CHECKLIST OUTDOOR LIGHTING Since it gets dark so much earlier in late fall and winter, you will likely need extra lighting in your outdoor entertaining areas. This is the perfect excuse to hang extra string lights bordering your patio, crossing from your house to your gazebo. Permanent Fairy lights placed around your outdoor space is a great way to add a subtle glow and increase your outdoor entertaining space. WARMTH IS KEY Even if you live in a warmer climate the winter months can get a bit chilly. Keeping your guests comfortable is important for everyone to enjoy an outdoor holiday party. Fun Holiday Blankets are an easy option. Each guest can receive a blanket at their seat or grab one from a decorative basket to wrap around them if things get too chilly. Another option is to make warmth part of your party theme with an ugly Christmas sweater party or a funny winter hat party. FOCUS ON FIRE FEATURES Patio and fire pits provide a warm, welcoming ambience for a social gathering and can make a party in oh-so-sunny Arizona feel a bit more like a winter soiree. Arrange seating around your fire pit or face your patio furniture towards your fireplace to encourage your guests to get cozy. Make roasting hot dogs or marshmallows part of the fun to give your guests and excuse to gather around the fire. HAPPY HOLIDAYS GIFTS A great way to say thank you to your guests for attending your holiday party is to send them home with a festive grab bag. Ornaments or a cute pair of holiday socks are a great way to say thank you for attending and come again next year. This small token of your appreciation does not need to be elaborate. Sometimes the little things make big holiday events more memorable. KEEP EXTRA GIFTS ON HAND If your guests will be exchanging gifts at your holiday gathering or if a white elephant gift exchange is part of the festivities, be sure to have a few extra gifts on hand. This way, if someone forgets their white elephant gift or brings an extra person to the party, you can make sure everyone there has something to unwrap.

The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. Pratt Brothers Christmas Holiday Spectacular HOLIDAY LIGHT SHOW EVOLVES FROM ENTERTAINMENT ATTRACTION TO HOLLYWOOD TV FEATURE

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. For two enterprising brothers, these holidays will be a bit more merry and bright… And a whole lot busier! Kyle and Sammy Pratt love the holidays and all the associated fun and celebration. The duo turned their passion for holiday lights and entertainment into the Pratt Brothers Christmas & Holiday Spectacular, a thrilling light experience and immersive holiday wonderland at Bell Bank Park in Mesa. Installing the light displays and attractions that go along with it was a monumental task. “We start about mid-April, when we get on-site” says Sammy. “From that day forward, we pretty much have been working 24-hours around the clock, trying to race to put it up for this year.” Some of the facets of getting the attraction open included designing and building out the displays, working with the City of Mesa and Mesa Fire and Medical Department, coordinating electricity and ensuring safety standards. It may come as no surprise that the brothers’ parents were supportive when they had built a Christmas “ride” in their living room. That ride evolved into what is now the train ride at the Pratt Brothers Christmas & Holiday Spectacular.

The Pratt Brothers were born into the entertainment business. Their father is Arizona broadcast legend, Dave Pratt. Together, Dave and his wife Paula fostered their sons’ holiday obsession. “Growing up, Sammy and I were so fortunate to go to Disneyland every year during the holidays,” says Kyle. “When we would come home, we were so bummed that the magic was over… We wanted to keep that same feeling going that we felt as kids and share that with everyone in Arizona. It turned into a hobby gone mad!” Their first holiday light show started at their home in 2015 with a handful of neighbors and the mailman coming by to see the displays. By 2020, they had been shut down because of all the traffic and people clogging their residential street. The Pratt Brothers re-imagined the experience on a bigger scale. Be prepared! The Holiday Spectacular will take a few hours to enjoy. The immersive experience attracts all ages and features over six million lights, a three-story gingerbread house, “snowfall” and bubbles. And of course, there are two trains available to take guests through the holiday experience to visit themed areas including Sugar

Plum Acres, Bakery Boulevard, Cotton Candy Corner, Lollipop Lane, Marshmallow Way, and Peppermint Place. It’s a visual and aromatic-filled wonderland everywhere you go. A holiday light show with pyrotechnics takes place every 15-minutes. Holiday characters, themed entertainment and yummy treats round out the experience. With so much attention on their Christmas lights, Hollywood was bound to notice. Kyle and Sammy were chosen to participate in “The Great Christmas Light Fight” airing nationally on ABC. “It gets four families together across America and they compete for $50,000,” explains Sammy. “Kyle and I are on that show this year and we’re just as anxious for the outcome as anyone else!” The show runs through mid-December. “Even if we don’t win, I think the coolest thing is that it’s a mini-documentary on the house,” finishes Sammy. “It’s a moment in time that was captured with our entire family and filmed with professional cameras. Salt dough, or dough art as we refer to it in our family, is a simple yet beautiful way to adorn spaces around the holidays. Making salt dough ornaments is a holiday tradition that we have been doing since I was a kid in the ‘80s, but the process has been around even longer than that! The use of salt dough is as old as dirt, or I guess I should say as old as clay. Even so, salt dough has made a comeback in recent years and for good reason—it only requires

three ingredients, and the festive end product will last for years to come. We still pull out the salt dough ornaments I made as a kid and place them on our tree each year. I love that old traditions can live throughout the decades as we find ways to reinvent them with current-day trends. That is exactly what I did here with these lovely Snowflake Salt Dough Ornaments. Salt Dough SUPPLIES NEEDED • Rolling Pin • Cookie Cutters (optional) • Plastic or Metal Straw • Cookie Sheet • Parchment Paper • Lettered Stamps • Acrylic Sealer • Bakers Twine

INGREDIENTS • 1 cup All Purpose White Flour • ½ cup Table Salt • ½ cup Water (give or take) • 4oz White Acrylic Paint

STEP-BY-STEP 1. Mix together flour and salt. Add ¼ cup water and paint (if you want a white dough, otherwise you may leave it out). Stir to mix. If needed, slowly add more water until you reach a pizza dough consistency. Finally, remove dough from the bowl and knead on a floured surface until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Add more flour if too sticky, add more water if too dry. 2. To make ornaments, use a rolling pin to roll dough to ½ to ¼ inch thick. Use a cookie cutter to create snowflake shapes. Use a straw to poke a hole at the top of each snowflake to allow a space to thread your twine after baking. For that Arizona Twist, a cactus-shaped cookie cutter would also make easy fun ornaments 3. Place ornaments on parchment-lined baking sheets. Bake at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 hours until dry. Flip ornaments every 30 minutes for a faster bake. 4. Once cooled, add decorative touches with lettered stamps, acrylic paint or Sharpie markers. Finally, spray one side of the ornament with an acrylic seal. Let dry, flip and spray the other side. 5. Once dried completely, thread twine through the hole created before baking. Hang from your tree or add to your gift boxes as gift tags. SHARING A LOVE OF ARTS ARTS SCENE PODCAST

Gilbert resident Lynette Carrington and her close friend Ari Levin share a love of the arts. Luckily, Lynette is the marketing and events specialist at AZ Big Media and Ari works as the executive director at the Madison Center for the Arts and executive producer of JOLON Productions. These two well-placed positions put them each in front of executives and creatives from the local arts scene—a perfect place to be for an arts-based podcast. The duo recently launched “The Arts Scene Podcast with Lynette and Ari,” which explores all facets of the arts, upcoming performances and productions, and a focus on educational and community giveback angles. “The Arts Scene Podcast features high-level executives and creatives from the worlds of theater, dance, music, film and related productions, and the occasional surprise celebrity interview,” Lynette shares. “Each episode is 15 minutes or less, the perfect amount of time to focus on important and timely information and keep your attention,” Ari adds. “The podcast was in the planning stages for about six months,” he continues.

“Lynette and I had been looking for a project to do together because we both have a passion for arts and entertainment, and we have a great work dynamic. We launched the first podcast episode in late September and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.” So far, podcast guests have included Maestro Tito Muñoz, the Virginia G. Piper Music Director for the Phoenix Symphony, Floriana Frassetto, the co-founder of iconic Swiss theater troupe Mummenschanz, and actor Lee Arenberg from "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Once Upon a Time" among others. “Between the two of us, we regularly work with high-profile executives and personalities, so we'll aim to get as many of them on the show as we can,” Ari explains. With 2023 right around the corner, Lynette shares that in the New Year they plan to continue their podcast and may even take the show on the road, broadcasting from special events. “We are also looking at developing some additional TV and film projects,” she adds. “We are also looking forward to working more closely with our sponsor, The W.I.S.E.

Start by whisking together a little cocoa powder and hot water in a bowl. When the cocoa mixes in, add it to a slow cooker along with chopped chocolate, milk, heavy cream, a can of evaporated milk, sugar, and a hint of salt. That’s it! Let it go low and slow for 6 hours, or on the high setting for 4 hours. You will want to whisk the hot chocolate occasionally to make sure the chocolate isn’t stuck to the bottom.

Insider Tip - Use a broken bar for your chocolate as chocolate chips seem to give an inconsistent result You can add some southwest flare by making Mexican Hot Chocolate using the same slow cooker method Mexican hot chocolate is slightly different from the traditional recipe. It’s spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and a hint of chili powder. Don’t worry, the chili powder is no way strong enough to be spicy. The spices are meant to be subtle, but add so much flavor to the chocolate.

Setting up the bar These days, you can buy adorable paper coffee cups like Starbucks right on Amazon! They come complete with sleeves and lids. Of course, you can also use nice mugs if you’re hosting a party for just a few people. For the hot chocolate bar toppings, use mason jars in different sizes. Use a variety of sizes to really add some height and interest to the whole thing. Use a few tall ones for jumbo marshmallows, a few short ones for toppings like toffee bits, and mini ones for coarse sea salt. Add a little holiday cheer by tying red twine or holiday ribbons to the jars. I will have to admit one of my favorite parts of Christmas is wrapping presents for my puppies. This is a tradition that we started their first Christmas and have continued. Our two dogs are keenly aware of when the presents are being placed under the tree that somewhere there are treats involved. Once the tree is up, Annie and Grace assume the position of waiting patiently. They both have learned to wait to be given their gifts, and are pretty impressive at unwrapping. Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

Consider opening or adding to an IRA. Annual contributions limits are scheduled to increase in the coming years, with additional “catch-up” contributions allowed for those 50 and over. Evaluate to see whether a traditional IRA or Roth IRA makes sense for you.

If you haven’t already done so, you may wish to take some losses in your non-retirement portfolio accounts. The losses can offset profits earned from other investments in your portfolio.

Consider donating cash and property to charity. Gifts to charity are tax-deductible. The date on the check or receipt is usually considered the date of the donation for tax purposes.

Re-balance your portfolio. Uneven price movements in your investments can upset the balance over time. Is your actual asset allocation in line with the desired allocation mix, determined by your risk tolerance profile? Maybe an adjustment is necessary.
