New Year, New Us

January 2022 PUBLISHER

Robin Belley | robin.belley@citylifestyle.com SALES DIR ECTOR

Kristy Belley | kristy.belley@citylifestyle.com

There’s something inspiring about a new year. Perhaps it’s the resolutions we make that encourage us to lose weight, expand our horizons or even leave an unfulfilling job. Maybe it’s just the fact that we’re leaving the past year — whether it was good or bad — behind us and looking forward to starting anew. However we approach Jan. 1, there’s no denying that our mindset is all about change. We here at Gilbert City Lifestyle are also changing — as you can see from our new name. Out with Gilbert Lifestyle and in with Gilbert City Lifestyle! And, as you turn the pages, you’ll notice a fresh elevated design that’s clean and modern. The creative team worked diligently to bring you a selection of beautiful pages that showcase large images and easy-to-read layouts. We’re still the same magazine that you’ve known and loved over the past few years — just better. In keeping with many New Year’s resolutions, this issue is dedicated to health and wellness — from working out and eating right to taking time for yourself. Even Shaquille O’Neal joins in, sharing his latest venture, a line of waters enhanced with pink Himalayan salt and electrolytes. Shaq knows how important hydration is when it comes to training or even just hanging out in the desert sun. We hope you enjoy our new look. Let us know your thoughts, and have a healthy and happy 2022!

Change Your Beliefs in Order to

Change Your Life for the New Year. All of our decisions in life are filtered through our core belief system. Our core beliefs are developed during early childhood and are reinforced throughout the life span. These beliefs ultimately impact our thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and life outcomes. Thus, if we are operating on negative beliefs about ourselves (i.e. I am not good enough, I am lazy, I can’t reach my goals), this will inevitably impact our self-esteem, the decisions we make, and the relationships we find ourselves in. It is not until we work to replace negative beliefs with healthier alternatives, that we can start to see an improved sense of self-worth. Some ways to start improving your core beliefs:

Arizona Humane Society Breaks Ground on New Papago Park Shelter The Arizona Humane Society broke ground in November on the Rob and Melani Walton Papago Park Campus. Scheduled to open in early 2023, the 72,000-square-foot campus will be located at the juncture of the 202 and 143 freeways in the Papago Park Buttes. With ICUs, a teaching hospital, an expanded trauma hospital, and additional adoption space, it will offer medical and behavioral interventions, treatment and care at a level not yet seen in the U.S.

1. Be aware of negative self-talk and work to reframe it. For example, if you make a mistake, instead of saying, “I’m so dumb” reframe to, “I messed up and can do better next time.” 2. Identify a couple things you are good at (and enjoy) and set aside time each week to engage in those activities. 3. Use a log each night to track two things you feel proud of from that day. 4. Surround yourself with people who are supportive and encouraging. 5. Seek professional help to address where your core beliefs originally developed and get the necessary support to change them. A S S E T SHAQUILLE O’NEAL ELEVATES SCOTTSDALE-BASED WATER COMPANY TO ALL-STAR STATUS ARTICLE BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON

16

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

“I remember from my Suns days how hot and dry it can be in the Sonoran Desert! You have to be constantly aware of how much water you are drinking.” — Shaquille O’Neal

It’s hard to believe that Shaquille O’Neal has been retired from the NBA for a decade. Since 2011, the engaging personality who fans grew to love on the court has grown his reputation and the brands he’s associated with into an empire. Whether he’s acting, releasing rap albums or representing his restaurant, Big Chicken, if O’Neal is involved in a product or service, it will take center court every time. Scottsdale-based The Alkaline Water Co. scored a slam dunk when O’Neal became an equity partner, member of its board of advisors and marquee brand ambassador for its beverage Alkaline88. “I believe in being authentic and only working with brands that I use and trust,” says O’Neal. “I actually reached out to the company after I found their water during a road trip. “My investment is because the business fundamentals are strong, the product is great, and they are making the world a better place. All the ingredients are there for this to become a big success,” he adds. Specifically, Alkaline88 is known for its perfect 8.8 ph balance and exceptional hydration qualities. In a unique twist, one version of Alkaline88, enhanced with pink Himalayan salt and electrolytes, is packaged in eco-friendly aluminum bottles, which were a nostalgic attraction for the four-time NBA champion and basketball Hall of Famer. When asked if the aluminum bottle was an attractive component of the product, he says, “One hundred percent! Plus, drinking Alkaline88 water out of the aluminum bottle reminds me of drinking water from the hose as a kid. There is just something magical about that.” O’Neal, who played for the Phoenix Suns in 2008 and 2009, knows first-hand how brutal the desert heat can

be in Arizona. “Everyone need to stay hydrated, but unfortunately, most people aren’t,” O’Neal explains. “Athletes and people who exercise want their muscles to perform at peak levels, and Alkaline88 with its superior hydrating ability is a great solution. And whew! I remember from my Suns days how hot and dry it can be in the Sonoran Desert! You have to be constantly aware of how much water you are drinking.” O’Neal continues, “What makes Alkaline88 special is its simple ingredients that people trust. Our competitors use buffers and complicated ingredients.” Alkaline88 is water and pink Himalayan salt — that’s all. Its smooth taste encourages consumers to drink more, allowing them to become more fully hydrated. “Shaquille O’Neal’s reputation as an astute investor, larger-than-life brand partner and phenomenal ambassador makes this partnership extremely exciting,” says Aaron Keay, chairman of The Alkaline Water Co. “We want to welcome Shaquille to the company’s advisory board and believe his positive presence and global outreach will enable Alkaline88 to aggressively push our growth trajectory even faster.” O’Neal is engaged and hands-on with his endeavors with Alkaline88. He says, “I’m involved in new product innovation, retail relationships and marketing strategies. I believe Alkaline88 will continue to make products that improve people’s lives, and I believe the business will continue to grow and thrive.” He adds, “I’m happy to be a part of it.” The Alkaline88 flagship brand of premium alkaline water is now available in 75,000 stores across all trades in the U.S. For more information, visit thealkalinewaterco.com.

Feel the Burn CREATE AN AT-HOME GYM THAT MAXIMIZES YOUR WORKOUTS

ARTICLE BY REBECCA L. RHOADES | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LENDSEY GOMEZ

18

G E T ACT IV E | FITN ESS

Exercise equipment is a big seller in January, thanks to New Year’s resolutions. Every year, homeowners rush out to buy the latest and greatest machine that often ends up serving as a clothes hanger just months later. Personal trainer Brandon Fougnies’ at-home gym rivals some of the best in the Valley. The Gilbert resident and owner of Strict Vision Athletics began building his workout mecca in his Morrison Ranch garage eight years ago. “All of this equipment is really reflective of the methodology I use when I am creating a program for somebody,” he says. The eye-catching blue-and-yellow space is jam-packed with just about everything a serious athlete could ever want. There’s a power rack with all the attachments, a HIT Axel, battle ropes, resistance bands, dumbbells and kettlebells, medicine balls and so much more. While some pieces, such as the Air Runner, cost thousands of dollars, there are others that are just as effective and ideal for the at-home user. “There are a lot of small, almost miscellaneous pieces of equipment, like an Inertia Wave, flywheel or Indian clubs, that people probably don’t know about that will make a big different in training and won’t break the bank,” Fougnies explains. Mirrors play a big role in Fougnies’ — and any — gym’s efficacy. He says, “With a lot of the form techniques that I implement for my clients, it’s important that they see themselves in the mirror so they can understand the technique aspect.” When not working out in his own garage, Fougnies consults on home gym design. He notes that the average home gym he helps create costs about $25,000 and includes a half-dozen pieces of equipment. “I would recommend getting with a trainer before investing in a home gym,” he explains. “That should be something you do last because it’s such a big investment.” Whether you’re looking to create your own at-home workout or are simply planning on joining your local global gym, Fougnies cautions on being realistic with your goals. “There’s nothing magical or mystical about Jan. 1,” he says. “This is a journey in chapters of months and years, not days and weeks. A year may seem unfathomable at the beginning, but just take it day by day and week by week. You’ll transform your whole lifestyle.

BRANDON FOUGNIES’ GYM ESSENTIALS Whether you’re interesting in starting a new workout routine or building a dedicated home gym, here are some items to keep you moving.

04 // RESISTANCE TRAINING

01 // Inertia Wave. Similar to battle ropes, these lightweight oscillating tubes provide a unique low-impact conditioning workout that can be performed outdoors. Here, Fougnies performs the Hero Wave, which features alternating hand movements. 02 // Dumbbells. Build strength and muscle by lifting weights. Dumbbells are one of the most widely used at-home pieces of exercise equipment. Start with a set that has light, medium and heavy weights to accommodate any exercises you wish to perform. 03 // Air Runner. Forego the traditional treadmill in favor of an Air Runner. This self-powered machine packs an intense workout into a small package. The added effort to run on the motorless curved surface means you burn up to 30% more calories. 04 // Resistance training. You don’t need fancy equipment to work out. Use your body’s own weight to burn calories and increase muscle strength. Squats, lunges, pushups and pull-ups are some of the best strength-training exercises for beginners.

CASTLE H OT S P R I N G S LOCATION: 5050 N. start the new year organized

Take charge this month by eliminating the clutter that’s clogging your home — and your life ARTICLE BY SK Y RUM LE Y | PHOTOG R APHY BY ZOFIA SE LLS

Do you wish you were more organized but don’t know where to begin? We’ve all heard the saying, “Out with the old and in with the new.” But when it comes to home design, the motto is, “Out with the old, put the rest away.” The following tips will help you get and stay organized in your home or office. Before starting to organize, it’s often necessary to purge. Ask yourself the following questions: Have I used the item in the last six months? Is it a seasonal item that I use part of the year? Does it hold sentimental value? Does it serve a functional purpose? Is it an aesthetic item that brings you joy? If you answered no to all the above, then it might be time to part with the item. Determine a plan for the items you will purge. Will you hold a garage sale? Can you bring a bag of cosmetics or clothes to your next book club and let your friends rummage through them? Do you have what’s required to fix that broken trinket? Be realistic about your abilities. Create designated piles for donating, throwing away, repairing, selling, returning to the proper owner or giving away. As you make your way through your house, determine if any of the piles will be added to. If not, execute your plan to remove the items from your home as soon as possible. The longer you hold on to a pile, the more likely it is that it will simply get relocated to somewhere else in your space. Once you’ve completed purging, take your time to decide on an organizational system that works best for the items you still have and that you can realistically maintain over time. Common forms of organization are alphabetical, numerical, seasonal, by color, by purpose, by formality or by how often the item is used. You may find that the first one you try doesn’t quite work for your particular space. Organizing is sometimes about trial and error. CONTINUED >

After you’ve determined your strategy, you may need to invest in containers, dividers or other devices to hold items and keep categories separated. Never purchase containers before verifying how they will be used and measuring the space in which they will be stored. The hardest challenge in purging and organizing your home is the long-term maintenance. As you continue to accumulate items, you must work your way through the steps all over again. It’s important to continuously ask yourself if you use everything you have or if some items are just taking up space. If you have too many of a particular item that it no longer fits within the parameters of its storage space, it may be time to purge. Allowing things to overflow into other places is an easy way to find yourself unorganized. Buy additional storage containers or dividers only as needed. Continue to organize alphabetically, by color or by whatever system you’ve chosen. Or, if that no longer works, consider changing to a different system. If you’ve ever wondered how some people always have such tidy homes, the trick is that they purge and organize regularly. The job is never done. By taking the guessing game out of where to begin, the process becomes a little easier. And here’s a secret: The more often you purge and reevaluate your organization, the faster and easier it becomes. REDEFINING THE MOMMY MAKEOVER NEW NONSURGICAL OPTIONS OFFER BUSY MOMS A NEW WAY ARTICLE BY REBECCA L. RHOADES | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS FRAILEY

Being a mom is one of the most satisfying things a woman can do. But the toll it takes on the body can result in poor self-confidence and even physical discomfort. Enter the mommy makeover. This cutesy term actually refers to a package of serious surgical procedures aimed at returning the body to its pre-pregnancy state. A traditional mommy makeover includes liposuction, a tummy tuck and breast augmentation or lift. These procedures are not only invasive, they’re also expensive as they require hospitalization, and they have the potential for unsightly scarring, depending on the patients’ skin. Fat transfers, especially to the

face or buttocks, known as a Brazilian Butt Lift, also have recently entered the makeover lexicon. So what’s a mom to do if she would like to feel better about herself but is unsure of the risks or expense related to traditional surgery? Nonsurgical body contouring, known as lipolysis, is the latest option for fat removal and transfer for women and men. One form of lipolysis is the Beleza Pura Process for Body Sculpting, offered by Pura Medical in Mesa. Below, we look at the three main treatment options, and we meet one Gilbert mom and learn about her experiences.

TRACY’S STORY Tracy Morris is your typical busy mom. With four kids, ranging in age from 20 to 10, the former dance studio owner was always on the go — not leaving her any time to focus on herself. Childbirth and breastfeeding had left their effects on her body, but like so many other moms, she was worried about surgical costs, recovery times and scarring. Then last summer, a friend of Morris’s confided that she’d had a noninvasive mommy makeover at Pura Medical in Mesa. Morris reveals that she had researched traditional plastic surgery in the past but knew that what she wanted done would have cost her at least $20,000. “I just couldn’t justify spending that much money,” she says. For a fraction of that price, Morris had sculpting on her upper and lower abdomen, flanks, and inner and outer thighs, and the removed fat was redistributed to her breasts. All procedures were performed on the same day, and the results were almost immediate. “I took my bandages off and looked at my legs and thought, ‘I don’t even remember when my legs looked like that.’ It was kind of encouraging. I feel as though I am at where I was five years ago. I’m not limited by the extra distributed weight, and even though the scale hasn’t changed much, when I put my pants on, there isn’t a roll anymore. This procedure changes the way you feel in your clothes.” She concludes, “I still feel like me, just better.”

body sculpting This nonsurgical shaping procedure is performed in-office by a licensed physician. The most common areas of treatment are the thighs, abdomen, flanks, hips, breasts, back, arms and buttocks. Scarring is minimal, and patients are typically back on their feet in a day or two.

fat transfer

This natural solution for restoring volume and shape takes fat from stubborn areas and transfers it to areas where it is needed, resulting in a smooth, youthful appearance. The most common areas for transfer are the breasts and buttocks.

abdominal etching

A common component of the dad bod makeover, this procedure sculpts and enhances the appearance of the waistline and creates six-pack abs. It targets the belly’s subcutaneous fat without disturbing the muscle layers, resulting in more chiseled look. JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / G I L BE RT

Clean Eating For years, husband and wife team Erin and Chad Romanoff brought their plant-based dishes to Gilbert residents in a 1968 Avion travel trailer, gaining a local following of enthusiastic epicures — one that quickly outgrew the capabilities of their mobile kitchen. So when local developer and visionary Joe Johnston opened a spot for makers, breweries and restaurants in a Quonset hut on the grounds of Agritopia, he invited the couple to become a part of the small-business community. For the past five years, The Uprooted Kitchen has been serving hungry visitors and residents fresh, flavorful cuisine from the brick-and-mortar location. “Plant-based organic is our focus — whole foods, things that we make from scratch,” Erin notes. “We’ve always used Agritopia farm produce, even in our food truck, and now we can see the farm from our window, so it’s like the perfect fit.” Unlike veganism or vegetarianism, plant-based foods are whole foods. No animal products or processed ingredients are included. “Veganism is a wonderful thing, but there’s a lot of vegan junk food out there. Oreos are vegan," Erin explains. "We want people to know that when they come to eat with us, they’re getting the healthiest spectrum of food. It’s filled with vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants. It boosts your immune system, helps with your digestive health and gives you great energy.” Take for example the Cobb Salad Bowl. This unique twist on an American classic is bursting with flavor and texture. Beans replace eggs for protein. Tempeh, seasoned with maple syrup and roasted until crispy, mimics bacon, while crumbled tofu reminds the mouth of feta cheese. Sunflower seeds bring added crunch. The dish is topped with an organic cashew dressing for a tart, creamy finish. “It’s definitely one of our most popular salads,” Erin says. “It’s flavors are very familiar, but we put our own twist on it. “People are always surprised at what you can do with plants,” she continues. “Seasoning is key. There are so many recipes online for everything from veggie burgers to salad dressings.” For anyone interested in exploring a plant-based diet, Erin suggests starting small. “It’s very overwhelming,” she explains, noting that many of her customers don’t eat plant-based every day but instead incorporate two or three meals a week. “It’s a process and a transformation. Start with the goal of a couple plant-based meals each week,” she says. “Focus on the whole foods. If you add new things into your diet slowly, it becomes a positive experience.” For more information, visit theuprootedkitchen.com.

The Cold Plunge

Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 36

T R E N D SE T T E R | FITN ESS

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.

New Habits for a Better New Year FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS IN 2022 The New Year is always an opportunity for fresh starts, new perspectives and working towards goals we put off the previous year (and likely the year before that). Going into the new year with a motivated outlook is something that has become somewhat of a societal norm, but unfortunately, giving up on those goals within the first week or two of January is also common. Statistics indicate that about 92% of the millions of people who set New Year’s resolutions don’t actually stick to them. Finding better ways to create and maintain new habits will help you succeed. Here are some ideas to get you started: Self-reflection Engage in an honest self-assessment of how you feel about 2021. Ask yourself, “What went well, what did I accomplish, what I you learn and what do I want to change?” Snowball Effect People struggle sticking to goals and new habits when they are extreme or not realistic. Start small and break your goals into bite-size chunks. Identify a

goal you can achieve in about 30 days or less, and use that success as motivation to keep moving forward. Create a Routine New habits are only effective if you are set up for success. As the saying goes, failure to plan means you plan to fail. Use tools such as calendars, alarms and reminders to assist you in sticking to these new behaviors. Practice Gratitude Research supports that shifting our focus to gratitude can help us to deal better with daily struggles and improve general well-being. A daily gratitude journal is one of the most effective ways to identify what is going well. Circle of Control Think of the inside of a circle as the things you can influence and change, and what’s on the outside as things you have no power over. Focus your energy on what’s inside your circle, and you will feel more empowered and in control of your life outcomes.
