUBECK Although many people use the saying ‘pura vida’, until you’ve been to Costa Rica, you will not truly know what ‘pura vida’ feels like. It’s an emotion, it’s an attitude, and it’s a way of life. Here are three swoon-worthy destinations to check off your Costa Rica bucket list. Arenas Del Mar in Manuel Antonio is a National Park located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. It’s one of the top National Parks in the world due to its robust nature and wildlife. Upon arrival at Arenas Del Mar, the only luxury resort in Manuel Antonio directly on the beach, we realized we were embarking on an experience you only dream of… and now that we’re home, one I can only revisit in my dreams.
The Cayuga Collection property is rich in rainforest with a backdrop of secluded beaches. There are 37 stunning rooms and suites, many with balconies overlooking the trees, sand, and sea, along with an outdoor tub. Arenas Del Mar is paradise. There are two pools, restaurants, and endless areas of rest, relaxation, and exploration. Our first of many monkey encounters was in the open-aired lobby. Greeted with fresh coconut water, we immediately felt far away - both physically and emotionally. We woke to blue skies and often indulged in an afternoon rain dance. Our kids ran wild and free building forts CONTINUED >

from sticks on the beach. We spotted sloths and iguanas and hundreds of hermit crabs. And we swung in the property’s signature circular beach swing, wanting time to stop. Plus, the staff was superb. Besides indulging in on-property R&R, explore Manuel Antonio via a private yacht courtesy of Catch & Relax. Departing the nearby Quepos marina, you’ll get a unique perspective of Costa Rica’s infinite beauties. Tours are fully personalized and perfect for families. Endless drinks and a freshly cooked lunch are included, as well as cruising the Pacific and docking at a bay where the water becomes your playground. Paddle boards, floaties, snorkel gear and more are provided. Costa Rica is also known for thrill-rides through the rainforest, and El Santuario Canopy Adventure Tours will give you the ultimate rush. Fit for fearless families ages 4+, you’ll ride high through the jungle, zip lining on an array of courses - one being the longest zip-line in Costa Rica. Led by enthusiastic guides, this safe and exciting endeavor will leave you breathless. The Westin Reserva Conchal, Playa Conchal. Located in the province of Guanacoste, Playa Conchal flaunts a pristine coastline known for crushed shells that grace the shores accompanied by clear, turquoise water. It’s arguably the best swimming beach in the region. Sitting directly on the stunning stretch of beach is the ultimate family destination: The Westin Reserva Conchal, an all-inclusive Golf Resort & Spa. The Westin Reserva Conchal is set between exotic forests and unspoiled beaches. At
2,400 acres, the all-inclusive resort has all you need to thrive: spacious family suites, a large lagoon-style pool (with swim-up bar), tennis courts, championship golf, and more. Also included is the Westin® Kids Club, overseen by a fantastic staff. The kid-infused center offers awesome activities, gifting you an adult-only worry-free break from the kiddos. Plus, there’s an abundance of on-site activities including poolside games, daytime DJs, and nighttime karaoke. Delight your palate with a wealth of culinary choices - the breakfast buffet is delicious and infused with fresh, healthy juices. Lunch is all about ceviche - the chef even taught us how to make a batch! An array of restaurants are available for dinner; we loved Spirula, the Italian eatery, with table side entertainment (a magician!). In the mornings, we did family yoga on the beach and ended our days swimming at sunset. And if you’re craving sightseeing, book a private tour via Swiss Travel to Buena Vista Del Rincón, an eco-adventure park. There, you’ll zip-line; venture on hanging bridges; fulfill a need for speed via a waterslide; and indulge at a hot spring spa located in the heart of the rainforest. Four Seasons Resort at Peninsula Papagayo. The exclusive Papagayo Peninsula is among the most luxurious areas of Costa Rica, and the Four Seasons admittedly has the best location imaginably possible. Nothing short of spectacular, the Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica is a world-famous oasis with sweeping coastal views. Set amidst a monkey-filled tropical rainforest, the five-star property exceeds all expectations. CONTINUED >

WORKING WITH LITTLE MIR ACLES Meet Two of Phoenix Children's Hospital amazing pediatricians that call Gilbert home
In 2019, I was honored to attend the groundbreaking of what would become Phoenix Children's Pediatrics East Valley. Just 3 short years later, Phoenix Children’s Pediatrics has 11 primary care locations, seven of which are located in the East Valley. Pediatricians at these locations can collaborate with specialists throughout Phoenix Children’s health system while providing the highest quality of care to children and adolescents in their local community. Phoenix Children’s Pediatrics offers services for children and adolescents including wellness exams and health screenings, specialized services for prenatal and newborn babies, and treatment for illness and injury. I am excited to introduce you to two amazing pediatricians that not only work with our little miracles each day, but also call Gilbert home.

Priya Patel, MD – Phoenix Children’s Pediatrics – Gilbert As a pediatrician, Priya Patel, MD, builds trusting relationships with patients and families. She advocates for her patients and provides high-quality care. A desire to be close to family brought Dr. Patel to Phoenix Children's Pediatrics. However, what inspires her to stay is carrying out the organization's mission: “to provide hope, healing, and the best healthcare for children and families”.
DO YOU HAVE A WHY FOR YOUR CHOICE TO BECOME A PEDIATRICIAN? AND WHAT IS IT? I was inspired to become a doctor during a trip with my parents to India. I was shocked to see so many sick, underfed children who needed medical care but were not able to get it. At that moment, I realized that I wanted to be a part of the solution. Food, shelter, and proper care should be available to all. I believe that people like myself, who are fortunate enough to obtain an education and have resources, should strive to make the world better.
WHAT IS YOUR BEST TIP FOR KEEPING YOUR KIDS HEALTHY IN 2023? Encourage children to consume a variety of different foods, especially nutrient-dense foods. Core foods include vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy and protein. These foods help provide essential vitamins and minerals. This also helps prevent constipation and obesity, two very common issues that many children face.
WHAT IS ONE SURPRISING THING YOUR PATIENTS WOULD NOT GUESS ABOUT YOU? I love designing Indian clothing. I had a four-day Indian wedding and designed all my outfits for each event.

Meghan Hunter, DO – Phoenix Children’s Pediatrics 1501 Indiana native Meghan E. Hunter, DO, felt a sense of home when she joined Phoenix Children's Pediatrics. She appreciates being part of a supportive community where she can provide evidence-based, individualized patient care. “My goal is to provide my patients and their families the highest-quality care and serve as a role model for kids in the community”, Dr. Hunter says.
DO YOU HAVE A WHY FOR YOUR CHOICE TO BECOME A PEDIATRICIAN? AND WHAT IS IT? I honestly knew I wanted to be a pediatrician when I was 8 years old. I don’t really have a “moment” when I knew this is what I wanted to do. It’s like pediatrics has been a part of me for my whole life. I think I’ve always loved helping kids, and I’ve always liked science, so when I went to medical school, pediatrics was the obvious choice for me. Kids are just so fun and resilient. I love forming meaningful relationships with people and that is such an important part of being a pediatrician, so that was a big draw for me, as well.
WHAT IS YOUR BEST TIP FOR KEEPING YOUR KIDS HEALTHY IN 2023? Stay home if you are sick! It’s simple, but I can’t stress this enough.
DO YOU HAVE ANY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS? My biggest goal for 2023 is to be more present and to find joy in the little things. I’m not a huge New Year’s resolution person, but every year I decide on a word of the year. For 2023, my word of the year is “Joy.” To me, that means finding small things to be happy about every day, celebrating everyday things just for fun, and not taking things too seriously when they don’t have to be.

Move Well. Live Well
G E T T I N G TO K N O W C Y N D I GEORGE - GILBERT'S MOST AWA RDED MOV EMENT STUDIO OWNER AND MOVEMENT E XPERT
ARTICLE BY KRISTY BELLEY & CYNDI GEORGE PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTINE LOWELL
Cyndi George grew up in Indiana with a cheerleading, dance, and gymnastic background and graduated from IU with a BSc. in Physical Education and Adapted Physical Education and earned her MSc. In Physical Education and Administration running the Indiana University IUFIT program as part of her graduate assistantship. Her business and integrative movement studio has won several BEST of Gilbert, BEST of the BEST in the East Valley (Gilbert – Chandler- Mesa) and Best of Loving Life after 50 awards.
WHAT IS THE MISSION BEHIND CYNSHINE PILATES AND INTEGRATIVE MOVEMENT? To build a community where I can educate clients on how and why their bodies move and compensate and then teach them how to move with more efficiency, fluidity, and more importantly without pain.
WHY IS MOVEMENT IMPORTANT TO YOUR OVERALL HEALTH? Have you heard that “Motion is Lotion” for the body? Movement can dramatically improve anyone’s quality of life, especially for people living with chronic injuries or neurological diseases. Corrective and integrated exercises from your “eyes down to your toes”, will help regain your quality and fluidity of movement and improve your overall health. Movement helps lubricate and remove waste products from the 300 joints in your body with nutrient-rich fluid to maintain and improve range of motion and flexibility which in turn will decrease pain and discomfort. This synovial fluid requires guess what, Movement to keep the joints loose so it is also true that what you don’t use you lose, be it cognitive (remember your high school Spanish or French classes?) or physically and that includes balance, flexibility and strength

over time. Underutilized joints and muscles will atrophy and stiffen up. And we totally get it, when it hurts who wants to move - but the magic is in the movement and it doesn’t have to hurt. Flexibility and strength should feel good!
HOW CAN MOVEMENT HELP WITH RECOVERY FOR CHRONIC ILLNESS? The correct exercises based on your particular needs is what is paramount in recovery. It is definitely not a one size fits all approach. So, it isn’t about I’m going to the gym to jump on the elliptical or a group yoga or barbell or cross fit gym right out of the gate. Recovery for a chronic illness is multifaceted. You really should invest in someone who looks and treats the entire body, mind, spirit, and soul. Every BODY is different, Every CHRONIC ILLNESS OR DISORDER is different, Every BODY needs its own regimen that works for them, AND… more importantly, EVERY BODY is perfect. The key is finding someone who listens to your health history as details are so important and even listen to what wasn’t said or “omitted” and someone who watches and observes you move dynamically... This is often the key to keep you moving in the right direction. Every disorder or chronic illness comes with its own set of criteria. For example, I would not give my scoliosis client the same corrective movements that I would give my MS or stroke recovery clients. Find someone who is knowledgeable in corrective movement for chronic illness and neurological disorders and even include a team approach with physicians and other therapies. There should also be a progression to get you back into doing the activities perhaps with modifications that you used to enjoy! Don’t let age or condition dictate what you can or cannot do! Flexibility and strength should feel good!
WHAT OTHER TREATMENTS ARE AVAILABLE AT CYNSHINE? Cynshine and I have become known as the “Scar and Body Whisperer” in the East Valley. This expertise in the field of corrective movement, McLoughlin Scar Tissue Release® and Pilates is designed to assist people over 40 and those with chronic illness recovering from surgery and neurological disorders.
Recovery for a chronic illness is multifaceted. You really should invest in someone who looks and treats the entire body, mind, spirit, and soul.
WHAT IF YOU ARE NEW TO PILATES OR A LITTLE EMBARRASSED ABOUT YOUR MOVEMENT LIMITATIONS? Not to worry, we specialize in Private one-on-one sessions to work quietly at your own pace and comfort level. JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / G I L BE RT

Evolve Counseling & Behavioral Health Services Happy Holidays, Crazy Family!
How to cope during the holidays: With the holidays just around the corner, we often look forward to breaks, parties, and exchanging gifts. All this celebration often means more time with family, which includes some members that are difficult to be around - instigating conflict, making passive aggressive comments, or asking inappropriate questions.
So, how do you cope with these challenging relationships? Do you isolate yourself, try to confront every offense and irritation, or just smile and nod? Or maybe there’s a better way. We can use boundaries and self-care to find joy this holiday season despite how our family members behave. Know Your Boundaries To set a respectful boundary, we have to be able to identify the inappropriate behavior, express how we feel, and ask for a change. It might be as simple as a phrase like, “Uncle Jim, when you comment on my weight, I feel disrespected and uncomfortable. Please stop making those comments. I’d rather tell you all about my promotion.” Or, “Mom, it really upsets me when you criticize my parenting in front of my kids. It is important that they respect my decisions. Can you please be more aware of what you say in front of my children?” Keep Your Routines and Hobbies One of the great things about the holidays is the time off from our usual activities and routines - except that we all get more reactive when we are not sleeping, eating, exercising, or resting well! Be sure to set aside time in your day for yourself. Doing things like catching up on a favorite show, spending time alone or with friends, or engaging in a hobby can help us collect our thoughts, process our feelings, and self-soothe. You’d be surprised what a difference this can make! Author: Ema Grant, MS, LPC / IG: resilienthopecounseling Our Services Include:

Healthy Giving in the New Year
Create lasting benefits for Local Organization ARTICLE BY KEITH KLEIN Simple steps to help plan your charitable giving to create lasting benefits for organizations that are important to you:
1. IDENTIFY YOUR VALUES Determine your reason for giving and what you want to change. Since philanthropy is giving over time, determine how long you want to give and if you want it as part of your family’s legacy
2. DEFINE YOUR GOALS Each year, you’ll evaluate how much you intend to give and when. Depending on your circumstances, you may include a giving schedule, such as quarterly or a one-time contribution each year
3. SELECT YOUR CHARITIES To ensure a charity is legitimate, ask the charity for details about their mission and how they’ll use your donation. The charity should also provide proof that it’s a 501(c)(3) public charity or private foundation so that your contribution is tax-deductible.
4. UNDERSTAND HOW TO MAXIMIZE GIVING . As tax laws change, your financial plan and giving plan may need to be revised so that you receive the tax benefits of your gift
5. DETERMINE WHICH STRATEGIES TO USE There are strategies you can utilize to help you organize your giving within your financial plan
6. CONSIDER GIVING OTHER ASSETS There are other assets you can give to charity that are not associated with securities

Did you know… with thoughtful, advanced planning, you can extend your legacy of charitable giving beyond your lifetime, creating lasting benefits for the organizations you care about? And if you have a desire to give back to society (or a special cause) as part of your legacy, there are many ways you can do so. Besides feeling good about giving back, a bonus of giving is that when you include giving in your financial plan, you can make an impact while also receiving tax benefits. One type of giving is philanthropic giving, which addresses the root cause of social issues and requires a more strategic, long-term approach. Here are tips to help guide you as you work towards including philanthropic giving as part of your goals in your financial plan; I am available to help to guide your giving plan, feel free to reach out to me at www.tpwm.co
