In this season of giving thanks - and football - we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is on spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition, and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride, and appreciating those around us who helped us along on our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. This November issue is dedicated to stories of family, gratefulness and giving back to our community. Our lives are at their richest when we share each other's life; when we reach out to loved ones, or to strangers to lend a hand, or to encourage each other. We are thankful for people like the Williams who reached out around the world and extended a welcoming heart to Josh and Jesse, or for young athletes reaching out to their peers to let them know they can be heard. We are also thankful for you - the residents and businesses in our community - who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. This story began with a chain of fortuitous events - as if it was meant to happen. Catching up with one of our friends we had not seen since before the pandemic, we suddenly realized that we had more in common than we thought. Discussing our plans now that the travel restrictions were lifted, my friend mentioned that he had spent some time in Bolivia as a missionary years before. The same year, one of my uncles had, only a few miles away from each other. This led to a discussion about Bolivia, the time spent there, and the missionary program he was on; the program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - certainly one of its most recognizable characteristics. The program is something that many people around Gilbert are familiar with, either by being part of the Church or by having friends or neighbors who are. Not being members of the Church ourselves, I inquired if someone would be willing to discuss the program and how young men and women of the Church prepared, and the impact it had on their lives. This is how we were introduced to Jamie and Tarik Williams, their sons: Joshua, Jesse, Dallas, and Clayton, as well as their daughters: Olivia, Vienna, and Adelaide. Meeting Joshua and Jesse was an interesting experience. You see, for them, this story began 18 years ago halfway around the

world in Ethiopia. As Jamie puts it, she was reading an article about the humanitarian work being done over there and suddenly had an overwhelming feeling that she needed to do something. After some research, she came across a pilot program that arranged for the international placement of orphans. Nearly two years later, Tarik and her made their way back to Ethiopia to meet Joshua and Jesse for the first time, and as Jamie recalls: “That moment overwhelmed me…it was a long process, but I knew they needed to be part of our family”. For the last 18 years, the two brothers have lived and thrived here, in Gilbert. Sending your child to college is an experience that many parents can relate. However, seeing your child off for a period of 18 months for women and 24 for men sometimes to countries far away with limited communications can be a heart-wrenching experience. As Jesse states: "It used to be more difficult, but with new technologies and the pandemic experience, we are all now more comfortable using remote conferencing tools and long-distance communications." Still, having 4 of your 7 children leave the nest for an extended period of time is a challenge. This is the sacrifice the Williams are making. While Vienna is returning from her mission in Washington, DC; Olivia is currently

Jesse will be heading East to Maryland; Joshua, on the other hand, will be closing the loop and is heading back to Ethiopia for the first time. Missionary work is voluntary. Missionaries fund their own missions — except for their transportation to and from their field of labor — and are not paid for their services. While in the field, missionaries avoid entertainment, parties or other activities common to their age group as long as they are on their missions, they can focus entirely on the work of serving and teaching others. The Church and the Williams family have been kind enough to let us share in the journey and their experience. We hope to tell you more about their journey and give you some updates as they share their lives with the world, and maybe share with us what they are learning along the way.

Teens are reaching out for help in record numbers statewide. Teenage depression and teen suicide are unspoken issues that many families in the East Valley are dealing with on a day-to-day basis. Dr. R Jason Beals, DNP, PMHNP-BC of Redemption Psychiatry in Gilbert explains: “depression comes in many forms and that, often, symptoms in the depressed teen may not always show in the form of classic tearful sadness. Teenage depression often presents as irritability, appetite and weight changes, poor hygiene, tiredness and fatigue, sudden loss of interest in activities, sports, family and friends; lack of motivation (apathy), isolating in their bedroom, drop in grades and school refusal, anger outbursts, displeasure for life and views everything in a negative light (dysphoria), brain fog / poor concentration, indecisiveness, excessive guilt, thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts, self-harm and/or thinking of a plan to attempt suicide. I am always encouraging my child and

teenage patients to talk to someone they trust about their struggles, such as a parent, teacher, therapist, an older sibling, a best friend, a doctor, etc.” This is exactly the mission of Teen Lifeline. The call center is for teens and the calls are answered by teens with a myriad of adult supervision nearby. The Teen Lifeline suicide prevention hotline received more than 22,000 calls and 20,000 text messages from troubled youths throughout Arizona in 2021. That’s a nearly 50% increase compared to 2019. Most of those calls and texts came from Arizona adolescents ages 10-19. “It would be difficult to overstate the importance of peer-topeer connection for teens in every Arizona community,” says Nikki Kontz, Teen Lifeline clinical director. “Our teens are looking for validation. They need to hear from other teens that what they may be feeling is normal, that there is always hope and that help is available 24/7/365.” CONTINUED >

STEPS FOR PARENTS Learn // Educate yourselves on symptoms of mental illness to know what to look for. Seek help // Do not hesitate seeking help for your teen if symptoms are lasting several days or weeks; affecting quality of life; affecting ability to function. Seeking help will most likely prevent a crisis situation. If you suspect a child is in immediate danger of self-inflicted harm or of acting on suicidal thoughts, call 911 or take the child to an emergency room. If immediate safety is not a concern, call Teen Lifeline at (602) 248-8336 (TEEN) or seek a referral to mental health services or counseling. Ask questions // Don’t be afraid to ask your child directly if he or she is having suicidal thoughts. Asking will not plant the idea of suicide in a teenager’s head. Create a safe, loving and non-judgmental relationship with your teen, so they feel comfortable coming to you to talk about their feelings and challenges.

Communicate openly // Talk to your child about the feelings they are experiencing, without passing judgment or acting like the teen is being dramatic. When speaking with your teenager, use nonjudgmental language. An even tone of voice and engaging body language can help the teen to open up. Nathan Shaw, PMHNP shares: “I don’t recommend having the conversation in the “heat of the moment” unless the situation warrants assessing for current danger to one’s self or others. During periods of high stress or frustration, it can be difficult for teenagers to think clearly and can make the topic seem like it should only be brought up when things are not going well.” Validate feelings // Allow the teen to be heard without dismissing what they are saying as merely a fleeting emotion or an overreaction. It can be hard to ask for help or feel heard as a teen, but they deserve to be taken seriously. Create safety // Take safety measures to minimize threats to your child’s safety. Lock up all medications, sharp objects and poisonous chemicals, and secure all firearms, including storing ammunition separately. Monitor phone and electronic use. It is the parent’s responsibility and obligation to set limitations/restrictions and to know what their teen is viewing and exposed to on the web and on social media platforms.

This fall, Teen Lifeline received additional support as area coaches recruited some of the most widely recognized Arizona high school football players by leveraging their visibility on campus and their followings on social media platforms to help save teen lives during Teen Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in September. Nineteen football players and one cheerleader representing 18 Arizona high schools in the Phoenix, Tucson, and Yuma areas starred in a series of professionally-produced video public service announcements (PSAs) organized by Teen Lifeline and the Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club (GCSGC) Released during September, the PSA campaign is designed to provide messages of hope to fellow teens who may be struggling with depression, anxiety, or thoughts of suicide. The messages let teens know they are not alone and encourage them to seek

help if they feel depressed or suicidal. The PSAs were seen throughout the month of September on the players’, teams’, and schools’ social media channels and were broadcast during morning announcements on the high school campuses when possible. In addition to supporting the PSA campaigns at their schools, teams of the participating players recognized Teen Suicide Prevention Awareness Month at select games throughout September, with Teen Lifeline stickers on their football helmets and representatives from Teen Lifeline conducting the pre-kickoff coin toss. Extending this mission throughout the fall was important to many of the east players and parents. Nadia Trigueros, mother of quarterback Noah Trigueros, said it best. “It’s about saving one family’s heart break.”

Giving Back can be a family Affair

Dr. Joy Brauer, a local dentist at Seville Family Dentistry and Joyful Smiles, believes in the importance of helping others and encouraging her family to do the same. Because of this, she and her two daughters, Lexi, 17, and Lily, 14, are members of the National Charity League, Inc., San Tan chapter (NCL). Through this local chapter of a national service organization, Brauer and her daughters give back to the community while bonding with one another. “NCL, Inc., San Tan Chapter is a group of mothers and daughters who have come together in a commitment to community service, leadership development and cultural experiences,” according to the service organization’s website. The focus of the group is to foster the mother-daughter relationship by serving in the community together. Members of the group are mothers and daughters in grades 6-9 (or going into 7th to 10th grades). “Lexi and I joined NCL when Lexi was starting her 8th grade year of school, which was in August 2017,” Brauer says. “I felt it was important to teach Lexi the importance of volunteering and giving back to our community. I think that both of us have enjoyed the time of just being together and helping those in need.” Since joining in 2017, Brauer says that Lexi has completed 282 league and philanthropy hours, she has completed 222 league and philanthropy hours and Lily, who just joined NCL this year, has completed 31 league and philanthropy hours. Brauer shares that some of the local projects they have been involved with include volunteering with the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, AZ IDEA Museum for Youth, ICAN Improving Chandler Area Neighborhoods, Live Love House, The Cinderella Affair, 100 Club of Arizona, Feed My

Starving Children, Walk to End Alzheimer’s, and many more. “Along with volunteering, my daughters are learning leadership skills,” Brauer says. “Lexi is currently the President of her NCL Class of 2023. Over the years, she has learned how to successfully manage a meeting along with other organizational skills. Along with other executive members, she has planned cultural and social events.” In addition to her volunteer work with the NCL, Brauer and her husband, Dr. Howie Brauer, also a dentist, volunteer annually for Arizona Dental Mission of Mercy [AZ MOM]. “At this annual event, free dental care is provided to those that can’t afford to receive dental treatment. It is the largest dental charity event in Arizona and basically anyone that is 18 years of age can volunteer,” Brauer says. “Some of the non-dental positions include being a translator, sterilization technician, patient escort, along with other positions. The event is December 9 and 10 at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum.” “I truly feel blessed to do what I do on a daily basis,” Brauer concludes. “I love my job and I love creating beautiful smiles. Through volunteering with NCL, my daughters are taught the importance of giving back, and they are able to see that there are people outside our little Gilbert and Chandler bubble that need assistance and help. We are fortunate to be able to give back, and I am hoping that I instill the value that we are here to help one another.” The NCL San Tan chapter is recruiting new members through January 15, 2023. • Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. According to Savor & Swirl, wine pairing doesn’t need to be overly complicated for a casual outdoor dinner party. Have a lighter and fuller body style of white and red available with some sparkling thrown in. “Lighter to medium-bodied wines from Rhône Valley, Italy or California would be a good place to start,” they state. “Viognier is one of our favorite wines that goes great with fall-inspired cuisines. Pinot Noir wine goes great with just about any food. Lean towards California or Willamette Valley for a new-world style and go with France for a more earthy, old-world style.
