LIFESTYLE LETTER
It's a whole lotta of love
February 2022 PUBLISHER

Kristy Belley | kristy.belley@citylifestyle.com
I have heard somewhere that the Greek language has 8 words for the different types of “love”. Depending on the situation, it could refer to: passionate love, affectionate love, selfless love, familiar love, obsessive love, playful love, enduring love, and the love of oneself. Since we all had a rough year in 2021, we decided to splurge a little in February and let ourselves explore the different aspects of “love”: In “The Big Ask”, Chris shows us how to best capture that precious moment of passionate love. In “Local Love Multiplied”, Kristy explains how, every day, shopping local can be more selfless than we think. In “When in Agritopia”, Lynette takes us on a tour of all the fun, playful, and enduring love we have together while we eat, create, and hang out. In “Date Night Right”, our dearest friends, Donna and Jeff, take us on a whirlwind tour of some other places you can spend some time with your favorite person. In “Loving the Local Looks”, Shonna explores the dangerous dept of obsessive love for Spring Shopping Finally, our behavior health specialist, Dr. Elizabeth Fedrick, offers some advice on how to make that love endure. So, while you fill your home with chocolates, flowers and valentines (and perhaps college basketball) this month, remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us. And while you are at it, don’t forget to shop local and support our local makers and artists right here in our community. Stay safe!

Many of Gilbert's most loved family owned businesses have literally been lifted up through the pandemic simply by our residents choosing to shop and buy local. This shopping trend has become known as "local love". We make choices to eat at local restaurants instead of chains, shop the farmer's and maker's markets, and even saved our holiday shopping budgets to participate in the SHOP SMALL SATURDAY instead of the CRAZY BLACK FRIDAY madness When you choose to shop local, it is much more than just helping to support the salaries for the local employee families. Many local business owners are also working behind the scenes at our local non-profits, food pantries, medical clinics, schools. universities, and sports teams. These humble servant leaders in our communities make the most of the dollars that you have chosen to invest with their small businesses by reinvesting in
local kindness. San Tan Ford is one of these beloved local companies which is owned by Tim Hovik, who lives right here in the East Valley. The truth is, by buying a vehicle at San Tan Ford or by choosing them for a routine oil change, you directly help dozens of local charities and causes. Now they would never tell you this – because that is not who they are nor why they do what they do – however, we felt like you might like to know as an educated consumer when you are choosing to shop local. So we did some digging ourselves and wanted to share a few of partners that you directly helped this year by shopping local. We are certain that you will be proud of the missions of kindness that you helped make possible. We also included some direct quotes so you could hear how you personally have impacted families here in the East Valley by shopping with San Tan Ford. Thank you so much for your Local Love

Several sports players, foundations, corporations and families adopted homes in our community or to help raise the funds necessary for continuing operations at House of Refuge. "Our partnership with San Tan Ford has been ongoing for many years. Tim really blessed House of Refuge in 2020 when our Gala was canceled due to Covid 19.", Tim gifted House of Refuge a brand new Ford Bronco to raffle off at $100 per ticket to raise funds to supplement some of the loss. Although, they were not able to fully recover from the Gala loss, the impact the ticket sales had on House of Refuge was significant. 100 Club of Arizona The mission of the 100 Club is to provide support to families of first responders who have been seriously injured or killed

FROM THE WILL YOU?.. CAPTURING THE SPECIAL MOMENT WITH CITY LIFESTYLE WEDDING PORTRAIT SPECIALIST CHRIS FRAILEY
Ask
Chris Frailey has been honored to be a part of many, many weddings but all weddings start with one big question, “Will you marry me?” We know that proposals these days seem to be almost as important as the big day. With all the emotions and perfect reactions, it would be a shame to not have that captured. We have put together a few tips and tricks to planning the perfect surprise proposal photo shoot. • Choose your location. Make sure there’s a spot for our photographer to conceal themselves. It might be somewhere behind you (such as at a table or literally behind some shrubs), or it might be in plain sight (for example, you could agree with our photographer to be there before you reach your destination and to pretend the beautiful landscape, random people, as tourists, or even food shots for the restaurant). Whatever it is, do make sure our photographer can hide away from your loved one’s sight.

• Timing is key. We cannot emphasize this enough: timing is absolutely crucial when it comes to these things. Make sure you set a very clear plan and that you follow through with it every step of the way. If something goes wrong before the moment, have a backup plan in place. You want your photographer to be ready to shoot the magical moment at the right time, since you only get one shot at a surprise! • Make this a special moment. Don’t let your loved one get out of the house in their sweatpants, hair in a pony, and sneakers. Take her out to a special dinner, invent a pretext, do anything it takes for her to be ready – but do make sure she is not suspecting anything! • Another not so sneaky option is to set up a general photo shoot. It could be a gift for their birthday, for example. When you start shooting the photos, though, drop to one knee and make your proposal. It is the perfect way to “hide” our photographer in plain sight. This will allow our photographer to shoot better quality photos too. • Get your friends involved if they can keep a secret, host a party, or take a group trip to a great location. Have a pretend surprise for one of them. It also allows you to share this event with the people you love. Regardless of the path you choose to take, remember that this is a big moment and you want to plan everything carefully. At the same time, don’t stress out too much about it – you want your love for each other to transfer to the pictures, not your anxiety over planning the perfect moment! If you need any help to set up that special shoot, be sure to reach out to Chris. You can check more of his work at chrisfrailey.com or on his Instagram @chrisfraileyweddings

February is the
Month for Love
But, for many of us, Valentine’s Day can be a mixed bag of emotions. Sometimes it’s because Valentine’s Day reminds us of past relationships gone wrong. Or sometimes it’s because we are alone on that day and end up feeling lonely or rejected. Regardless of the reason, Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a day that has negative feelings or connotations. Let’s make the day all about you!
Here are some tips that can help you get through Valentine’s Day: 1. Eat your favorite foods: You probably don’t want to go out to eat, restaurants are so busy on Valentine’s Day. But, you can treat yourself to your favorite recipe. Feel free to indulge, it’s your day. 2. Go for a hike or bike ride: Gilbert has so many amazing hiking and bike trails. Pick your favorite trail or even try out one you’ve never been on before. The sunshine and exercise are always great to help out if you are feeling down. 3. Write down what you are grateful for: Taking just a few moments to write out the parts of your life that you are thankful for can go a long way in helping to make sure that you don’t get caught up in just negative thoughts. You have a lot of wonderful things going on for you. Take some time to notice them and journal them.

Agritopia Farm The center of the Agritopia universe is Agritopia Farm. The community garden is a fun walk showcasing all that is blooming in the current season. Local gardening aficionados and aspiring farmers show off their growing skills throughout the picturesque garden that includes everything from flowers and sugarcane to string beans and radishes. There might even be a spot or two for a young couple to steal a kiss! Wednesdays are the busiest days, with a free farm tour every second Wednesday of the month from 10:0011:00 a.m. Learn about the history of the farm and what is currently growing in the orchards and fields. Farm Nights take place 5-8:00 p.m. every second Wednesday of the month. Similar to a farmers’ market, this is an engaging spot where the health conscious can peruse local vendors and pick up certified organic produce under the romantically watchful eye of the moon. U-Picks are just what they say they are. Show up and pick citrus or other produce, depending on what’s in season. And don’t forget to bring the Porsche… It makes for a great place to store your oranges until you’re ready to leave. Check the agritopiafarms.com website for a schedule of U-Picks. Grab lunch or dinner at Joe’s Farm Grill, a community staple that was featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” a decade ago and simply exploded in popularity. Many of the menu items at Joe’s are grown right on the adjacent farm.

Get to Agritopia Sure, a young couple seeking something to do for date night (or a date day) could go anywhere in the Valley. “The joy of life is experiencing something new and there’s nothing more exciting than having that experience with the person you’re in love with.”
Dating. Some of you dread it. I did too until I discovered the secret. The subject captivated me so much I studied it like it was a college course and then I wrote a book about it. Now I say, “If you don’t enjoy dating, you’re doing it wrong.” For some reason I had the idea that once you had “the conversation” and you were a thing, the courtship ended. No more surprises (which I love) and no more Saturday night Dates — I was wrong. Our wedding vows consisted of Jeffrey telling me it was his goal to make me fall in love with him, every day, all over again. Whether we’re alone in the house or out to eat, Jeff always gets the door and my chair. Date night, whether it be Friday or Saturday, has never stopped and I’m almost always astonished. And let’s not forget about the list. That’s right. He has a bonafide list. Jeff’s list is broken down into “Ambience,” “Cost,” “Adventurous,” and sometimes we’ll just decide to jump in the car and go for an “explore” to see where we land. That’s how we discovered the best lamb shank around. Zorba’s Greek Cafe in Chandler is a real treat. Unassuming and friendly, this little hole-inthe-wall place is now our favorite when we want good, solid, comfort food. During the pandemic we made sure to support Zorba’s every chance we could. Last week we were in the mood for one of our go-to places. High Tide Seafood Bar & Grill in Gilbert. It offers a spacious, contemporary spot for seafood, burgers, beer and oysters, but my choice is usually the crab cake. The staff, food and ambience do not disappoint. Also a great place to enjoy the bar. Then there’s Cuisine & Wine Bistro in Chandler. We enjoyed it so much when Jeff took me there for our 2nd month anniversary, he decided we should get engaged there. This sophisticated, family-owned

establishment offers classic French cuisine you are sure to enjoy. Remember, date night doesn’t have to be at night. It was our good fortune to meet Dave and Flor, the owners of Ghost Ranch in Tempe the last time we were there. How fun! This chic venue features modern Southwest cuisine and is our favorite place when I have a yen for a Burger. Both the food and the drink menu are one page which is usually a sign that the food is going to be exceptional, and it is. Trying new places is part of the dating experience – one such place is The Salt Cellar in Scottsdale. New England-style seafood served in an intimate underground hideaway. I believe it is the only underground restaurant in Arizona. The food was great and the decor felt like we were right in the heart of a big city which was exciting in itself! Don’t limit yourself to just the two of you. We ventured out with one of our favorite couples to experience The Top of the Rock Restaurant in Tempe. New American cafe in a Marriott Hotel offering 360-degree views of the valley below and rustic decor. That in itself was a treat. And finally there’s The Hidden House in Chandler. Fine dining in a secluded, country-chic setting, plus an informal bar. Not to be missed! Jeff took me there on our first Valentine’s Day together. We’ve been back multiple times since. The ambiance, the service, and the food never disappoints. So if you feel like your relationship needs a little pizzazz, come up with a plan. It doesn’t have to cost an arm-and-a-leg. The joy of life is experiencing something new and there’s nothing more exciting than having that experience with the person you’re in love with. That, Jeffrey says, is how he gets me to fall in love with him…every day…All Over Again.

for Spring LOCAL STYLE INFLUENCER SHONNA FUNK STOPPED IN TO SEE OUR FRIENDS AT APRICOT LANE
Shonna Funk is a self proclaimed fashion and make-up junkie. This Gilbert mother of 2, small business owner, social media influencer was ready to lend a hand when her friend, fellow small business owner Stephanie Neal, reached out for her to check out some of the early spring arrivals at Apricot Lane. The best thing about living in Gilbert is that we are one of the few places in the country that we can break out our short skirts, sleeveless dresses, and open toed sandals in February. Be sure to check out more of Shonna tips for Spring at @LifewithShonFunk on Instagram.

Relationships are one of the most significant and influential aspects of our existence as humans. And while romantic relationships provide a sense of connection and fulfilment, they can also at times be complicated and tricky to navigate. Our upbringings directly influence how we engage in relationships, such as how we communicate, show affection, behave during conflict, and so on. In situations where there was not a healthy example of how to navigate romantic relationships, this leads to repeating the same dysfunctional behaviors that were witnessed, as well as a lack of knowledge about how to engage in a more positive manner. The fact is, it is incredibly difficult to be good at anything we were not effectively taught or shown how to do, and this is no different for relationships. It is important to note that just because you might be lacking a framework for healthy romantic relationships, doesn’t mean it’s too late to learn new and effective ways to not only improve, but also strengthen, your relationship. Here are five ideas to get you started:

Understand your partner’s love language: Learn to love your partner in the way that they need to be loved. This can be confusing because if you feel loved a certain way, you might think this is also how your partner feels loved. However, without knowing what your partner needs, it is easy to miss the mark. Consider taking the Five Love Languages quiz (www.5lovelanguages. com) with your partner, so that you can each start loving in the way the other needs. Provide frequent positive feedback: Focus on the positive aspects of your partner and point them out regularly. Take a second to reflect on how often you compliment, praise, or thank your partner for not only the big things, but also for their daily contributions. Expressing admiration and gratitude is a surefire way to increase positive interactions. Use validating statements: When your partner shares something that matters to them, it is crucial that it is appropriately acknowledged. For example, if your partner says they were hurt because you didn’t call them back, avoid statements like, “Relax. We talk all the time.” And instead consider, “Your feelings were hurt because I didn’t call. I’m sorry.” Use “I” statements: When expressing needs or hurt feelings, start the sentence with “I” versus “you.” This method of delivery decreases the other person’s tendency to become defensive. For example, “I am hurt that I didn’t get a call back” versus “you never call me back.” Spend time apart: Spending all of your free time with your partner can actually backfire and lead to an increase in conflict and boredom. Conversely, when you spend some time apart, this can increase both novelty and desire. Finding the perfect balance of time together and time apart can be a very effective way for keeping the spark alive.
