Coming Home in the New Year

Lindsey Hickman | lindsey.hickman@citylifestyle.com

As we welcome a new year, my heart is overflowing with gratitude and excitement. 2026 feels like a season of renewal, growth, and purpose—and stepping into this moment as the new publisher with Gallatin City Lifestyle is truly a dream fulfilled. As a hometown Gallatin girl, this community shaped me, grounded me, and planted seeds that have grown into the work I get to do today. To now return home in this way, serving Gallatin through storytelling, connection, and creativity, is one of the greatest honors of my life. Many of you may also know me from my business J. Alexander Home, or through my work as the owner and publisher of Lebanon City Lifestyle. Bringing Gallatin into our Lifestyle family feels like a natural extension of the love I have for Middle Tennessee, its people, and its deeply rooted sense of community. I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity to serve both cities—each with its own charm, rhythm, and heart. Thank you Nicole for passing me the torch, I am honored to take on this new position and serve Gallatin once again. This January Health & Wellness Issue marks our official beginning together, and what a beautiful issue to start with. A new year invites us to reflect, reset, and step boldly into becoming who we are meant to be. It encourages us to nourish our bodies, our minds, our homes, and our hearts—and to make room for the new blessings God has in store. My team and I are committed to bringing Gallatin inspiring stories, elevated features, thoughtful content, and meaningful connections. We are here to champion local businesses, celebrate the people who make this community extraordinary, and create opportunities for all of us to gather, grow, and support one another. As I’ve prayed over this new chapter, a verse has stayed close to my heart: “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” — Isaiah 43:19 I believe wholeheartedly that God is doing something new here—in our community, in our homes, in our hearts, and now in the pages of Gallatin City Lifestyle. I am so grateful for the opportunity to step into this year with you, to serve you, and to celebrate all the beauty and growth ahead. Cheers to a fresh start, a new season, and a year filled with renewal, joy, and incredible stories waiting to be told. With heartfelt gratitude, JANUARY ALEXANDER, PUBLISHER @ G A L L AT I N L I F E S T Y L E

As your new publisher, this role feels like a homecoming. As a Gallatin girl, I’m honored to take the torch from Nicole and carry forward the beautiful foundation she has built. Since 2023, I have also proudly owned and published Lebanon City Lifestyle, where our passion and consistency created something truly special. That journey has now led to this new chapter—taking the helm of GCL. While Lebanon has been our foundation, Gallatin is my roots— I am humbled to answer God’s calling to serve both of these communities. We’ve grown our team intentionally to ensure each city receives presence, connection, and storytelling – more boots on the ground, more community engagement, and more celebration of the people who make our region thrive. As we expand, our commitment to lifting up the people, places, and stories of both Gallatin and Lebanon only grows stronger. This journey feels divinely aligned as we serve, steward, and celebrate two communities I love so dearly.

Following years in the restaurant industry, I first planted my Tennessee roots in Gallatin—opening a business and advertising it in Gallatin City Lifestyle, never imagining how deeply that connection would shape my future. God eventually led me to Lebanon, where I found myself back to my heart’s original calling, behind a pen and keyboard, telling the stories of the people who give a town its culture, heartbeat, and soul. For the past three years, Lebanon has welcomed me with warmth, allowing me to write about small farms, passionate educators, risk takers, underdogs, and the people who feed us. It gave me purpose and a home. Now, in the most joyful and unexpected full-circle moment, I’m returning to Gallatin—this time as your editor. As we assume Gallatin City Lifestyle alongside Lebanon City Lifestyle, I have the privilege of serving both towns that have been part of my own story. Print media is forever—tangible, lasting, unforgettable. And so is this homecoming.

Alana Cheeves Publisher's Assistant I love the charm and welcoming atmosphere of Lebanon— it’s a big reason I decided to attend Cumberland University. The entrepreneurial spirit thrives here, allowing me to work with countless people who pour so much into making our communities flourish. Managing The Heart of Lebanon Collection subscription box, creating our newsletters and providing project support are just a few of the things I get to do, alongside daily operations. I’m excited to connect with more people in Gallatin, a place I enjoy visiting, especially for time on the water. Guided by Romans 12:9, I try to stay hopeful, cling to what is good, and approach life with love first.

Renee Donnell Editorial Coordinator As part of the Gallatin Lifestyle team for the last two years, having the opportunity to hear from and get to know community members and business owners has been a blessing. Now, being a Lebanon native, I get to see it grow and also be part of the town I was born and raised in. My duties will include creating Business Monthly, City Scene, the local Events Calendar, along with community engagement, writing and more. As we do these new things, I’m reminded of Isaiah 43:19—Jesus Christ makes all things new, he can redeem and restore. He is always working for our good and His glory.

Michelle DePass Market Support Coordinator I’m so grateful to be joining the Lebanon and Gallatin City Lifestyle team. My role will include attending events, assisting with marketing and communications, and supporting our efforts to connect with local businesses. But more than anything, I’m here because I genuinely love people, community, and the stories that shape both. I’m a small-town girl at heart, and Lebanon feels like home. The way this city continues to grow while keeping its warmth and familiarity is something special. Gallatin feels like its sister—rooted, welcoming, full of personality. I’m deeply devoted to my Catholic faith, and it grounds me daily. I pray the rosary, seek peace in simple moments, and trust God with every new step.

The Health of Your Business

Why a “Legal Checkup” is Just as Important as a Physical One

ARTICLE BY LINDSEY HICKMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAT BRADSHAW PHOTOGRAPHY

EXP E RT H E LP | EDUCATION

Just as individuals schedule annual doctor visits to maintain their personal health, business owners should schedule a legal wellness check to keep their companies strong and resilient. The team at Smith Sholar Milliken Matthews PLLC, with offices in Gallatin and Goodlettsville, believes that proactive legal care can prevent future problems and build lasting stability. “Things change—it’s not an if, it’s a when,” Trudy Milliken says, “Businesses have ebbs and flows, upticks and downturns alike.” Revisiting your company’s legal health yearly ensures that as your business evolves, your protections evolve with it. This includes reviewing insurance coverage, updating partner agreements, and confirming that your entity structure still serves your goals. “It’s much easier to tidy things up in real time than to recreate a timeline when facing a lawsuit or liability claim,” Preston Matthews adds.

SPOTTING BLIND SPOTS BEFORE THEY COST YOU

One of the most common legal pitfalls they see? Business owners who try to do everything alone. “You can be an incredible hustler and still not have top-notch business skills—or you can be a great strategist but struggle with execution,” they explain. “The real skill is in recognizing where you’re lacking and seeking help in that area.” For small or growing businesses, this means building the right team—attorneys, accountants, payroll professionals, insurance agents, and trusted vendors. These partnerships form the backbone of a healthy organization. “Having the right people in position is key,” they emphasize. “You don’t have to know everything, but you do need to know who to call.”

can make or break a company,” Milliken stresses, “Those seemingly simple steps are foundational.” Beyond paperwork, they encourage leaders to regularly evaluate their financial structure and contracts, “Are your balance sheets and P&L current? Are your agreements protecting your interests? These are questions that keep businesses healthy long-term,” they note.

REDUCE STRESS BY STAYING LEGALLY ORGANIZED

Legal compliance isn’t just about avoiding penalties—it’s about peace of mind. “When you have systems in place—software, calendaring, consistent communication—you eliminate the chaos,” they explain, “No one can remember everything. But when deadlines, renewals, and obligations are tracked and managed, you can lead confidently.” This philosophy mirrors personal wellness: consistent habits create resilience. In business, that means building processes for accountability, ongoing education, and proactive review. “Constantly learning, reading, and staying compliant—it’s how we stay sharp as attorneys, and it’s how businesses stay protected,” Milliken says.

THE POWER OF REVIEWING YOUR LEGAL BASICS

Even established companies can overlook the fundamentals. Every year, business owners should review their Annual Reports, confirm their 941s are current, and ensure that payroll, tax, and mileage compliance are in order. “Getting back to the basics

WHERE BUSINESS LAW MEETS REAL ESTATE

Smith Sholar Milliken Matthews PLLC also bridges business and real estate law—a powerful combination for entrepreneurs who invest in property. “Many clients use real estate as an income stream,” Matthews explains, “We help them create liability shelters—Trusts, LLCs, Corporations— and transfer their holdings to protect both assets and anonymity.” By viewing entities as vehicles for tax advantages and protection, the firm helps clients design structures that support long-term goals.

KEEPING YOUR BUSINESS IN PEAK CONDITION

Running a company requires endurance, adaptability, and the right guidance. “Congratulations—you made it through another year in business,” Matthews says, “You’re obviously doing a lot right. Let’s make sure next year is even stronger.” Smith Sholar Milliken Matthews PLLC offers comprehensive business and real estate legal services with offices in Gallatin and Goodlettsville, and closing locations in Bowling Green, Franklin, and Metro Center Nashville.

THREE THINGS TO DO BEFORE 2026

To start the new year on solid legal ground, the firm suggests this checklist: 1 Review Your Structure and Strategy. Schedule a meeting with your legal team to discuss your 2026 plans. Are you expanding, downsizing, or adding new partners? Ensure your legal framework supports your goals. 2. Evaluate Lessons from 2025. What challenges arose this year—internal or external? Use those lessons to strengthen contracts, partnerships, and policies. 3. Prevent Repeat Mistakes. If a lease, vendor agreement, or partnership didn’t go as planned, refine it now. Mistakes in business will happen, the goal is to make sure they aren’t frequent visitors.

SMILE BIG, SHINE Bright

PRACTICAL TIPS FROM LOCAL HUSBAND-AND-WIFE TEAM REDEFINING KID'S DENTAL CARE. ARTICLE BY LINDSEY HICKMAN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY SHINE PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY & ORTHODONTICS

22

K I D S COR N E R | LO CAL SE RVICE S

When Dr. Lauren Carlson and Dr. Mike Seelig opened Shine Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics in Gallatin, they didn’t set out to create a typical clinic. Their dream was something personal: a place that felt like family, where parents could breathe easier, and children could learn to love their smiles. What began as the shared vision of two dental school classmates—now husband and wife—has grown into one of the most unique and trusted specialty practices in Sumner County. THE PERFECT PAIRING: WHY PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY AND ORTHODONTICS BELONG TOGETHER Many families assume orthodontics comes years after pediatric dental care. At Shine, those services were intentionally merged from day one. “Pediatric dentists are often the first clinicians to notice the early signs of orthodontic concerns,” says Dr. Lauren, a pediatric dentist trained specifically to treat children from infancy through adolescence. “When I see growing patients, I’m uniquely positioned to spot when intervention may be beneficial—and I know exactly when it’s best to refer.” Working daily alongside Dr. Mike, her orthodontist husband, adds another layer of insight that most pediatric dentists never have access to. And that relationship works both ways. “Most orthodontists don’t get prolonged experience within a pediatric environment,” Dr. Mike explains, “Because I work with Dr. Lauren and her patients every day, I’m deeply attuned to how children think, feel, and respond to treatment. It makes a tremendous difference.” The result? One roof, one team, and fewer appointments across town. Families save time away from work and school, and—when they want to—parents can even receive orthodontic treatment alongside their children.

DIGITAL DENTISTRY: COMFORT, SPEED, AND ZERO MESS If you still picture kids holding trays of impression goop and waiting nervously for X-rays, Shine will surprise you. The practice is fully digital, from intake to treatment planning. Their iTero intraoral scanner captures a complete digital model of a patient’s mouth in under five minutes—no mess, no discomfort, no fuss. Combined with 100% digital X-rays, the technology allows Dr. Lauren and Dr. Mike to diagnose conditions faster and with greater precision. Custom appliances for both orthodontic and pediatric patients are created straight from these scans, reducing repeat visits. For busy families, these efficiencies are invaluable. “Every additional appointment is time a parent must take off work and a child must miss school,” says Dr. Lauren, “We built Shine to respect your schedule as much as your smile.”

Orthodontics and pediatric dentistry under one roof means healthier smiles, fewer appointments, and a truly family-centered approach to care.

TREATING SMILES FROM BABY TEETH TO ADULTHOOD Shine’s approach is comprehensive and age-inclusive: Pediatric patients: from birth through age 18 Orthodontic patients: children, teens, and adults. That dual model means kids grow with the same trusted team, while parents can start or continue their own treatment without ever leaving the office. REDEFINING THE DENTAL EXPERIENCE FOR CHILDREN Fear at the dentist often stems from unfamiliarity. Shine’s team works to eliminate that from the very first visit. As specialists, both Dr. Lauren and Dr. Mike trained in child psychological development—how children think, how they process fear, and how to earn trust. “We take time to explain what’s happening before anything begins,” says Dr. Lauren, “There should never be mystery at a dental visit.”

We built Shine out of love for our own family. When you walk through our doors, you’re part of that family too. Every child deserves a stress-free, confidence-building dental experience that sets them up for lifelong wellness. Every staff member speaks gently, works at the child’s pace, and celebrates each milestone. The environment is designed for children—bright, playful, and never intimidating. ORAL HEALTH IS WHOLE-BODY HEALTH “We tell families that the mouth is the gateway to the rest of the body,” says Dr. Mike, And the science backs it up. Poor oral health fuels inflammation, which affects everything from cardiovascular health to childhood growth and sleep. Gum disease is linked to systemic illness. Tooth infections—even those in baby teeth—can become life-threatening if untreated. Dental pain impacts mental health, school performance, and behavior. And orthodontics is just as much about health as it is about aesthetics. Crowding, bite issues, or airway limitations can influence speech, development, and confidence. Shine even identifies signs of systemic concerns like sleep apnea. The clues often appear in a child’s breathing pattern, jaw position, or dental wear patterns. Early referrals can be life changing. A PRACTICE BUILT FROM LOVE AND FAMILY Shine isn’t a corporate chain. It’s privately owned—100% by Dr. Lauren and Dr. Mike. “Family dental practices are becoming rare in Sumner County,” says Dr. Mike, “We’re proud to be one of the few remaining.” After nearly 18 months in business, the Shine Family—patients and staff alike— continues to grow. Many families have been with them since day one. Their team members from the early days remain the heartbeat of the practice. The compliment they hear most often? “We’ve never been to a dental office like this before.” That’s exactly the point. “We built Shine out of love for our own family,” says Dr. Lauren. “When you walk through our doors, you’re part of that family too.”

A NEW YEAR, A NEW SMILE: PRACTICAL TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDS’ DENTAL & ORTHO HABITS

• First visit early: Schedule by age 1 or six months after the first tooth. • Brush together: Two minutes, twice a day—kids follow your lead. • Limit sugar liquids: Juice, gummies, and sports drinks quietly fuel cavities. • Ask about ortho early: A screening around age 7 can prevent bigger interventions. • Watch sleep: Snoring, mouth breathing, or restless nights may signal airway issues. • Focus on encouragement: Dental confidence grows from positive experiences. HEALTHY HABITS in Gallatin Gallatin’s wellness scene is thriving, thanks to experts who practice what they preach—moving with intention, fueling with smart nutrition, and championing restorative habits that support mind and body. From protein shakes to neighborhood walks, these leaders model routines that fit real life. Emily Runyan of TN Mental Wellness echoes this balance, reminding clients that “your nervous system needs brief reset moments throughout the day,” reinforcing the link between movement and clarity. For many, wellness begins outdoors. Dr. Garrett Paulson of Connected Kids Chiropractic and his wife love hiking Bledsoe Creek State Park and playing pickleball. Carla of Waxing the City enjoys the Station Camp Greenway with her husband and dogs. Others, like Jessie and Gina of Vita Aesthetics, choose F45 for structured strength and cardio,

while Ikaria Infusions & Aesthetics swears by Dive Barre Pilates Studio. Runyan adds paddleboarding and paddleboard yoga to her routine—movement that supports both physical wellness and emotional grounding. Dr. Groff and Cari Lambrecht of Highpoint Health also stay active through community events, including charity runs like Gallatin’s popular Shamrock Run each March. Nutrition plays a major role. Protein shakes, overnight oats loaded with protein, seeds, nuts, and fruit, prepped lunches, and whole-food meals fuel busy days, while simple options like cottage cheese with blueberries or ground turkey salads keep energy steady. Our wellness leaders agree: staying hydrated supports skin, energy, and overall well-being, paired with mindful habits, build resilience.

DR. MARK GROFF, DISC CENTERS OF AMERICA I love to prepare our proteins ahead and then add them to the greens or vegetables throughout the week for lunch and suppers. Lunchtime is our favorite time of day to make our own cold pressed juices.

CARLA VIBBERT, WAXING THE CITY GALLATIN Hydration is essential for skin and overall well-being. Drinking water can even influence hair regrowth and helps curb unnecessary hunger throughout the day

DR. GARRETT PAULSON, CONNECTED KIDS CHIROPRACTIC A protein shake is my morning go-to. Recently, RYSE mint chocolate chip protein has been my favorite.

VITA AESTHETICS, JESSIE AND GINA I love to prep ground turkey with taco seasoning for the week. I pair it with black beans and salsa, over a salad, and my kids love it for quick quesadillas when they are hungry after school.

EMILY RUNYAN, LMFT, TN MENTAL WELLNESS Connection is a core part of mental health. Reaching out to a trusted friend, partner, or therapist can quickly shift how supported and grounded you feel. Wellness extends beyond food and exercise. Recovery practices, restorative IV hydration, and NAD+ support reduce inflammation and maintain endurance, while regular chiropractic or aesthetic care provides preventive benefits. Small habits—like sunscreen, multitasking products, and desk-friendly skincare— show that intentional wellness can seamlessly fit into daily life. Gallatin’s health leaders prove that living well isn’t a trend; it’s a lifestyle you can begin anytime. Follow @GallatinLifestyle for full Q&A interviews with our trusted wellness partners throughout the month.

THE WELL WOMAN COLLECTIVE “Jesus called, I answered,” says publisher January Alexander-Coffin, whose journey of healing and restoration inspired The Well Woman Collective. After years of intentionally learning to refill her own cup, January began incorporating those same practices into Lebanon City Lifestyle’s women’s retreats for the past three years—witnessing transformation that affirmed an even greater calling. “I knew we had to amplify our process, to help serve as many women as we could,” she says. Surrounded daily by strong women who uplift, encourage, and inspire one another in our community, she envisioned an event designed to nourish, heal, and strengthen women in every season. The Well Woman Collective is her way of giving back—creating sacred space for women to slow down, feel loved, and step forward with renewed might. On January 27th, that vision comes to life at the historic Capitol Theatre in Lebanon, where an extraordinary lineup of speakers and practitioners will guide attendees through a full day of wisdom, wellness, and wholehearted connection. Drake White remembers the moment everything went silent. After taking the stage, about three songs in, he noticed his body was not feeling normal. “The cotton candy sky became the ground and the grass became the sky. I was like, man, I’m having a stroke.” When White suffered a hemorrhagic stroke in 2019 due to a ruptured arteriovenous malformation (AVM)—a tangle of arteries and veins in his brain—he had to relearn everything—walking, talking, even the simplest tasks. That experience inspired him to dedicate his life to helping others navigate the challenges he faced, both physically and emotionally. Panic could have swallowed him whole. Instead, he fixed his mind on breath. On presence. On the name he repeated like

THE DRAKE WHITE STORY

a lifeline: Yahweh, Yahweh. “As long as I could breathe, I just made that sound,” he recalls, “I saw angels, anchors of peace. I knew I was protected.” His wife Alex was seven hours away in Nashville. The call came and she drove through the night, reaching his bedside just as he woke. Her hand slipped into his left—only he couldn’t move it. Couldn’t move his leg. Couldn’t recognize the body he suddenly felt trapped inside. “That was one of the lowest lows,” he says, “Realizing I’m not going to Australia. I’m not touring with Zac Brown. I can’t even move.” Depression didn’t creep in; it crashed. The future blurred into a long, uncertain road no doctor could promise he’d ever fully walk. But somewhere inside that darkness, White made a vow. A quiet deal with God.

“If you let me hold my wife’s left hand again with my left hand,” he prayed, “and give me the ability to have kids, to keep going—I’ll make this about other people. I’ll show them the light that you are. I’ll show them how I got through this.” Six years later—with walls dented from thrown phones, with hard-fought victories hard-won, with days he admits were filled with both despairing thoughts and others blazing with gratitude—he’s kept that promise. White’s recovery wasn’t just physical. It was a mental marathon. A spiritual wrestling match. A test of identity, marriage, endurance, and faith. And through it, he learned that the real battlefield is often invisible: the struggle happening inside the mind. Out of that realization came Benefit for the Brain, which White describes as a night dedicated to the battle between our ears, a CONTINUED >

nonprofit built to support not only survivors of neurological trauma but the caregivers who often shoulder more than anyone sees. Caregivers like Alex. The mission goes beyond raising funds; it’s about providing education, advocacy, and community for people dealing with traumatic brain injuries, mental health struggles, and the complex healthcare systems surrounding them. White emphasizes practical tools for survivors and caregivers alike—how to manage treatment, navigate insurance hurdles, and find hope amid uncertainty. Through gatherings, retreats, music-driven healing work, and mental wellness programs, Benefit for the Brain creates space for that care. White calls it spiritual physiotherapy—tending to the mind with the same seriousness we give the body. The mission echoes through his newer music, his documentary The Hunts the Healing, and the raw honesty he

shares onstage. His story—once defined by a single terrifying moment—is now a testament to what happens when vulnerability meets purpose. “I just want people to know I get it,” he says, “It’s hard. I’ve been there. I know the mental battle. And I want them to know there’s hope.” In Drake White’s world, healing isn’t a finish line. It’s a rhythm, a practice, and a shared climb. And the people walking beside the wounded—the caregivers—deserve just as much light on their path. For more information visit benefitforthebrain.com, DrakeWhite.com and follow @drakewhitestomp. Healing Through Music Finding Peace and Purpose with Karla Davis

Soulful singer-songwriter Karla Davis has found her voice on some of the nation’s most iconic stages, from NBC’s The Voice to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The Grand Ole Opry, and the Ryman Auditorium. Known for her “country blue-eyed soul” sound, Karla draws inspiration from legends like Roberta Flack, James Taylor, and Bonnie Raitt. Her recently released cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Dancing in the Dark is available on all platforms, reflecting both her versatility and deep emotional connection to music. For Davis, music is far more than performance—it’s ministry, therapy, and a path to healing. “Music can reach you in a way that words never can,” she shares, “I remember hearing In the Garden at my granny’s little Baptist church when I was five, and I remember it like it was yesterday. Music is incredibly powerful.” Over the years, she has come to see her calling from God as central to her artistry. “It’s only recently that God put it on my heart to reimagine some of my favorite gospel songs and share them with people. That has changed my career.”

Through her performances, Davis seeks to create experiences that uplift and inspire. She blends storytelling, spirituality, and song to reach audiences on a deep level. “I hope they will feel inspired… to hold onto hope and lean into Jesus,” she says. “I’m convinced that I’ve been given new life after doing the same! If it weren’t for music, I’m not sure where I would be today.” Davis also emphasizes the profound connection between music and mental health. Creating and sharing music has been her personal therapy, a tool to process emotions, and a way to navigate life’s challenges. “When I’m sad, I write. When I’m overjoyed, I write. When I’m scared, I pray and write,” she says, “Sometimes these magical moments come from putting pen to paper and trying to create something. I don’t know where I would be without music and what it has done for me in my life.”

While her career has taken her to Nashville and beyond, Davis remains drawn to Middle Tennessee, where she has found community, inspiration, and a sense of home. “The souls of this town are beautiful,” she says, “From the first day I arrived, I was met by the most incredible people who helped me move into my very first apartment. There was a sense of community from day one, and that felt so special.” Looking ahead, Davis is excited to expand her ministry through music with a new gospel record featuring some of her favorite hymns. She also treasures being part of initiatives like the Well Woman Collective, where music, wellness, and women’s empowerment intersect. “I’m proud to be a small part of a group of women uplifting others,” she says. For Davis, music is more than a career—it’s a vehicle for healing, hope, and connection. Through her soulful voice, heartfelt lyrics, and unwavering faith, she reminds listeners that peace, joy, and purpose are not only possible but within reach, one song at a time. Karla Davis will be preforming at The Well Women Collective event in Lebanon on January 27. Refer to page 28 for more information.
