How can it be that we are already nearing the end of the year? The holidays will be here before we know it, and soon we will be writing out our 2021 resolutions. I am so ready to put 2020 behind us..right? Before everything gets crazy and we start shopping for all of the people on our gift list, we want to take this time to pause and reflect. This year has been a wonderful journey with all of you, and we are grateful that we get to create this magazine every month and connect with you and your family. Thank you for sharing your stories and for reading ours. Thank you for supporting the local businesses in our community, as without them, this magazine wouldn’t be possible. WALKING THE WALK

A JOURNEY DOWN THE WINDING LIFE PATH OF UNASSUMING SPIRITUAL LEADER FRANCIS CHAN

IMAGINE YOURSELF AS THE LEADER OF A THRIVING MEGACHURCH IN VENTURA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, WITH MORE THAN 5,000 MEMBERS AND GROWING. You’re a New York Times bestseller making a million dollars in royalties from your first book and people love you—you’re on top of the world. Would you leave that all behind? Better yet, would you trade all of that, giving away 90% of your income to end up living in the poorest region of Hong Kong surrounded by people struggling to make it by on just 50 cents a day? For most, it probably sounds like a tale of riches to rags; an unfortunate and unwanted result of someone falling upon hard times. But for Francis Chan, a church planter and best-selling author who speaks to thousands of people around the world each year, it’s exactly what he did. And exactly what he needed—an opportunity to walk down a winding path that led him toward fulfilling his purpose; toward becoming a

man who can truly say he lives the life he’s been called to and encouraging others to do the same.

TREND SETTER (CONTINUED)

Watch the full interview @ CityLifestyle.com! Francis, born in San Francisco, was raised in a very traditional Chinese home and navigated a challenging upbringing. His mother died while giving birth to him. His father remarried, then his stepmother died in a car accident when he was 8. His father remarried again, then, when Francis was 12, died of cancer. Twenty-six and newly married, Francis and his wife Lisa founded Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley, California in the early 90s, beginning with a membership of 30 people. Within the first two months, the church grew to 100. By 2000, membership grew even more to 1,600. And by 2008, Cornerstone Community Church was one of the largest in Ventura County and Francis’ then-new book “Crazy Love” was a New York Times bestseller. Then, in 2010, Francis decided to leave it behind in pursuit of a more humble and impactful way of life. The $1 million his bestselling book made in the first year, plus the money it continues to make? Francis signed it all over to a charitable gift fund helping the poor and victims of human trafficking. After making the decision to leave Cornerstone and wrestling with what the next step would be, Francis and Lisa ended up selling their Simi Valley house and moving their family of six at the time overseas to India, Thailand and China, where he was able to embrace new interests and activities by doing what the locals do, and where he also saw an inspiring shift in culture and spiritual values. “I wish we could learn and see the sacrifice of others,” he says. “Their mentality really isn’t a consumer mindset of ‘Here’s my needs, here’s what I feel, no one cares about me— me, me, me, me. Overseas they’re just obsessed with each other and thinking about how to get to the poor—the truly poor—like ‘We’re going to starve today,’ or ‘We’re selling off kids today.’ That type of poor. There’s just a lot more urgency.” In the throes of a pandemic, quarrels over U.S. politics, a growing divide among people and beliefs, and the unsurety of life, Francis’ message of focus and fulfillment can be summed up simply: take your eyes off yourself.

“People that I’ve found that have spent their lives truly loving others are the j o y f u l p e o p l e .” 14

of ingredients including dried lentils, vegetables, rice and a vitamin/protein mixture that is mixed with boiled and sterilized water. The volunteer group packed more than 60,000 meals and gave bagged food to a local elementary school for children living in a slum. “Providing dry food makes it last a long time. We can go into a community that is not receiving food on a daily basis, and provide them meals that last 30, 60 or 90 days,” explains Ceballos. Seeing the fruits of their labor, the volunteers visited House of Hope orphanage founded by SERV International. There, they met “Rebecca,” a young lady who grew up in the orphanage and is now thriving and volunteering there. “What struck me most was that the place was so filled with love,” says Ceballos. “It gives the opportunity for the kids to grow up in an environment where they have everything they need.” The group got to see that there is hope and opportunity for orphans that don’t have the benefit of family, but the support, love and education of orphanage staff. The ISA Foundation has raised close to $50,000 to build a transitional home in Kenya for orphans that are turning 18 and has provided 3.2 million meals with SERV since 2019.

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

“A big takeaway from this trip is a more realistic perspective for all the things we have and being grateful about where I’m from,” says Ceballos. Gilbert residents and husband and wife Michelle and Michael Berrieault are Isagenix independent distributors who also made the momentous trip. “I was so blessed to receive the opportunity to see what life is like on the other side of the world and to experience how hunger and lack of resources shape who we are,” says Michelle Berrieault. Likewise, her husband’s experience was profound. “What I experienced on the trip put things in such a new, amazing and different perspective,” explains Michael Berrieault. “It is of utmost importance to me to unabashedly, unselfishly and unreservedly help others no matter what part of the world they may live in, or how huge the need is.”

Michael Berrieault continues, “God has put it on our hearts to continue to give to those in Africa by supporting the children. I’ve personally developed a couple connections with young career men to whom I give a monthly allowance. I am able to dedicate monies to the ISA Foundation and SERV.” The service trip also significantly influenced Isagenix independent distributor and Gilbert resident Rachel Thomas. “I have found that since I went to Africa, my heart has grown to give back more,” she says. “I have been volunteering at a local food bank every week and doing what I can to help in big and small ways. I may only be one person, but each of us has the ability to do something to cause global change.” Learn more about the ISA Foundation at www.isafoundation.net.

That could be a car seat, dishes or lamps.” Winged Hope is also partnered with The Storehouse in Glendale that will furnish entire apartments for victims. Informative training is also offered through Winged Hope. That includes classes offered at courts, police departments and churches. “We have child sexual abuse prevention training, mandatory reporter training, and training for staff that works with those who have intellectual disabilities,” says Nicely. “We’ve trained their staff and what to look for in terms of sexual abuse.” Winged Hope was also part of Gilbert’s Parent University and provides training at various schools. Adverse Childhood Experiences & Trauma (ACEs) is the type of training that is provided most frequently. ACEs provides a “score” of different types of abuse, neglect, and other adverse childhood experiences that indicates a higher risk for problems later in adult life. “When we talk about adverse childhood experiences and the effect trauma has on adults as they grow, we touch on all of it… Domestic violence child abuse, suicide, addiction, everything.” Nicely was raised in a home where she suffered abuse by her father. Growing up she dreamed of a more positive future for herself and knew that she wanted to help others that were in situations like hers. She positively channeled her experiences, becoming a spokeswoman for Prevent Child Abuse America, and eventually reconciled with her father who has since passed away. Her memoir “All My Friends Are Zeros” recounts Nicely’s story of abuse at the hands of her alcoholic father. The title is a play on the scoring of an ACEs test and how throughout her life, Nicely had surrounded herself with people that led a life that she had hoped to have while she was growing up in an abusive home. Winged Hope is always looking for volunteers. For additional information visit www.wingedhope.org or call 480-757-7030.
