Our Love Letter To Gallatin For some, Valentine’s Day may seem a bit more commercialized than the true meaning of love. Love is a deep affection for someone or a great interest in something. While we celebrate this annually in February, it is also a good reminder to us that love and affection for those we cherish should be both daily and year-round. This month’s issue is dedicated to Local Love: local businesses, those in our community and loving what is near and dear to us. We’ve always believed that we can accomplish more together. With our family, friends, partners and community, we accomplish so much more than simply trying to succeed on our own. Having someone in our corner, be it a loved one or even a stranger, rooting us on and cheering for our success, is such an amazing example of how this local love in Gallatin has taken root. We continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories these pages tell month after month and the kind words delivered to us of appreciation for being able to do our small part of storytelling about the people, places and stories of our beloved city. Our love for Gallatin is deep. The friendships, partnerships and support systems made are cherished. Thank you for letting us be a part of the life you’re building, whatever that may look like, and for inviting us to come alongside of you. Our hope is that we inspire you to grow your love personally and locally just a bit more than you ever imagined and to continue to reflect on and pass down that same compassion to others, wherever life may lead. Once when our children found out that we canceled our Valentine’s Day dinner reservation, we were immediately instructed to meet in the dining room in our “fanciest” attire. We found a beautifully-decorated table, lit candles and a special dinner as a family!

In 2018, we set up a picnic in our home. We ate a catered meal, had dessert and talked for hours about our dreams for the future. That night we decided to start our business together as well and it’s been an amazing ride with my best friend!

We were married at 19 (Mary) and 21 (Jeff). On Valentine’s Day in 1980, that was the day I asked Mary to marry me. Although I never quite got the words out before she started crying, she said yes!

In 2018, Scott told me to randomly pack a bag and he quietly drove us to the airport; we hopped in a small four-seater plane and he flew us to Asheville for a Biltmore Valentine’s getaway. I’ve been his co-pilot ever since that day!

Our very first Valentine’s Day, we had only been together for a few months but Chris pulled out all the stops to make it special. That night, I knew he was the one and that restaurant we were at ended up being where he proposed to me eight months later!

It’s inevitable that we age. When we think about what we pass down to our children or what we leave behind for our families, one thing we don’t focus on enough is how to support ourselves once we no longer have the financial or physical means to do so. According to data, we’re living longer now and because of this, we need to be more proactive in how we approach what short-term or long-term care means to us and our families. Frank and Laurie Woods know what a struggle this can be for families as they too have their own stories of caring for older parents and navigating the options of senior care. Because of this, they came into real estate with a tender heart for seniors. They knew they could combine their two passions

together and help people through two complex processes that require extensive time and research. With that idea, Tiger Lily Real Estate was born. With passion rooted in providing buyers and sellers opportunities to improve their lives by helping them navigate out of difficult housing situations with understanding and integrity, while at the same time helping them into other options for each respective season of life (something that is forgotten many times), has truly become their calling. As a husband and wife investor team, they have modeled their business to be a help to seniors who have decided to downsize and transition into more stable, long-term care options. Instead of going through a daunting real estate process, many times involving repairs, decluttering and burdensome labors of love clearing out decades of items, Tiger Lily simplifies and diminishes the worries by navigating a family or individual through this process. Frank and Laurie’s heart for seniors extends beyond housing. Laurie volunteers at senior homes with her portable sewing machine and enjoys the contagious laughs and generational stories. Through all the friends she has made in the senior community and seeing those in senior living facilities who may not have had other options for long-term care, this only furthers her desire to help those aging in our community who look for local living solutions. Frank and Laurie are also members of the Senior Services Network, Geriatric Counsel of Sumner County and Real Estate Investors of Nashville (where Laurie serves on the board). They have published a book titled, Paying For Long-Term Care - The Essential Guide to Understanding and Funding Senior Care. They also partner with the Paying for Long-Term Care initiative to provide families with resources to empower them in their decisions and help navigate their loved one’s transition to long-term care. You won’t find an investor group that is more knowledgeable or specialized in this specialty demographic. Although senior living transitions is their specialty, they continue to provide other opportunities and services outside of senior transition. With their ability to buy homes as-is, they seek homes with great potential and pair that with a local family who is also seeking a home in our area and is able to custom-remodel it to their needs. Tiger Lily Real Estate not only invests in homes but also in our community where they continue building the trust and relationships of seniors and families and continue to pour back into them. Gallatin's Safe Place for Animals Local nonprofit in focus ARTICLE BY SCOTT BELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICOLE BELL Safe Place for Animals in Gallatin was founded over 14 years ago after a group of local women took notice of the volume of abandoned, neglected and abused animals in Sumner County that did not have a safe haven. Pooling their money together to rent a small warehouse, they began taking in abandoned cats and dogs. They soon outgrew the initial shelter and more space was needed. The current location of SPA was purchased and still serves the public in Gallatin while still reflecting the compassion and commitment to our local animals on which it was founded. SPA provides comfort and compassion to local animals in need. Every animal that comes through the doors is evaluated for potential local adopters in an effort to help these animals find homes. Each application is also screened through veterinary records and personal references to ensure that new adopters will be responsible pet owners. Every animal is well-vetted prior to being available for adoption to ensure that they are healthy, spayed/neutered and microchipped. SPA’s goal remains the same: to keep as many animals as possible off the streets and out of shelters. SPA has rescued animals from homes under horrific circumstances and secured others that were left behind when owners moved out. SPA aims to educate the public about responsible pet ownership and works with other area shelters to ensure that animals are given the best care possible under each individual circumstance. SPA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and relies on the generosity of the community to operate. Keeping local animals well by providing food, toys, medical procedures/medications, beds, cleaning supplies, and treats until they find their forever homes is the true passion of SPA. On any given day SPA houses and cares for approximately 70+ cats and dogs and has placed over 9,000 animals into their forever homes!

Follow our five tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love. A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

USE R EAL ESTATE W ISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.
