Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax. Some of the best summers spent are often not filled with constant activities and trips, but are those that reflect a slower pace and simple moments of enjoying those around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” is not always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it is so refreshing to take some time to slow down and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhoods. Some of the best times spent going on a hike or an adventure with friends, exploring the outdoors and making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating ice cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. Living in Arizona can be challenging in the summertime. With daytime temperature in excess of 100 degrees from Memorial Day to Labor Day, we all have to find ways to stay out of the heat and cool down. Some of us, like Dr. Sandra Browning, like to spend time indoors tending to her plants. Others, like Jae Crowder, prefer to spend some time by the pool. If you are really courageous, you may have braved the heat and attended the Phoenix Fan Fusion convention this year or braved the desert like Liz, Shawn, Derek, Ascheley, and Reign. In any case, we hope you are able to enjoy some of the many things our city offers during these hot days of summer and that you make memories with those around you that you love.

You 'Grow' Girl Sandra Browning, DMD, grows alongside her plants and patients ARTICLE BY MICHELLE TALSMA EVERSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS FRAILEY
Sandra Browning, DMD, feels most at peace in two places: when connecting with her dental patients and while taking care of her impressive collection of plants. “I believe in making the world a better place and leaving people and things better than I found them,” she says. “I do that by helping people with their teeth and with my hands in the dirt.” While dentistry and plants may not seem like they have a lot in common, they are both Browning’s top passions. “Both teeth and plants, if you give them love and take care of them properly, they will reward you with ten times the love back,” she says. As a mom, it’s a
passion she’s passed down to her 5-year-old son, who has six plants of his own. An Arizona native, Browning was born in Yuma where her family members were cotton farmers and then moved to Flagstaff at age 3, where spending time in the forest was a regular occurrence. She began caring for her first plant at 14. “It’s a pothos plant, so basically your grandma’s house plant. They are very forgiving plants,” Browning says. “I adopted it from the living room and decided it would live in my bedroom. The rest is history.” Impressively, 26 years later, she still has the original CONTINUED >

plant and its offspring that have grown from its cuttings. With such staying power, the plant’s name is Jim. “Jim has seen me through dental school, motherhood, divorce, all of the things,” she explains. “Spending a big portion of my childhood in Flagstaff, nature has always been impressive to me, and an escape,” she continues. “I’ve always wanted to be close to nature and, through the plants in my home, I bring nature indoors.” Recently, Browning’s 9-year-old niece counted her plant collection at 86, although she estimates she has between 100-120 plants when everything is accounted for. Her collection features everything from basic house plants you can get in the garden section of any store to rare African succulents. For those who may think she has a secret green thumb, she notes that it’s all about trial and error and learning as you go. “I used to really overwater my plants,” she says. “But now, in this day and age of information at your fingertips, I look up information for each plant and tailor its care to what it needs.” Browning shares that trial and error— mixed with hard work and gratitude—are the themes for her life and career as well. Browning practices dentistry at Gilbert Dental Center, where she specializes in cosmetic and general dentistry. She takes special care to connect with her patients who may be scared or nervous to there because she knows what it’s like to struggle with her own dental issues. “I originally became a dental assistant to get a discount on dental work for my own bad teeth; it’s not that I didn’t take care of them, people don’t realize that genetics play a big role, too,” she explains. “As I moved in my career, I went into dental hygiene and then became

a dentist in my early 30s, so I didn’t take the traditional career track often expected of dentists. I’m grateful for every experience and struggle though because it helps me to connect with my patients on a personal level.” “My life has been anything but perfect, and many times when people sit in that dentistry chair they may be terrified to be there,” Browning continues. “I am here to reassure them that I will provide a safe place for them to be, and everything will be okay.” Looking toward the future, Browning plans to open her own practice next year and is moving into a new local home soon. Of course, in both places, she will have a variety of plants and will give them space to “grow their hearts out.”

From Beau Geste to Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, the Imperial Dunes Recreational area, located near Yuma, is considered an ideal destination for explorers, adventurers, filmmakers, and space aliens alike. It is no surprise then, that it also attracted a group of friends whose passion revolves around recreating their favorite movie and popular culture characters. This year, the two-day adventure focused on the recent Disney+ streaming series The Mandolorian and the 1999 summer blockbuster movie: The Mummy. Evolve Counseling & Behavioral Health Services
Effective Communication is Key
There are many times in relationships when it feels as though we aren’t speaking the same language due to frequent misunderstandings and failed attempts to get our point across. This can be incredibly frustrating and can lead to arguments, hurt feelings, and even the loss of important relationships. Communication can be very difficult and complex, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are a few communication skills to consider: 1. Listen to understand: Many times, we are listening to the other person to prepare a compelling argument of why their point is wrong and ours is right. This is a common mishap in communication because it prevents us from truly hearing the other person’s perspective, and therefore will almost always lead to misunderstandings. 2. Use validation and reflective statements: When another person has taken the time to share something that matters to them, it is crucial that it is appropriately acknowledged. One very effective method of doing this is by using a reflective statement and validating how the other person is feeling. 3. Use “I” statements: One of the most constructive ways of sharing our experience with others, including expressing needs or hurt feelings, is to start the sentence with “I” versus “you” and share about how a situation made you feel versus what the other person did wrong. 4. Be clear and direct: It can be very easy to use passive aggressive remarks in communication because we might feel nervous or uncomfortable to express how we are really feeling. However, this almost always comes across as sarcastic or rude, and thus often escalates conflict. It is crucial to be willing to be open and honest, seek to understand others, and to challenge your own perspectives. Healthy and clear communication can be a total gamechanger when it comes to the quality and well-being of our relationships. Our Services Include:

BUT FIRST, SKIN CARE DERMA HEALTH SKIN & LASER GIVES US A FEW TIPS FOR PROTECTING OUR SKIN THIS SUMMER
ARTICLE BY KRISTY BELLEY
28
S KIN CA R E | BEAU TY
Welcome to summer time in Gilbert! We know that by mid-summer, it’s a little hot. Okay, it’s really hot! However, we locals don’t just sit inside of their house all day with the air conditioning blasting - no way. Summer months are an opportunity to explore the less busy attractions, take advantage of seasonal discounts at hotels and resorts, and indulge in frozen treats and cocktails. This time exploring can really affect your skin. When sunlight hits your skin, it can damage healthy cells. Without proper sun protection, this damage can build up and, in time, signs of sun damage like freckles, age spots, and wrinkles can appear. Our friends at Derma Health Skin & Laser were happy to share some true valley insider tips for protecting your skin this summer.
1
DRINK PLENTY OF H2O!
We live in a desert. It’s important to stay hydrated- keeps the skin more youthful. It is recommended that you drink a minimum of 1 - 8 oz. glass of water for ever 15 - 20 minutes you are out in the sun.
3 4
2
THE REAL YOUTH ELIXIR: SUNSCREEN.
Especially in the sunny state of Arizona! We live in a desert, need I say more? Wearing a hat is not enough and sun rays bounce off everything! It’s important to reapply throughout the day.
PREVENT YOUR HANDS FROM SHOWING YOUR AGE. Apply on SPF before driving in the car as the windshield maximizes the UV rays onto your hands.
EAT CLEAN! In the summer increased sweating can lead to clogged or obstructed pores. Prevent acne by eating clean! Refrain from junk foods. You are what you eat!
5
TRAVEL SIZE SKIN CARE Invest in travel size skin care products for your summer vacay, and for when you need to reapply throughout the day.

As Arizona’s Official Sports Headquarters, Gila River was attracted by Crowder’s fearless competitive nature and cool swagger which is the epitome of Gila River’s tantalizing “You Do You” mantra. The enterprise also aligns with his winning spirit which is reflective of Gila River’s winning experience for guests. Always a crowd favorite and one of the Phoenix Suns’ marquee players, Crowder has been instrumental in helping the team catapult into the NBA playoffs the past two seasons. In addition to being

an outstanding athlete, he is an entrepreneur and gives back to the community. Crowder’s lifestyle clothing brand Bossmann is a creative and approachable line of activewear that was prominently featured on the cover and in the pages of the July 2021 issue of Gilbert City Lifestyle Magazine. Bossmann carries the expression of his personality to unapologetically be yourself which is complementary to Gila River’s mantra, “You Do You.” “Jae Crowder is a bossman, and we are honored to have him as our first-ever brand icon,” says Dominic Orozco, president and chief marketing officer at Gila River
Resorts. “Gila River is celebrating its new resorts designation in a big way with Jae. His talent, drive, and vision with his business manager, Josh Mason, is unmatched. We are excited to welcome Jae as our new teammate to the Gila River family.” Ushering in the partnership, Crowder hosted the Summer Oasis Pool Party at Gila River Resorts - Wild Horse Pass in Chandler in May, that included his friends, fans and guests. The exclusive poolside concert series features celebrity DJs. The DJ lineup for the remainder of the summer includes SNBRN on August 27 and Nicky Romero on September 24.
“I have a vision of growing with Gila River as we have a lot of things in common,” says Jae Crowder. “Being an athlete at the highest level with one of the best teams in the NBA, it is important to grow my local relationships with people whom I am comfortable with and believe in.” Owned and operated by the Gila River Indian Community, Gila River Resorts is one of the largest resorts in the Phoenix metro area, with three popular locations and a fourth, Santan Mountain, set to open in December 2022. G E T ACT IV E | FITN ESS
Bags are packed, reservations are made, and the Out of Office automatic reply is letting everyone know you have officially entered vacation mode. There’s one thing that’s lingering: how to go on vacation without pressing pause on the fitness progress you’ve made, or avoid commuting to a gym and paying drop-in fees. Mayhem Athlete provides online programming that guarantees challenging workouts which can be done in 30 minutes or less. These quick but effective workouts incorporate compound movements such as burpees, push ups and lunges. Compound movements use more than one muscle group, requiring more energy from your muscles to recover. This means you can continue to burn calories while enjoying the beach or sitting at work, long after the workout is over. The Mayhem Athlete M30 program offers two options for all fitness levels. Mayhem Bodyweight, a 30-minute format that requires no equipment, and Mayhem Minimal, a 30-minute format which only requires a couple dumbbells. Mayhem Athletes’ easy to use app, SugarWOD, provides you with a warm up, workout, accessory cool-down, and coaching video - ensuring you get the most out of your 30 minutes! You can also find video demonstrations for each movement within the app and a community of like-minded individuals who are doing the same workouts around the globe.

For the last two years, Ambrose Cosplay and Lobo of Steel—two cosplay afficionados—invited a few other cosplay groups to join them in the Imperial Sand Dunes near Yuma for a special shoot with Bros N Cons Photography. This year, Ascheley Does Cosplay, Sparkinson Cosplay, and Reignweaver Cosplay turned up for a day outing that turned into a two days production. Fighting 40 mph. winds during the first day, the group captured a few Star Wars shots before relocating nearby. The second day weather permitting, they took full advantage of the dunes to re-enact The Mummy! We hope you enjoy their photos in our feature: “From Tatooine to Hamunaptra.”
