As the season of gratitude approaches, I find myself reflecting on the abundance of blessings that surround us. In the spirit of thankfulness and giving, we want to take a moment to express our deep appreciation for the warmth and generosity that enriches our lives. First and foremost, I’m grateful for the support and love of my husband, family and friends. Their unwavering presence and encouragement form the foundation of my happiness. It’s the shared moments, laughter and shared challenges that make life truly meaningful. This time of year also reminds me of the importance of giving back to our community. The joy derived from lending a helping hand, whether through acts of kindness, charitable donations or volunteer work is unparalleled. Each contribution, no matter how small, has the power to make a positive impact on someone’s life. In the spirit of this Thanksgiving and thankful season, we are inspired to embrace the opportunities to give and share with those in need. This could be through participating in local initiatives, supporting charitable organizations or simply extending a helping hand to a neighbor. Gallatin’s own Annie Sandelovich’s triumph in securing the prestigious title of Miss America’s United States 2023 rings with community pride. Her journey, a testament to dedication and grace, embodies the spirit of our area. Each step to wearing the crown also carries the hopes and dreams of those who cheered her on and encouraged her along the way. Beyond personal success, Annie’s achievement has become a beacon of inspiration in our community and beyond - an embodiment of resilience and the incredible potential within our local talent. Annie Sandelovich recently took a seat with Gallatin Lifestyle to chronicle her pageant journeys and to express her gratitude during this season of thankfulness.

GL: TELL US ABOUT GROWING UP IN GALLATIN! AS: I was born and raised in Gallatin and until college it had been the only home I had ever known. Almost every childhood memory I have took place in Gallatin, from attending Square Fest every year with my dad to Sumner County’s annual family fitness festivals, to watching

every holiday parade in the Food Lion parking lot, never missing a year when attending the Sumner County Fair and the yearly Bubble Bash courtesy of the Gallatin Fire Department each Fourth of July. Gallatin provided me with the most magical childhood experiences!

GL: HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN THE PAGEANT WORLD? AS: When I was in elementary school I played softball, was less of a girly-girl, never wore shoes and hated wearing dresses! Once I was in middle school that changed a little. In 7th grade, I competed in my first pageant at the Sumner County Fair. I remember thinking the fair pageant was the equivalent to Miss America in our little town. I spent hours practicing in the living room, looking at magazines filled with dresses and oohing and awing when Roxanna would change the dresses in the window of her store. I would make my dad drive really slow every day on our way home just to take a look at the dresses in the [Roxanna’s Closet] window. I am very thankful for the Sumner County Fair Pageant because I probably wouldn’t be here without it!

GL: IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU ENGAGE WITH THE COMMUNITY WHILE PARTICIPATING IN COMPETITIONS? AS: I am always looking for a way to support business owners in the community so I am always taking inquiries and requests to make appearances at events, galas, ribbon cuttings, charity events and more! So far since winning the title I have traveled to Atlanta to support stroke victims at the Shepherd Center, held free dance classes for children in Winston-Salem, I have traveled to Philadelphia to tour the Constitution Center and to see the Liberty Bell and in October I was able to emcee the Miss Nashville Volunteer Scholarship Pageant that was held at my sweet alma mater of Gallatin High School! Throughout my time in pageantry, I have raised over $5,000 for the National Association for Children of Addiction, started a counseling program for children, advocated for red ribbon and drug-free curriculum to be taught in all schools in East Tennessee and held blanket drives to support the department of Child Protective Services for Children who are removed from unsafe environments.

GL: WHICH INDIVIDUALS IN YOUR LIFE SERVE AS ROLE MODELS AND FOR WHOM ARE YOU MOST GRATEFUL? AS: The list of people in this community is endless. I had a lot of really amazing educators in my life who continued to mentor me long after I was their student. My neighbor and childhood best friend, Abby Wynn, has always played a huge role in my life and taught me to be the sunshine. My older brother Andrew is my biggest cheerleader and mentored me so much as we’ve gotten older. My dad, who works at the Gallatin Rock Quarry, has always called me his little rock and reminded me I am tough enough to survive anything life throws at me. My mom could make anyone feel like they were safe, loved, valued and that they could move mountains. This is the most important trait I hope I gained from her. But my Aunt Gina and Uncle Ben taught me the most important life lessons of all: my circumstances growing up do not define who I get to become as an adult, education is my ticket out, this too shall pass and that I am in control of my future! I would not be me without these people, this city or the lessons it has taught me!

FEED SUMNER FOOD BANK IN GALLATIN REACHES HUNDREDS OF LOCAL FAMILIES EACH MONTH

The importance of local food banks extends beyond the provision of sustenance; it symbolizes a community’s commitment to caring for its own. In a region where economic challenges persist, these food banks become beacons of hope, providing not just nourishment but also a sense of dignity and support. In Sumner County, the presence and dedication of food banks underscores the collective effort to build a stronger, more compassionate community where no one goes hungry. Located in Gallatin, Feed Sumner Food Bank and Ministry lives up to its name as both a food bank and a ministry. With the escalating cost of living in 2022, the realization of impending gaps in meeting food needs in Sumner County prompted First Baptist Church in Hendersonville to take action--and thus Feed Sumner was born. The organization operates on three foundational principles: food, connection and Jesus. As a food bank, the focus is on initiating conversations around nourishment, acting as a starting point for sharing the good news of Jesus.

The emphasis on connection reflects the commitment to following Jesus’ example of intentional relationship building, fostering community, fellowship and service. Feed Sumner thrives on the generosity of local volunteerism and is led by a dedicated team. Feed Sumner is a beacon of support, extending its reach to over 500 local families each month through a variety of initiatives. Monthly and mobile distributions, open shopping opportunities and at-home deliveries for elderly and handicapped individuals are just a few ways they ensure that families in Sumner County have access to essential food resources. In an effort to enhance accessibility, Feed Sumner is currently in the process of constructing an on-site pantry, allowing families to shop for food during regular business hours. Feed Sumner takes pride in leading the local collaborative effort. By forming partnerships and building relationships with various organizations, Feed Sumner guides individuals toward the right resources for needs beyond food, such as mental health services, utility bill assistance, housing support and various other forms of benevolence. What distinguishes Feed Sumner from other organizations is their ministry, which serves as the driving force behind their mission. Beyond the tangible assistance, Feed Sumner extends an invitation to the community for more profound connections. Whether someone is in need of prayer, seeking a church or simply looking for someone to talk to, Feed Sumner is dedicated to fostering a supportive community where individuals can find the connections they need. Contrary to common misconceptions about age, socio-economic status and abilities, Feed Sumner warmly welcomes individuals from all walks of life to join their mission. Regardless of who you are, there are several ways you can actively participate and contribute to the cause.

First, you can lend your support through the power of prayer. By praying for the organization, individuals hope to see Feed Sumner effectively navigate within its capacity and optimize food opportunities for recipients. The goal is to intertwine the Gospel of Jesus with every box of food, fostering both physical and spiritual nourishment. Next, for those who are eager to engage more directly, volunteering is a fantastic option! Feed Sumner encourages individuals of all ages and abilities to lend their time and skills. Additionally, monetary donations are welcomed, providing flexibility in supporting the organization’s ongoing efforts to combat food insecurity in the community. For these medical professionals at Sumner Regional Medical Center, they count their blessings to be working alongside some of the best medical staff and individuals who give Sumner County residents top-notch care, whether it’s a holiday weekend or an average weekday. Zachariah “Zac” Ramsey, M.D., has been the Assistant Medical Director of Sumner Regional Emergency Department for the past 3 years and will

soon be stepping into the Medical Director position in January 2024. Dr. Ramsey completed his undergraduate studies at Vanderbilt University and later attended the University of Tennessee for medical school. He then underwent four years of training in Emergency Medicine residency in Chicago before returning to Middle Tennessee to serve our local area. He emphasizes the wonderful team environment in the emergency department where nurses, technicians, secretaries, radiology staff, registration personnel and others work together harmoniously to assist patients during their most critical moments. “When we work together to resuscitate and save a patient's life, there’s nothing else I’d rather do and nowhere else I’d rather work,” says Dr. Ramsey. When it comes to Thanksgiving traditions, Dr. Ramsey enjoys spending quality time with his family and indulging in desserts, particularly his wife's pumpkin cheesecake. In cases when he has to work on Thanksgiving Day, he expresses gratitude for understanding family members who are kind enough to wait or celebrate a day later. He also appreciates delicious food dropped off at the emergency department that can be enjoyed with the team while working. His list of things to be thankful for is short but sweet. He is especially grateful for his amazing wife and two daughters. Richard "Kramp" Krampotich, RN, Paramedic and Hazardous Materials Technician, also works at Sumner Regional Medical Center and has been a part of Sumner Regional for nearly 22 years. Having traveled around the world as a child with a parent in the Air Force, Kramp developed his passion for helping others while in Spain. "I worked as a lifeguard and EMT with the Spanish Red Cross. After moving to Florida, I became a Beach Lifeguard, EMT, Paramedic and then a Critical Care Paramedic. I later relocated to Tennessee where I pursued my nursing degree while working as a Paramedic," he reflects. Kramp’s diverse background in healthcare across different regions of the world has

shaped him into an exceptional healthcare provider. Additionally, he is fluent in Spanish and conversational in French. Kramp’s Thanksgiving in his household is one of the few occasions when they bring out the fine China dinnerware and everyone dresses up for dinner. They offer a heartfelt prayer, expressing gratitude and wishes of well-being to those defending our country. Kramp, dedicated to healthcare, often works holidays with family joining him at the hospital. If on duty, they prepare turkey and stuffing, Kramp handles the pumpkin pie and colleagues contribute side dishes creating a makeshift holiday feast during work breaks. What is Kramp thankful for this season? He is thankful to have a loving and healthy family, a job with wonderful co-workers that offers favorable working conditions near his home and one that supports his family. Moreover, he expresses gratitude toward the courageous men and women in uniform who make significant sacrifices. Both men have expressed immense gratitude toward their team at Sumner Regional Medical Center for the camaraderie shown and the unwavering mission of HighPoint Health System as they strive to provide exceptional care to the people of our area. During the holiday season, local thankfulness and humble gratitude are what make our community thrive. Jennifer Peyton, owner of the brand new Crown & Iris Boutique in Gallatin, shares her own gratitude and thankfulness for the opportunity to contribute and help lift up the community she serves. Crown & Iris first opened its doors in May 2023, but Jennifer has spent years dreaming up ideas for this family lifestyle boutique and carefully curating it to be the community’s one-stop shop for family clothing and gifting needs. She envisions the store as a one-of-a -kind destination where individuals can find outfits and apparel for themselves or the whole family, along with home items, teacher/hostess gifts and even bridal accessories. There is truly something for everyone and every occasion. The location for the store itself, Newmans Crossing in Gallatin, was carefully chosen a year before construction even began on the development based on its proximity to the surrounding school districts, as Jennifer knew that a family-based & family-run store would be best surrounded by those families that the boutique serves. While big box stores continue to pop up, the local shopping experience is still alive and well and so many times preferred! Since the doors opened six months ago, Jennifer has been thrilled by the overwhelming support and community growth. Building genuine connections with numerous people and sharing in countless special family moments brings her immense joy. Repeatedly restocking and expanding, C&I now boasts additional brands and items. Jennifer, fueled by gratitude for the community, takes pleasure in

reciprocating the generosity shown to her in this latest venture. Supporting local schools is a top priority as well as supporting the Miss Nashville Volunteer Program, which holds a very special place in her heart. The program is a scholarship organization that promotes scholarships, education, responsibility, volunteerism and empowerment. Jennifer also cherishes United Way of Sumner County, often organizing drives to support it. The “Crowned Affair” VIP Shopping Experience earlier in July at Crown & Iris specifically aimed to benefit this beloved group. Although Jennifer harbored no financial expectations, her goal was clear: to raise as much money as possible for our local United Way who is making a significant impact in our community. The proceeds from Crown & Iris were then matched dollar-for-dollar by their sister business, Fitness 1440 in Gallatin, and the total was donated to United Way of Sumner County. She hopes to be able to double that donation total for the next “Crowned Affair” event held in January. As the holiday season is upon us, C&I is packed with items, apparel, experiences and programs. Unveiling some exciting surprises, their meticulously planned holiday experience guarantees to be an amazing asset for the community. Their inaugural Holiday Open House, from November 3rd to 5th, brings discounts, giveaways, bounce houses and family fun. The holiday spirit continues at the Gallatin Chamber’s Tinsel and Treasures event from November 10th to 12th. Crown & Iris will also participate at the Christmas Tree Village event at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds in Nashville on the same weekend. Walking into my granny’s house, even in my late 30s, seeing that little round wooden table pushed in the corner takes me back to my childhood and reminds me of so many Thanksgiving meals. That little round, wooden table was where my uncles, my sister and I spent every Thanksgiving: the kids table. We long dreamt of graduating from that table, but now that we have, oh how I miss the fun we had back then. Getting to play and joke around in our own space was so much fun and now I love watching my girls and their cousins do the same. To some, a kids table doesn’t seem necessary. “Let everyone sit together,” they say; but, to me that kids table allowed for some great bonding, memories and fun. You don’t have to have fancy decorations to make your kids table fun. A few pumpkins, some activity place mats or even butcher paper will satisfy the little ones in your family. Use rinsed out food cans or jars for crayon and marker holders. You can find great activity place mats or tablecloths at local craft stores or even Amazon and Target. Don’t want to spend money on an activity place mat? You can make your own. Get some easel or butcher paper and draw activities on it. You could make a crossword puzzle with Thanksgiving words, a tic tac toe board with pumpkins or acorns as your play pieces. You could use painter's tape to make various sized lines to measure with household items, or use Thanksgiving stickers to create a matching

game where kids will match already placed stickers on the table. Want to practice letter and number recognition? Use dot stickers with letters and numbers written on them to match with ones written on the paper. Kids would even love to just use the paper for free drawing space. Place a pumpkin in the middle of the table for kids to write what they are thankful for! Complete a scavenger hunt with adult relatives while waiting for food to finish up. Want a sensory activity? Gather a plate for each child and place brown and orange play dough in the center and then provide “accessories” on the table or each plate to allow them to create their own turkey or pumpkin. This could be items such as pipe cleaners, googly eyes, sequins, craft pom poms, or even leaves, sticks and acorns from outside. Have some older kids at your table? Make your own Left-Right-Center game. Grab some blank dice at the Dollar Tree or craft store and on the sides write L, R, C and a dot. Then grab some acorns, small pumpkins or even candy corn to use as the game pieces. This will be a game adults will probably even want to join in on. For some shape practice, cut out a variety of shapes and use them to make turkeys with paper plates. It’s Pumpkin Bread Season

The Perfect Recipe For Some Autumn Comfort

Ingredients: • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon nutmeg • 1/2 teaspoon ginger • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 1/2 cups canned pumpkin • 1 1/2 cups sugar • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/2 cup vegetable oil or canola oil • 1/2 cup melted butter • 2 eggs Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. 2. In a mixing bowl, add the flour, baking soda and baking powder, spices, and salt. Set aside. 3. Combine the oil, butter, and vanilla in a liquid measuring cup. 4. In a mixing bowl (with a paddle attachment), beat the pumpkin, sugar, and eggs until combined. 5. Turn the mixer to low and slowly add the liquid ingredients. Let this process take about 1 to 2 minutes so the mixture becomes light and fluffy. 6. Using a spatula, fold the dry ingredients into the wet and slowly fold until the ingredients are blended. 7. Prepare a 10 x 5 loaf pan by buttering it really well and then adding a strip of parchment paper to the bottom and up the sides for easy removal. 8. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 1 hour. The bread will be fully risen in the center, like a loaf. Make sure it’s fully cooked and brown on the top otherwise it will fall in the middle once removed from the oven.

CHOCOLATE and WINE The Key to a Successful Wine and

Chocolate Pairing Lies in Finding the Right Combination of Flavors and Characteristics.

Pairing wine and chocolate together can be a delightful sensory experience that can elevate the flavors of both. While the concept of pairing wine with food is well-known, pairing it with chocolate may seem unconventional at first. However, when done correctly, it can create a harmonious balance where the flavors of the wine and chocolate complement and enhance one another. Wine and chocolate have a lot of similarities to each other. Both contain flavanols (antioxidants) and polyphenols (compounds found in plant-based food) that are good for you and have anti-inflammatory properties. These characteristics affect flavor so it’s somewhat challenging to pair wine and chocolate together. The more polyphenols, the more pronounced the bitter taste. For example, if you sip a delicious dry red wine alongside a hunk of dark chocolate, the wine will start to taste bitter and sour. The taste imbalance is coming from the heightened levels of flavanols (different types of tannin) found in both chocolate and wine that end up clashing against each other on your tongue. While it might sound counterintuitive, a good rule of thumb is to pair a wine that is “sweeter” than the chocolate itself. “Sweet” doesn’t refer to dessert wines alone. In the wine world, the term “sweet” is often used to denote ripe, fruit-forward flavors in a wine. These characteristics provide a nice balance to the bitter flavors of cocoa. Both wine and chocolate can have intense, dry flavors. In order to find the right balance, it’s best to choose wines that are a little bit softer and juicier than the chocolate you’re pairing it with. We’ve done the footwork to find several wines that partner well with chocolate. Here are our guidelines for matching chocolate with wine and a few of our favorite wine and chocolate pairings. We hope you’ll try them and then get inspired to experiment and create your own.

CREATING THE PERFECT PAIR DA R K CHOCOLATE TIP 1: M ATCH SUGA R WITH SUGAR When it comes to pairing chocolate and wine, you don’t want to strike a balance, you want to match sugar to sugar. Sweeter chocolate like white chocolate does better when consumed with sweeter wines and bitter chocolate like dark chocolate enjoys being paired with dryer wines. Think of it as matching sugar with sugar. A good rule of thumb is to always pair wines that are equally or slightly more sweet than the chocolate being eaten with it.

TIP 2: M ATCH INTENSIT Y WITH INTENSITY If you pair an incredibly delicately flavored dark chocolate with a full-bodied, heavy red, the intensity of the wine will destroy any of the subtlety that might have been present in the chocolate. The opposite is also true: strong-tasting chocolate will blow a delicate wine out of the water. Keep this rule of thumb in mind: light-flavored chocolates enjoy being paired with light-bodied wines and intensely flavored chocolates prefer being paired with full-bodied wines.

If the chocolate contains other ingredients such as nuts, fruit, or caramel, consider how these flavors will play with the wine. This is especially helpful to remember when enjoying truffles with wine.
